Chapter Sixty-Nine: Out Of Sight, Out Of Mind

Ethan's Pov

Aria called Emily and told her what happened and told her to come over.

I called Hanna but she didn't answer, so I left her some voicemails and texts, hoping she'd answer them.

Spencer sat on her bed while Aria and I stood around her.

We heard footsteps and we saw Emily walking inside, when she saw Spencer her eyes widened in relief.

"Oh, my God. Are you alright?" Emily asked in concern.

"Yeah" Spencer nodded.

Emily brought her into a hug and Spencer easily hugged her back.

"Thank god Ethan got here when he did" Emily sighed in relief.

Thank god I did.

They hugged for a little more before they pulled away as Emily looked at Aria and I.

"Where's Hanna?" Emily asked.

"I don't know. She won't answer any of my texts or calls" I shrugged.

Emily frowned before sighing and nodding her head as she turned back to Spencer.

"So, who is it? Who's helping Mona?" Emily asked.

"We should wait for Hanna" Spencer suggested.

"No, this is too important to wait" Aria shook her head.

She's right.

If Spencer knows who's helping Mona then we need to do know too, it's important.

"Ok, but you guys need to know that I've been warned not to tell you" Spencer said.

"What else is new?" Aria asked.

Wait...

Emily and I glanced at each other before looking back at Spencer.

"Wait a minute. You knew who it was before tonight?" Emily asked, shocked.

"Yeah. I've known for a few weeks" Spencer nodded.

Why the hell did she keep this a secret?

Why didn't she tell us the second she learned who it was?

"Why didn't you tell us any sooner?" Aria asked in shock.

"I wanted to be sure. I didn't want to believe that it could be true, but after tonight happened, I can't keep this to myself anymore" Spencer explained.

Alright...now she needs to tell us.

Spencer closed her eyes, took a deep breath, before reopening her eyes.

"Toby is A" Spencer revealed.

I swear to god I felt my heart drop all the way down to my stomach.

What...what did Spencer just say...?

Please tell me that what she said was all in my head and she said a different name.

We all stood in silence for a good few minutes, none of us knew what to say, we were frozen in shock.

Emily had tears streaming down her face while I was trying to process everything.

Aria stared at out the window before sighing and turning back to look at us.

"So, what are we saying? That what Ali wrote in Emily's notebook was true? That Toby's secretly hated us ever since Ali threw that firecracker in his garage?" Aria asked.

"Yeah, I guess so" Spencer sighed.

"Are we also saying that he hates Ethan too? After everything he did for him, he hates him along with us" Aria asked in disbelief.

Spencer looked up at me and slowly nodded her head.

I pressed my lips into a thin line, trying my best to contain the tears that were threatening to come out.

"And the whole time that you two... were together, he was just pretending" Aria slowly said.

Spencer nodded, clear sadness and betrayal shown in her eyes.

"Ok, we all know how much Toby loves you. This can't be true. There has to be more to the story" Emily was in denial.

I wanted to be in denial as well...but I don't know at this point...

Especially when I haven't heard from Toby in quite a while.

"If he loved me, he would not have let me sit outside of his loft bawling my eyes out for hours. Ok. He wouldn't have taken everything out of A's lair when he knew that I had the key. He wouldn't be trying to hurt me, us" Spencer angrily said.

Her lips trembled as she looked down at her lap.

"I am so sorry, Spence" Aria softly said.

I watched as my sister hid her face in her hands, sobbing into them.

I walked closer towards her and sat down next to her, slowly bringing my hand to her shoulder to gently rub it.

"Mona must have something over him" Emily whimpered.

Spencer shook her head and rubbed her eyes.

"Trust me, I have tried to come up with every possible explanation as to why he could be doing this, and it all leads back to the same conclusion" Spencer explained.

"The Toby I know would never do anything to hurt any of us. Especially Ethan" Emily argued.

I looked at her and scoffed, shaking my head.

Spencer stared at her for a few seconds before she began laughing.

Her laugh...it wasn't her usual laugh...this laugh was filled with many emotions that it was a bit concerning.

"What's so funny?" Emily asked, confused.

"You. You trying to make sense of this. You need to stop thinking about Toby as the person that you thought you knew and start looking at him for who he really is" Spencer angrily said.

"And how do I do that?" Emily angrily asked.

"You look at the facts, Emily!" I angrily spat.

The girls all jumped at my sudden outburst, looking at me with wide eyes.

I removed my hand from my sisters shoulder and stood up from her bed.

"None of us have heard from Toby in a while and we all know why. He's embarrassed and ashamed. Spencer found out the truth before any of us and when he knew his secret would come out to the rest of us, he ran off like a coward instead of staying to explain to us what his reasoning is" I angrily explained.

"Ok. Calm down, Ethan. Please" Aria sternly said.

I spun around to glare at her, causing her to flinch.

"No! I'm not going to calm down! Mona is with the decathlon team in New York City. She couldn't have locked Spencer in the steam room, and that leaves Toby!" I angrily yelled.

Aria's eyes widened in realization and horror.

Spencer pressed her lips into a thin line and nodded her head.

Emily...she had small tears streaming down her face, but she was still in denial.

My eyes watered and the tears I had been holding back slid down my face.

"The quicker you wrap your mind around this, the better" my voice broke as I spoke.

I sat back down on Spencer's bed and buried my face into my hands.

I sobbed into them, my shoulders shook as I continued crying my eyes out.

Spencer sighed before scooting closer to my side, wrapping her arms around me, placing a gentle kiss to my head.

I wrapped my arms around her and buried my head into her shoulder, still crying.

I can't believe it...I just can't believe it...

The Next Day

When morning came around I ate breakfast as fast as I could before leaving the house and went over to Alyssa's house.

Mr. Taylor let me in and told me Alyssa was in her room.

You'd think that her father would glare at me or threaten to kick my ass if I tried doing anything with Alyssa while we're in her bedroom.

But, believe it or not, Mr. Taylor really likes me and he loves Alyssa and I being together.

Ever since Alyssa and I became a couple I've gotten to know more about her family, especially her dad.

Mr. Taylor and I have quite a few things in common, believe it or not.

He knows that I'd never force Alyssa to do something she's not comfortable with.

He trusts me.

He trusts me enough to let the door stay closed while Alyssa and I talk.

Which is a good thing because what Alyssa and I have to talk about is something that stays between us.

"Hold up. You're telling me that Toby Cavanaugh, your best friend, the boy you defended against Alison, has been helping Mona?" Alyssa asked.

"Yes" I sighed.

"And he locked Spencer, your own twin sister and his ex-girlfriend, in the steam room last night?" Alyssa asked.

I could see that she was horrified just by talking about it.

"Yes" I sighed.

Alyssa stared at me for a good few seconds before sighing and running her hand through her hair.

"That's honestly alot to process" Alyssa said.

"You're telling me" I nodded.

Honestly the only information that has stuck to my head is Toby helping Mona.

Alyssa frowned when she saw the look on my face and walked towards me.

She sat down next to me, considering I was sitting on her bed, and placed her hand on my shoulder.

"Babe, are you ok?" Alyssa softly asked.

"I don't know" I sighed.

"Do you want to talk about it?" Alyssa asked.

"What's there to talk about? Toby, my best friend, my brother in all but blood, has been helping Mona this entire time. He not only broke Spencer's heart, but he locked her in the steam room because she had an affair with Wren. Why the hell would he do that?" I angrily ranted.

Tears gathered in my eyes and I felt them sliding down my cheeks.

Alyssa was silent. Letting me rant out my feelings, knowing that I had alot to let out.

"I trusted him. We've been best friends for the longest time. I defended him against Alison, I defended him against everyone when they believed he killed her and I cared for him" I softly said.

I turned to Alyssa and she frowned when she saw me crying.

"Was he angry at me for still being friends with Alison after everything she has done? Was our friendship a lie?" I softly asked.

The thought of our friendship being nothing but a lie makes me sick to my stomach.

"Did he hate me too?" I asked, whimpering.

Alyssa's eyes widened, sadness coursing through them.

"Oh, Ethan" Alyssa softly said.

She scooted closer to me and wrapped her arms around me, hugging me tightly.

I buried my face into her shoulder and began crying, trying to drown out my sobs.

Alyssa did nothing but hug me tightly, kissing my head a few times, rubbing my back up and down.

At The Brew

The girls and I all met up in the brew after Spencer told us she received some flowers.

I sat in between Aria and Hanna as we watch Spencer grab sugar to put into her coffee.

"I told you I was warned. If I ratted out T, A was gonna take one of my three" Spencer said.

"She's just trying to scare us" Aria said.

"Well, it's working" Hanna said.

I nodded and took a sip of my coffee.

"You need to stop looking for Toby. Just let it go" Hanna said, looking at Emily.

I looked at her with wide eyes and jaw drop. I wasn't the only one.

"You're looking for Toby? Why?" Spencer asked, shocked.

"It's not that I don't believe what you saw, ok. But he's my friend too, so I need to hear this from him" Emily explained.

"Ok, I understand that, but I looked for him for weeks. Trust me, he doesn't want to be found" Spencer sternly said.

Emily sighed and shook her head.

She glanced at me but I looked away from her.

I know she's going to ask if I've been trying to contact him. The last thing I want is to contact him.

After everything...I just don't think I can look at him the same.

"How long has she been standing there?" Aria asked.

We turned around and saw Mona by the counter, waiting for her drink.

Spencer glared at her, her lips formed into a scowl, and she shot up from her seat and stalked towards Mona.

"Spencer, wait. What are you doing?" Emily asked.

Hanna and I quickly got up and walked towards Spencer, ready to drag her back if needed.

Mona sensed her presence and turned around, looking slightly surprised to see Spencer.

"Hello. You're not planning on choking me again, are you?" Mona asked.

She acts as if she didn't deserve it.

"No. I just wanted to say thank you for the flowers. The orchids are especially beautiful" Spencer smiled tightly.

"I have no idea what you're talking about. Might be time to visit your doctor friend again" Mona said.

"I'm gonna hit her if she says that again" I muttered angrily.

"Listen to me, Mona. I'm not playing around. Do not hurt my friends or my brother. If you so much as touch one hair on their heads, I will make you very sorry. Am I clear?" Spencer asked.

"Looks like someone's been skipping their anger management class" Mona mockingly smiled at her.

"Looks like someone's been skipping 'how to be a sane human being' class" I mockingly smiled at her.

Spencer snorted loudly, not even bothering to cover it up.

Hanna snorted quietly, trying to glare at me, but failing.

Mona glared at me before shaking her head as she picked up her cup.

"I think I'll take my pumpkin latte to go" Mona said.

Good, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

"Oh, but a little tip on the orchids. Make sure not to leave them in direct sunlight. I did once, they didn't make it through the night" Mona gritted her teeth.

She went to leave, only to stop as her eyes wandered behind us.

We turned around and saw her staring at Emily, said girl looked uncomfortable and shifted in her seat.

Finally, Mona turned around and left the brew.

I really wish the door had hit her on the way out.

Late At Night

Hanna called Aria and I over because she needed our help with something.

Apparently, Wilden threatened Ms. Marin about something that had to do with Hanna, Ms. Marin tried leaving but Wilden kept on threatening her.

Ms. Marin ran over him with a car, but it was an accident and she was scared.

Especially when that son of bitch looked ready to pull out his gun.

Now Hanna's freaking out because Wilden's car was brought to her house and there's a video that shows Ms. Marin running him over.

"I don't understand. I hit that black box like a hundred times, and it didn't even crack. The video just kept playing over and over" Hanna explained.

"Buttercup, I don't think that it really matters, because whoever put that car in your garage has probably made copies" I explained.

"Well, it has to be A" Aria said.

"Agreed. Why would Wilden put his car in there?" Hanna asked.

I pressed my lips into a thin line and ran a hand through my hair.

"Ok, so if A did this, and nobody's seen Wilden, does that mean that Wilden's dead and that A has his body?" I asked.

"I don't know" Hanna sighed.

Aria sighed before walking towards the fridge and opening it.

"I think that maybe you should tell your mom" Aria said.

"What?!" Hanna and I asked in disbelief.

"She can handle a lot more than you think" Aria said.

"Aria, our moms are totally different. Mine hit the accelerator, remember?" Hanna asked.

Aria closed the fridge and handed us some soda. We really need to hydrate.

"And besides, I don't want to involve her until we know what we're dealing with" Hanna said.

"Buttercup, she already is involved! She is on that video, and it really doesn't look good for her" I yelled.

Hanna glared at me while I held my hands in surrender.

"Well, if A drove it here, who knows what's next? The cops could be on their way"

"You know what, just get into Ethan's car. Follow me" Hanna said.

She began walking away while Aria and I glanced at each other, clearly confused.

"Where are we going?" we asked.

But we received no answer.

At The Lake

So, apparently, Hanna's idea of getting rid of the problem is by dumping the car into the lake.

Aria and I obviously didn't want to do this, considering this could come back to bite us in the ass, but Hanna insisted we do it.

She wants to protect her mom, I get it, but this might not be the best idea.

"I really don't think this is a good idea" Aria said.

"Same here" I added.

"Just keep pushing" Hanna ordered.

We all grunted as we continued pushing the car, trying to get it inside the lake.

"There's gotta be a better solution!" Aria yelled.

"Well, there isn't!" Hanna yelled back.

"Buttercup, we're serious. We really, really need to rethink this" I sternly said.

Aria nodded while Hanna glanced at the two of us before rolling her eyes.

With all her strength, she managed to push the car into the lake, catching us off guard.

"Too late" Hanna muttered.

We watched as the car floated in the lake, we were desperately waiting for it to sink.

"I thought it would sink faster" I said.

"Yeah, me too" Hanna nodded.

"Well, what if it just stays there like that?" Aria asked.

"It'll sink" Hanna said, clearly annoyed.

"They're gonna be looking for his car" Aria said.

"I know" Hanna nodded, looking unbothered.

"Look, if they find it and they trace it back to us, we are totally screwed" I frowned, clearly worried.

"Yep" Hanna nodded.

Finally, the car sunk, causing the three of us to release breaths we didn't know we'd been holding.

"Told you it would sink" Hanna muttered to the two of us.

I rolled my eyes while Aria sighed and shook her head.

However, our eyes widened when the lights of the car went off, we could see the red light.

We waited for a minute before sighing in relief when the light went off, and the car was still underwater.

I grabbed Aria and Hanna by their arms and dragged them over to my car.

I just wanted to get the hell out of here and head home.
