Chapter 5 - A Day With Civilization
It is dark, but William is all to familiar with this. This is yet another vision of one of Asher's memories. This time Asher is resting with someone William may have seen a few times, but he could never remember her name. But in the next moment, fires spread and he could see that she is struggling to break free from fallen debris. From the looks of the inside, it is most likely a church of sorts. William wanted to do something so he quickly rushed to her but before he could reach, a massive gulf of flames went his direction and engulfed him, making him wake up, sweating, jolting up immediately.
His breathing was unstable and it felt like as if he felt the pain. The flames' burning sensation was unbearable but yet it felt like it was recent. He looked out of the window to see that it is morning, and he remembered that he is still in the Council Tower. He got up and stretched his limbs to test if they are still as good as they were yesterday. He felt relieved and he got his detective coat on and he realized something, he needs new change of clothes. He felt dirty and possibly needs a wash or something.
Mumei then entered the room.
Mumei: "Oh you are awake. How are you feeling?"
William: "Could be feeling any better, but I will manage."
Mumei then saw that he was sweating a little so she went up to him. She put her hand on her forehead and felt the sweat, but the subtle heat increase.
William: "Umm... what are you doing?"
Mumei then moved her hand back to her side and came to a conclusion.
Mumei: "You are sweating... You had a nightmare?"
William: "I guess you could say that..."
Mumei: "Well no matter. Today we are going to go for a walk."
William: "And that reason would be..?"
Mumei: "It will be a surprise, just let me know when you are ready. I am going to check on Fauna for the preparations."
William: "Prep-"
Mumei: "Forget I said anything. See ya then."
She then left the room at full speed. This just confused William to many degrees and he just sighs.
William: "What am I getting myself into...?"
He then left the room and went down the stairs that he could see and he enters the Meeting Room. Though it doesn't look somewhat impressive to him but he could tell that this room is where they have their so called 'meetings'. He continued but then he accidentally bumps into someone and he fell to the ground. Yet his pain was stinging, meaning that he bumped into someone head first without him realizing since he was looking around. When he looked up, he saw Sana.
Sana: "Oh dear. Sorry about that."
She quickly helped him up and he slightly rubbed his head.
William: "It is alright... I should just pay attention on where I look."
Sana: "You were that curious about this place that much?"
William: "Yeah. Think of it as entering someone else's home that you don't know that well."
Sana: "Really? This place is not as exciting as you would expect."
William: "Well in the architectural sense when compared to the medieval bricked castles, this is more of a gorgeous place than the others."
Sana's eyes sparkled for a moment.
Sana: "Really!?"
William: "Yeah."
Sana then grabbed his shoulders, being excited to learn more.
Sana: "Can you tell me more!?"
William: "Well I would like to but Mumei had plans for me today..."
Sana then seemed a bit down for a moment but kept her energetic face. She let go and but her arms behind her back.
Sana: "I understand. See you some other time then."
She then walks off, William just sighs and rubs the bridge of his nose. He realizes now that this is going to test his patience all the way because he has a feeling that it is going to be rough. As he was about to walk again, he felt the presence he once felt. It was overwhelming as it was before. From the corner of his right eye, he could see Kronii walking past, glaring at him as she does. He was scared stiff. He gulps and turns around and he couldn't see her anymore, he sighs in relief that he doesn't have to deal with her for a while. Because if he fights her again, he will get his ass beaten again. So he continued through the tower until he manages to reach the bottom entrance.
Once he stepped outside, it felt like he just entered a brand new world yet again. The feeling is just so different that he couldn't even describe how overwhelming or underwhelming the feeling was.
Mumei: "You are out early?"
He turned to see Mumei, her gentle smile and her curious eyes seemed to be alluring for William. This feeling that he couldn't describe himself, but he kept his cool.
William: "Well I thought that I should get out a bit right? After all, you have something pl-"
Before he could finish his sentence, he was then grabbed by the arm and was being dragged by Mumei.
Mumei: "Great! Let's go!"
William is still surprised by her strength alone, he wondered to himself how can someone who looks like an average girl, with feathers on her head and the clothing seeming old, but as he said, average girl be so strong. Looks can be deceiving anyways, but he continued to get dragged along until they got into the forest. She let go and he continued to follow.
The little critters continued their usual business, sending off a tone of calmness. William couldn't help but be curious about this forest.
William: "Hey Mumei.... how is the forest this calm most of the time?"
Mumei: "What do you mean?"
William: "What I mean is that the little critters are able to live peacefully, especially with dangerously large predators about."
Mumei: "Fauna knows how to handle that. But since you asked, I guess you could say that nature acts different compared to civilization. There is a balance between the two, sometimes there is one that is greater than the other, but then the other will overdo the other. So back on Earth, there will be times where civilizations that overtake the nature but when abandoned by humanity, nature takes its course and takes that part back. As I said, there is a balance."
William: "I see...."
Mumei: "You sound so unsure, why is that?"
William: "You see, back then when I was raised by my biological parents.... I did everything they asked and yet I felt like there was no colour."
Mumei: "No colour?"
William: "The other way I could put it is 'bland' or 'empty'."
Mumei: "Oh..."
William: "Although during the time when they kicked me out.... I had to struggle on my own. I know that is how we learn and grow, but it was during a time that the human mind struggles to understand that immediately. So when I encountered particular people, they managed to help me."
Mumei: "You talking about the Myths?"
William: "They Myths? Is that what you all call them?"
Mumei: "Yep."
William: "Makes sense. Since they are originally if you go by normal human studies, mythologies."
They kept walking through the forest until they came upon a ruin. And William realized that this was the ruin he was resting at to get his strength back. He chose to not say anything so he could learn about this place.
William: "Is this it?"
Mumei: "Yes it is. Let's head right in. I promise you it will be worth it."
William raised an eyebrow mainly because he is just curious on how much worth it will be in the first place. They entered through the massive concrete doors, which they had to squeeze through. Mumei ended up falling over after getting through but William managed to get through without tripping, but accidentally trips over Mumei.
It was dark since there was no other light besides from outside. But as they both stood up again, the torches lit up, revealing a long hallway, filled with pillars and glyphs on each wall.
William: "What is all this?"
Mumei: "The history of Earth, all told in one place."
Mumei then led the way while William followed behind. The more they walked in, the greater the detail. He saw many distinctions that derive from old civilizations that used to exist and judging by how they are sorted, it is telling a story of each one that used to exist before their downfalls.
William: "Do these tell stories?"
Mumei: "Stories? Of course, it is how I keep track of everything here."
William: "Is it because you forget a lot or something?"
Mumei: "Ummm..... You could say that."
Mumei seemed embarrassed after that, and William felt bad for asking but she returned to her energetic self very quickly. So it would mean that she forgave him already. Once they reached the end of the hallway, the large concreate doors that resided there opened. When the bright light that blinded William for a moment dissipated, he could see within the centre of a large room that could have been seen as a Greek political meeting place, was a crystal ball that floats above a strange flow of energy that is bright blue mixed with partial bits of green.
Mumei: "Welcome to my looking glass."
William: "Looking glass?"
Mumei: "Since it is my duty as the Guardian of Civilization, I need some way to keep an eye on everyone. So this is where I do it."
Mumei and William walk to the centre where the crystal ball is. Though it looked so shiny where he could see his own reflection.
William: "How does this work?"
Mumei: "Allow me to show you."
She smiled and put her hands on the crystal ball, then it began to glow a blend of colours that vary between the colours of the rainbow. But then projections start to appear around them, projections of other planets and stars that flow amongst the cosmos. In front of them, was Earth.
Mumei: "This is a map you could say, but I can keep an eye on people to learn something new all the time."
William: "Although you are oblivious to how we humans communicate?"
Mumei: "That I cannot explain."
William: "I understand. We all have our flaws."
Mumei: "But what does that have to do with me? I am the Guardian of Civilization and I make mistakes because I forget. If I cannot be their Guardian, then what am I?"
William sighs and speaks in a calm tone to at least get her attention for what he is about to say now.
William: "I am not the type to give others' advice. But take this from me, from my experience. We humans do things so we can achieve great things to make ourselves feel better. We tend to forget as well because our minds block things that we deem unnecessary at the time. And with age, we humans forget a lot of things. You being our Guardian, I can imagine how old you are at this point."
Mumei: "Don't mention it please."
Mumei looks down to the side, showing that she doesn't want to be reminded of her age.
William: "Right. Sorry. But the point is, everything as a flaw, there is no such thing as perfection. Perfection is just a concept that many cannot reach because we don't understand it truly."
Mumei looked at William with teary eyes. Mumei thought to herself that this human, he is one of many that existed under her care and has this kind and caring nature even when he has been through so much. Whether to her that he is human or not, she is the sole reason he exists today. In some way, she feels proud but yet, she feels something different as well. She immediately left the crystal ball and went to hug William. Upon their hug, the crystal ball calls all the projections into the ball itself, dissipating the spell used for it.
Mumei's eyes water up fully and finally the tears fall. Her face tucked into his shoulder.
Mumei: "Thank you William, you have no idea how much I needed to hear something like that..."
William smiles, knowing that he did his good deed for the day and returned the hug. Once they let go, William noticed that her tears were still flowing. But he instinctively went to wipe the tears away and he never understood why he had this feeling, but he did it anyway.
William: "Thank you for showing this to me Mumei. I suppose we all have our struggles. Can you tell me about the other members perhaps?"
Mumei: "Why do you need to know?"
William: "What I mean is.... I know you are the Guardian of Civilization. Sana is the Speaker of Space. And Fauna is the Keeper of Nature. But who are the other two exactly?"
Mumei: "Well... Bae is the pure concept of Chaos while Kronii is the Warden of Time. Though every single one of us has a purpose, we always have to stick to our tasks. Never able to take a full on break. Because if any of us do, the balance will be shifted and everything will...."
Mumei stopped for a moment, seeming as if she went blank. William blinked a few times, even waving his hand in front of her face, though she didn't react. This confused him to no end so he snapped his fingers to see if that worked, and surely enough it worked.
William: "You alright Mumei?"
Mumei: "Y-Yeah I am. I just spaced out for a second. Umm... what were we talking about?"
William was thinking that maybe it would be better to learn from the others since he will hang out with the rest. But he knows that he might not get on all their good sides so it is better to just distance from the ones who will basically want him dead.
William: "Nothing. Whatever it was, I will learn myself, don't worry."
They both smile at each other, which then he suddenly has a headache, which sends him down to one knee.
Mumei: "William!"
The headache was painful to the point where everything else couldn't be heard. The ringing rose in sound and he eventually heard noises.
???: "Asher!"
???: "Herra!"
The voices continue to shout those two names, but yet he gets separate visions in the form of images of two figures hanging out together. Then an image of the two being separated. Then suddenly of the female figure dead in the male figure's arms. But Mumei manages to snap William out of it.
Mumei: "William! You alright!?"
William then stood up, with the assistance of Mumei. He shook his head for a moment.
William: "Sorry... I just am getting strange... visions you could say."
Mumei: "Visions?"
William: "It is of no concern for now. Don't worry about that. You may be my Guardian, but you don't need to fret over that. It is something I need to handle on my own."
Mumei: "Are you sure? I think I should get you back to the tower so you could rest."
William: "Now that I think about it... Yeah, you're right."
They both smile at each other again and Mumei assists in getting William back to the tower. Later on when it is night time, after setting William in bed, Mumei left the room to head downstairs, but she was then stopped by Kronii.
Kronii: "Mumei."
Mumei: "Yes Kronii?"
Kronii: "I still consider having this human around a bad idea."
Mumei: "But you caused this to happen. Is it wrong to do my job now?"
Kronii then puts some thought into it and finally gets it, but she still sees William as a threat.
Kronii: "Fine. But if he gets out of line, I will put him down."
Kronii then walks away. Mumei was saddened by her friend's harsh tone, the fact that she was being merciless about a human who has only been good to them so far. But she knows that it is Fauna's turn to keep an eye on him during the next day.....
