Chapter 7: A Letter for Poe

The doorbell of the Smith's residence rang—and it is probably the most horrifying bell sound that they heard throughout the years that they live. Four pairs of eyes in the room looked at each other, urging one another to be the one opening the door.

"I think you should open it Poe" Phoebe said quietly—as if she's afraid Agatha who is on the other side of the door will heard her talking. Poe sighed and nodded timidly.

It's now or never, Poe thought.

Putting on a brave face, with shaking hands he opened the door for the spirit of Agatha.

"Hi Poe" Agatha said while smiling sweetly—if it was a few minutes ago or yesterday, in Poe's eyes, she probably will look like a normal Agatha, but now, things will never be the same again.

"What are you guys doing? Why don't you guys invite me?" Agatha said as her eyes—well, not exactly eyes since there's none of them, scanned across the room, landing at Mr. and Mrs. Smith, and lastly at Phoebe, to say that she is as brave as a lion would be an understatement—even after years of seeing ghost she will never get used to it.

"Hello Mr. and Mrs. Smith" Agatha smiled sweetly at them, "Phoebe" she said more seriously—it's like she is not happy with her presence here.

"Well, Atha, you said just this morning that you don't want to go anywhere today, that's why we don't exactly invite you, we don't know" Poe said trying to look casual by shrugging his shoulders, the others just nodded to what Poe said, either they are scared or fascinated to see a ghost.

"Is that so? Are you still mad at me for not going outside Poe? I really am sorry, what I meant was I like to go out at night rather than day" Agatha said while getting closer to Poe and reaching out to him—out of instinct Poe took a few steps back.

Agatha found it rather weird for Poe to do that, but she just shrugged it off and continued "See, its night now, that's why I joined you guys", "Ah, I see, and no, I am not mad at all Atha, it's just a spur of a moment kind of thing" Poe explained wholeheartedly.

Agatha just smiled knowingly and took a seat at one of the sofa, everyone—even though they don't want to, also took a seat in the other side of the sofa. Feeling sorry for Agatha, Poe is the only one that will sit by her side.

"So, what were you guys doing before I get here?" Agatha ask while taking in her surroundings. Mrs. Smith emerged from the kitchen bringing Agatha a fresh cup of tea—Agatha thanked Mrs. Smith and she just smiled in return.

Out of the corner of Poe's eyes he saw that Agatha was secretly holding the diary that she held dear—he wonders why Agatha decided to bring it out today out of all day, she never let it out of the house before.

"Nothing, we just talk about trivial things, about how school is going to end and stuff" Phoebe said smiling at Agatha—she just nods telling that she understands.

"What do you have over there Atha?" Poe asked looking expectantly at the diary that Atha always writes on. On instinct, Agatha pulls it closer to her chest, "Oh, this? It's my usual diary, you probably know it Poe, you've tried to get rid of it, one or two times" Agatha said while rolling her eyes, Poe just laughed at what she said—as a ghost or a spirit, she's pretty smart.

"Oh, did you bring it here so I can see it?" Poe asked looking hopeful—since the day that Agatha got the diary she never showed it to anyone, even Poe, that's why he's so curious about what is inside.

"Ehmm... yeah sure, here" Agatha said while handing Poe the book, "Are you sure? You usually won't even let me touch it, let alone read it" Poe asked looking at her hesitantly.

Poe knows how Agatha is, he's her best friend after all-- if there's one thing about Agatha is she never lets go the things she treasures the most, whether it is a person or a thing-- and surely, as far as his eyes can see, this diary worth more than anything in her life since her parents death, it's like her only chord to life.

"Just read it before I changed my mind" Agatha said while waving her hands in the air, "Alright, alright" Poe said chuckling nervously. He opened the first page of the book, and then the second, third and so on—until Poe gets to the last page, 13th October 2018, this is last year—the day Agatha got in a car accident.

Poe scans the words written across the page of that day—mostly before the day of 13th October, all she writes is about her daily basis in school or her normal life. But specifically, on 13th October 2018 she writes something a little bit unusual.

13th October 2018—Last day being human

If someday I have gone, that day would be today—

I just want to say thank you,

Mom and Dad, thank you, you both have been so good to me.

And Poe—if one day you realize that I have gone,

Please keep on loving me, until the day has come,

I love you, best friend, or—are we more than that?

Without looking up from the diary that Poe is reading, he asks Agatha who is sitting beside him "Atha, why your diary stops at 13th October 2018? Aren't you still writing it until today?", Poe heard the sound of a girl crying—he knows it from anywhere, it's Agatha.

Startled, he looked up and saw Agatha is already staring at him while crying with her hollow eyes—for the first time after she entered the house, this time she really looked like a dead person.

"Because I died that day Poe—I am already dead" Agatha answered sadly along with hiccups following her every words.
