Chapter Twenty-Three: For Whom The Bell Tolls

Ethan's Pov

Me and the girls were still in Emily's bedroom watching all the videos. We didn't want to miss any of it, hoping we could catch something useful.

However, the next video was of Jenna.

And it was a video I knew too well. A video I didn't want to see.

"Is that Jenna?" Hanna asked.

"You're late" Jenna said.

"Who is she talking to?" Aria asked, confused.

I swallowed a lump in my throat and pressed my lips into a thin line.

The camera moved around and it showed Toby in Jenna's room, looking nervous.

"Toby" Spencer whispered, sitting up straighter and moving closer towards us.

"It's not right" Toby said, his voice filled with nothing but nervousness.

"There's nothing wrong about us, Toby. We're not really related" Jenna said, wrapping her arms around his neck.

It doesn't matter if they're not related, it's still wrong when you're forcing yourself onto someone when they don't want to be with you.

"It'll be so easy for me to convince your daddy and my mommy that you've been forcing yourself on me" Jenna said.

And it'll be so easy for me to strangle you, bitch.

"You have no idea who you're dealing with" Jenna giggled, unbuttoning Toby's shirt and slipping it off.

"Turn it off, now" I sternly said, not wanting to look at this anymore.

Spencer nodded and with that Emily closed the laptop.

My fists were clenched angrily at my side and I had to prevent myself from tracking Jenna down and beating the shit out of her for what she did to Toby.

"Do you realize what these videos are?" Aria asked.

I bit my lip and shook my head, swallowing a lump in my throat.

"They're of us, Ali, Jenna. We're young girls in our bedrooms changing clothes. We're naked!" Aria said, raising her voice.

"Exposed" Spencer said.

"Do you think someone was watching us and getting off on it?" Hanna asked.

"Well, we all know who had a thing for younger girls" I said, my voice filled with nothing but disgust.

"I feel sick" Emily said.

I gently placed my hand on her shoulder, giving her some comfort.

"In some of these, we were just kids" Hanna said.

"Ian's been watching us for years" Aria said.

"And he killed Alison to make sure nobody found out" Spencer said, shaking her head.

I bit my lip to prevent myself from saying something.

As much as I really hate Ian, as much as I despise him with everything I have, I still don't believe that he's A or he killed Alison.

He may have been a pervert, a damn creep, but I doubt he'd kill Alison.

Sure, he'd get angry at her and maybe threaten her, but he's not smart enough to kill her.

But I don't want to say anything because my sister and my friends will get angry and think I'm defending Ian.

"I wish Ali would've told us about these videos" Emily softly said, trying to hold back her tears.

Spencer shook her head and got up from the bed, removing the flashdrive from the laptop.

"You guys, it is not too late to help her. We can use this to prove that Ian killed Alison" Spencer said.

"How are we gonna do that?" Emily asked, confused.

"We start by finding out what Jenna knows" Spencer said.

"Are you on something?" Aria asked, shocked.

"Jenna's at the top of our A list" Hanna said.

"Look, I get it, okay, but she knows that these videos existed. She was looking for them. That's why she hired Caleb to find that key" Spencer explained.

"Spence, how are we ever supposed to believe anything that bitch says?" Hanna angrily asked.

"If that bitch is A then this could be a trap" Emily said.

"You guys, Ian was watching all of us. For all we know, he still is. Spencer's right. We have to try" Aria said.

Spencer nodded, while I just remained silent.

"We've been afraid of her since the Jenna thing. And now we finally have something that she wants. And Alison gave it to us" Spencer said.

The girls all glanced at each other and nodded, determination washing over their eyes.

I hadn't said anything, nor did I look at them.

My mind was on the video of Jenna forcing herself onto Toby.

I was feeling nothing but guilt.

If I had done something before and told the police about what Jenna was doing to Toby, he would've never experienced that.

I could've helped him but I decided to just let Alison handle it instead of taking it into my own hands.

"Ethan, bro, are you ok?" Spencer softly asked.

I snapped out of my thoughts and looked up to see my sister and my friends looking at me in worry.

I debated whether or not I should tell them about the video. I decided I would because they have the right to know.

"I need to tell you guys something. It's something I should've told you before but I didn't know how to tell you" I said.

"What's wrong?" Hanna asked, worried.

I looked at them and took a few deep breaths before opening my mouth to speak.

"I knew about the video of Jenna and Toby. Alison showed it to me that day she returned from her trip" I said.

"What?" the girls asked, looking at me in shock.

"When Alison returned from her trip that summer she told me to stay behind because she wanted to show me something. When you guys left she showed me the video of Jenna and Toby" I explained.

The girls all glanced at each other before looking back at me.

"Ethan, why didn't you tell us this before?" Aria asked.

"I didn't know what I would say. When Alison showed me the video I was shocked and angry. I told her that we should take it to the police to help Toby but she refused. She said that she was taking care of it and told me not to get involved. I protested at first but she continued to tell me that she had it under control. As stupid as it was, I believed her and let her take care of it" I explained.

I sighed and put my head down, looking at my lap.

"If I hadn't been so stupid in believing her, if I had gone behind her back and showed the video to the police, Toby would've been free from Jenna" I whispered.

Tears began to form in my eyes and fell onto my lap.

I squeezed my eyes shut and clenched my fists at my sides.

I felt a pair of arms wrap around me and I looked up to see Spencer and Hanna sitting at both my sides, hugging me tightly.

"Bubs, don't blame yourself, it's not your fault" Hanna softly said.

"But-" I started but Spencer cut me off.

"No, no buts, it's not your fault. Even if you knew about the videos you couldn't have done much" Spencer softly said.

"I could've gone to the police" I argued.

"Ethan, if you had gone to the police they would've questioned where you got it. If you told them that Alison showed it to you they would've questioned her as well" Aria argued back.

"Yeah, you and Ali could've been in trouble" Emily softly said.

"I don't care if I got in trouble, if it meant helping Toby so be it" I argued back.

Spencer frowned and gently wiped my tears with her hands.

"Ethan, bro, don't beat yourself up about it. If any of us were in your position we wouldn't know what to do either" Spencer softly said.

"Yeah, if Ali had told any of us about the video and said she was handling it we would've backed off and let her deal with it" Aria softly said.

Hanna nodded and wrapped her arms around my shoulder, bringing me closer to her side.

"Don't blame yourself. It's not your fault. Also, think about what would've happened if you had taken this to the police. This could've gotten out and imagine how people would've reacted" Hanna said.

Thinking about it just a little, I can somewhat see where she's coming from.

But I still feel guilty about not going to the police.

And the only way I can get rid of this guilt is to tell the truth.

Meaning that I'm going to come clean to Toby. And I just hope he forgives me.

The Next Day

It was the next day and me, my sisters and mom were in the kitchen.

Mom and Melissa were sitting on the stools, reading newspapers. Spencer was making herself a sandwich.

I was eating a muffin and drinking coffee, I'm not sure why but I just love having muffins for breakfast.

My mood died down when Ian walked in with a cup of coffee in his hands.

"Mm. Hey, babe. You, uh, sure you don't want me to give you a ride to the church?" Ian asked, setting his cup down.

"Don't be silly. I can walk from the station, daddy" Melissa smirked.

This made me choke on my muffin in disgust, Spencer patted my back.

"Ok" Ian chuckled.

He walked over to her and gently kissed her on the lips, making her smile as she kissed him back.

When I felt better, I rolled my eyes and gagged in disgust, earning a small snort from Spencer.

"I'll see you later" Ian said.

"Bye" Melissa smiled.

He smiled at her before leaving the house, leaving the rest of us alone.

It was silent for a few seconds before Spencer sighed and looked at Melissa.

"Church?" Spencer asked.

"We're planning the christening" Melissa smiled.

I smiled softly at her while Spencer scoffed and shook her head.

"Isn't that a little premature, you know, if it's not born a human" Spencer said.

This made me look at her with wide eyes in shock. I turned around to see Melissa and mom giving her the same look.

"Spencer" I hissed at her, gently hitting her arm.

"That's not funny" Melissa said, her tone defensive.

"Well, humor's subjective" Spencer chuckled.

But Melissa didn't laugh, she angrily glared at Spencer and sat up.

"No, I know how you feel about Ian, but I honestly thought you'd be happy about this baby" Melissa said.

She shook her head and turned around and walked away, leaving the house.

"That was cruel" Mom said.

"I'm sorry" Spencer sighed.

Mom shook her head and set her newspaper down, getting up and grabbing her cup of coffee.

"Well, it doesn't help to tell me that" Mom said.

She walked over to me and kissed my head before leaving the house.

I sighed and set my cup of coffee down and looked at Spencer.

"I get that you hate Ian, I do too. But you shouldn't hate the baby for the fathers actions" I sternly said.

I threw my muffin out and walked away from her, heading upstairs to get dressed.

At School

Spencer and I entered school together. We were walking in the hallway together and made our way to our lockers.

Before we could even open them we spotted Jenna walking down the hallway.

Me and Spencer looked at each other before we looked at the other girls.

We all nodded and with that we began walking to catch up to Jenna and confront her.

We found her in the music room and walked inside, closing the door behind us.

"Who's there?" Jenna asked.

"It's Spencer" Spencer said.

Jenna didn't say anything she just turned around to face us.

"Who else?" Jenna asked.

"Ethan, Aria, Emily" Spencer said.

She glanced at Hanna and she nodded at her before speaking again.

"And Hanna" Spencer said.

"Should I call security?" Jenna asked.

Hanna scoffed and rolled her eyes while I gently placed my hand on her shoulder.

"We have what you hired Caleb to find" Spencer said.

This made Jenna's jaw drop a bit as I removed my hand from Hanna's shoulder.

"You didn't think it was wrong, but Toby did" Emily angrily said.

"So, you've seen it?" Jenna nervously asked.

"Every frame" Spencer spat at her.

I clenched my fists at my sides, Aria and Hanna grabbed onto my arms, keeping me in place.

Which I was grateful for because my patience was on a thin line.

"What do you want from me?" Jenna asked.

"The truth. Can you handle that?" Hanna sarcastically asked.

Jenna sighed and nodded, agreeing to tell us everything.

I unclenched my fists and looked at Aria and Hanna. I smiled softly at them and nodded, telling them I calmed down and they can let me go.

They nodded and slowly released my arms.

"Look, when I said Alison came to visit me at the hospital I was telling you the truth. She didn't come to talk about you, Spencer. That was a lie" Jenna said.

"And how do we know that you're not lying to us now?" I asked.

"You knew Alison, okay? You knew what she was capable of" Jenna said.

"We're listening" Spencer said.

"It was the day before she went missing, and she was on her way home from Georgia. She had just found the video. She couldn't wait to play it for me" Jenna explained.

She told us that Ali paid her a visit and played the video for her.

She said that she promised to keep the video to herself if she kept their secret and when she agreed she left.

"She was on her way home from Georgia?" Spencer asked.

"Th-that's what she said. And then she made some joke about her...tan. Too bad I couldn't see it" Jenna sighed.

Me and the girls looked at each other before looking back at her.

"Did she tell you anything else?" I asked.

"It was a short visit" Jenna said.

Damn, I thought we'd be able to get more answers, guess not.

"Look, I-I have given you what you've asked for. What are you gonna give me?" Jenna asked.

Another slap to the face for what you did to Toby.

"We'll make sure the video stays in a safe place" Spencer said and the girls nodded.

"Ok" Jenna nodded.

She began walking away and me and the girls moved out of the way so she could get to the door.

But before she could leave she turned back around to look at us.

"We've all made mistakes. Remember, I'm still paying for yours" Jenna said, gesturing to the girls.

I glanced at them and saw them looking at each other in worry.

Jenna sighed before opening the door and leaving. When she was gone me and the girls looked at each other.

"Sick" Emily said.

"For all we know, she wrote that story" Aria scoffed.

"And we still don't know how Ali got the video" Emily said.

"Yes, we do. That video was Alison's insurance policy, and she cashed it in the day that she got it" Spencer said.

"Which means she was with Ian when she found it" Aria said.

"And she couldn't wait to play that video for Jenna" I said.

"God, do you remember how happy Ali was when she came back from that trip?" Spencer asked and we all nodded.

"I think it's because, for her, the Jenna thing was over" I said.

"Nice of her to share the safety net with us" Hanna sarcastically said.

"Wait for it, girls. Wait for it" Emily said, repeating the words Ali said when she returned from her trip.

"Wait for what?" Spencer asked.

"That's what Ali said when we met her at the taxi. Maybe that's what we were waiting for" Emily said.

"Do you remember at Alison's funeral, when we were all wondering why Jenna was there? If she's telling the truth, Jenna came back because she could" I said, realization dawning on me.

"And Ali's the one who got buried" Hanna nodded, catching onto what I was saying.

At Lunch

It was lunch time and me and the girls, minus Spencer, were in the cafeteria eating lunch.

I was so hungry and I was just so glad when lunch came because I just wanted nothing more than to stuff some food in my mouth.

Emily was telling us that her mom was thinking about moving to Texas for a year.

"Well, if you want, my dad can call your mom and officially offer you the guestroom" Aria suggested.

"This is so not fair. I mean, we lost each other for a year. I can't imagine not being-" Hanna started but got cut off by Spencer.

"I got it" Spencer said.

She sat down while setting her bag on top of the table.

"Ok, you're sure Ian can't trace this number back to us?" Aria asked.

"It's a prepaid phone, I used cash, and the number isn't registered, so...service is anonymous" Spencer explained.

I nodded while Hanna looked a bit confused.

"How do you know this stuff?" Hanna asked.

"Don't you ever watch CNN?" Spencer asked.

I laughed slightly at the look on Hanna's face, Spencer sighed and shook her head at her.

"You don't need to answer that" Spencer sighed.

"Homeland security is trying to ban these things" I said and Spencer nodded.

I heard nearby chatting and turned around to see Ian and a few other students talking to each other.

I scoffed and rolled my eyes, gaining the girls attention as they turned to look at him.

"He acts like he doesn't have a care in the world" Aria scoffed.

"He thinks he got away with it" Hanna said.

"Well, he hasn't" Emily said.

Ok, no matter how much I hate Ian, I still don't believe he's Ali's killer.

He may hate my sister and my friends, but he's not that smart and he's not smart to be A.

But no matter what I say my sister and my friends won't listen to me because they're positive that it's Ian.

And I just don't want to say anything because they'll assume I'm defending him, when I'm really not.

"Okay, so we convince Ian that this isn't about anything but money. Hopefully that'll throw him off of us. If he wants his home movies, it's just gonna cost him. And then when he shows up for the swap" Spencer explained.

"We make our own movie" Hanna said, holding her phone in her hand.

I smiled at that while Spencer nodded.

"Right, and we take that, the flash drive, and the prepaid phone into the police" Spencer said.

"The second he responds with a text, we know that he's guilty" Aria said.

Spencer nodded before taking the phone out and began typing in the message.

When she was done she was about to hit send, but she hesitated and I can understand why.

Hanna noticed her hesitation and gently nudged her arm.

"Send it already" Hanna said.

Spencer glanced at her before looking back at the phone and hitting the send button.

When she sent the message we turned around to look at Ian, making sure he got the message.

Finally he seemed to have gotten the message because he took his phone out, and the look on his face said everything.

We all looked away from him and looked at each other, unsure of what to say or do.

"There must've been a part of me that didn't believe it, because I just... I-I feel" Aria stuttered.

"Numb?" Emily asked.

"Somehow I-I thought I'd feel better when we found out for sure" Spencer said.

I nodded and gently placed my hand on her shoulder, hoping to give her comfort.

"Well, I know what they do to guys like him in prison, and that makes me feel a lot better" Hanna said.

I chuckled lightly at that and nodded my head.

We all tensed up when we heard a phone beeping.

We thought it was from Ian, but it was coming from Hanna's phone.

She took it out and looked at it before sighing in slight relief.

"It's just my mom making sure I stayed out of bed" Hanna said before setting her phone down.

We nodded but froze when we heard another phone beeping and this time it was from Ian.

Spencer quickly grabbed the phone and turned it on to see what he wrote.

"He wants to know what we want" Spencer said, looking at all four of us.

We all glanced at each other, unsure of what to write back.

Hanna wasted no time in grabbing the phone from Spencer and began writing a message for him.

When she was done she sent the message and handed it back to Spencer.

"Is this the 'let's love on Hanna' lunch committee?" I heard Mona asked.

I jumped slightly before turning around to see her standing near us.

She smiled at us before taking a seat next to Hanna.

"Feeling better, sweetie?" Mona softly asked.

"I'm sorry, I have this thing that I have to do" Spencer said as she quickly grabbed her stuff and left.

"And then there were five" Mona said.

"I'll help" Aria said, picking her things up and leaving.

"Yeah, me too" Emily said before grabbing her things and following Aria behind.

"And then there were three" Mona said.

"Um, I'm really sorry, Mona, but Spencer has this thing, and she really needs her friends right now" Hanna said.

She grabbed her things before leaving, leaving me and Mona.

"And then there were two" Mona sighed, looking at me.

"Sorry about them, Mona. We're just dealing with things and they're a bit stressed at the moment" I softly said.

"It's fine, I get it. And if you want you can leave too, I don't mind" Mona said.

"No, no don't worry, I'm not leaving. I wouldn't do that to you, I'm not like them" I softly said, reaching out to grab her hand.

She send me a grateful smile and nod, making me smile back at her.

"You mind waiting for me here, I'm just going to grab some yogurt" I said.

"Sure, I'll wait" Mona nodded.

I sent her another smile before getting up and walking away to go get some yogurt.

At Home

After school had finished I called Toby and told him to come over. I was going to tell him everything.

I can't live with this guilt, knowing that if I had done something he wouldn't have suffered this much.

And the only way I can get rid of the guilt is by telling him the truth.

And if he wants nothing to do with me after this, I'll understand.

So right now, we were in my room, sitting on the ground near my bed.

I just finished telling Toby everything and to say things were a bit awkward would be an understatement.

Neither of us said anything, we remained sitting on the ground in silence.

"So...Alison found a video about what Jenna did to me. And she showed it to you" Toby said, turning to look at me.

I swallowed a small lump in my throat and nodded, not having the courage to look at him.

"So, you knew the entire time about what Jenna did to me?" Toby softly asked.

I bit my lip and looked away from him, trying to hold back my tears.

"Yes" I nodded.

He didn't say anything after that, he remained quiet.

"Toby, I just want to say that I'm so sorry. I'm sorry for not doing anything to help you. I should've gone to the police, if I had then maybe you wouldn't have suffered. I'm so sorry and I'll understand if you hate me and never want to see me ag-" I started but got cut off.

My eyes widened in shock when Toby pulled me into a tight hug, resting his head on my shoulder.

I didn't know what to do, but I slowly wrapped my arms around him, hugging him back.

"Uh...I'm confused, why aren't you yelling at me or punching me in the face?" I asked.

"Why would I do that? I'm not mad" Toby softly said.

"You're not?" I asked, still confused.

Toby chuckled an pulled away from the hug as I still looked at him in confusion.

"No, I'm not mad" Toby said.

"But, why aren't you mad? I knew about what Jenna did to you, Ali showed me a video, I could've gone to the police to help you. Why aren't you punching me in the face?" I asked.

"I'm not mad, Ethan. And I would never punch you in the face" Toby said.

"But...why aren't you mad?" I asked.

Toby sighed and gently ran his hand through his hair.

"Because if I'm being honest I don't think I wanted the police knowing about what she did" Toby said.

"What? Why?" I asked, confused.

"Because if the police knew then something like this could've gotten out and everyone would've known what happened. I don't think I would've been able to handle the pity or disgusted looks from those people. Besides, everyone still thinks I killed Alison, I don't want them knowing about what Jenna did to me" Toby explained.

I sighed and frowned at him, I hate Jenna for what she did to him.

I looked at Toby and saw him staring down at his lap, and although I couldn't see his face I can tell he was crying.

I scooted closer to him and wrapped an arm around his shoulders.

"Toby, I'm so sorry. Nobody should ever go through something like that. I promise that I'm not leaving your side. I promise I'll do whatever I can to help you erase the pain and move on from what she did to you. I'm not going anywhere" I softly said.

Toby didn't say anything, he just snuggled closer to my side and buried his head in my shoulder.

I wrapped both arms around him and hugged him closer to my side.

"Thank you" Toby whispered.

"Of course" I whispered back.

Late At Night

It was late at night and me and Spencer had gone to pick up Melissa from the church.

Turns out Ian hadn't shown up and she texted Spencer to pick her up and she told me and I ended up going.

So right now the three of us were sitting in the car. Melissa and Spencer were in the front while I was sitting in the back.

"I talked to him this afternoon. He was taking care of the contractor, then heading straight for the church. Something's wrong, I can feel it" Melissa said, clearly panicking.

She started going through her bag to try and find her phone.

"Calm down, ok" I softly said, reaching over to place my hand on her shoulder.

"Ah, I can't find my phone" Melissa said in frustration.

"Do you want me to call your number?" Spencer asked.

"Damn it! I left it at the church" Melissa groaned in frustration.

I sighed and gently rubbed her shoulder, hoping it would calm her down.

"Melissa, sis, you have to relax" I softly said.

"Yeah, this cannot be good for the baby" Spencer said.

"Spoken like a sister who actually cares" Melissa scoffed.

"I-I care, ok" Spencer stuttered.

"I wish I could believe you. Ethan has been supportive of me and this baby, but you haven't. So I really don't know if I can believe you or not" Melissa said.

I frowned at that and looked at Spencer to see her frowning too.

I can also seem some sadness in her eyes, so I reached over to rub her shoulder with my other hand.

"Do you want me to go back to the church?" Spencer asked.

"Yes" Melissa nodded.

Spencer nodded but before she could even turn the car around and head back to the church we heard screeching noises from nearby.

We turned around and our eyes widened and gasps escaped from our lips when we saw a car speeding towards us.

"Melissa! Spencer!" I yelled.

I quickly undid my seatbelt and lunged forward to shield my sisters with my body, mostly Melissa because she was pregnant.

The car made contact with ours and started spinning around.

Melissa and Spencer's screams filled the inside of the car as the car rolled over. I hugged both of them tighter, wanting to protect them at all cost.

I screamed in pain when I felt my head and arm hit something and before I knew it I blacked out.

At The Park
Nobody's Pov

Aria, Hanna and Emily were already at the park but they were waiting on Spencer and Ethan.

Hanna and Emily were sitting on the bench while Aria was standing with her phone close to her ear.

She was trying to call Spencer and Ethan but neither of them were picking up, so she decided to leave a voicemail.

"Spencer, it's 7:30 and we're at the park. Where are you guys?" Aria asked.

She sighed before hanging up and walking over to the other girls.

"Maybe they're on their way and they just doesn't have a signal" Hanna said.

"I don't know. If they're not here in ten minutes we're calling the cops" Aria said.

Hanna and Emily nodded, worried about what could've happened to their best friends.

At The Hospital

Veronica Hastings entered the hospital and began looking around for either a doctor or one of her children.

She sighed in relief when she saw Spencer sitting on a chair, looking unharmed.

"Oh, Spencer" Veronica said, making her way towards her daughter.

Spencer got up from where she was sitting and looked at her mom.

"She's stable, but they're monitoring the baby" Spencer said.

"Monitoring for what?" Veronica asked in confusion and concern.

"They say it's too early to tell how significant the trauma was" Spencer said.

Veronica sighed before her eyebrows furrowed in confusion when she realized Ethan wasn't with Spencer.

"Spencer, where's your brother? Wasn't he with you girls?" Veronica asked.

Spencer's lips trembled at the mention of her brother and Veronica saw.

"Spencer?" Veronica asked, growing more concerned.

"Ethan undid his seatbelt to shield me and Melissa with his body. But when we hit the other car he hit his head and his arm hit the window. He blacked out and hasn't woken up since" Spencer explained.

Veronica's eyes widened in shock as she covered her mouth.

Her son tried protecting her sisters but got hurt in the end.

A few tears slid down her face as she tried wiping them away before looking at her daughter.

"Are you ok?" Veronica asked.

"The car came out of nowhere" Spencer whimpered, tears streaming down her cheeks.

"Oh, honey, it wasn't your fault" Veronica softly said, pulling her daughter in a hug.

Spencer hugged her mom tightly and hid her face in her shoulder, more tears streaming down her face.

Guilt filled her body knowing that her pregnant sister and her twin brother got hurt.

A Few Hours Later
Ethan's Pov

I'm not sure how long I was out, everything hurt, my body felt like it was on fire.

I can't remember much. The only thing I do remember was trying to protect my sisters before blacking out.

My eyes slowly fluttered open but I quickly closed them due to the bright light.

"Spencer, Melissa" I whispered.

I had to make sure my sisters were ok, I needed to know that they were ok and unharmed.

"Ethan, sweetie, are you awake?" I heard mom ask.

Now this caught my attention as my eyes fully opened.

When my vision was clear enough I realized I was in a hospital room, lying on a hospital bed. An I saw mom sitting on a nearby chair.

"Mom?" I asked.

"Oh, sweetie, you're awake. Thank goodness" Mom sighed in relief.

"What happened? Where's Melissa and Spencer?" I asked.

I tried sitting up, but Mom quickly walked towards me and made me lie back down.

"Easy there, sweetie" Mom softly said.

"Mom, what happened? Why am I here? Where are my sisters?" I asked.

"Calm down, sweetie. Melissa is in her room resting. You and her were the ones that got hurt the most. Spencer is fine so no need to worry about her" Mom explained.

"What? What happened to Melissa? Are her and the baby ok?" I asked.

Don't tell me that me shielding Melissa with my body wasn't enough and something still happened to her and her baby.

"For the most part they're alright" Mom said.

I sighed in slight relief, before realizing my situation.

"Wait, but what about me? What happened?" I asked.

"Spencer told me what you did, trying to shield her and Melissa with your body to save them. You blacked out because of how hard you hit your head. Your also injured your arm during the crash and have to wear a cast" Mom explained.

"For how long?" I asked.

"I'd say a few days, maybe a week" Mom said.

I sighed in slight annoyance at that and laid my head against my pillow.

I yelped in slight pain when mom flicked my forehead.

"Mom, what the hell was that for?" I asked, looking up at her.

"For being such a protective idiot. Sweetie, I understand you were looking out for your sisters, but don't ever do something like that again. Do you understand how I felt when you were hit by that car? I thought I lost you for a second. I don't want to go through something like that again" Mom explained.

Tears streamed down her face as she spoke and I frowned.

I sighed and gently took my hand in hers, rubbing the top of it with my thumb.

"I'm sorry, mom. I didn't mean to scare you. But you have to understand that my sisters are my number on priorities. As well as the other girls. I'll protect them no matter what, I don't care if I get hurt, if it means they remain unharmed then so be it" I explained.

I sighed and looked up at her, small tears streaming down my cheeks.

"I'm sorry I scared you. I can't promise I won't ever do something like that again, but what I will promise is to be a bit more careful" I softly said.

Mom looked down at me and I saw admiration in her eyes.

She sighed and bent down to give my forehead a kiss, gently resting her chin on top of my head.

"What did I do to deserve such an amazing son like you?" Mom asked.

I chuckled lightly at that and shrugged my shoulders before hugging her.

She hugged me back, kissing my forehead one last time before pulling away.

I sighed before realization dawned on me.

"Wait, where's Spencer? If she's unharmed then why isn't she here?" I asked.

"She was here, but she left to head back to the church to find Melissa's phone and find Ian. Hopefully he's there" Mom said.

My eyes widened when I realized the plan me and the girls had.

And if Ian somehow caught onto our plan he's probably got a plan of his own.

I have to get out of here and warn Spencer and the girls.

"I need to go, I need to find Spencer and the girls" I said.

I desperately tried getting out of bed, but mom stopped me by pushing me back onto the bed.

"No, you need to stay in bed and rest" Mom said.

"Mom, something could happen to Spencer, or the girls, and I'm not there to help them. I have to be there for them" I said.

I tried getting up but she kept a firm hold on me, refusing to let me go.

"Ethan, sweetie, you need to think about yourself for once. You were just in a car accident after trying to protect your sisters and now you want to leave to meet up with Spencer and the girls. I'm sorry, but my answer is no" Mom sternly said.

"But mom, they might need my he-" I started but she cut me off.

"Ethan, you need to stop thinking about the girls for once and think about yourself. You were just in a car accident and suffered a bad blow to the head and your arm is now in a cast. You are in no position to leave this room. You need rest and you're not going to leave this room until the doctors say that you can. Do you understand?" Mom sternly asked.

I opened my mouth to try and protest, but mom gave me her famous mother glare, making me cower in slight fear.

I sighed in defeat, knowing that there was no way in hell she would let me leave this room.

"I understand" I said.

"Good, now rest, I'll go get you some food" Mom said.

She kissed my head before turning around and leaving the room.

I sighed in annoyance, wanting nothing more than to leave this stupid hospital room, but I can't.

I just hope Spencer and the girls are alright.
