Chapter 21 - The Devil came to Spice up

I looked at him as my tears ran down, wetting my cheeks. I couldn't be more relieved when I saw Callahan was there.

I stood up immediately and I ran toward him. Without thinking, I hugged him and buried my face on his chest as I shook under his embrace. I was still in a panic and I could not ever expect myself to revolt back at Devis.

"Now, now. I don't like to eat sadness, sweetheart." He said as I punched on his chest weakly in which he chuckled.

"H-how dare you enter a private building?" Devis shouted, holding his nose tightly.

"Private?" Callahan blinked innocently.

"I can sue you for trespassing!" He said.

Callahan grinned. "Why don't you try that now?" He pointed at the land line and invited him to call the security. "I meant, sue me..."

His challenging gaze somehow made Devis worried and he reached the phone while holding his nose with one hand.

"Hello, security! There is a man who has trespassed and entered my office!" He shouted over the phone for a while, "How can you not see a man trespassing!"

He growled in anger as he put down the receiver and dialed another number.

"You need to compose yourself now. People are coming," Callahan whispered as I nodded against his chest. I felt weak and didn't want to leave him as if he was going to make everything alright. I wanted to stay like that because I felt more secure when he wrapped me in his embrace.

I somehow stood straight beside him but right there I wanted to go home and get a good bath and sleep. Or, maybe a hug...

I felt so exhausted.

Callahan put his hand on my head and patted, he said, "You did great."

I felt warmth spreading in my heart and once again my tears came out.

He warned, "Don't cry now or I will be very displeased."

I simply nodded but cried. I had never gone through that kind of experience before mostly because I was surrounded by the protection of my parents. Now I know why my parents were against me living alone.

Devis was on the phone shouting at someone and soon the door behind us opened.

Two security guards, the receptionist and Mr Denver entered. Devis looked at them and growled, "This man had trespassed and entered my building yet none of you have seen him!"

Mr Denver looked at me and then to Devis and he asked, "What happened to your nose, sir?"

Devis couldn't say a word as he stood there finding some excuses when Callahan said, "Oh! Cat got his nose."

Mr Denver nodded and said, "Then we have to look out for this cat then."

"You bet, we do." Callahan smiled which made Devis more furious as Mr Denver or others didn't move from their position even if he clearly ordered them to take the trespasser out.

"What are you looking at?" He fumed in anger, "Take him out of the building!"

"Err... But Mr Devis," the receptionist said, "How can we do that to our boss?"

Devis looked at them with a puzzled face and his anger evaporated immediately. "What do you mean? Just get him out of here!"

"Mr Denver, do as he says." Callahan said with a grin playing on his face, "Throw the trespasser out."

Mr Denver sighed but ordered the guards, "Gentlemen, please get Mr Anderson out of here."

Both me and Devis looked at Mr Denver as if he had gotten another head on his shoulder.

"How dare you...!" Devis growled at Mr Denver, "This is my building. How dare you order the guards to get me out of here? Do you want to get fired?!"

Callahan asked, "And who will fire him, you?"

"I am the owner's son of this company! You dare disrespect me on my own ground."

Callahan sighed. "Unfortunately, that ground of yours is going to perish in a moment."

All this while my gaze moved between Callahan to Devis and Devis to Mr Denver. What were they talking about? It seemed the guards and the receptionist weren't as confused as Devis and I were.

I looked at Callahan and somehow felt he must have done something otherwise he wouldn't be here. My suspicious gaze fell on Callahan. Then I realized Callahan was here in the office in his suit. I had never seen him in a suit before other than when he came to meet my parents. He had always worn either t-shirts or shirts with a pair of black jeans.

"Just get out of here or I will call the police!" Devis threatened.

Callahan shrugged. "Oh! Please, call them if you want to go back to jail with your father."

Devis was dumbfounded as he looked at him with a blank face and Callahan took the cue. He said, "Your father is bankrupt and as he had been selling properties illegally without paying tax. Government has arrested him and charged him with a penalty money as well as seized every property of your father including this building." Callahan's grin broadened as he added, "As I have enough money to pay all those penalties I have paid everything and what belonged to you and your father, now belongs to me."

Mr Denver nodded. "And he is our new boss. Mr Callahan Diavolus."

A large gap parted my face in half and it wasn't only me. It seemed an even larger gap formed on Devis's face. He looked like a big rock fell on Devis's head and he got the shock of his whole life in just a day.

"Now." In two long strides Callahan reached the shocked entity and towered over him. He looked so intimidating that Devis took a few steps back. With a deadly serious voice Callahan said, "Get out of my office."

The security guards came and dragged him out as I stood there with a blank mind, unable to process anything.

Mr Denver suggested, "Why don't I introduce our staff to our new boss?"

Callahan nodded as he went to the door but didn't leave the room. He stood by it as Mr Denver announced to all the staff their new boss while Callahan gave them a very encouraging speech before telling all of them to go back to their work.

I still stood there processing the situation.

As soon as Callahan's introduction was finished, he came to the room and closed the door behind him.

"You-you bought the whole property of the Anderson's?"

"Yes, of course." Callahan nodded enthusiastically and added, "Since both of them had been doing illegal activities already. I thought, why not send them behind the bar?"

I furrowed my brows as I tried to register the whole situation. If he had known all of these, why didn't he do it before? Why today out of all other days? And most importantly, he was a devil. Devils don't give justice in the human world.

"True. I don't." Callahan said while leaning against the table and a faint smirk appeared on his face. "I make them do more injustice so I can give them punishment in hell."

"Then why the change of heart?"

He shrugged but the mischief in his eyes never faded away.

"You-you did all of this." I said.

"I did what?"

Living with Callahan taught me, he doesn't do anything without any reason. If he did something then he ought to have a motive.

"I am impressed..." Callahan gave me a toothy grin and I knew he read my thoughts.

"You knew he was about to molest me yet you didn't come." Realization dawned on me, "You-you provoked him to do that to me..."

Now the ground beneath me shook as my body froze. I felt hurt. He used me. Moreover he used Devis to play with me. I clenched my jaws.

"Oh I didn't use you." Callahan said matter-of-factly, "But I did provoke him."

My belly knotted into a tight knot. "You're going to use everyone around me to play with me. I am not a plaything!"

Callahan's playful demeanor had gone and now he looked at me with a pair of deadly hollow eyes. I would have been scared but I was so angry that I didn't care. "Why would you do that to me? Why?"

"I didn't play with you, Carson." He said through gritted teeth.

"Then what is this? You provoked a man to molest me?!"

He stood up and slammed me on the desk as he hovered over me. "I can't provoke if the person doesn't have that desire in his heart." His voice raised and it was dark that my inside howled with fear.

But I was sad because I felt secure when I saw him yet he was manipulating my life the moment he had entered it. I was too naive to feel safe around him. But what frightened me more was that I didn't know why I felt this way.

Tears ran down on my face as I asked, "Why would you do this? Does this make you happy to play with me?"

I was scared when Devis tried to make a move on me. I felt some hungry wolf was about to devour me and I felt so helpless.

His angry face didn't subsided, instead he got more angry as he stood straight and said, "He had already started his move on you and he had his eyes on you since the day you started working here. He didn't do anything because he was waiting for the right moment and you had never looked at him that way."

I sniffed while lying on the desk while my feet touched the ground.

"He was going to do that sooner or later. Imagine if I wasn't here." His voice hissed, "Imagine if you were alone."

I shuddered at the thought. It was true if he wasn't here then Devis would have ashamed me in front of everyone and had fired me already.

"What would have you done? Crying back to your parents again?" Callahan said with a mocking tone, "For your parent's protection or maybe for Fred's protection?"

I sat up and looked at him angrily. "I would have never gone to him."

"Then it is the first option you would have chosen. You would have ran to your parents like a little naive girl." He said with a harsh tone.

It hurt me the way he said but he wasn't wrong. When Devis made the move, for a moment, I did think of my parents. I looked away avoiding his eyes.

"Carson, it is not a world where you can live without a struggle and it is certainly not a world where you can be naive for the rest of your life." He said, "To be strong you always have to fight back and not run to your parents. Your parents won't always be there to protect you."

His words stuck me in my heart like thorns but he was right.

"You did a great job by showing me that you had guts to protect yourself and be grateful that you had the courage to do so."

I looked at him with wide eyes as he added, "I could have come and saved you but that way you would have started to rely on me. You would have started to look out for me if trouble comes."

Somehow I got his words. He was right. Even though he was a devil, I had started to rely on him for a little.

Callahan's anger faded as it was replaced by a smile. "And I haven't come here to protect you. I have come here to spice up your life."
