Chapter One | In The Beginning

23 Years Later

"Wake up! Oh, my God! It's 2:00 PM Angelica!" Viv screamed as she threw what I assumed to be the third pillow at me, which finally woke me up. I opened one eye and looked up at her, raising an eyebrow.

"Can I help you, ma'am?" I asked, slowly readjusting my position as I grabbed my glasses and shoved them on my face before looking at my phone to see the time. Two in the afternoon, just like she'd said. Great.

"Uh, yeah, by getting ready for tonight," she said, turning and opening my closet, "Do you even have an outfit picked out? What the Hell are all these?" she asked, pulling out a couple of my hoodies and looking at the designs on them, which were both band names. She sighed and threw them over her shoulder for me to catch and continued looking, "Where are your dresses?"

"What's a dress?" I asked, my facial expression stone cold as I looked at her. She seemed to believe my acting and looked genuinely extremely horrified until I cracked up laughing.

"All right, come with me," she said, grabbing my wrist and pulling me with her. I hissed and pulled away before shoving my hands behind my back and following her into her room.

I wouldn't consider myself depressed, but self harm, to me, was a better coping mechanism than drugs, sex, or alcohol—to me at least. It's not even like I did it often... Maybe once a month if even, but these were fresh and I didn't need Viv finding out and threatening to tear down my room to find the blade again. She'd already taken away all of my old pocket knives.

I joined her in her room as she was digging through her closet, looking for dresses I'd assumed.

"So what exactly am I getting ready for?" I asked, anxiety already beginning to kick in. Viv was so outgoing and beautiful and everyone loved her. I had no idea how I ended up with her as my best friend. I was nothing like her. I'd rather spend a night in watching Doctor Who than out among horny girls and even hornier guys.

"Don't you remember?" She asked, pausing her rummaging to look at me as I tapped my temples as if trying to remember something. I hummed in thought.

"No, I don't think I do remember. Care to enlighten me?"

"Ange! You said you'd go clubbing with me," she pouted.

"I certainly don't remember that."

"Come on. You agreed to go clubbing with me last week," I thought about it another moment before remembering.

"You mean when you were shit-faced and the only way to get you to go to bed was to agree with you? Viv, I hardly remember that, how do you?" I asked incredulously.

"I guess some of us are just better than others," she dramatically flipped her hair over her shoulder as she turned to continue her dire search for dresses. I sighed, knowing she was set on this, and when she's set on something, there is no way of getting out of it.

"Okay, so then, where are we going?"

"There's a new club opened nearby. Don't worry Ang, I'll be with you the entire time," she promised, which meant she would not be with me the entire time.

"Yeah, all right. Let me go find the baggiest hoodie ever and then we can go whenever you're ready," I started to turn, but she grabbed my upper arm before I could leave, pulling me back into her room and holding a dress up to my body. She looked it over before grinning and nodding.

"Perfect! Light blue is definitely your color, and it'll go perfect with with my devilish red look," she grinned, holding the dress out for me to take now, "Go put this on," I stood there for a second, overlooking the dress with a face that said must I really. The smile instantly dropped from her face, "Now."

I sighed and took it, turning to get changed in the bathroom. It was a light blue strapless dress with a white bow tied around the waist. It went slightly higher than my knees, and slightly started to frill out at the bottom. I had to admit, it was cute. There was one problem.

I dug through my drawer, pulling out some concealer and a big poofy brush, hiding the new scabs on my wrists. Once I was sure they weren't going to be noticeable I went back to Viv's room. She was just finishing her makeup, and turned to me. Her eyeshadow was a fiery red.

"You look like Josh Dun," I said and she rolled her eyes.

"Don't know who that is and don't really care. You can keep your 21 sirens in your corner and I can keep my dildos in mine," I choked on my saliva at that and started coughing, beating on my chest. Not only did she mispronounce two band names, but the dildos really sent me. She looked at me through the mirror and waited for my coughing spell to be over before continuing as she stood, "Come sit," she pointed to the chair she'd just stood from. I sighed, knowing there was no way I would get out of makeup. I didn't dislike makeup, but I was more of a natural makeup person and Viv was more of a caked up clown person. I sat down and before she started anything with makeup, I held up my hand.

"Just make sure it's not too much," I begged. She rolled her eyes.

"Trust me, but first," she pulled my glasses off my face, "Thick framed glasses at a nightclub are not happening, Ange. Do you have contacts?"

"Yeah, but-"

"Perfect. You'll wear those," she folded my glasses neatly and set them down on her vanity.

"They're not the right prescription," I muttered but still put in the contacts.

After about an hour, she finally turned me in the direction of a mirror. My eyes widened as I looked at my reflection. She hadn't actually done too much, but it was enough that I still noticed a big difference in my visage. I smiled a bit as she left to finish getting ready, including putting on her red dress, which was sparkly, a lot tighter than mine, and a lot shorter.

"Okay, now how are we getting to this place?" I asked, looking around for my flats.

"In these," Viv answered, holding up some white heels as she could tell I was looking for shoes.

"Okay, one, that's not what I meant, and two, no," I shook my head. She rolled her eyes and tossed them at me.

"Just put them on, trust me. It's not that bad."

It is that bad. They were the most uncomfortable shoes I'd ever worn whatsoever. I hated them. Why do people torture themselves with these?

"Now he'll be here any minute..." She trailed off, waiting by the door as I spotted my flats on the floor by the counter and grabbed them, throwing them in my purse which only contained my wallet and some gum along with an old photo in it. Needless to say there was plenty of room for some shoes.

"Who?" I questioned, crossing my arms as I started to get self conscious. The only person I ever really trusted was Viv, and if she wasn't with me I'd get anxious.

"My boyfriend. His name is Troy," she said in a dreamy kind of daze; one I'd never seen her in about anyone before.

"You have a boyfriend?" I questioned, wide eyed.

"Well, yeah. I'm a likable enough girl, don't you think?" She shot a glare of daggers at me and I held up my hands in a defensive motion.

"Yeah, of course. I just didn't think you were one for actual relationships."

"I'm not a slut Angel," she rolled her eyes. I sighed.

Hopefully this Troy was good to her. Suddenly there was a knock on the door. Viv immediately ran to get it as I stayed behind, thinking about all that was going to happen tonight...

Welp, here goes nothing.

We all piled into this guy, Troy's, car. He was a very handsome guy, with blond hair, a strong jaw, and beautiful blue eyes. One could almost mistake him for an angel with looks like his. He drove while Viv sat in the passengers side and I in the back. I plugged in headphones to my phone and began listening to music, mainly Cavetown and Ed Sheeran, but had some others mixed along with them.

When we pulled up to the club, I could feel my stomach drop just at the sheer sight of it. We all got out of the car and Viv started to run, dragging Troy, but he stopped her.

"Hold on, babe. I need to meet with someone first," he said, kissing her on the forehead. She nodded and looked at me. I was still standing by the car, staring up at the big lit Letters.

LUX.

"I'll see you inside, Angel," Viv called to me, most likely seeing my fear about going in a place so loud and "exciting". Either that or she just wanted a drink. I took a deep breath as she walked in the place and began making my way to the entrance. I was almost to the door when someone grabbed a hold of my arm, turning me around. There stood Troy. No matter what terrifying thoughts that came into my mind, nothing I was expecting was what I got. The next thing I knew, he put his hand on my forehead and I was inserted into a different dimension. The Silver City, as some would say.

Everything around me was white. I stood outside big pearly gates, and it wasn't hard to figure out where I was. There stood a man, no, an angel, on the outside of the gates. As I got closer I could tell he was familiar, his blond hair and blue eyes.

"Am I dead?" I asked, confused as to why I was here.

"No, you've been assigned a task..." he said. I nodded.

"You know, naturally..." I muttered sarcastically, looking around, "Well, what is it?"

"Your name is Angel Grace. You are an angel, the first of your kind. You were planted on Earth approximately 23 years before the Devil was supposedly leaving Hell. You have been chosen as his Guardian. He will teach you the understandings of how to be an angel, and in return, you will watch over him and make sure no harm comes to the mortals around him because of his actions. The time for you to act is come."

And then everything went blank.

I came to with a gasp, Troy's hand still on my forehead. He dropped it, a stone look on his face as he looked at me as if trying to find out if I understood or not.

"Oh, my- You're an- God's actually- I'm an- What the-"

"Enough rambling. Do you understand your task, Angel Grace?" he cut me off in the middle of my freak. I straightened up and cleared my throat.

"Yes sir."

"Good, then I should get back to Viv-"

"Just one question," I cut him off, to which he raised an eyebrow, "So if I'm supposed to look after the devil do I just go to the pet store and buy a snake and give it an apple or is there more to it?" I asked, mainly just to be funny.

"Do you think you're humorous?" he asked, not amused whatsoever.

"Yes, actually. I think I'm hilarious," I grinned. He rolled his eyes before pushing me against the wall of LUX, leaning in close.

"Do not fail, Angelica. Or you will be replaced."

"Okay, okay. Pushy, pushy. Get off now," I pushed him off of me and he let go easily, "Can I say, I don't think this is a very fair task for a newbie angel like me. I mean, I don't know the first thing about it and now you're trying to get me to watch over a celestial being with God knows how much power and—I'm rambling, aren't I?" Troy sighed, making his way to the doors.

"Figure it out yourself, Angel," I glared and raised my hand to follow after him.

"Wait a second!" Before I could finish getting to him, some invisible force grabbed onto him for me and dragged him back over to me. In fact, it dragged him so forcefully that it flung him straight into his truck. I gasped and covered my mouth in shock, "Did I do that? I'm so sorry!" I called, running over to him as he stood back up and started brushing himself off. He looked up at me as I approached him.

"You really want my advice?" I nodded, "First step of being an angel, learn how to manage your powers before you end up hurting someone," and with that he again walked in the direction of the club.

"How will I know? When I meet Lucifer, that is?" I called after him.

"You can't miss him!" He called back, walking inside and leaving me outside in the dust.

After standing outside in the cold for an extra minute out of the bamboozlement that was this night, I finally made my way inside the place. The music was booming and I was immediately submerged into a giant room with exotic dancers and a balcony with stairs going down into the main area. I squished up my nose, kind of grossed out. I was not a party girl. Never had been and never will be. The closest thing I ever got to it were the costume parties I'd throw for halloween, which I only did for the costumes.

I made my way down the stairs, catching the glare of a dark skinned bar tender lady who was very pretty and even more so unapproachable. I smiled awkwardly at her and turned away, walking to the pretty white couch that was packed with couples making out and such. I squeezed in a spot, trying not to be too close to any of them before looking around for Viv. I saw her dancing on a platform with the man of the hour, Troy the angel boy. I rolled my eyes and, finally, tired of the loud music, put in my earbuds to play the music of my choice.

Couples came and went on the couch with me, some trying to hit on me or start some form of conversation, to which (even if I could) I would point at my earbuds and shout very loudly, "Sorry, I can't hear you. The voices are too loud, gotta drown them out," and that seemed to do the trick as they would all soon look at me like I'm crazy and walk away.

After a while of sitting I got tired of the couch and stood, walking to what I assumed was another room of the club. I quickly discovered my assumption was indeed, incorrect, as I found myself stumbling in an elevator.

"Oh," I said as soon as I realized it was not a room and began to walk out, but tripped as my heels screwed me over and I fell to the side, pressing my hand against anything that would hold me up, which just so happened to be the button to the top floor. I groaned and lifted my legs to take off my heels before noticing that the elevator doors were closing. I tried to catch them but was too late, and soon I was on my way up.

I sighed as I just continued to take off my shoes, assuming I'd just go straight back down, but when the elevator doors opened again, I was captivated by the big room away from all the people and loud music, and found myself stepping through the threshold barefooted. I smiled to myself as I decided I could chill on the couch up here for a bit. Viv wouldn't miss me. Honestly, she'd probably gone off somewhere with Troy by now, knowing her. I smiled and sat down, fluffing a pillow before laying my head on it, laying down and curling up. After all, there was nobody up here.

Or was there?

My thoughts soon changed as I jumped up to the sound of an unfamiliar voice.

"Hello, love."
