🎼I managed to slip in as the bell rang and blend into the crowd of students as they all hurried to their next classes. I hurried to my locker to collect my books for music class and tried to play it cool. But for once in my entire life, I wasn't in the mood for music class.
I caught my own dad cheating on my mum with his secretary! It was such a cliche. I didn't think those kinds of things really happened, I thought it was just a cheap beginning to every rom-com of this century. Ugh, don't think about that now. Survive the day then go home and tell mum. I can just imagine her heartbroken, sitting on the couch weeping while holding a martini in her hand trying to drink away her problems. Another cliche...
What's more painful? That my dad cheated or that my parents are common?
"Angie, you okay?" I jumped when I heard Henry's voice. I turned to look at him as he gave me a concerned look.
"I'm fine."
He did not look convinced but he didn't push. He was good a that, just being there but not hovering.
"I've got to get to class. I'll see you after school," I said then quickly walked to the music room. On one side of the room it was all cozy with plush old couches, a couple of bean bags, music stands and a whiteboard, then on the other side there was a little stage with a piano. Everyone was already lounging on the couches and bean bags talking amongst themselves and pleasantly enough this time no one took notice of me.
"You're back, I thought the whole point of ditching school is to - you know, go and not come back?" A male voice whispered sending a shiver down my spine. I knew who it was but why the hell was he in my music class.
"Well, what about you? You came back."
"What are you talking about? I never left," he sounded like he was telling the truth but I could feel him smiling. I only turned my head to look at him and I realised how close he was standing. "Who skips school on their first day?" he smirked.
"Class is about to start," I said so I could get away from him.
No matter how good he looked with that smirk, the leather jacket and those warm brown eyes... He was still that jerk that picked on me and Henry. That smirk didn't seem so pretty when I thought about the snake tongue again. That was probably my imagination and yet it imprinted on my mind. I chose to sit in a chair a little separate from the others and Blaz sat next to Marcy. A sweet girl who was in my maths class. He rested his arm around her shoulders and started talking to her causing many blushes and giggles. I wasn't bothered by it I just felt sorry for her. My teacher Mrs Johnson walked in and everyone quieted down while she sat on her wheelie chair. For the rest of the lesson we had a little fun playing instruments, making music that sounded a little off but I just played my part ignoring everyone, and making my own music on the flute. Blaz played the guitar but he didn't seem really into it.
I still couldn't get over that he was in this class, it didn't seem like something like he'd be into. Doesn't this just mess up the bad boy act?
When class was over and everyone rushed to leave but I took my time and hung back. I waited for everyone to go including Mrs Johnson, and Blaz then marched over to the piano. Playing it always made me feel better, helped clear up the mess swarming in my mind. I felt so heavy in my chest as I thought about my parents, wondering how long dad had been with someone else. Thought about my mother and wondered if she had a hint of what was going on? Would she have ignored it? I placed my hands on the piano and tried to think of something to play, since today was officially a dreary day I started playing around, making up my tune. I ended playing a few chords on repeat, dawdling, unable to think ahead or find a better key. I gazed over my shoulder, making sure I was alone and was satisfied that the door was closed and that my teacher didn't seem to care I was in here.
I cursed to myself then picked some pop song about heartbreak that I knew. I started with the intro and kept playing until I got really into it. This was a way to let out some of my frustration, and when I began to sing, it was like the tension weighing in on my chest was spiralling out with my voice. I pulled off my hood and let my hair fall out into waves down my back before grabbing it all to tie it back in a ponytail. I flinched when I heard the door creak open but no one was there. I went over to shut it then tore off my jumper before sitting back down at the piano. I played the song again preparing to belt it out gracelessly. I stiffened sensing the presence of someone in the room. Someone's eyes burning into my back.
"I can smell your fear."
I yelped and jumped whipping around to see an amused Blaz leaning against the wall by the door.
"What are you doing here?" I growled, getting my jumper from the floor. "How long were you standing there?"
"Long enough, you're not bad a little flat on a few high notes but other than that, you're alright." He looked too smug for her liking and bit back a curse.
"You really shouldn't sneak up on other people. Especially when they're upset." I pulled my jumper on and noticed him watching my every movement. Examining me.
"Oh, you are upset? Tell me wants wrong," he said in mock concern.
"Like you care."
"Try me! Come on I'm interested."
"If you must know I caught my dad cheating."
"That's it?" was all he said. That's it? That's it?
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN THAT'S IT!!!!!!!!?" I yelled.
"Everyone cheats. It's not a big deal." I stared at him incredulously.
"Ugh! What was I thinking talking to someone who clearly has no heart."
"Oooh burn!" he mocked.
"Arsehole," I murmured and he laughed at me.
"Pretty little rich girl using bad language? Hot. You almost fooled me there." I stared at him my mouth hanging wide open. I hate that he had this effect on me. I didn't need this. I stormed out the door leaving a laughing moron behind.
~*~
I ran To my locker still fuming from that talk with that moron grabbed an apple from my bag and soon found Lara coming towards me.
"Sorry, I'm late Nicole wanted to talk," Lara said sarcastically.
"It's okay, I know what it's like talking to Nicole the mole," Lara gasped then cracked up. Then she stopped abruptly when she saw the anger in my eyes.
"What's wrong?" she asked.
"I don't want to burden you with my problems," I said taking a bite from my apple.
"What are friends for?" Friends.. we're friends. I smiled at that.
"Well let's go watch softball training and I'll tell you along the way."
"Why softball training?"
"My friend Henry is training there I thought we could go and watch." She nodded and we headed outside and I told her everything from me skipping maths to the incident with Blaz and she listened and showed real sympathy. It feels great to talk to an actual female with a brain. She managed to crack a few jokes and cheer me up then we came to the softball field and sat on the ground watching the boys play. Henry is the pitcher and he looks exhausted, so far things have not been too good for his team. The other team are more athletic but are real douchebags. They keep picking on poor Henry and his team.
"Wow he sucks, no offence," Lara said and I whined.
"Maybe he'll be good at hitting the ball instead of catching it," I said and continued watching him as he held the bat over his shoulder. Here we go...
"Might as well call strike three now instead of wasting our time." A guy on third base yelled out.
"Shut up and play!" I yelled out at him but quickly looked at Lara and pretended we were chatting the whole time. However, Lara couldn't stop laughing at me.
"Chicken," She whispered and I slapped her elbow playfully. Before I looked at Henry who smiled at me.
The pitcher threw the ball and Henry swung the bat and hit the ball but not very far. Damn, he's not going to make it. I stood up and took my jumper off. I can't believe I did that and yelled out at the boys on the opposite teams. They took a glance at me and stayed gazing at me. Except for the guy on the last base but Henry was almost home! He ran so fast and that was when the opposing team realised where they were. It was too late for those bullies. Henry made it!
"That's one way to create a distraction." Lara laughed again. Then she started talking about how pathetic boys were and I agreed with her the whole way. I put my jumper back on and slipped my hood up and caught Ronny staring at me in awe. Then I caught Henry looking at me, and far away sitting with his gothic group was Blaz, all of which were staring at me. I never should have taken my jumper off.
