Chapter 4 - The Devil Reads Manga

"I'm impressed." Callahan said, a smirk playing on his lips.

My heart took a speed as I turned around and looked at him with a worried pair of eyes. If Fred told my mom and dad I would be doomed.

"Don't get too impressed," I went near my couch and sat on it palming my face and said, "If he says anything to my parents, I'm finished."

Callahan raised a brow and asked, "Why?"

"Because they allowed me to come here because of him!" I answered and now my worry reached every cell in my body.

He was the next town boy and we fell in love when we were in high school. Fred was the guy who was attractive and came from a good, sophisticated background, which made my parents agree with our relationship.

Fred would take any girl he wished yet he fell in love with me--or that what I had thought.

When he was selected to a prestigious college, I wanted to follow him too. There was another reason that I wanted to go out of that good 'ol town but I thought we were fated to be together. It was almost like a dream to have a boyfriend like him.

"Oh! No! Nothing is fated, honey," Callahan said as he pushed me out of the couch to a chair and placed food before me as he added, "That's some rubbish bullshit."

I gave him a confused look and shouted, "Stop reading my mind, will you?"

"Not happening," he said as he pushed the spoon in my mouth to stop my next outcome and as the food touched my tongue, I moaned, forgetting all of my anger.

"That's —that's amazing!" I moaned again as the taste felt like I had never eaten a dish like this before.

"Don't moan like this, otherwise I will take it another way." Callahan said, making a frown on my face as I glared at him.

Callahan smiled gently and said, "You're welcome. I boiled the demon eye balls with hell onions and then put clawfish fingers in it with some witch blood. The dark sand sprinkles seemed to enhance its taste."

My eyes widened as I got up, "Oh, boy! I need to vomit it out."

Callahan laughed as the dimple on his one cheek became prominent and said, "I'm kidding."

I looked at him suspiciously and asked, "You sure?"

Callahan leaned from where he was seated and his face became so close to me that I felt my heart pumping all of the blood to my cheeks.

"If I wasn't sure, I would have done that yesterday and made you a minion of mine, Carson." He said his green eyes sparkling and turned hollow as I could see the depth in him. The darkness was so deep yet fascinating.

"Your eyes are like a dark sky with twinkling stars." I said and Callahan looked at me with a deep frown as he pulled away.

"You are one heck of an angline." He said.

I blinked. "What the hell is angline?"

"A part that represents being an angel."

"Am I an angel?" I mused at myself.

Callahan laughed, "Don't flatter yourself. A person who could become an angel is also called angeline."

"Am I that great?" I was a little surprised but took it as an opportunity to praise myself.

However, Callahan just knew how to crush my positive mood. "No. You are not."

I nodded as I mumbled while eating, "Thanks for letting me know, though."

As I finished my food, Callahan stood up and announced, "Alright! I have to go now. I'll see you in a few hours."

"Or you can say in a few decades?"

"How sweet of you... But I don't leave my contractor alone." He crossed the kitchen slab and pecked on my cheek before vanishing into thin air as the spoon dropped from my fingers and I found my cheeks warm yet again.

*****

It was an off day and the whole day I spent reading manga on my mobile. I had been missing this! And maybe Fred...

But whenever I recalled his threats I felt a pang in my heart. How could he always be so unfair to me? My lips trembled. More importantly, how could I fall in love with him? I felt sick to my stomach seeing how hypocritical he was. Now my parents would say it was all my fault for going into a relationship.

I had even followed him to an unknown place--well, I knew the place now after working for a year but at first, I had come for him.

Now that he left me, did I have anything in this city?

"Yes, you have."

The voice startled me as I turned around. I saw Callahan was standing in his previous day's clothes. Black t-shirt, black jeans and his long hair falling on his shoulders. He flopped on the bed beside me as his weight rocked the mattress.

"Why are you here?" I asked.

"To check if my contractor is in a good mood."

"I am."

"You're not." Callahan took my phone as I shouted frustratedly, "Give me back my phone!"

He looked at it as I felt her heart leaping in rounds. He would make fun of my interests as well. I liked manga and comics even though I was an adult.

"I have read that manga before." Callahan said, making me surprised.

"You read manga?"

"Yeah. I love anime and manga. I've been a great fan of Tom and Jerry as well." He said, which brought a smile to my face.

"What about Naruto?" I asked as I wanted to know if he was lying or not.

"Itachi is my favorite." He answered as I nodded. He wasn't lying.

I got excited as I agreed, "I love Itachi too."

Callahan smirked at me as he asked, "Wanna see me in the cosplay of itachi?"

"No way!" My belly filled with butterflies as I had always wanted to try the cosplay at least once in my life as every otaku cosplay at least once otherwise they aren't otaku at all. But for Fred, I didn't. He had always made fun whenever he saw cosplay. So, I never dared to try.

He brought out his phone and scrolled as I seemed barely able to contain my excitement.

"There..." He gave me the phone and boy! Did he look damn hot in Itachi's clothes! and his hair was long naturally, it suited him perfectly in Itachi cosplay.

I grinned and asked, "So, Devils read mangas?"

"Of course, we read manga! What do you think we are here for?"

"Erm... To read... Manga?"

"No. To enjoy our times in human-ly ways––and also get contracts, that is." Callahan shrugged, making me narrow my eyes at him.

"What?" Callahan asked and said, "Anyway, let's get going."

Before I could say anything he answered, "We are going to a party!"

"No...!"

"Yes." Callahan said and threw a package at me which I caught in the air somehow. He said, "Get dressed."

I looked at the package and moved my eyes at him, "You bought me a dress?"

"Yes, and now get dressed." He said. His smile was still playing on his lips.

"But why? And, I have work tomorrow." I said.

Callahan's smile still stayed on his lips as he said in a very, very gentle voice, "Carson?"

"Yes?"

"If you don't get dressed in ten minutes, I will take off all of your clothes and put the damn dress on you and I will conduct everything myself, personally." Although he was giving a gentle smile, somehow it didn't feel gentle at all, especially with the threats along with it.

"I—" I nodded and said stiffly, "Sir, yes, sir!"

He seemed to be flattered by it as he nodded and I added, "Can you just wait outside?"

"Of course, sweetheart."

And he left. As soon as he closed the door behind him, I released the breath I didn't know I was holding all this time. What was wrong with him?

I was angry and frightened as well but somehow, even though he was a devil, I wasn't scared of him. It was the opposite.

The whole day, after he left, I felt lonely but when Callahan came I was instantly recharged by his presence. Was that also another perk of the devil?

I shrugged my shoulders as I opened the package. The material was fine and as I brought it out I scowled. "You gotta be kidding me."
