Chapter Eleven | Just Friends

There's an old famous saying my mother used to tell me, "If you love someone, set them free, if they come back to you, it was meant to be."

My entire life, I grew up with the mentality that men are scum. Ever since I was five years old when my Dad left, my mom had warned me, "Don't fall for men's tricks, Angel. They're all dogs." It wasn't until she remarried ten years later that even she forgot her old words, but David was no better. At fifteen years old I learned to keep my door locked before I went to sleep out of fear, not of the outside, but the people in my own house. When I decided to move to LA, my mom and step dad almost guilt tripped me into staying.

"You can't leave your mother and I for a career that's never going to take off. You'll be struggling on the streets in no time, and we won't want to hear it when you come crying back because college and acting didn't work out," David had said. But I couldn't stay with them. I was tired of living my life out of fear.

But my first week of college didn't go any better, when I met Jase. If Lucifer, as the Devil, was supposed to be the root of all evil, I couldn't even imagine what Jase was supposed to be. He was my friend before me and Viv even knew much about each other, despite being roommates, and his betrayal had left scars on me I still couldn't talk about some days.

So with that mentality, especially after seeing all the men Viv would bring home, meeting Lucifer was a flip to my reality. He was a player, a womanizer, a sex machine, and yet, so different from all the other men I'd known, and not only in the fact of him being the literal Devil. He was always clear and direct, never tried to hide his true intentions, and for the most part they seemed... Harmless or like good intentions even if he went about them in the wrong kind of ways. I'd be lying if I said watching him throw Joe through a window hadn't scared the absolute shit out of me, but in the end, I knew that I could calm him down, even at that level of anger, and I knew that no matter how he reacted to me and Amenadiel in his house--in his room--me on his bed (if you see where I'm going with this), it couldn't be a bad enough reaction for me to handle.

"Lucifer, we were looking for you," I said, finally hopping off the bed.

"And a lot of looking it seems has been done," he said, gesturing to the bed I was just laying on, "Well, you found me. To what do I owe the pleasure of this visit, brother?" he questioned Amenadiel.

"You know even Maze is noticing a change in you," he responded, crossing his arms over his chest.

"Change? There's been no change. I'm still the Devil you all know and love," Lucifer chuckled, making his way to the closet, "I'm glad you're here though, Angel, I was about to pop by and pick you up for tonight, but the Detective will be here soon and I need to be prepared, but I need your help. Do you think if we made the Detective jealous she'd give in to having sex with me?" he asked, before turning around, a light bulb practically sitting on his head, "No, hold on, I've got it. The perfect plan," I looked to Amenadiel for help, but he was no longer there, then turned back to Lucifer, who was making his way to a mirror, peeling off his blazer before beginning to unbutton his white collared shirt.

"You want to sleep with Chloe?" I asked, feeling a pang of sadness hit my heart. How could I tell him about my feelings if I knew they for sure weren't going to be reciprocated. I mean, I hadn't had much hope to begin with, but now even that sliver was gone.

"Yes, see, I had this amazing epiphone at therapy yesterday. The Detective is the only human who seems capable of turning down my charms and it's been an entirely annoying situation, I mean, she's kicked me out of her house twice now, and that's plain rude," he was explaining, turning back to me with an entirely unbuttoned shirt that showed off his bare chest and abs that was nothing new to me, but I still felt the need to look away or else I'd stare, "So, the Doctor told me I need to take back my control, and what better way to do that than to have sex with her? I mean, it's full proof, and once I've done that things will be back to normal and in rotation once again," he said, making his way over to me, "I don't think jealousy is the way to go, actually. The Detective seems much too prude for that, so here's the plan-"

"Lucifer, I really think you're going about this intention entirely wrong," I cut him off after trying to process his words, "I know you're like, the Devil, and sexy and British and stuff," I noticed a smirk form on his face at my words, "And do not let that go to your head. Not everyone is into that kind of thing. Chloe might like, I don't know, normal people better. Or hell, maybe she's ace, or a closeted lesbian. Sex isn't necessarily the way to "take back control" as you put it," I said. He let out a hum of thought and nodded.

"I see your point," he said.

"So you'll stop with this nonsense plan?" I questioned, sitting back down on the foot of his bed.

"No, not until I have a new one at least. This is the best I've got," he said, turning around and kicking off his shoes. Before I could respond I heard the elevator ding before the doors slid open and somebody walked in. I couldn't see them from my position on the bed as Lucifer slid his pants off, leaving him only in boxer shorts and the unbuttoned shirt.

"Uh... Hello?" I heard Chloe from his other room and looked at Lucifer.

"What the hell are you doing?" I whispered to him.

"Well, seeing as I saw the Detective naked yesterday, I feel I should repay the debt," he explained in a similar hushed tone.

"Uh, Lucifer?" Chloe called again.

"Be a good Angel and stay here for a minute, won't you?" he asked me, peeling off the shirt before finally reaching for the boxers, "Be out in a moment. Just getting ready!" Before he could remove those, I turned around on the bed and faced the headboard so I couldn't see him.

"Okay," I heard Chloe as he leaned over my shoulder so his face was near my ear.

"For the record, you are quite adorable when you're flustered, and I would love to hear more about how sexy and stuff I am later," he whispered before pulling away quickly.

"Uh, did you do what I told you to do and call Carver about the Player's Club?" Chloe asked from the other room. I could tell she was looking around, similar to how I had earlier.

"Make yourself a drink, Detective," Lucifer called, still in the room with me, probably making sure he looked good enough to go out there.

"No. No, no more drinks. No more blurred lines. No more breaking into my house or trying to sleep with me," Oh, God, maybe I needed to be around him more often to keep him from doing those kinds of things.

Or just because you want to be around him?

"Look, this is a professional relationship. I'm a police officer, and you..." she stopped as I heard a gasp in place of whatever else she was going to say. I turned around and noticed Lucifer was no longer in his bedroom with me, meaning she had probably just spotted him. She laughed a bit before continuing, "Are naked. Oh!"

"Speaking of my Surprise visit yesterday, I decided turnabout's fair play. You know, tit for tat sort of thing," he chuckled.

"This is beyond inappropriate," Chloe expressed, and I had to agree.

"And brave, wouldn't you say? Number three on the C.K.C. List: Take risks," Lucifer added. I rolled my eyes at him. I can't believe this was the best plan to him. I heard Chloe clear her throat and some shuffling around the room. I wanted to make my presence known, but I wasn't sure if Lucifer did, or if that was the best plan.

"Okay. Just... Lucifer, put some freakin' clothes on," I heard Chloe.

"All right," Lucifer agreed, seemingly taken aback that, oh wow, a woman doesn't want to just hop on his dick, "But seriously, darling, are you well? The berries are ripe and ready to be harvested. I mean, look at me. Huh?" This was ridiculous. I can't believe I was sitting here listening to this. I finally turned around and stood off the bed, hesitantly making my way to the doorway, a bit wobbly on my feet from all that had happened, "Now, you can't argue with that, can you?" I stayed at the doorway, still a bit afraid to pop out.

"What happened to... My God," Chloe trailed off. I wanted to know what she was talking about.

"Oh, oh. Well, yes, I suppose it is his fault," Lucifer agreed.

"Whose fault?" she asked.

"My father," he explained.

"Your dad did that to you?"

"No, no, no. That's where I cut my wings off."

"What?"

"Well, I didn't. Maze did. I told her to."

"N-No," Chloe sounded like she thought everything Lucifer was saying was wrong, which, from a normal human beings standpoint, it would sound like that, "Seriously. What is tha-" she stopped and I finally poked my head around the doorframe to see Lucifer, fortunately wearing something to cover his lower bits, holding onto Chloe's wrist with an indescribable emotion on both of their faces.

"Don't, please," he said. I felt my heart sink at how broken his voice sounded and shook my head, pulling back away from the door. This was wrong. I shouldn't have been here. This was private and I couldn't get out unless I flew out the window, but you'd be able to see that from the spot they were standing. I was trapped and felt nauseaus. Finally something I wasn't expecting happened.

"Angel, you can come out now, it's okay. I need to get dressed otherwise we'll miss the party," I moved out to the doorway as Lucifer ran past me, stopping to turn at me and the dress I was already in,"Perfect," he said, before continuing.

"Has she--Have you been here the whole time? Actually, it doesn't even matter. Did you make the call, Lucifer?" Chloe asked, a wide range of emotions shooting through her before she got to her question.

"Yes, yes, yes, yes. Party's at LUX. Turns out, the words "Open Bar" are indeed effective, so good on you," he said, continuing his search for a nice outfit for the party while I made my way down to Chloe awkwardly.

"Okay," she nodded, waving at me while I waved back.

"Can't go wearing that scruffy little getup. You'll stick out like a sore cop. Angel, on the other hand, good job wearing something entirely out of your comfort zone. I take it your friend is downstairs?" he asked and I nodded.

"Yeah, Viv's her name, she actually," I looked between him and Chloe before darting back up the stairs to follow him, "She actually wanted to have a word with you. I showed her my... You know?" I said, making flappy gestures with my hands to indicate wings.

"Brilliant, so you want your friend to be seduced?" he asked and I shook my head.

"Don't you dare," I glared at him and he held up his hands in defense.

"Kidding! We have more important things to do tonight," he pulled out a small red dress from his closet, something I had missed when browsing through his clothes earlier, "Fantastic, would you be a dear and give this to the Detective to wear," he handed the dress to me and I obliged without much question. I made my way back out and handed it to Chloe.

"He said he wants you to wear this," I said as she took it.

"This is ridiculous," she muttered to herself, inspecting the skimpy dress before she looked at me, "Are you two...?" she trailed off, "Like is this some kind of weird open...?" she asked, chuckling softly to herself as she lifted her hand to her forehead, "Actually, I-I don't even know that I want to know the answer to that," she said. Finally everything processed in my brain as I looked between Chloe and where Lucifer was getting ready in the other room.

"Oh, oh. Oh, no. No, no, no, no, no. We're," I looked back to the other room, "We're just friends."
