The tension in the air has been so evident that I feel like choking on it right now. Well, this could have been worse if either Derek or I were naked right now but I'm thankful that we're not.
"I'm sure you both got no explanations but," Mrs. McCall pauses for a second and then points at me, "You! Yes, I want you out of my house within next five minutes and I would really appreciate you not coming back here." She says in a straight yet slithering tone and I grit my teeth together.
I nod, biting back the words on my tongue before collecting my purse. My eyes flicker to Derek and I can tell that he's raging from anger as he keeps his fist tight in his lap. I give him a small assuring smile, a sign for him to keep it together. To be honest, I would love for him to cause a scene for my entertainment but I know he already has a lot of Mommy-Daddy issues.
When I pass his mother, she passes me a killer gaze but I smirk nonetheless, causing her a shocking look.
"Well, did you pay her in advance?" I hear her words and it takes me a moment to make sense out of what she's saying.
That's fucking it! I don't move further as I turn around to face her and she's having a hateful look on her face.
"What the fuck do you mean by that?" I blare, despite the fact I know exactly what she meant.
"Oh, you know, your charge for what you do to earn money?" She raises a challenging eyebrow and I feel myself tensing at her words.
I know what she meant from the beginning but hearing her say it makes my blood boil. My feet move on their own as I take a threatening step towards her, "You better take that back, Mrs. McCall."
She crosses her arms across her chest as she gives me a smug look, "Well, did I say something wrong dear?"
"Mom, don't!" I hear Aaron say and that's when I realize his grip on my wrist.
I give him a look that clearly says 'don't test my patience' but then he loosens the grip on my wrist and slips down his fingers to meet mine, giving my hand a slight squeeze as he holds it in a light embrace. I stare at him with pure bewilderment as he comes to stand between his mother and I.
"Please go and wait for me outside? I'll be there in a minute." He says in a pleading tone and his eyes are almost the dark shade of blue.
"Aaron, she accused me of something!" I jerk my hand away from him and he stares at me.
"I know and I'm sorry for my mother's false accusations but Diana, please! Just give me a minute here," he pleads again and I nod.
I start to leave but not before mouthing 'fuck you' to his mother and that immediately makes Derek chuckle in his seat as his gaze is fixed on me. He gives me an apologising look and I walk out of the door.
Just when I'm about to leave their porch and look for a taxi, I hear a yelling voice that immediately makes me move closer to the door. It's ajar which lets me hear everything perfectly fine.
"What was that about, Mom?"
Does that voice belong to Derek or Aaron? I can't quite make out.
"Well, if you keep bringing home sluts everyday, I've to find ways to shoo them away." I hear her snap.
Okay, that was Derek.
"You should probably mind your own damn business like you have been since past twenty one years, leave me the fuck alone!" Derek's voice looms over and I sigh.
What's Lizzy still doing inside though, is she used to the sight of their family drama?
"Mom, I cannot blame Derek's anger this time. You have no right to accuse someone innocent for things like that!" Aaron speaks in between and I immediately frown.
Does he sound upset and angry?
"Aaron, do you hear yourself? That girl isn't innocent. I have caught your brother and her enough times and there was one time I tried to be polite to her and she spat on my face that I didn't raise my child right enough for him to have a permanent girlfriend so I shouldn't mistake her for one."
I bite back a laugh at the memory of that day. She caught me making out with Derek second time and that was when I told her that I wasn't his girlfriend.
No wonder she hates me.
"Mom, I understand that you don't like her and I'm sure she hasn't given you many reasons to do otherwise but you just practically called her a whore, that's so wrong!"
I can picture him running a hand through his hair and I cannot hear Derek's voice that means that he left the room already.
Well, that's my cue to leave as well. I walk for a while before I take a taxi for the restaurant where I last parked my car. When I reach my car, I immediately get in and drive back to my apartment. The whole way there, I get calls from both Aaron and Derek but I don't bother answering to either of them.
The rest of my day passes in a blur as I for once, clean my apartment. Ella and Connor come over sometime in between to hang out with me as we watch reruns of F.R.I.E.N.D.S.
It's five in the evening when the bell rings again and I get up to open the door. I suck in a sharp breath when Aaron is standing on the other side and I quickly step out of the apartment, closing the door behind me.
"What are you doing here?" I ask him through gritted teeth.
He gives me a baffled look and I wait for him to give me an answer, "I came here to make sure that you're okay." He says.
His words surprise me as I give him a look.
"Why would I not be okay?" I question him, crossing my arms in front of me.
"You weren't answering either Derek's or my calls so we were worried. Look, I'm sorry for what my Mom said earlier, she didn't mean any of it -"
I scoff at his words, cutting him off, "Trust me, she meant all of it. It's fine though, I'm pretty much used to such comments so all's okay."
"It shouldn't be like this, Diana." He almost whispers, his eyes staring down in mine.
"What do you mean?"
"You shouldn't be used to such comments and this shouldn't be okay to you, you don't deserve it."
He has some sort of emotions in his voice that I cannot put a finger on but before I can respond to him, Connor steps out of the apartment and frowns at Aaron's presence. His eyes then flicker to me, then again to him and he immediately smiles.
"Hey man!" He gives Aaron a big smile which Aaron returns with a small smile and a nod.
"Is everything okay out here?" Connor finally asks when none of us don't say anything for a while.
"Yes, Connor." I give him a tight lipped smile and he nods.
He turns towards Aaron, putting a hand across his shoulder, "Why don't you come in-", he yelps when his words immediately make him pinch his arm, "Fuck!"
His eyes turn into slits but my glare is strong enough to make him rethink what he was about to do.
"You were saying something, Connor?" I give him the fakest smile, giving him a chance to say the right thing.
"Right! I was telling Aaron to come to the party this weekend at my apartment," he turns towards Aaron to give him a grin that I know he's faking.
"He's not the one to party, remember?" I smirk at them and Aaron frowns at me.
"If you don't want me to be there, all you to do is say." He snaps and now, it's my time to frown.
Why does he always thinks that I'm insulting him?
'Maybe because more than half of the time you are,' my subconscious adds.
"Hey, I was just kidding. Do come and bring your asshole brother along." I tell him and he observes my features before letting out a small smile.
"Okay, I'll be there along with Derek."
"Feel free to bring along your friend, Lizzy I suppose was her name?" Connor adds and my face falls at the sound of her name.
I have no idea why I don't like her, but I just don't.
"Sure." Aaron nods before turning towards me, "I'll leave now, I'm glad to know that you're doing okay." He gives me a genuine smile.
"Thanks for checking up on me." I blurt out before realising how cliché it sounded.
Connor chuckles beside me and I elbow him in the stomach which immediately makes him curse under his breath. I wave at Aaron as he turns towards the lift and immediately look at Connor.
"You're fucking sick, do you even realize what you were about to do?" I slap his shoulder and he backs off.
"I'm sorry, alright? It just completely slipped from my mind." He sounds sincere enough but I just flip my finger at him before going inside the apartment, him following after me.
Being pissed off, I ignore everyone's presence in the living room but then I hear a soft voice calling out for me. My eyes flicker to her gray ones and I give her a soft smile before making my way towards the kitchen.
I make coffee for myself and then I hear the frontdoor opening and then clicking shut. I frown as I step out in the living room and notice the absence.
"What's going on here?" I question and Ella's already looking at me.
"He said he owed you some time alone, come sit here?" She pats on the empty space on couch beside her.
I quietly make my way towards her, sitting with my eyes closed for a moment as I sip on the warm coffee.
"Why did Aaron come?" She asks, sounding curious.
"He was checking up on me." I inform her and she frowns.
"Why? What happened?" She takes ahold of my wrists and eyes me.
"Her mother accused me of being a whore, now you must be wondering how is that new, but when I say 'whore', I mean literally 'whore', as in someone who gets money in exchange of sex." I give out a bitter laugh and her eyes go wide as I hear her gasp.
"How dare she?" She gets up from the couch and slips into her boots.
I frown at her, "Where are you going?"
"To teach that lady a fucking lesson!" She shouts and I smile at her.
"Hey, it's okay. I'm okay, I promise you." I take ahold of her hand and stubbornly make her sit back beside me.
"Diana, who the fuck is she to accuse you of such a thing? Has she looked at her own son?" She blares and I laugh, I'm reminded of my own words which led to this in the first place.
"It doesn't matter Ella, it's okay. It doesn't bother me." I give her a small smile and she wraps her arms around me.
"Oh Diana, I'm so sorry baby! I know it bothers you a lot, you just don't say it out aloud."
I can sense her voice cracking as I hug her back. We stay like that for some time before she moves apart and then looks into my eyes.
"I'm sorry from Connor's side, he genuinely didn't realise it, y'know." She tells me and I stay quiet.
I don't know what to tell her but I nod nonetheless, "Yeah, I know. I just don't like how things are Ella when it comes to this, you out of all people know that."
She nods and gives my hand a reassuring squeeze, as if saying that it will be fine one day and I do want to believe her, but I don't trust my luck.
"You know that Aaron might like you, right?" She says out of nowhere and I laugh.
"Yeah sure, what's not to like in me?" I smirk and she gives me a look.
"I mean it Diana, he came to 'check up on you' because you weren't answering your phone. What does that say about a guy whom you have treated like shit since the day you met?" She air quotes along the way.
Her words make me think for a minute before I arch a questioning eyebrow at her, "You just contradicted yourself babe, why would a guy like me if I have treated him like shit since I met him?"
"You have kissed him twice, for fuck's sake." She retorts and I scowl at her.
She cannot be right, right?
"So?" I argue back.
"Are you even hearing yourself right now? You guys have kissed twice, you work together, he obviously cares for you and you're really beautiful, why is it so surprising that he might be attracted to you?"
"You're crazy!" I laugh as I start making my way towards my room.
"I'm not Diana, just be careful okay? He's not Derek, I don't want you to end up hurting him because you'll feel shit about yourself later on, I know you." She warns and I take in her words.
I nod at her, "Sure." I give her a tight lipped smile before disappearing into my bedroom.
