// fifteen //
Monday morning arrives earlier than I expected it to. On the Saturday night, after having dinner with Ella and Connor, I decided to crash their place as I needed some distraction from the assumptions of consequences now that Charlotte is back. To be honest, most people would assume that I'm a bitch enough to handle her, but even a bitch has fears she's afraid to face. She holds nothing above me, except that she knows details about my life and the people I love, that I would never want her to know if it were my choice. But apparently, Aunty Shelly made that choice for me. Yes, I want to be mad at her, but I cannot be. In a way, I owe her my entire existence since I wouldn't have this life today if it weren't for her husband and I totally understand that no mother wants to hide things from her daughter for another person. Especially if the said person is a burden in your life.
"Where are you lost?" Lucy nudges her sides with me while I wait for my chance to get the coffee.
"Nowhere, just wondering. How are you?" I quickly ask, changing the topic.
People like Lucy make me realize that no matter how annoying I think they are, if they become a part of my daily life, I make enough peace with them so that I can tolerate their existence around me. For sure, I find Lucy extremely nosy and her high pitched voice gets on my nerves every fucking time she opens that mouth of hers but she's my colleague and I owe her a lot for taking over half of my shifts.
"I'm great, you?"
"Fine," I respond, grumpily.
I don't bother to pay attention to the rest of the conversation as she tries to get my attention. After filling my cup of coffee, I make my way to the front desk and turn on the computer. I go through Uncle Marcel's schedule for the day and then fax it to his office. This way, he knows that I'm not interested to talk to him unless it's extremely urgent. Well, I purposely came late to office this morning so I didn't have to run into him or greet him in any manner.
"Why have you been frowning since the moment you stepped into this office?" A familiar voice wonders and I scoff as I finally look up from the computer screen.
Aaron stands in front of me in his white button down and dark jeans. "Well, someone's been trying to figure out what happened between two annoying brothers that neither of them are willing to share it." I taunt him with a pout and he gives out a small smile.
"He didn't tell you, huh?" He looks amused and I scowl at him.
"No, he didn't. Now, will you do the honor or should I just delete both of your contacts and forget that you guys ever existed in my life?"
To be honest, I asked Derek only once when I called him yesterday when my curiosity got the best of me. He promised to tell it to me when we met in person but he didn't sound so promising after all. So, I need to get it out of Aaron. The only reason I'm interested in their business is because it's a big distraction for me from my problems.
As if on cue, Uncle Marcel makes his way to my desk as he stands beside Aaron who immediately greets him.
"Good morning, Sir." He smiles at him and just gets a nod in return.
Uncle Marcel turns his attention towards me and slams a paper down on my desk which grabs people's attention but one look from the boss, and everyone looks away. Even Aaron is about to leave until I glare at him to make sure he doesn't moves from his place. He frowns in confusion but stays put nonetheless. Well, Uncle wouldn't make a scene in front of him.
"What is this, Ms. Rose?" Uncle asks as I pick up the paper and realize it's the schedule I faxed him.
"It's your schedule for today, Sir. Did I mention any wrong meeting?" I ask, genuinely confused.
"No, the real problem is, why did you fax it to me? You have been provided with a phone for a reason and more than that, you could have simply printed it and brought it to my office. Do you know how many fax I get, Diana? What if this one would have gone unnoticed?" He sounds mad but I'm going to stand my ground no matter what.
"Well, I would have mailed you or asked Lucy to remind you." I shrug and he sighs.
He has been ignoring Aaron's presence by his side and I wonder if I really did mess up.
"What's wrong, Diana? I thought everything was okay. Why are you upset?" He finally questions, sounding sincerely concerned.
"Everything is never okay when it comes to me, Mr. Wilson. I thought you knew that by now but I don't think we should have this conversation right now." I look at Aaron whose eyes are fixed on me and Uncle finally notices his presence.
"Can you leave us alone for a while, Mr. McCall?"
It's more of an order than a request and just as Aaron is about to leave, I speak up, "No, he cannot. I have few things to discuss with him and it's important." I make up a silly excuse at which both the men standing in front of my desk glare back at me.
Uncle Marcel takes a deep breath as he pinches the tip of his nose and finally looks at me, "Fine, we're having dinner tonight. I've made reservations already, I want you there and it's not a request."
No, no, no! I'm not having dinner with them. Just as he turns around to leave I try to make some kind of excuse in my mind and then my eyes fall on Aaron who has been standing there quietly since last ten minutes.
"I can't come, I have a date tonight." I blurt.
Aaron scowls at my words and Uncle Marcel seems genuinely curious as he asks, "Really? Who are you going out with on a Monday night?" He questions and I take a deep breath.
"With Aaron." I say without thinking at which I earn a shocked expression from Aaron which is immediately followed by a glare.
"Is that right, gentleman?" Uncle Marcel asks him to which he starts stuttering and I mentally slap myself for taking this idiot's name.
"Er.. yes, Mr. Wilson." He finally responds when I wouldn't stop glaring at him.
"Alright, I'll see the two of you tonight." Mr. Wilson speaks and my jaw almost drops.
"What?" I finally stand up from my chair, completely baffled.
"Aaron can join us at the dinner and then the two of you can leave early to continue your date. See you both at seven." He explains, "Wear a suit." He tells Aaron before leaving and I just stare at his retreating figure.
"Please tell me that just didn't happen!" Aaron finally speaks and I shake my head before taking a seat.
I need water! Fuck! I gulp down the entire glass by my side and then look up at Aaron who has been glaring at me the whole time.
"What?" I finally snap to which I earn another look.
"What did you just do?"
I can tell he's trying not to freak out, but he should be thankful that I'm not losing my temper right now. The only reason I mentioned any kind of date with anyone was because I wanted to bail at this shitty dinner but now that Uncle Marcel has made his orders clear, there's no going out.
"Listen, there's nothing for you to worry about. I'll just show up there alone and tell him the truth about how I just made up an excuse." I say, not sounding sure myself.
He notices how my voice falters and sighs, "You don't have to do that alone, I'll come with you. Although, I don't promise to 'continue' our date." He air quotes and I roll my eyes.
"You don't even have to come, Aaron." I tell him, meaning it.
This is my mess, no one should be dragged into it.
"I'll pick you up at six, don't make me wait." He says with confidence before walking off just like Uncle Marcel did few minutes ago.
I stare at his back before he's out of my sight and then start rubbing my temples. Why couldn't I just agree to the damn dinner? Accompanying the whole Wilson Family would be awkward enough and now Aaron will be there as well.
Why do I keep making my life shittier myself?
I leave office as soon as the clock struck two and the rest of my day passes in a blink of an eye. I call Ella to come by my apartment at five and like always, she's on time. She leaves just fifteen minutes later after helping me pick up a dress and wishing me luck, but I don't mind as long as she's helping.
I put on a red dress that hugs each of my curves and reach an inch below mid thigh. It has three quarter of sleeves. I apply little make up but keep my lipstick red, just like my dress. My dirty blonde hair are left loose in its natural waves as I step into my black stilletoes and put my phone in the clutch.
My eyes land on the clock and it's six already. Aaron will be here any minute but I take my time to rearrange my make up and clean the bed a bit. Just as I'm tugging the corner of my bedsheets, the bell rings and I rush out after grabbing my clutch.
I open the apartment door only to reveal a handsome looking Aaron. However annoying I may have found him in the beginning and even now, I could never deny his good looks. His hair for a change are combed back and he's wearing a dark blue suit that make his eyes look even more prominent.
"You look amazing." We both say in unison and I laugh.
"Don't let my compliment get to your head, alright?" I smirk and he nods with a big smile on his face.
"Are you ready to go?" He questions as I let him enter the apartment and I nod.
"Let me just grab the keys, yeah?"
Before he can respond, I make my way into the kitchen where just above the microwave is the key holder and I withdraw the apartment keys from there.
"Do you seriously keep your keys, there?" He laughs and I scoff.
"Yes, is there a problem?" I roll my eyes and he shuts up immediately.
Way to go, Diana! He's here for you, at least try to be nice.
I mentally scold myself before speaking up, "One day I just randomly hung it up there and ever since it's been there." I explain softly and he nods.
We make our way out of the apartment and I quickly lock it behind me before heading to the lift. There's a middle aged woman in the lift already who I'm sure lives on the same floor. When she notices Aaron and I together she gives me a judgy look.
"New guy every week," she mutters under her breath and I immediately frown before turning around to face her.
"Excuse me?" I snap and I'm sure Aaron heard her too since he immediately interweave our fingers together and gives my hand a light squeeze. I appreciate his gesture but I don't take shit from anyone.
"What?" The lady questions, sounding innocent and I scoff.
"I heard what you said. Last time I recall, your husband wasn't complaining being one of the guys who are with me every week." I say with a bitter tone and I notice how Aaron leaves my hand almost as soon as I say those words.
The woman gasps at my words and just as she's about to respond, the lift slides open and I start making my way to the parking without even sparing her another glance.
I reach the parking lot and frown when I realize Aaron wasn't following behind. He appears a minute later and I scowl at him, "Where were you?"
"I was apologising to the poor lady." He snaps at me and I feel my anger burning inside of me.
"Poor lady? The one who almost called me a slut." I yell at him.
Why is he even mad at me? It's not like what I do with my life concerns him.
"Yeah, also the one who's heart you just broke by telling her that you slept with her husband." He shouts back and runs a hand through his hair.
"Aaron, I didn't sleep with her husband! I just said that to teach her a lesson. I don't tolerate bullies who can walk all over me while I just stand there like dumb." I blurt and I notice how he just sighs at my words.
"Are you sure you're not one of those bullies yourself, Diana? Because what you said nonetheless can and will destroy her marriage. You might have even put up a blame on a loyal husband." He says and his words hang on to my non existing heart.
Did I overreact? Yes. Do I regret? I'm not sure but what Aaron says does make sense.
"Fuck, fine!" I take ahold of his hand and make my way back in the building.
"Where are you going?" He questions and I glare at him to stop talking.
Just as we enter the building, I spot the same lady crying herself and screaming at someone on the phone. Ouch! The scene does look bad.
I make my way to her and as soon as she notices my presence, she opens her mouth to say something I'm assuming unpleasant before I shut up her.
"Don't talk and listen to me. I didn't sleep with your husband, I just said that to cause you pain. You judged me too easy and I don't like judgemental people. So, next time you think of passing a comment on someone's character, remember this incident. Now, goodbye."
I say all of that in one breath and notice how Aaron passes me an amused smile on our way back to the parking lot.
"What?" I snap at him.
"You don't really know how to apologise, do you?" He smiles and I roll my eyes.
"I had nothing to apologise about Aaron, she did pass on a judgemental comment first so she should be the one apologising." I say and he shakes his head lightly.
He unlocks his car and just as I'm about to open the door, our hands crash at the door handle.
"Let me." He says and I immediately step back, surprised.
He opens the door for me and I get in, after which he closes it and makes his way to the driver seat. What a gentleman!
"So, you really didn't sleep with her husband, huh?" He questions as pulls out into the city and I sigh.
"I would have said I slept with her son, but I wasn't sure if she had any, or if he was even old enough to have sex with." I tell him with a wink and he laughs.
"You're pure evil, Diana Rose." He shows off his perfect teeth and I smirk back at him.
"Never claimed to be otherwise."
