Chapter 23 - The Devil gets a Warning

Callahan's POV

I stood there as Carson closed the doors behind her saying, "I don't mind as long as you promise to be gentle."

I blinked.

My auditory system might have been acting strange lately as I heard the human saying she didn't mind.

She didn't mind?

Bah! Carson McAllen was a human who lived her life on her ethics. There wasn't any way she would give in to it. The moment she gave in, that meant the end of Hell.

But still the words she said rang in my ears. Did my auditory system get junk after centuries of using those?

Should I get a quick check up with Gorgonzola, our demon doctor? I heard she was the best. But I had never needed to go there as my body always regenerated my wounds. There was a spark to being a first generation Devil.

You regenerate fast. You have more powers but not like Lucifer.

Now that I had mentioned Lucifer, I had to go visit him. But that damn fallen angel! I could not find him and he had been missing for a decade.

I recalled Carson could understand our ancient Devil language. How could that be possible? She didn't have any traits of a demon or a devil, not even an angel. At first, I thought she was an Angeline, an angel daughter, or a child of an angel but I searched her background, even her generation history. There was no mention about mating with an angel.

The more I watched over her, the more confused I felt. Droyth's charm spell couldn't even charm her. He was the strongest incubus in all over Hell. If his powers didn't work on her then she wasn't an ordinary human.

As if that wasn't enough.

Miorith, she was a second generation devil yet her chaos couldn't harm her. She was brooding over the other day when Carson threw the ice cream on her face. My lips twitched and I heard Carson turning on the shower.

"Hello, brother." A voice came before me and it was Gretarioth sitting on the chair Carson sits on.

"What are you doing here?" I asked through gritted teeth.

"Just checking on your little human." He smirked which made my stomach boil with internal flames of hell. He always managed to get into my nerves.

I smiled, showing an emotion exactly opposite of what I was feeling. "I am afraid, you don't have to do that. I can take care of my little human."

"Oh! Why are you so possessive over her, dear brother?" Gretarioth asked, a little doubt played in his eyes.

I asked back in reply. "Why have you taken an interest in my human?"

He grinned and I felt the need to punch his face. There was something that told me Gretarioth had something in his mind and I could not understand what it was. He shrugged. "Who knows?"

He had always been trying to get my things. The souls, my position and my hells. I knew for a fact that he acted on jealousy but he was always carefree with his attitude and responsibility. That was the reason he wasn't chosen for a general despite being almost as strong as me. Almost.

I was assigned with Seven Hells and I wasn't going to give anyone my position even if I was bored. But after the contract with Carson, I didn't feel much bored as my eyes always stayed on her even if I wasn't with her.

Well, if I said that she would throw tantrums and my most favorite scene would be when she would get flustered. It felt nice when I heard her heartbeats.

I looked at Gretarioth as he looked like he had gotten some bigger fish. Although I never liked to mandle in his businesses, this time it felt a bit unsettling. Why was he on cloud demon?

"Maybe because I found out that your little human can understand our language." He said and my face darkened.

"Who told you that?" I asked with a grim face as Gretarioth's grin broadened. Ah! Then I recalled when I wasn't here, Gretarioth and Miorith met her in the cafe. Was that day, he came to know?

There were some forbidden spells that were written in ancient language even though our history was written in that language which was a big deal.

The previous Devils' secrets were all written in the language, their secret arts, spells and some things that were better not known. Those were the biggest assets for any of the lower class devils or demons even for angels. For years, angels wanted to dig those up but we, the first generation devils were assigned to protect all of those. For any cost.

And if anyone knew that Carson could read, they would come after her. Even the angels could come after her because I had a good reputation among the angels so...

"Oh! C'mon, Devionth, what will happen if words spread out?" A menacing aura sipped out of Gretarioth as he threatened. Well, he tried to threaten. I narrowed my eyes on him.

His threats weren't going to make me feel vulnerable. For devil's sake, I was Devionth. There was a reason why Satan chose me to be the general of Seven Hells. I sat on my chair across the slab as I always do and my previous emotion was replaced with a small smile.

"Not much. Some rolling heads, hands and limbs." I shrugged.

"What about if the angels come to know?" Mischief danced on his eyes. "How will you protect your little girl when a full angel troupe comes after her? You know they are as powerful as you."

"Try telling them." I dared him as my face said the confidence I had in me and in my minions. "I have my ways to protect my little girl."

Just because I was away from my Hells didn't mean I had abandoned my work or my responsibilities as a general. And my men? They were trained by me for that matter. If that time comes, when we had to fight with angels, they would gladly sacrifice themselves for me.

And if they didn't... simple, I would cut their payment.

Gretarioth watched me for a while as if he was studying me. We may have been brothers from the same womb but he was still a child before he could surpass me.

Gretarioth said thoughtfully. "Why are you so obsessed with her?"

"Well, of course, because she is special." And she was my contracted soul. I had come down to Earth after a few centuries and she was the first one who had stumbled on my doors. I didn't even have plans to get souls now but why would I kick away the opportunity when it had come knocking my door on its own.

"Well I can see that. But you weren't this obsessed with your previous contracted souls." He remarked but now his playful demeanor was replaced with a seriousness which made me a little shocked. Why was he interested in my souls anyways? And how did he know that?

Was he keeping a watch on me these years?

Gretarioth was a devil who liked to play around with people or devils. He was a devil of mischief. Well, all devils were mischevious but he was more. He had no responsibility for hell, he had no goal apart from killing me also he had no girlfriends.

You don't have any girlfriend either. My mind spoke.

Alright. We are busy beings. We don't need girlfriends.

But Gretarioth was right. There was a small tingling sensation in my stomach that stirred up as soon as my brother said that. I had no clue why I was so obsessed with Carson. I believe I had done nothing to prove I was obsessed. Or, did I?

I ran my head. No. All I did was merely to finish my contract with her as soon as possible.

I knew she was special because our spells won't work on her. But I was curious about her. She dealt with other devils that ordinary humans wouldn't. She didn't even feel scared or frightened around me, but that because I never did anything that would give her a bad image of me. Maybe they were mistaking my curiosity with obsession.

Then flashes of memories came. She indeed was scared the day I saved her from getting hit by a truck. I could still recall the round eyes of her, fear etched on them.

Because I was angry and she should learn her limits with me being around her. Her stubbornness was cute and adorable in a way but surpassing the limit had always gotten my buttons.

"Gretarioth, go back. I am busy." I said as I heard Carson turning off the shower and I didn't want her to see Gretarioth or hear us talking about her behind her back.

"Busy catering your human?" He mocked and my jaw clenched. Honestly, what was his problem?

I leaned over and caught his shirt's collar in my grip as I yanked him toward me. He was getting on my nerves now. Our faces closed the distance as I warned him. "I am not babysitting her and you know it very well that all of these are for that contract. Mind your language from the next time."

I could feel my eyes turning hollow and my horns growing on my head. "I will take her soul away with me once all of these are over."

And that was the prime reason for my coming back to Earth often. I just wanted it to finish early so I could get a soul. Although I could try to make more contracts with humans, I decided against it as I still had a lot of work left in Hell which needed my immediate attention.

He smiled but he didn't turn back to his original form instead he said, "I don't know about that but let me warn you something."

I released him as he straightened his shirt with padding on them with his hands. "There might be some people coming in your way. You better prepare for that."

He stood up as we both heard Carson opening the bathroom door. I knew he hadn't come to say her hi. He came because of this...to warn me.

Which gave me the shock of a lifetime. Gretarioth, who once wanted to kill me with the Purgatory Sword, came all the way to warn me...?

The Purgatory Sword was the only weakness we devils and angels had. Because it was the only sword that could kill us. Aging, time could not but that piece can do it easily. Since it was hidden again. He acquired it after reading the truth of life and death on a stone tablet that only the first generation devils knew where it was.

We heard soft footsteps padding against the marble floor as Gretarioth said before vanishing. "You better not disappoint me, brother. Because you are going to get killed by me."
