I gave myself a sharps injury today. Luckily the needle hadn't been used yet or that's a trip to A+E and then occupational health at 8:30pm when I still have a ton of jobs to do. (Been there and done that as a 5th year medical student. Still living with the scars of constantly worrying for the whole 3 months if I'd caught HIV -- I hadn't, btw.)

Basically, I took out a clean cannula with the aim of cannulating a patient. I took off its lid with too much enthusiasm and ended up spearing it into my thumb.

Nonchalantly talking to the patient, I disposed of the needle and got a fresh one (and changed my gloves), inserted the cannula, taped it, flushed it, and then I felt blood oozing out of the hole in my finger. So I took off the glove to bin it along with the rest of my used stuff.

It went well. I think.
