I lay my head back on my pillow with a thud as I sigh deeply, "What do you want to talk about?"
He doesn't say anything for a while which makes my thoughts to wander on their own and I speak up again, "See, if this is regarding the kiss, Aaron, it didn't mean anything to me and I just did it to prove a point to Derek." I state.
"I didn't call you to discuss whatever shit happened between us, Diana. Honestly, that's just least of my concerns. I called because I wanted to ask why my brother hates me so much when I never did anything wrong to him." He snaps and I blink a few times.
What possible reply can I give to him? Derek has talked to me a lot of times about this; to him, his brother is the sole reason for all the problems in his life. I have tried to explain how his brother isn't responsible for his actions but Derek refuses to see the point.
Why am I bothering myself with their brother drama, again?
"It's late Aaron, I've got work tomorrow. Good night." I say as I hung up on him before turning my phone down to silent.
My morning in the office starts with consumption of strong caffeine to keep my sleep away and mind concentrated on work. As I go through the appointments that Uncle Marcel has for the day, Lucy joins me.
"Hey there, beautiful." She hugs me tightly and I smile awkwardly, trying to grasp some oxygen.
Well, Lucy is an intern who joined last month. She's a grad student but my Uncle being a kind man, likes to believe in paid internship if he finds the quality he's looking for. She has a pretty face, no doubt, her dirty blonde hair falls just below her shoulder, much like mine but she has this high pitched voice that can instantly give you a headache.
When Uncle Marcel enters the office, he passes me a huge smile which I instantly return.
"Lucy, get to the work already, I need you to go through a manuscript today. You have a lot to do!" He tells her and she immediately nods, making her way towards her office.
"How're you doing, Sir?" I ask him with a polite smile which he returns.
"Good, Diana and it feels great to see you here on time and not running late," he says and I nod.
As he makes his way to his office, I go through the files that are making a mess on my table. He has only one meeting for the day and except that, three interviews to take for a vacancy in finance department.
I sigh as I start arranging my desk and attend the calls for another hour before the clock strikes ten and I am interrupted by a charming face.
"Hey, I am here for the interview with Mr. Wilson," says the man standing before my desk in blue button down shirt.
I nod as I ask him to wait for a second so that Uncle Marcel knows about his arrival. I press down the button that directs me to his office and he responds in a second.
"Marcel Wilson on the line," he says and from his tone I can tell he's distracted.
"Sir, one of the candidates for interview is here." I inform him.
"Name, please?"
"Yeah, hold on a second," I say in the speaker as I ask the guy his name.
I should've asked him that earlier! Dammit!
"Steve West." He responds and I nod as I repeat the name in the phone.
"Ask the guy to wait for five and then send him in. And Diana, get me a coffee if you can?" He requests and I smile.
"Sure, Sir."
As I keep the receiver down, I look up at the man who looks in his late twenties. "You'll have to wait for five and when I call your name, you can go in." I give him a professional smile but don't miss the way his eyes not so subtly glance at my cleavage.
I should've been offended, shocked even but I ain't. I have been on this frontdesk from almost half an year and he was probably one of those rare guys who didn't try to flirt with me directly or try to get me in his bed.
He nods before making his way to the empty seats and I get back to checking the mails on our office's mail address, distracting myself. On the daily basis we get more than five hundred mails and sometimes I have the sole responsibility to check them out.
"Hey, it's been ten minutes. How long do I need to wait?" A voice gets me out of my trance and I blink up at him.
"You can go in now, Mr. Wilson's office is on the second left." I tell him, still absent minded and he says something under his breath before leaving for his interview.
There is another tap on the table and I finally minimise the window containing all the stressing mails.
"I have an interview with Mr. Wilson." The girl repeats the same words as Steve few minutes back and I nod.
"Your name, please?"
"Grace Morgan." She says and I don't miss the British Accent lacing her tone.
"I'm sorry Ms. Morgan but your name isn't on the list of people Sir is supposed to interview today," I tell her with a fake smile, trying to keep my annoyed tone away as I get back to looking at the computer's screen.
"You can tell him my name, I'm sure he'll understand and -"
I snap up my eyes at her giving her a cold look, "Look Ms. Morgan, you can take an appointment and come back as soon as you receive back a response but right now, I cannot help you."
"Charlotte Wilson! I'm her best friend. Hope you can help me now?" She smirks at me and the name is enough to form a knot in my stomach.
"Of course." I give her a tight lipped smile.
"She did tell me about you, Diana Rose. She told me you could be stubborn with your profession but she also told me that taking her name can shut you up in seconds." She almost whispers with that smug look on her face and I start taking deep breaths to keep my demeanour cool.
This is my workplace and most of all, Uncle Marcel's office, I cannot slap the bitch and get away with it without creating a scene.
Grace Morgan!
I keep my palm under my chin as I look at her with a mischievous smile and start to speak, "Oh, I'm sure she must've also mentioned the part where she fucked your boyfriend, made him cheat on you just because you couldn't stop rubbing it in her face how your boyfriend was perfect and you both were going to get married soon while she was struggling through her very own relationship drama."
I hear her gasp and that's enough to make me smirk as I get back to typing a response to one of the emails.
"She didn't - she wouldn't do that me!" I see as her bottom lip quivers.
"Oh Darling, of course she didn't," I wink at her as I see the lines of confusion forming on her head, "But you did trust me when I accused her of it, because we both know she's capable of doing it and so is your boyfriend."
I give her an innocent yet a bitchy smile and with that, I get back to my work. I cannot deny her interview with Mr. Wilson but I cannot even let her step all over me and get away with it.
Charlotte and I haven't met in ages and I'm sure she thinks whatever happened in last few years made me more submissive than I already was, but she sure as hell thinks wrong.
Grace goes away and takes a seat in the waiting area while another candidate approaches me, I tell him to wait as well after asking for his name. As I start scrolling through one of my social media pages to distract myself from the ugly images of Charlotte and my teenage years, I'm stuck with the reminder of providing Uncle Marcel his coffee.
All the while cursing under my breath, I make my way to the coffee machine and wait as the cup gets filled. After it's full, I turn around and start walking towards his office and just as I am about to reach my desk, I bump into someone, spilling all the coffee down.
"Are you fucking blind?" I curse out loud enough to catch the attention from people around but I don't care at the moment. Today was supposed to be a good day but it's turning out to be the worst right now.
"I'm sorry, I didn't see you coming." A familiar voice apologises.
"You've got to be fucking kidding me!"
"Diana!" He sounds as shocked as I am.
"What are you doing here?" I ask through gritted teeth.
"I'm here for the interview," Aaron says and that makes me roll my eyes instantly.
"Of course you are!"
It does makes sense, he told me he was doing his major in finance but what doesn't makes sense is why out of all places did he end up here? I take my words back, my day can never go well.
"I spoiled your shirt, looks like you cannot go for the interview now." I try to hide my smile as he looks down to his shirt and instantly frowns.
"I am not missing the chance anyway, doesn't matter about the shirt. It's just a light stain." He shrugs and I try to come up with something.
"It's actually very evident and looks untidy." I say and grab Lucy's hand who's passing by me, "Doesn't it, Lucy?" I glare at her to agree with me.
"What?" She scowls but then notices my eyes on her and immediately clears her throat as she looks him in the eyes, "Oh, I agree with her."
"Yeah?" He cocks an eyebrow as he observes Lucy's features, "Tell me again, what is she talking about?"
Damn, he's smart!
I fake a smile as I start rolling one end of my hair around my finger and look between the stain on his shirt and Lucy, trying to give her a hint.
"Err.. the shirt. I mean, the stain on the shirt." She stutters and I sigh.
"Did anyone ever tell you that you're a terrible liar?" He has this amused smile on his face that is starting to annoy me.
Leaving Lucy and Aaron to themselves, I make my way towards the coffee machine again, telling someone to mop off the spilled one. I quickly get to Uncle Marcel's office and notice that it's Grace who's occupying the seats in front of him. So, the bitch took it upon herself to come to his office after Steve left.
"What happened to your clothes?" Uncle Marcel frowns and I bite my inner cheek as I look down at my white blouse. Fucking great!
"I stumbled into someone clumsy. Here's your coffee though, sorry for being late."
"Aah, it's okay sweetheart. Hope the hot coffee didn't cause you any harm."
"Of course it didn't, Sir." I smile at him and leave his office, without even sparing a single glance to Grace.
I get back to my desk and heave down a deep sigh as I click on the desktop with my head still in my hand.
"You're kidding me, right?" I hear a gasp and I look up to meet those deep blue eyes.
"Surprised?" I smirk.
"Tell me that you do not work here!" He shifts his files in his hand and I smile further.
"Okay Aaron, I do not work here." I tell him, looking straight into his eyes.
"Dammit! You really do work here, no wonder you want me to skip the interview." He runs a hand through his perfectly combed hair which turns into messy in seconds.
"Yup, so the exit is that way." I point towards door and he gives me a small smile.
"Nice try, I ain't going."
"Why not?"
"Because I want the job." He whisper yells at me.
"You won't get it." I pass on an innocent yet a bitchy smile.
"Who are you, Mr. Wilson's daughter?" He scoffs and I stop myself from laughing.
"Something like that." I wink at him and he gapes at me.
"Oh my god! Diana, please don't do anything stupid."
"You still have the chance to leave, Mr. McCall." I tell him in the most professional tone.
"You know what? Do whatever the hell you want, I'm going in for the interview." He passes on a confident smile.
Can this guy get anymore on my nerves than he already has? I take deep breaths to calm myself down but soon Grace makes her appearance out of the interview and walks up to my desk and I literally start feel like either stabbing myself or someone else.
"Well, guess who got the job?" She says in her annoying smile, batting her eye lashes.
I'd rather have Aaron have the place than tolerating her bitchy ass on daily basis but honestly, I'll be blessed if none of them get it.
I ignore her as I look out for Andrew Roger, yet another person who's here for the job. As soon as he catches my eye, I give him a small nod along with a smile, making it clear that he can now go in.
Both Aaron and Grace are looking at me when I glance at them which makes me clear my throat to get their attention off of me.
"Are you guys done staring?" I snap and Aaron looks elsewhere while the bitch just smirks.
"I got the job."
"Did you? I don't remember mailing you the final response and by the way, a person went after you and this guy in front of you, he's still waiting for his chance. Sir would never give you a job without considering other options." I say in my exasperated tone and sigh.
"We'll see." She snaps and thankfully leaves.
"You can wait there and I'll let you know when you can go in." I tell Aaron without even looking at him but when I hear footsteps, I know he heard me.
My phone vibrates on my desk and I immediately pick it up noticing Ella's name on the screen.
"Hey," I say, sounding exhausted.
"Well, another bad day at office?" She asks and I can hear her pity tone.
"When is it ever good?"
"Sometimes it is. Anyway, I called to ask if you want to grab lunch after you know, get free?"
My thoughts go on to wonder whether going out of for lunch is a good idea or not, considering the bad day I'm having, I should probably just go home and sleep the day off but on the bright side, I can make my mood better by hanging out with Ella the entertainer. But before I can give her a response, my office phone starts ringing and I jump with surprise.
"Hey, I gotta go, sorry!" I say quickly and hang up on her before receiving the call and just as I do it, Andrew walks out.
"Diana, I am done with the interviews and I'll be leaving for the meeting in ten, call up Tyler to bring the car?" Uncle Marcel's voice fills the speakers.
His words immediately make me look up at Aaron and our eyes lock for a second before I start speaking again, "Sir, Mr. Aaron McCall is still waiting for his interview."
Why did I just say that? Fuck!
"Actually, you know what Sir? I'll just call up Tyler." I say quickly and put the phone down.
I hang up on him and dial Tyler's number, informing him that Uncle wants to leave in another ten minutes. The meeting doesn't starts for another hour but I'm sure Uncle Marcel wants to grab lunch with his wife and then go. Earlier it was supposed to happen at our own office until the dealers on the other end wished him to visit and he agreed.
"Hey, can I go in now?" Aaron asks and I try to look busy.
"No, Sir is leaving for his meeting."
"What? Diana, I've been waiting here like a fool, you cannot do that to me." His voice is pleading and my eyes shoot up to him.
"Actually, I didn't do anything Aaron. It was all Grace Morgan. Sir was supposed to take three interviews, he did. You're the one left now, I'm sorry but I cannot help it."
I actually can if I tell Uncle that Aaron has been waiting but why would I? I don't think he's capable of getting the job but even with those slightest chance, he does get it, my office life will be doomed forever if I have to see his face every morning.
"You told me that you know him, convince him to take the interview. This is important to me, Diana, please." He begs and I sigh.
Fuck this!
"Fine!" I snap before picking up the receiver to dial Uncle's office but as soon as I do that, he himself steps out.
Aaron turns around as he notices another person's presence and I see as he starts fixing his shirt, a nervous habit many people have and it makes me smile a little. Uncle Marcel passes me a grin and I immediately shoot up from my seat to talk to him.
"Sir, can I please have a word with you?"
He frowns at my words but makes his way to me anyway, "Yes, what is it?"
I bite my lip as I look him in the eye and he scowls further as his eyes shift to Aaron.
"Who are you, gentleman?" He asks politely and I mentally slap myself.
"Uncle - I mean, Sir! He's here for the interview, one of the three people who were supposed to be interviewed today. I am sorry I didn't tell you earlier."
He eyes Aaron before looking at me, "But I already interviewed three people, right?"
"Yes, you did. But, Grace Morgan wasn't in the scheduled list. She's friend with Charlotte so she just showed up today with her reference and you know how I couldn't deny her." I tell him, hoping he would understand.
"Oh, Charlotte and her friends! I never get used to it, anyway, I'm running late for the meeting and I think I already found the right person for the job." He gives Aaron an apologetic smile and I see as his face immediately drops which leads me to speak.
"Uncle, can you spare him fifteen minutes? He's actually a friend."
At that, he puckers an eyebrow, "A friend? Since when do Diana has friends who actually are capable of jobs in my publishing house?"
Thank you for making this less awkward for me Uncle, I really appreciate it!
"A friend of mine knows him, that's what I meant. Now, fifteen minutes, please?" I give him my best innocent face and he chuckles.
"Fine, sweetheart. You don't have to make that sweet face to get your way through it." He pats my head lightly and then turns to Aaron, "My office, now!"
Aaron gives a quick nod to him and passes on a thankful smile to me before following him in the office. I get back to my desk and start doing some work to be productive. When the clock strikes one, I start collecting my things to leave.
Just as I sling my bag to my shoulder, both Uncle Marcel and Aaron step out and surprisingly, they are both smiling.
"You leaving, already?" Uncle looks at me and then at the clock.
"Yeah, Lucy will be taking over now." I give him a knowing smile and he nods.
The thing about my work here is, I only work half day and after that, Lucy takes over my position which is why her work is here is double, which gets her double pay. Despite her annoyance, she's a cooperative person and when she got to know that I couldn't give my whole day to office, she decided to work as a receptionist half of the day.
"Your friend here has a lot of knowledge in the field, Diana." He tells me and I give out the best smile I can manage.
"Thank you, Sir. It means a lot that you gave me your time." Aaron passes on a genuine smile and gets another one in return after which he turns to me, "Thanks Diana."
I just give him a small nod and wait for him to leave so that I can talk to Uncle in private. Three of us together make our way to the lift and till the parking area where Aaron goes separate ways and I follow Uncle to his car.
"I need to talk to you."
He smiles, "Yeah, go on?"
"You're not going to give him the job, are you?" I ask with doubt lacing my voice.
Aaron has impressed him and it's crystal clear to me. The reason I asked him to spare fifteen minutes was because Aaron deserved his shot, not because I wanted him to nail the job. That is still off the table.
"Of course, I am. He has the potential, Diana and he's still a student on top of that. Imagine how much beneficial it will be to the company if he graduates and works for us after that as well. It will be good for both us, and him." He tells me with a stern voice and a slight frown on his forehead.
I sigh as I part my lips to speak, "Okay, you can hire him but I need to find another job then. I cannot work under the same roof as that person, Uncle. You know my life outside this office is separated and him being here can mess that up."
He knows it, he has always known it. My professional and social life are two different things I do not mix and Aaron being brother of my drunk fuck-buddy, Derek, will definitely mix both of my alternate lives that I've learned to live.
I've drawn a line in my relationship with Derek. He's my sort-of friend but he's also the person I occasionally sleep with. He has told me his story, I've always known about his annoying brother, I just never met him before and Derek, he has no idea what goes on in my life after I finish partying. He doesn't know about where I work, but now he will, thanks to Aaron!
"I wouldn't do that, Diana. If you want to give resignation letter, do it! I will throw it in the dustbin and forget about it and I will hire Aaron, whether you like it or not. It's my company sweetheart, and trust me, I know how to make it work." He gives me a sad smile before keeping his hand on my shoulder and then he turns around, walking away to his car.
"You know what? Give him the job, I ain't calling him to tell him that. I quit my own job, Lucy can handle it I'm sure." I shout behind him and just see a shake of his head before he gets in and Tyler drives away.
I curse out loudly before walking to my own car and slamming the door shut before making my way out of the parking lot.
Fuck you, Aaron McCall!
