12. Vincent: A Lover's Soul

"Why do we humans fail to realise the value of something we possess until we have lost it forever?"
~Samriddhi Saha

Van Gogh: A Tragedy Unsaid
Who had vandalised his ear in a fit of rage,
Just before he was caged,
With his entire life ravaged;
Secluded in a cage but so suffocating,
A cage through whose windows,
He would often gaze,
Gaze at the starlit sky,
And would let his mind fly.
Who had wrought his thoughts upon the white of the canvas,
'The Starry Night.'
Ballooned with such ethereality,
Wrought with such sagacity,
But still was he a real necessity,
For what be a failure's capability?
Vincent, thine art do they now but romanticise,
Which they had but once criticised,
They call Thee but the tragic lover,
But Vincent, what did you ever get from this selfish world,
Maybe pleasure from the violet and blue swirls,
Upon the canvas white.
Thy soul ever so precious and pure,
How could they ever but call Thee a failure?
For you had what they never did,
For you had the capability,
And tenacity to fashion life,
With such creativity,
Thine art but so exceptional!
So allure!
So pure!
During thine epochs of seclusion,
When thee would get exasperated from delusions,
How could thy brush but give life to something so splendid?!
That no earthly passion could have ever had,
But still had they called thee eccentric.
Those scenes of sunshine and flowers and warmth which you but reflected,
Upon the canvas white.
Thy sorrows and joys,
Thy fears and feats so thoughtfully upon the canvas white.
Had you but the courage to fight,
Fight against this pain ever so excruciating,
But like a lover's soul had you but conceived to cease,
Cease this pain ever so unbearable,
By putting a gun to thy breast,
To set thyself free,
For you had known
That this world never deserved someone as beautiful as thee.
O Vincent, the braveheart,
Had you been through such intensitiesy of distress!
For envied had they,
Envied thee,
Envied thine art to express.

Vincent Willem van Gogh was a Dutch post-impressionist painter who posthumously became one of the most famous and influential figures in the history of Western art. In a decade, he created about 2,100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of which date from the last two years of his life.
He suffered from severe mental illness i.e. manic depression, a chronic mental illness that affects many creative people. He also suffered from nightmares and also vandalised his earlobe in a fit of dementia. He was called a failure during his lifetime. However today, his paintings are some of the most expensive in the world. Many say that Vincent's arts are witnesses of the convergence of insanity and creativity. Vincent committed suicide in 1820 by putting a gun to his chest. Tragically, Vincent Van Gogh never got the recognition he deserved during his lifetime.
