Chapter 94: The COVID Series
Day 5 of strike. The infected cruise ship 'World Dream' now has 41 confirmed nCoV cases.
Our strike group decided as a whole to return to work early. Our department was barely functioning and our seniors were struggling.
Since Carrie Lam, our chief executive, announced the countdown to the mandatory quarantine, people flocked in droves from mainland. Day 1 of announcing the mandatory quarantine (i.e. 3 days before its implement), we had over 19,000 people entering from mainland. Day 2, we had over 38,000. Day 3, the final day, had over 58,000 people.
An 8-year-old mainlander boy was admitted to a mainland hospital with pneumonia and required intubation (a tube put down his throat to help him breathe because his lungs were so bad). Upon hearing the mandatory HK quarantine coming, the parents discharged him against medical advice (including forcing medics to remove the endotracheal tube helping him breathe), rushed him over the border to HK, and now he is admitted to one of our hospitals once again intubated and now in isolation. This belongs on reddit under r/insaneparents. They could have killed the boy. They could still kill the boy. We aren't sure if the boy is nCoV positive, but his lungs look awful.
Remember how I was sceptical how our government could implement a mandatory 14 day quarantine period in 72 hours for every person that comes from mainland into HK?
An email surfaced from the Department of Health sent to medical students, bypassing their university's faculty staff, inviting them to volunteer (emphasis on volunteer) to do the phone calls to those under quarantine to:
- Check they are still in quarantine and
- Give out medical advice.
Give out medical advice! Medical students! Who bears the blame if they give out wrong advice or assessed wrongly over the phone (which is something most doctors wouldn't even do because it's super risky!)?? Also -- for free! That means they have no contract. That means they have no insurance if something goes wrong!
Also -- what kind of BS 'mandatory quarantine' is that?! I could say I'm on Mars. Who would check?
