Chapter 7
I look down at the paperwork. I really don't want to do this. I look down at Rand feeling completely helpless, "What am I going to do Rand?" I mutter. I stuff my head into my hands and rub against it roughly in hopes to rub off all the stress I am feeling.
I sigh as I pull my hands away and rest my head in one of them as it's propped up on the desk. I hear a whimper and I look down to see Rand resting his head on my thigh. He looked up at me with his pretty eyes and I could feel a slight relief in the stress.
I run my hand over his head, threading my fingers threw his fur as I do so. I didn't know how the hell I was going to pull this off but I knew I had to do it for him. I looked threw the paper one more time before finally deciding to put it off for another time.
"How about we go for a walk?" I asked looking down at Rand. He sat up straight and let out a bark. I grinned taking that as a yes before leading him out the flat, down the stairs, and then out the building. I pull up the fur lined hood of my large jacket.
It was getting cold in Gotham and that means the Holidays should be coming along soon too. I walked along the streets of Gotham all the way into the shopping part of Gotham. I scanned the shops and rolled my eyes as they already had Christmas Décor out.
Christmas was only a month away. I really don't see a point in this. It was late afternoon so people are just getting off work and out to meet after work.
I strolled down the street until I stopped a local pet store. I looked down at Rand and shrugged before opening the door and letting Rand in before I walked in after. The store was cozy and didn't hold much animals for sale.
They held a small pin in the front that held one small puppy. It seems like she was the last of the litter that was up for sale. I looked into the Pin to see the little thing. It shouldn't take long for her to get adopted.
I walk deeper into the store to see an older dog locked up in a kennel. When I get a closer look my eyes widen at the sight of the poor thing. Scars littered his face and a chunk of his ear was missing. The dog snarled at me trying to scare me.
I he was all beaten up and I could tell this wasn't just from a dog fight. "Quite the warrior aren't you?" I whisper as I held my hand out for him to sniff it. "I wouldn't if I were you," A voice called. I glared at the owner of the voice, the man who stood at the counter looked at me slightly scared.
"And why is that?" I ask coldly as I gently stroked the snout of the dog threw his cage. The man looked at me shocked and stuttered over his words. "In one sentence please," I spat. "Well-um- he usually isn't all that friendly and anyone who does try and take him home doesn't make it out the door with him." He explained.
I hum in acknowledging the information. I opened the kennel and let the dog out. The dog stepped out of the cage and the worker panicked "Relax will you!" I snapped before going back to watch the dog. The old dog walked out hesitantly and made his way over to the puppy pin.
I smirk in realization as the dog nudged open the pen and slipped inside. "Quite the papa wolf aren't you?" I whisper to him as he snuggled up with the small puppy. "I'll take them both off your hands," I say not sparing the shopkeeper a glance.
"But-but-um" He stuttered. "Did I stutter?" I snarled whipping my head to face the man. He shook his head franticly as Rand snarled at the worker "I didn't think so," I muse looking back at the two dogs. I walked over to the counter to fill out the adoption papers.
I've sighed so many of these I have the entire form memorized. I sighed quickly and handed it back wordlessly. The man review the paper quickly but froze as he glanced from the paper to me. I looked at him rather annoyed as he gapped like a fish completely wordless.
"Anubis," He whispered in awe. I rolled my eyes as I whistle for the two larger dogs and picked up the smaller one. We made our way out the door and into the cold November air. I stuffed the tiny puppy into my jacket with her little head peaking out of the top just below my chin.
Rand lead the other large dog ahead of me as we continued down the street. It was getting darker than it already was and the streets got slightly thinner. I curse when I felt a hand wrap around my arm and pull me into an alleyway.
I was shoved deeper into the alley way by your typical mugger. "alright little miss. I don't want to do anything to you and your cute little puppy so just do as I say and-" He never got to finish as a blur shoved him away from me and onto the alleyway floor.
I snapped my fingers to make Rand back off but when I did I herd his growl from behind me right along with the newly rescued dog. I snap my head back over to the fight and my eyes widen as I see small patches of green, yellow, and black.
"You gotta be kidding?" I whisper. The fight went on only for a few more seconds until the hero stood up from knocking out the mugger. He walked over to me slowly but Rand growled deeply. It didn't take long for the rescue to take a hint and growl as well. Hell even the puppy who is still tucked away in my jacket growled at the hero.
I sigh and whistle off the dogs but I have to slightly bump the puppy in my jacket to get her to quite down. "Robin," I greet thankfully. The green masked boy nodded at me before glancing at the dogs around us.
I saw his gloved fingers twitch slightly and I smirked. It was a small tell tale sigh that someone wants to pet the dogs. "Do you like dogs?" I ask softly. He looked back up at me and back down at the dogs. He nodded silently and I grinned "Well this is Rand. My partner for life." I grin as I nodded over to Rand.
Rand stood tall and presented himself to the boy wonder. Robin held his hand out slowly for Rand to smell before he actually pet Rand. I smile slightly at the small interaction, not many people these days have enough courtesy towards dogs like that.
Robin then turned to the new rescue and held out his hand. "And who is this?" He asked "Doesn't have a name yet just picked him up today at a pet store turns out he won't let anyone take him without taking his little princess with them," I laugh out.
"So I just took them both," I shrug. Robin made his way over to me and got really close to pet the small puppy that's tucked away inside my jacket. "That's impressive I don't know a lot of people who would adopt another dog right along with another." He mused.
I felt my face heat up as I felt his gloved knuckles brush against my neck every time he stroked the puppy. "Yes well I tend to take in dogs by the van load so this just a light rescue for me." I laugh lightly . I bit back a small moan as his entire finger brushed against my neck.
"By the van load? You wouldn't happen to be this famous Anubis would you?" He asked as his finger once again brushed against my neck. "Yes that would be me, now if you please my neck is rather sensitive and you running you finger over it really isn't helping my thought process," I snap.
Robin moved his hand away from my neck and I could finally breath evenly. "I apologize," He mutters and threw the dim lighting I can see a faint pink color stain his cheeks. He cleared his throat and did his best to stand taller "Well until we met again Anubis," He finalized.
"You know?" I call out before he could disappear. He turned to look at me and bit my lip out of a bit of shyness "I'm sure you being Batman's sidekick you should be able to find out where I live so if you ever feel up for a tour around my dog domain don't be afraid to stop by," I mutter shyly.
I saw him nod slightly before his disappeared into the darkness. I was knocked out of my fuzzy haze by Rand who used his body to nudge me. I look down to see him giving me his judgey look. "oh don't give me that look!" I snap before walking home before anyone else can snatch me off the street.
