Prolong: the Danger

It was late night, but warm for a spring night. Little 11 year old Ashley was walking home with her 6 year old brother. They were just hanging out with some friends at the park, but now it was late.

They were on their way, when they stood in silence walking by the house that was across from theirs. A cast iron fence surrounded the house all around. The house looked old and ancient. It use to be abandoned until a lonely old man moved into it a month ago. No one went near the house. They said the old man was mean and even scary. There was even something else living in the house with him.

Ashley stood by the iron fence looking at the dark quiet house. David Jr stood by her and looked at the house. Then the little boy had an idea, "let's check inside," he whispered his plan.

"Are you crazy?" Ashley asked as her little brother squeezed himself through the bars of the black fence. Ashley frowned at him. "Jr!" She whispered harshly at him.

Ashley sighed and squeezed herself through the bars as well. They weren't allowed in this area of the neighborhood because of the old man here. He didn't like visitors. She quietly followed her little brother as he walked around the house to find a window to peek in.

Soon they came to the back porch. The back door was even opened just a crack and Junior walked inside.

"Jr! No!" Ashley whispered, harshly. She quietly followed him and saw the inside of the house. Everything was so antique like. So formal. Fancy, but too clean. Almost like the old man was hiding something.

Junior came to a door that looked like it lead in the basement. He opened it and walked slowly down. For Ashley, she walked into a living room. Usually there would be family photos around in some people's homes. Here the old man didn't have atleast one photo up.

Suddenly she heard a blood curling scream from the basement. She ran downstairs finding a strange dark figure crouch down biting something. She was in shock swish it was her brother. Junior was trying to fight off the creature.

"SIS! Get help!!! HELP!!!"

Ashley panicked and ran upstairs. The ran out the front door and squeezed through the bars. Once free, she ran to her house across the street. She didn't noticed the car pulling up the driveway to the creepy house. Once inside she screamed causing her parents to stop what they were doing.

"MOM! DAD! Jr needs help! HELP!!!" Ashley screamed.

Mr Miller and his wife ran to their daughter who in the kitchen shaking and crying.

"Where's Jr?" Mr Miller asked.

"Across the street. In the old Carter house." She cried as her mother held her.

"You kids aren't suppose to be in there!" Mr Miller yelled.

"Dad, please just called the police. I'm sorry. But Jr is being attacked by something!!!" Ashley screamed.

Mr Miller picked up the phone dialing the police number.

Several minutes they arrived. Mr Carter was sitting by the staircase outside with his head down as the police talked with him. Mrs Millers broke in tears seeing her little boy almost completely deformed by whatever attacked him. The little boy was unconscious and barley fighting as the ambulance placed him in the ambulance vehicle. Ashley teared up fearing this was her fault. That's when one of the officers came to her and Mr Miller while Mrs Miller ride in the ambulance with her son.

"I just want to tell you...you're not in trouble here, Ashley," Officer Davis told her.

"...but I tried to tell him no." Ashley said.

"I understand that, but it's not your fault. Don't take it so hard."

Ashley then looked up at Mr Carter. "What about...Mr Carter?"

Evelyn turned to the old man. He was now being handcuffed.

"He will be taken down to the station to be questioned more." Officer Davis said, "but he claims he was out."

"He was. I mean, we didn't see his car anywhere,"Ashley said.

Evelyn nodded, "Right now I think you both should head over to the hospital."

Mr Miller sighed taking Ashly's arm gently and walked her to his pickup truck. While on their way, Ashley couldn't hold in her tears any longer. She then broke down. Mr Miller turned to her and held her hand. He tried his best to comfort his daughter. He too was worried for Junior, but for how bad he looked, he feared his son wouldn't make it. Half his face was gone, his hand completely was ripped off, and even one of his ears was missing. Half of his face was showing his skull. But somehow his son was fighting. For a 6 year old that wasn't normal, but hopefully there would be a chance.

Once to the hospital, Mr Miller and Ashley came in, but Ashley felt something in the air that something wasn't right. She and her father came in the family waiting room that her mother was in. She was still crying. Ashley stood away from her fearing she would probably be mad at her for this...and she was right.

"How could you do this? It was your responsibility to watch him!"

"Mom, I—"

"No excuses!!!"

"Alice!" Mr Miller yelled, he went to Ashley and held her close, "She tried. Alright? The boy was just curious. They are just kids."

"Just kids? That's your excuse to everything, David! Every time Ashley does something wrong, you side with her!"

That wasn't true. The wrong things she did were small things, like accidentally doing somethings wrong. If she did something wrong like hurting someone or purposely hurt something, he would discipline her. Her mother was just taking punishments too seriously. Not with Junior though. She adored Junior and even if he did something wrong, the excuse from her mom would be, "he's just a baby," or something.

Here, Ashley knew she was definitely at fault. She was responsible for her little brother. She wished she was more harsher to tell him no.

"Alice, that is not true, and you know that!" Mr Miller said angrily.

"She's obviously your favorite."

"I love both of the kids equally!" Mr Miller snapped, "You're the one who favorites over our son!"

Mrs Miller frowned at him. It was always like this. Them constantly bickering and fighting each other. When was it ever the last time the Miller parents ever said I love you to each other besides to the kids. They were definitely not the same since their honeymoon. They tried to make it work, but ever since Ashley came to the picture, her mother changed. She didn't understand why her mother was more harsher towards her, maybe she was jealous of her. She couldn't even remember the last time her mother said to her I love you to her own daughter. To Junior she heard it every day.

"If Junior...," she then glared at Ashley, "I will never forgive you."

Mr Miller frowned at his wife.

"I...hate you," Mrs Miller growled at Ashley.

Mr Miller gently pushed Ashley outside the room and shut the door. Ashley listened against the door.

"Don't you ever say those words to her! What kind of a mother are you!?" Mr Miller yelled at the top of his lungs.

"I'm definitely not her mother!"

"You know what, you're right! You're not! Because no mother should f***ing NEVER SAY THAT TO HER CHILD!"

"IF MY SON DOESN'T MAKE IT IM LEAVING YOU! I see how it is, David! Your with her!" Mrs Miller yelled.

"I don't really care what you think, Alice. You haven't been a mother to Ashley. You only cared for our son."

"MY SON!" She yelled.

"He was OUR son!"

"GO TO H***!!!" Alice yelled to her husband and stormed out.

Ashley moved away from the door before she came out. She watched her mother stormed down the hallway. She then felt a hand on her shoulder and seen it was her father. She dropped her head crying. He then comforted her by pulling dr into a hug and didn't let her go. Ashley gripped on him tightly and broke down.

"Don't think that this is your fault, Pixie," Pixie was a nickname he gave her since she was born, "Your mom and I have been fighting before you and Junior were born...and don't think this is your fault either. I know you feel guilty and yes it was your responsibility to watch over your brother, but you tried..."

"No I didn't. I was too scared to save him. He told me to get help, but I was too afraid to save him myself. I'm his big sister and I didn't save him. I didn't save him!" Ashley cried.

Mr Miller rubbed her back as he held her trying to comfort her. "It's alright, Pixie. It's alright. Please don't cry. He will be alright..."
