The Different Dwarven Leader- The Hobbit Fanfic
ok, so this is going to be interesting.
I am replacing Thorin with a girl like many people have done with Bilbo.
Theresa
basically a female version of Thorin.
Dark brown hair, icy blue eyes, etc.
Intro
Theresa Oakenshield has always dealt with the stereotypes about women, even from her own friends.
After the battle of Moria, there was a huge debate over who should rule the dwarves of Erebor.
"I will." she volunteered.
"You're a woman. A woman has no place in a man's job." one person protested.
"Oh really? Then why was the position of queen created?"
There was silence. When Theresa set her mind to something, you would not win the argument.
"We'll take an hour's break to consider it." another said.
Theresa immediately went back to her tent, not knowing she was being followed.
"Theresa why? Just let us find someone else to be king, and you can live peacefully."
"You know I can't do that Dwalin. My grandfather died to try to give our people a new home after the dragon. I don't care if I'm a woman. I can do this, particularly if I have you and your brother to advise me."
"A-a woman's place... i-is in the kitchen... Not on the throne." the dwarf said uncertainly.
"Oh come on Dwalin. I know that's not what you really believe, or at least not when it comes to me." Theresa said softly, taking his hands in her own.
He sighed; he hated it when she did this to him because he couldn't help but take her side.
Their eyes met, and he saw the plea in her gaze. He couldn't help but agree.
"Fine, but what are your arguments about why it should be you?"
"Why can't a woman rule the people from the start? I mean, we've had times where the king has died and it was just the queen left. Those were our best times, most everyone agrees on that much."
"That's a valid point. Also what you said about the position of queen. I will stand by you through this, alright?"
"I knew you would, thank you Dwalin." she said, hugging her old friend tightly.
As Dwalin went back to his own tent, he heard people making fun of the eldest princess of Erebor.
"What have I gotten myself into?" he muttered to himself.
He got to his tent, and his brother was waiting.
"So what do you think about this?" Balin asked.
"She would be a great queen."
"You don't sound too sure."
"She would, she's just a little irrational!"
"She can manipulate you too easily my brother."
"I have not been manipulated, I just believe in my friend..."
"Dwalin, just admit it. You're smitten."
Soon, the hour was up. The council was back in business.
"You are a woman!"
"And? What is the point of having princesses if they never get to rule their kingdom without a man beside them?! Also, there have been many times when a king died and his queen ruled on. Those were our best times! I even have people supporting me! Right?" Theresa demanded of the assembled dwarves.
Dwalin, Balin, Bifur, Bofur, Bombur, Oin, Gloin, and a few other raised their hands in support of their queen.
The others were stubborn.
"Fine, I will come to an agreement. I will become queen only.... only after an arranged marrige to a noble from the Iron Hills." Theresa sighed. She didn't want to do this, but she had to.
"All in favor?" one dwarf asked.
All but one of the dwarves raised their hands.
"Since there is only one protest, as long as you go through with the wedding, you shall become queen."
She looked around to see who protested, and she met Dwalin's gaze.
His look was one of hurt and maybe a little betrayal, and her look said that they would talk later.
As soon as she left, she headed for a private spot of the woods nearby, knowing Dwalin would follow.
"I don't like this idea. At all. You shouldn't have to marry against your will." he said, taking her hand.
"It's the only way for me to become queen, Dwalin. It's alright. I have a good friend who is a noble there that will be willing to help me get the throne. It's easy. I marry him, then we divorce after I have the throne. It's not like I would be marrying some stuck up noble who only cares about the throne."
"I still don't-"
"I know Dwalin. But trust me. I know what I'm doing. I promise."
"Alright." he sighed, hugging her tightly. "I just don't want you hurt."
That was before the dwarves of Erebor settled in the Blue Mountains.
Currently, Dwalin was on his way to the Shire, to the house of the hobbit that would be the burglar on their quest.
He was not paying attention to where he was going, but was instead thinking about his queen.
She had set off for a meeting in the Iron Hills to see if they would help in the quest.
Theresa was strong willed and Dwalin respected her for that, but to some things, as Balin had pointed out, she was blind. Balin had said that she was blind to the fact his brother was so obviously smitten with her. She could get Dwalin to do anything, and Dwalin himself was irritated with it, but couldn't help it.
