chapter seventeen | the devil's trap

There was no question as to how the two would get to the Ministry of Magic in London, with Adam already having an idea in mind. Between nicking a couple of spare brooms from the Quidditch Changing Rooms to flying into the evening skies all the way to England, Rosie felt a mixture of anxiety and excitement, though it was preventing her from coming up with a plan once she and Adam arrived at the Ministry. She already knew Harry would protest the idea of them tagging along with whatever he and his friends were going to walk into, something extremely dangerous. There was no way Rosie would be able to forgive herself if she chose to stay behind, especially if something happened and her friends got hurt.

The sun had finally set by the time Rosie and Adam arrived in London, with the city lights beaming from below. The two eventually found a safe place to land and hide their brooms for the time being, carefully stepping onto the public streets and heading for the Ministry. They headed for the telephone box in Whitehall, entering inside, where Rosie watched as Adam dialed the six digits. She did her best not to get all flustered being so close to him as the telephone box slowly moved down to the Atrium, to which she thought the ride was a bit more lengthy than usual. So when they reached their destination, Rosie was the first to step out and make a dash for the lifts

"Rosie, wait!" Adam called after her.

"We've got to hurry and get to the others!" she shouted back.

"You're not going to be of any use if you walk into a trap and get yourself killed," he pointed out, finally catching up next to her.

Rosie didn't respond as she pressed a button to open the next available left, hurrying inside, with Adam following suit. She pressed another button for the Department of Mysteries, almost losing her balance when the lift jerked forward before going in reverse, finding herself stumbling next to Adam, who put out his hands to catch her in case she fell.

"You okay there?" he asked.

"Yeah," she answered, nodding her head and standing back up again, turning her head away for a brief moment when she felt how hot it was getting. After a moment of attempting to compose herself, she cleared her throat and looked straight ahead at the doors. "So, you still think this is a mad idea?"

Adam chuckled a little. "Absolutely. I can't believe you talked me into this."

"Well, it's not like you were going to let me go alone."

He raised his eyebrows, then nodded his head. "You're right about that." Pausing, he turned his head and looked at Rosie, his eyes filled with a softness that Rosie was very familiar with. "But I admire your bravery, Rosie."

She smiled a little. "I guess I just needed to push myself to see that."

Adam smiled back. "You're a very loyal friend, too." His expression all of a sudden turned more sad than ever. "Even though some people don't deserve that from you."

Rosie's smile faded, and her heart dropped at the thought of the Thomson twins. She felt an ache in her chest, remembering the last year she spent with them and Adam, all for their friendship to fall apart. Except now, Adam was standing beside her, willing to walk into a dangerous situation that she convinced him to do. He was a true friend.

"Thank you for coming with me, Adam," she said.

He shot her a small smile. "I'd follow you anywhere, Rosebud."

Rosie's heart skipped a beat, and she had a hard time taking her eyes off him after that.

All of a sudden, the lift came to an abrupt halt, with the voice of a woman ringing inside. "Department of Mysteries."

Adam looked over at Rosie again, his wand already in his hand. "You ready?"

Rosie took a deep breath, nodding as she grabbed her wand as well. "Let's do this."

Once the doors opened, Adam was the first to exit out of the lift, with Rosie following suit. Her heartbeat went up with every step she took, looking around the dark hallway that led to a door at the very end. She felt her hand getting sore from how tight she was holding her wand. Chills down her back just from being in the cold and gloomy atmosphere.

"You okay, Rosie?" Adam asked.

Swallowing hard, she nodded her head. "I'm fine." Except she was starting to feel far from it.

But he nodded in response and muttered, "Okay."

The rest of the walk seemed like an eternity, and Rosie was ready to hurry inside before her nerves really took over. But with Adam beside her, there was no way he'd let her back down, not when they had come this far. After all, they were only doing this to help Harry, though the last thing he needed to do was get himself into more trouble that would put him and others in danger. Nevertheless, that would only happen to a boy that was known for surviving the Killing Curse as a baby, one that was cast by the darkest wizard of all time.

When the two finally reached the door to the Department of Mysteries, neither one of them moved, almost as if one of them was waiting for the other to lift their hand and open the door. Rosie glanced over at Adam, who turned his head and locked eyes with hers.

"Don't leave my side," he stated in a firm tone.

"I won't," she replied.

So when Adam heard the reassurance in her voice, he lifted his hand, twisted the knob, and pulled the door open.

Rosie wasn't sure what to expect inside the Department of Mysteries when she stepped inside (though she figured that was the entire point of this place). There were nothing but shelves filled with glass balls on each side, going down the endless aisles. Stepping into the large room, she scanned around, finding it hard to see much beyond a few shelves.

"Lumos," Rosie and Adam muttered in unison, the end of their wands lighting up.

"You sure this is the right place?" Adam questioned, his expression puzzled.

"Yes, I'm sure," Rosie answered. "I heard Harry mention it."

Adam raised his eyebrows, sighing. "What's in here that's so important he came all this way for?"

Rosie didn't respond, for she was more curious as to why You-Know-Who wanted him here in the first place.

Finally, Adam started walking down the hall, and Rosie was quick to stay by his side. She tried to pay more attention to as far as she could see down the aisles, along with picking up any more voices nearby, just to know if Harry actually made it here. But what happened if they didn't find him? What would happen if they ran into You-Know-Who instead? Rosie wondered if Adam had thought about it, knowing the consequences to follow if he was caught trying to help the one person who was supposed to be his enemy.

But Rosie wasn't able to give it much more thought when Adam stopped all of a sudden.

"Do you hear that?" he inquired.

"Hear what?"

Adam quickly turned around to look behind him, though confusion came over him once again. "Thought I heard something."

Rosie looked behind her as well and saw no one in sight, becoming just as confused as Adam. Though she didn't say anything to him about it, starting to turn her head back to face the long hallway ahead of her again. However, she jumped back when her eyes met a familiar face in front of her.

"Merlin's beard, Gavin!" she exclaimed, letting out a breath, trying to get her heart rate back down to look at the Thomson boy.

"Crikey!" Gavin cried, eyes going wide as he glanced over at Adam. "What the hell are you two doing here?"

"We could ask you the same question," Adam responded.

Exhaling, Gavin remained tense as a worried look came over his face. "It's Greer. She's gone mad."

"Oh, well, that's not new information," Rosie mumbled.

"No, you don't understand. I think she's really gone off the deep end this time. She kept going on about something happening tonight at the Department of Mysteries."

"Did she say what, exactly?" Adam asked.

Gavin shook his head. "No, but whatever it is, I have a feeling it's something bad."

"Yes, it is."

The three turned their heads towards the voice coming from behind them, where they found Harry standing there, along with Ron, Hermione, Neville, Luna, and Ginny, wands lit and at the ready.

"Potter," Gavin muttered. "What the hell are you doing here?"

"I could ask all of you the same question," he retorted, his eyes then focusing on Rosie. "After I told you that we didn't need your help."

Rosie let out a scoff. "I wasn't going to let you just storm in the Ministry without any backup."

"As you can see, I have plenty of backup."

"And you think it'll be enough? None of you have any idea what you're going up against." Rosie paused, the courage filling up inside her. "Harry, there was no way I was going to let you face this alone. You can be mad at me all you want, but I'm not leaving, and neither are Adam and Gavin. We want to help, so that's what we're going to do."

Everyone watched and waited for Harry to open his mouth to spit back a rebuttal, and it only made the tension rise faster. Under any other circumstance, Rosie wouldn't have gotten so snippy, especially with Harry Potter, of all people. But there were many changes that happened since the school year started, with Rosie being one of them, accepting the fact that she was no longer the same person who stepped onto the Hogwarts Express back in September, something that her friends needed to understand.

And by the passive look on Harry's face, he was beginning to see that.

"I'm guessing I can't talk either one of you to take her and go," he said as he glanced over at Adam and Gavin.

"Not a chance," Adam answered.

He let out a sigh in response. "Follow my lead, then. Be ready for anyone else that might be in here."

Rosie, Adam, and Gavin obliged, stepping aside to let Harry pass, then joining the others in the back. She watched as Harry looked at his surroundings, paying attention to the shelves, then picking up the pace, with the others following suit. While Harry continued farther down the room, the rest stopped when they got to row 97. Harry then turned back around, retracing his steps as he began to count to himself.

"Ninety-two...ninety-three...ninety-four...ninety-five..." Harry mumbled, coming to a stop before he could utter the next number. He glanced at the empty intersection in front of him, shining the light from his wand, his face filled with worry when he looked back at the others. "He should be here!"

"Who should be here?" Gavin questioned in a low voice.

"Harry," Neville spoke up from behind before anyone could answer Gavin's question. "I think this one's got your name on it."

Everyone turned around to see what Neville had found, staring at the glass ball sitting on a stand, with what appeared to be smoke circling inside. The group took a few steps back as Harry made his way to them again, his eyes fixated on the object. Breathing heavily, he slowly lifted his hand and picked it up, taking a closer look. For a moment, Rosie thought she could hear the faint sound of mumbling that came from where Harry was standing. She wondered if anyone else could hear it, too.

Clap, clap, clap, clap.

Startled, the group turned around, and Rosie almost let out a gasp when she saw the face of her former best friend just a few feet away, followed by a taller figure wearing a mask coming up from behind her.

"Well done, Potter," Greer stated, a smug expression forming across her lips. "You got exactly what we need."

"How about you give me back Sirius, then?" he retorted. "Where is he?"

"You know, you really should learn to tell the difference between dreams..." The man paused as he pulled out his wand and waved it in front of him, letting the mask dissolve and reveal his face and long blond hair. "...and reality."

"Bloody hell," Gavin muttered, his breath shaky. "Not Lucius Malfoy."

"Where's Sirius?" Harry asked again.

"You saw only what the Dark Lord wanted you to see," Lucius explained. "Now hand me the prophecy."

"If you do anything to us, I'll break it," Harry warned him.

Suddenly, the brief moment of silence was broken by the echo of cackling coming from behind Lucius and Greer.

"Oh, no," Adam and Gavin mumbled in unison.

"He knows how to play!" the voice of an older woman cried out, revealing her wide-eyed face and thick bushy hair as she continued to strut towards Lucius and Greer with her wand close up against her temple. "Itsy-bitsy...baby...Potter."

The only one who seemed to be phased by the woman was Neville, to which Rosie noticed the way he gripped his wand a bit tighter. "Bellatrix Lestrange," he spoke up.

"Neville Longbottom, is it?" she questioned, a smirk creeping upon her lips. "How's Mum and Dad?"

"Better, now that they're about to be avenged!" He lifted his wand and pointed it at Bellatrix, and she did the same towards him. Though Harry stuck his arm out in front of him as a way to stop him from going any further.

When Greer pointed her wand at Neville as well, Rosie was quick to do the same towards her former best friend, with Adam and Gavin on each side, concerned expressions on their faces that caused Rosie to worry herself. Although if it came down to it, she was confident that both boys wouldn't let Greer harm her.

Before anyone could shoot a spell, Lucius intervened. "Now, let everybody just calm down, shall we? All we want is that prophecy."

Everyone put their wands down with some reluctance. Rosie and Greer didn't take their eyes off each other when doing so.

"Why did Voldemort need me to come and get this?" Harry asked.

Bellatrix let out a gasp. "You dare speak his name?" she whispered. "YOU FILTHY HALF-BLOOD!"

"It's alright," Lucius said. "He's just a curious lad. Aren't you?"

Harry merely shot him a glare in response.

"Prophecies can only be retrieved by those about whom they are made," Greer spoke up. "Which is lucky for you, really."

"And why's that?" Harry questioned.

Greer let out a scoff. "Oh, come on, Potter. Isn't it obvious? All the answers you've been looking for are right there in the palm of your hand."

Rosie began to feel uneasy when she noticed a couple Death Eaters out of the corner of her eye on the left. She looked to the right, then behind her, only to see that they were surrounded from every angle. Her heart was racing at how intense things were getting the longer she and the rest of her friends stood there, while Lucius, Bellatrix, and Greer were walking towards them.

"Haven't you always wondered what was the reason for the connection between you and the Dark Lord, hm? Why he was unable to kill you when you were just an infant?" Lucius paused as he and the other two stopped, raising his eyebrows. "Don't you want to know the secret of your scar? Like Miss Thompson said, all the answers are there, Potter, in your hand. All you have to do is give it to me. And I can show you everything."

The longer Harry stayed silent, the more desperate showed in Lucius' eyes. Rosie took a deep breath and waited for Harry to say something. She glanced around to see the rest of her friends focusing on the Death Eaters, their wands at the ready. Taking a deep breath, Rosie kept her focus on Harry as he looked down at the prophecy in between his fingers.

"I've waited fourteen years," he finally said.

"I know," Lucius stated, putting on his fake sympathetic expression.

Harry then looked up at him with hard eyes. "I guess I can wait a little longer. Now!"

At the same time, everyone shouted, "Stupefy!" aiming at the Death Eaters, in which they were either hit by the spell or Disapparated before they could be hit. Without another thought, the group took off running.

No one dared to look back as Harry attempted to lead them back to the entrance. When they made the first turn down an aisle, black smoke appeared, revealing Lucius as he stuck his arm out for Harry to give him the prophecy. The group stopped in their tracks for a moment, then Harry, Ron, and Hermione took off one way, with Neville, Ginny, and Luna sprinting in the opposite direction, leaving Rosie, Adam, and Gavin behind. Adam motioned the two of them to follow him down one of the aisles, and they obliged with no hesitation.

Adrenaline pumped through Rosie's body as she kept up with the boys, her eyes staying sharp for any Death Eaters that might pop up at any given moment. She began to pant, hoping she wouldn't run out of breath and slow herself down. However, given how fast her heart was racing, she didn't think they were stopping anytime soon.

That was until they reached an intersection, unsure of which way to go next.

"Now what?" Gavin asked in a panic.

"Just follow me," Adam said as he was about to head down another aisle.

"Leaving so soon?" the familiar voice of Greer rang nearby as she appeared from behind one of the shelves. "I thought we were all having fun here."

"Well, you've got a twisted sense of humor if you think this is fun," Gavin retorted.

Greer's smug expression only got wider. "What can I say? I've always been the fun twin." She looked over at Rosie and Adam. "Isn't that right, guys?"

"You're insane, Greer," Adam told her.

"And yet you decided to stay with me for so long." She paused again, chuckling and shaking her head. "Even after all we've been through."

"Yeah, well, I finally came to my senses."

"Hm." She took a step forward, furrowing her brows. "You know, we could've had a nice future together." Her eyes darted towards Rosie. "Put all of the childish things behind us and move on."

Rosie resisted the urge to roll her eyes. You're one to talk about childish things, she thought.

"That's exactly what I did," Adam retorted, his voice more firm this time.

Greer let out a scoff in response. "What's that supposed to mean?"

"I think you already know."

Before Greer could come up with a rebuttal, a streak of red came flying their way, causing the blonde to break up from the trio in front of her. Adam grabbed Rosie's hand and pulled her down the aisle, with Gavin following suit, leaving Greer behind. The trio were racing past the shelves, trying to find a way out, when they came up to another intersection and ended up colliding into the rest of the group, causing some of them to let out a grunt or a scream. Though everyone was relieved when they realized that none of them were Death Eaters, standing around as they all started to pant in order to catch their breaths. Except the feeling didn't last long as a puff of black smoke started heading their way at a fast speed, and Rosie could tell that it wasn't just one Death Eater coming for them. She took a deep breath and raised her wand, preparing herself for when they strike.

Except they didn't, because Ginny Weasley already began waving her wand.

"Reducto!" she shouted, not flinching once as the blast of blue and white light shot out of her wand and heading straight for the Death Eaters. After the light faded, there were no Death Eaters in sight.

Though before anyone could relax again, the sound of rumbling echoed from each direction. It was when everyone could hear glass shattering from a distance that they started to panic a little again, only having the feeling grow as it drew closer. It was when the prophecies from the shelves began to fall that it was time to get the hell out of the Department of Mysteries.

"Get back to the door!" Harry yelled, turning around and leading the others back towards the entrance, taking a sharp turn to the left, with everyone else following close behind him.

Rosie was having a hard time keeping up as she felt her legs burning from all of the running she was doing. Although when she heard the shelves behind her collapsing, she did her best to pick up the pace, stumbling a little in the process. She was ready to fall to the ground by the time they made it to the door, only when she made it through the frame, the floor was not there to catch her fall.

Her heart began to sink as she let out a scream, along with the rest of the group as they continued to plunge into a dark abyss. Rosie had no idea how long she had been falling, but she went ahead and braced herself for impact, hoping it would be quick and painless.

But like before, she didn't feel a thing. In fact, her body stopped just a few inches off the ground before the invisible forcefield let her go. Rosie let out a grunt as she lifted her head to look up at where she and the rest of her friends landed.

"You okay, Rosie?" Adam asked next to her as he stood up, holding out his hand for her to take.

"Yeah, I think so," she replied, tightly gripping his hand for him to pull her back on her feet, noticing the scratches on his forehead. "You?"

Adam nodded his head. "Same."

Gavin exhaled loudly next to them, wiping the dust off his shirt. "I'm fine, too. Thanks for asking."

Adam playfully rolled his eyes in response, while Rosie merely shook her head at him. Like the others, she began taking a better look at the room, seeing the rocks formed in one big circle around an empty archway in the center, with a light shining down on it. Rosie noticed the curtain-like flutter that hung in the archway, curious to know what it was and why the Ministry of Magic had it here.

"Department of Mysteries," Ron said. "They got that bit right, didn't they?"

No one made any more comments as they continued looking around the room, trying to find a way out. Harry, however, was more interested in the archway, slowly taking a few steps closer to it.

"The voices," he stated. "Can you tell what they're saying?"

With a confused look on her face, Rosie glanced at the others and shook her head, unable to hear any voices. And by the same puzzled looks, with the exception of Luna Lovegood, it seemed no one else could hear them, either.

"There aren't any voices, Harry," Hermione spoke up. "Let's get out of here."

"I hear them, too," Luna added, walking behind Harry.

Eventually, the rest followed suit, though there was some reluctance to each step they took.

"Harry, it's just an empty archway," Hermione said, her voice sounding more shaky than before. "Please, Harry."

But instead of listening to his friend, Harry turned around, almost in a panic, his wand pointed towards the ceiling. "Get behind me!" he shouted at the others.

Everyone obliged and had their wands out as well, their eyes glued to above, waiting for the next surprise that would serve as another obstacle for getting out of the Ministry of Magic. It was just when Rosie thought maybe nothing was going to make an appearance, her vision was clouded by thick, black smoke, and she was unable to get rid of it. After making many attempts to escape, she felt her feet being swept off the floor, letting out a shriek. It wasn't long before she was back on the ground again, but couldn't move as an arm was wrapped around her neck, along with a wand pressed against the side of her temple. Rosie only got a glimpse at the others in the same position as her, with the exception of Harry still standing in the middle by the archway. Panting, she could hear whimpering coming from Hermione just a few feet away from her, followed by an evil chuckle in another direction, to which it was Lucius Malfoy walking up to Harry, the sound of his cane clicking against the stone floor.

"Did you actually believe...or were you truly naive enough to think...that children stood a chance...against us?" Lucius looked over at Bellatrix Lestrange for a brief moment, who smirked his way as she had Neville's head against her shoulder. He then turned back around towards Harry, extending his hand out with the palm facing up. "I'll make this simple for you, Potter. Give me the prophecy now or watch your friends die."

Rosie gasped at Lucius' words as they hung over Harry like a dark cloud that was waiting to burst.

"Don't give it to him, Harry!" Neville shouted.

"Shh!" Bellatrix hissed in his ear.

Harry took a glance at everyone around the room, and it was when he locked eyes with Ron and Hermione that something in his eyes changed, like the idea that Dumbledore's Army lost to the bad guys once again was starting to settle in the back of his mind. Rosie spotted Adam and Gavin from across the room, seeing the sad look in their eyes, and wondered if they were thinking the same thing, too. From their standpoint, it looked as though the one person who had the guts to stand up to the people they were once on the same side with, was accepting the fact that there was no way out of this, maybe almost questioning why they switched sides in the first place.

And when Harry looked down at the prophecy before reluctantly handing it to Lucius, Rosie's heart sank. This was it. This would be the end of Dumbledore's Army. All that hard work over the last few months would lead up to this moment of defeat.

It was all for nothing, she thought.

As Lucius was relishing in the moment of his win, a streak of white light appeared behind him, where a man stood there once it disappeared, walking towards Lucius and Harry. Rosie's eyes just about went wide when she took a better look at him.

Is that...Sirius Black?

"Get away from my godson," he said before throwing a punch to Lucius' face and knocking him to the ground.

There was no time to process what just happened as more flashes of light came through, and Rosie was broken free from the grip that was once around her neck. She turned around to see the Death Eater no longer standing there, then back at the crowd of adults appearing in every direction. Finally looking over at Adam and Gavin, she jumped off the rock and began racing towards them as the streaks of blue and red began to fly all over the place. Rosie was halfway to reaching them when a flash of red came her way, causing her to drop to the ground and letting out a grunt when she fell to the floor like last time. She quickly looked up and moved the hair out of her face, only to catch Greer staring down at her.

"You can't get away from me that easily," she snarled.

Rosie scrambled to get up, breathing heavily as she fumbled her wand in between her fingers. "You really want to become one of them, don't you?"

Greer scoffed, twirling her wand. "Going to try and talk me out of it? It's too late for that. I've made my choice, just like Adam and Gavin made theirs." She paused, her eyes going dark. "I can't be friends with the enemy."

That statement alone was enough to make Rosie's blood boil. "Well, in that case, neither can I."

The blonde flared up her nostrils, raising her wand, ready to shout a spell--

"Expelliarmus!"

In a matter of seconds, Greer's wand flew out of her hand, a shocked expression on her face. Rosie turned to see Adam and Gavin no longer in their spot, but an Auror standing there instead. Her mouth dropped open when she saw who it was that disarmed Greer.

"Dad?"

"Rosie!" he shouted back, heading towards the girls, but Greer had already run off by the time he got there.

"What are you doing here?"

"I should be asking you the same question!" he replied. "But there's no time to explain. You need to get out of here."

"But--"

"Now! I'll be right behind you!"

Nodding her head, Rosie sprinted off, though she couldn't help but scan her eyes around the chaos that was happening around her. While she should've been looking for the rest of the group, she found herself trying to spot Greer in the middle of everyone dueling. However, she only had a few seconds to look before she heard someone shouting her name from a distance, then a hand grabbing ahold of her arm.

"Rosie!" Adam was almost out of breath as he approached her, letting out a sigh of relief. "Thank Merlin you're okay. Come on, we've gotta get out of here."

"Where are the others?" she asked as Adam pulled her along behind the rocks.

"The Order's got them. Well, most of them."

"Who's missing?"

"Who do you think?"

Rosie caught a glimpse at the archway and saw Harry alongside Sirius Black as the two were fighting Lucius and another Death Eater. She should've known he would want to stay and fight, especially since his godfather was there to help.

"They've got to get out of here, too," she said.

"I know, but for now we've got to--"

"Avada Kedavra!"

BOOM!

Rosie spun her head around to find out where the loud explosion came from, only to have her heart drop at the sight of a rock bursting into a bunch of pieces, with her dad flying in the air and hitting the ground hard.

"No," she breathed, shaking her head. "No! Dad! She attempted to go back to him, but Adam wrapped his arms around her waist in order to stop her. "Let go of me, Adam!"

"Rosie--"

"I can't just leave him!" The tears began to fall from her face. She couldn't believe it...her dad...he was--

"Rosie, listen to me!" he said in a raised voice. "It didn't hit him."

She looked up at him with blurry eyes. "What?"

"The curse didn't hit him."

Panting, she wiped her eyes and gave him a confused look. "Well, if it didn't hit my dad, then who--"

All of a sudden, the sound of Harry screaming and sobbing erupted all around the room.

Rosie glanced over and saw the former Professor Lupin holding Harry, who was trying to break free. She then looked to see that Sirius Black was nowhere in sight anymore, which made her realize that he was the one who got hit with the Killing Curse. Even though she had no idea who cast it, Harry seemed to know as he pushed Lupin away and ran off, disappearing behind a wall.

It was when the overwhelming feeling rushed through her head that Rosie collapsed into Adam's arms, letting the tears form in her eyes once again and her heart sinking deeper at the bottom of her stomach. Through her wet eyes, she could still see her dad lying there, almost looking lifeless the longer she saw him not moving.

"Come on," Adam whispered, taking her arms and helping her walk the same place where Harry went to, shielding her eyes when they passed her father.

"But...my dad..." Rosie croaked.

"They're getting him now."

Rosie swallowed hard and didn't try to get one last look when they made it out of the room and back into the main lobby of the Ministry of Magic. There, she met up with the rest of her friends, who were staring at Professor Dumbledore on the floor, holding an unconscious Harry. Across the lobby was an astonished Minister Fudge and a group of Aurors standing behind him, who were just as shocked as he was from what they were looking at.

"What happened?" Adam asked.

Gavin looked over at him and took a deep breath. "It was You-Know-Who."

Rosie held her breath at his answer, though she wasn't too surprised about it, given the fact that this was all just a trap for Harry, one that only worked enough to bring him here. Except it left one person dead and another injured, both of which weren't the people You-Know-Who was targeting. Either way, the dark wizard didn't care, for in the end, he got to hurt Harry. But not only did he hurt him, but also everyone else who showed up tonight on his behalf.

So the good side had no choice but to accept this loss, and it became clear that nothing would ever be the same after the events that unfolded in the Department of Mysteries tonight.
