"Oh no," Jay muttered, and I stared at the sight before me. "Anywhere but here."
"Well, well, if it isn't little Jay-Jay."
Jay stared up at the sky, groaning aloud, "Anyone but him."
I glanced between the two boys before me.
After going through the Portal Ursula made for us, we ended up in a place I didn't recognize, but Jay did. And he didn't like it one bit. It was a place called 'Wonderland'. Jay and I were on our own once we arrived, having left Hook and his Crew back on the ship that couldn't go any farther than this Land apparently, saying it wasn't his turf and that the Queen of Hearts will have his head if he trespasses. I didn't know who this 'Queen of Hearts' was, but I already didn't like the sound of her. And we were currently passing through what looked like a meadow of sorts with talking flowers, having already argued with a talking doorknob in order to enter Wonderland. The Disneyverse just keeps getting weirder and weirder the more time I spend here.
After a while of wandering together for who knows how long, we came across--surprisingly--another human being. At least I had thought so. We were passing under some giant mushrooms when a voice spoke from above us. I lifted my head only to find no one there. I frowned. "Joker," I heard Jay growl under his breath, and looked over my shoulder at the sound of an invisible laugh.
"What's going on?" I asked, subconsciously reaching up to grip Jay's serpent choker around my neck as a reassurance.
"Who's your pretty little friend, Jay-Jay?"
I snapped my head up in time to see a floating grin appear above my head. I blinked rapidly. Was this for real? The grin soon grew into a face with dark eyes and a lean nose, and then the body of a boy appeared following his facial features. I stared. He was gorgeous. The boy was a bit taller than Jay, but not by much, and he had dark shaggy hair. Blue-black cat ears peeked out from on top of his head, and he wore a bright red long coat covered in black spades and hearts with white clubs and diamonds. Under that was a dark black muscle tee, and dark wash jeans tucked in black-and-red combat boots that had buckles in the shape of red-and-black checkered hearts.
"What brings you to my mother's Kingdom, Jay-Jay?" The boy disappeared and reappeared on top of the mushroom head above us, a sly grin forming on his lips, and it was then I noticed a long elegant blue-and-black striped tail waving idly behind him. I blinked. Was he part cat or something?
Jay huffed and crossed his arms. "We need to use the Looking Glass to take Emily back to the Human world." I snapped my head up at that. Wasn't I going to stay with him?
The boy tsked and shook his head. "No can do, Jay-Jay. Mother is in a raging mood today, and if I were you, I wouldn't go near her Castle if I wanted to keep my head." The boy's body disappeared then as just his head floated in mid-air, the sly grin still on his lips. "Of course, I can lose my head whenever I want."
I fell backwards in shock at the boy's floating head, trying very hard to restrain a scream that was crawling up my throat. What was this guy? Jay rolled his eyes and helped me stand up shakily on my feet. "Emily, this is Joker, the son of the Queen of Hearts."
"Half-son," Joker emphasized, his body once again reappearing to stay with his head, "my father is really Cheshire Cat, but the Queen of Hearts kidnapped me when I was a kitten and raised me as her own." Joker shrugged. "Cheshire never came looking for me, so I assumed he didn't care either way."
"That's awful," I voiced.
Joker chuckled darkly. "Welcome to Wonderland, sweetheart," he winked down at me, causing me to blush and Jay tugged me behind him.
"Then can you help me get her home, Joker?" Jay asked him, and Joker seemed to think for a moment. Then his eyes grew a livid green with cat slits as he disappeared and reappeared behind me, causing me to jump in surprise.
"It doesn't seem your girl wants to leave the Disneyverse, Jay-Jay," Joker chuckled and reappeared back on top of the mushroom.
Jay frowned and turned to look back at me. "Is that true?"
I lowered my gaze. "Is it that obvious?" I directed the question up at Joker, who shrugged and crossed his legs while leaning back on the mushroom.
"I just happen to be very perceptive of things, my dear," he chuckled once again before he disappeared and was now standing only a few yards away from us, holding up something in his hand for us to see, but he was too far away. "Does you wanting to stay have anything to do with this?" he asked, and reappeared over our heads as he let go of the object in his hands. It floated down and twirled over and over in the air as Jay snatched it mid-fall.
"What is this?" Jay mumbled, and turned the object over in his hands. It was then I noticed it was a photo. I subtly reached into my boot and didn't feel the photograph there anymore. I gulped and slowly took a step back. Jay looked up at me with a frown. "What is this? Where did you get it?" Jay repeated while lifting the photo in question.
I fiddled with my thumbs while sending a small glare up at Joker, who chuckled and wiggled his fingers at me in response. I sighed and dropped my hands. "Peter Pan gave it to me."
Jay frowned. "I thought you said you-"
"I lied," I shook my head, "he told me something I didn't want to believe, but this was proof that it was true." I pointed at the photo in his hand. "Those people in the picture are Peter Pan and Iza, his once lover. And the child in their arms?" I swallowed, about to say it out loud for the first time, "That child is me."
"Wait, Iza?" both Joker and Jay voiced at the same time, and exchanged a frightened look with one another. I frowned.
"What is it? Do you know something about my mother, Jay? Joker?" I looked between both boys and studied them hard. I gasped. "You know where she is, don't you?" I whispered in realization, and took a step forward. "Take me to her," I demanded, and Joker was in front of me in an instant, his eyes a livid cat green.
"Are you crazy?" he hissed. "She'll kill us if we so much as cross into her domain!"
"Easy, Joker," Jay pulled Joker back by the shoulder, but he shook him off. Sighing, Jay turned to me. "Are you saying that Iza and Peter Pan are your biological parents?" I nodded. "Oh, boy," he mumbled, and took off his beanie to run a hand through his dark chocolate brown hair. "This is bad."
"What is?" I glared over at Jay. "You're not telling me anything again, Jay. What's wrong with taking me to see my mother?"
"If I told you, you wouldn't like it," he responded, and I narrowed my eyes.
"Try me," I crossed my arms and Jay looked away.
"There's a War going on right now between Good and Evil-," Jay began, and Joker laughed darkly, interrupting him.
I raised an eyebrow. "And what does that have to do with me?"
"It involves you, Little Miss Evil-Do-Gooder," Joker was the one who answered me, a dark grin on his face as his eyes shone bright cat green, "because your mother is the one waging the War currently happening in the Disneyverse."
I stiffened, my heart beating rapidly in my chest at his words, my eyes narrowing in on him. "You're lying," I whispered, not wanting to believe what he said was true, even though I knew deep down he was right.
Joker hissed and disappeared before reappearing back on top of the mushroom cap once again. "Welcome to our world, sweetheart. And I can't necessarily lie, since, you know, Wonderland is all about riddles and such."
I stomped my foot angrily. I knew it was childish, but I was actually starting to hate it here in the Disneyverse despite wanting to find my mother. "That's just the thing about this place!" I shouted in frustration, Jay and Joker both staring at me silently. "Nothing in this world makes sense! You don't make sense with being part cat," I directed a finger up at Joker who twitched his tail in response, "I still don't know who your father is," I directed my words at Jay who looked down shamefully, "and I certainly don't know anything about Disney itself except for all the Tinkerbell and Peter Pan movies I watched as a kid!" There. I was done venting. I was breathing heavily through my mouth when I turned my back on them and walked off further into the field of giant mushrooms.
"Emily, stop! You don't know what's up there!" Jay called from behind me.
"I don't care! It's gotta be better than being here with the two of you!" I called back, still stomping my way across the field of abnormal-sized fungus when the ground suddenly gave way beneath me. I screamed as I went rolling down a steep hill, my Pirate outfit tearing in several places and gathering up dirt in my wake.
"Emily!" I faintly heard Jay call out my name, but he already seemed too far away, my body still tumbling down the hill when I suddenly stopped, my arms draped around something warm as whatever caught me pulled me closer against them. I slowly blinked my eyes open, having closed them during my fall, and was now looking at my surroundings as the ground seemed to grow distant the higher I went.
I squeaked in fear and gripped tighter onto the warmth holding me as I looked up to meet those bright green cat eyes from earlier. "You sure you ain't falling for me, Little Miss Evil-Do-Gooder?" Joker gibed, and I glared harshly at him.
"Stop calling me that," I hissed under my breath, and glanced down at the distance between us and the ground, "and put me down."
"If you insist," Joker smirked and released his arms out from under me, causing me to plummet to my death with a scream. Cruel to be Kind, indeed.
"Joker!" I distantly heard Jay reprimand as I descended towards the ground, throwing my arms in front of my face as a source of protection when I was suddenly immersed in a vertical tunnel that was filled with several floating objects of all kinds. I was actually surprised I wasn't dead by this point. But speaking of dead, Joker was going to be once I was through with him.
I continued screaming as I free-fell down the tunnel until I plummeted out the end, rolling to a stop a few feet away from a-a table? I groaned and pushed myself up to my hands and knees, looking up at the massive table leg next to me. Where was I? And why was everything so huge? "Jay?" I groaned while getting to my feet. "Joker?"
"Alice?"
I snapped my head up to see a giant white mouse peering down over the edge of the table followed by a deranged looking haggard rabbit, and a grinning man with flaming wild hair. I stared up at the massive beings above me.
Then I screamed.
