Chapter Fourty-Four: Breaking The Code

Ethan's Pov

It was the next day and the girls and I were at school near Spencer's locker.

I told Spencer about the money that Jason found and she went to talk to him about giving her $2,000. At first he didn't want to give it to her, but when he found out it was about Ali and getting some answers, he agreed.

"We're giving him all of it? $2,000 is a lot of money" Emily said.

"Emily, if he can finally tell me who A is, I would hand over a million" Spencer said.

"Yeah and not ask for change" Aria nodded.

"How'd you get the money so fast?" Emily asked.

"What? Um...we have a relative" Spencer said and I nodded.

"Which one?" Emily asked.

"I promise that I wouldn't say. We both did" I said and Spencer nodded.

Emily sighed before turning to me.

"What time did Jonah say to meet him?" Emily asked.

"Six, but, um, look, not all of us are gonna go. It's just me and Spencer, so we'll meet up with you afterwards" I said.

"Why just you two?" Hanna asked, confused.

"Because I'm the face that he knows, and she's the bank" I said.

"If we crowd him, he's gonna think something's up" Spencer said.

"Something is up. We're finally gonna find out who's been torturing us since Ali's funeral, and, hello, I kind of wanna be there for that" Emily said.

"Volume" Spencer whispered yelled at her.

Emily sighed as Mona walked towards us and I smiled at her.

"Hey, ladies, Ethan" Mona smiled.

"Hey, Mona" I smiled at her.

Awkward silence filled around us for a few seconds before Mona cleared her throat.

"Ok. Um, Hanna, can I borrow you for a sec?" Mona asked.

Hanna smiled and nodded and they both walked away.

I smiled at both of them before wrapping my arm around my sister's shoulders and guided her away, the others following behind us.

At Home

After school was over me and Spencer went home so that we could tell Melissa everything.

We were in Spencer's room and once we told Melissa it's fair to say that she was shocked, angry and betrayed.

"Why would mom go along with this?" Melissa asked.

"It wasn't easy for her. She's angry too. She feels betrayed" Spencer said, defending mom.

I nodded but Melissa scoffed and shook her head.

"Don't protect her, she lied to us" Melissa angrily said.

Me and Spencer sighed before sitting down across from her.

I set my hands on my lap and took a few deep breaths.

"Mom's had to watch Jason every day since he was a little kid. I'm sure somewhere in her heart, she knew" I softly said.

"We should have known too. It's like we don't even know who mom and dad are anymore" Melissa said.

"Yeah, tell me about it. We have to rethink everything they've ever told us" Spencer sighed.

Melissa sighed at that and shook her head.

"I'm pretty sure Alison knew" I said.

"Really? Why?" Melissa asked.

"I don't know, just...little things she'd say" I said and Spencer nodded.

"Does anyone else know?" Melissa asked.

"No. I don't think so" Spencer said.

"Then let's keep it that way. Our family has suffered enough humiliation for ten lifetimes" Melissa said.

The last thing we want is for people to know about Jason being our brother.

Everyone in this town assumes, asks questions and make up stories when they don't even know the full truth.

Melissa sighed before standing up.

"I don't want to be here when Mom and Dad get home. Um...I'll call you guys later, ok" Melissa said.

"Yeah" Spencer nodded.

"Understandable" I nodded.

Melissa nodded at both of us and walked towards the door before stopping as she turned around again.

"Spencer, Ethan" Melissa said.

"Hm?" I asked.

"We'll get through this" Melissa softly said.

This brought small soft smiles to both mine and Spencer's faces as we nodded.

Melissa nodded before sighing as she left the room, leaving me and Spencer alone.

At The Park

Spencer and I were at the location that Jonah gave me. We were sitting at a bench together, waiting.

"What time is it?" Spencer asked.

"5:58" I said, looking at my phone.

It was silent for another few seconds before Spencer spoke up again.

"Ok, what time is it now?" Spencer asked.

"Spence, it's still 5:58" I deadpanned.

I get that she's anxious about this, I am too, but we have to patiently wait for Jonah to arrive.

I sighed in relief when I saw him walking towards us.

"He's coming" I said, nudging Spencer's arm.

Jonah walked towards us and nodded at me before looking at Spencer.

"Who's this?" Jonah asked.

I opened my mouth to say something when Spencer stood up.

"I'm the money" Spencer said.

Jonah raised an eyebrow at her while I sighed and shook my head before pulling her down.

"She is. She's the money" I nodded.

"So where is it?" Jonah asked.

"Nu-uh. Not until you hand over the info" Spencer sternly said as she stood up.

"No way. I've already been burned once. It's not gonna happen again" Jonah sternly said.

I looked up at Spencer and hesitantly nodded my head, telling her to hand him the money.

Spencer sighed before slowly taking the envelope that had the money inside out of her jacket. She hesitated to give it to Jonah so I stood up and took it from her before giving it to him.

"Here" I said.

Jonah opened the envelope and began scanning the money, making sure that it was actually $2,000.

He nodded his head before looking at us.

"Hear from Vivian yet?" Jonah asked.

"No, no, nothing" I said.

"You don't owe me answer, but she does" Jonah sternly said.

He took out a green paper from his pocket before handing it to me. I took it from him and he walked away.

Me and Spencer looked at each other before looking at the paper in my hand.

"This is it" I whispered.

Without wasting anymore time I quickly unfolded the paper.

However, much to our confusion and annoyance, there was nothing on the paper other than an address.

What the hell?

"Hey, wait! No! Whoa! Wait!" Spencer yelled.

We ran towards Jonah and luckily he turned around to look at us, causing us to stop.

"There's no name. There's no number. This is just an address. Where's the rest of it?" I asked.

"The text came from a burner phone. I was only able to trace the location" Jonah said.

"I-I don't believe this" Spencer said in disbelief.

"That's all I gave Vivian. She was happy with it" Jonah shrugged.

"We're not, ok. You need to give me back half the money 'cause we only got half the information" Spencer sternly said.

"That was the money that was owed to me. The way I look at it, you got the address for free" Jonah said.

He turned around to walk away but I wasn't having any of it.

I stalked towards him and grabbed him from the back of his jacket and turned him around.

"Give me this" I said, snatching the envelope from him.

"Hey, what are you doing? That's my money" Jonah angrily asked.

I opened the envelope and took half of the money out and stuffed it in my pocket. I left the other half in the envelope before shoving the envelope back into Jonah's jacket pocket.

"There's no way in hell you're getting all that money when we only got half the information when we needed more and we thought you had more. Unless you can give us something useful, I'm keeping half of the money, now have a good day" I scowled.

I grabbed Spencer's arm and dragged her away. We're lucky that Jonah didn't follow us and just walked away.

When we were far away we stopped walking and sighed.

"I know that we're angry, but we got something, and this address is the best that we have so far" I said.

Spencer sighed in annoyance before nodding her head.

She took out her phone and wrote the address down. We looked at her phone as the address popped up on the map.

"It's 20 minutes from here" Spencer said.

We both looked at each other and nodded as we began walking.

However, we came to a stop when we saw Garrett sitting inside his car, looking at us while eating something.

What the hell? Did he follow us here?

This dude is fucking creepy, worse than Wilden, or maybe just the same amount of creepy.

"How long do you think he's been there for?" Spencer asked.

"I don't know. But there's no way in hell that we're going to that address right now" I sternly said.

The last thing we need is for Garrett to follow us, especially when none of this concerns him.

Late At Night

The girls were all at mine and Spencer's house and we were in my room.

Hanna was currently telling us the relationship between her mother and Wilden and why A has been going after her.

Not only that but A is going after Mona too.

I swear she, her, it or bitch has a death wish for going after another one of my best friends.

"So, that's why you were never charged with shoplifting?" Aria asked.

"Ok, you know what? Please, no jokes, no judging" Hanna sternly said.

"All of this was over a pair of designer sunglasses" Spencer said, confused.

Me and Hanna sent her pointed looks as Spencer held her hands up in surrender.

"I'm sorry, I'm just still processing" Spencer said.

"God, if my mom knew that I told you guys this" Hanna sighed.

"We'd never judge her. She took me in. She's amazing. My mom would have driven me to the station and offered to take the mug shot" Emily said.

"The real question is, why is A suddenly going after Mona? What, we're not enough?" I asked, angry.

Hanna sighed and shrugged her shoulders, walking towards us.

She sat down on my bed and laid her head on my shoulder.

"A knows we're getting closer" Emily said.

"They can't turn us against each other, so they're using our friends to hurt us" Aria said.

"How much did you tell Mona about A?" Emily asked.

"Nothing. I didn't say anything. I feel like I should. We all know what A's capable of" Hanna said.

"Yeah, that's exactly why the less Mona knows, the better" Spencer softly said.

Hanna sighed as she lifted her head from my shoulder.

"I guess you're right" Hanna said.

She stood up from the bed and walked towards the door.

"Where are you going?" I asked.

"I haven't eaten anything all day. I'm starting to get a twitch" Hanna said.

"When you go down there, could you look outside and see if Garrett's car is still out front?" I asked.

"Yeah" Hanna nodded, smiling.

She left my room as we all looked at each other.

"He followed us home" Spencer said.

I rolled my eyes at that and nodded, talk about creepy and annoying.

Spencer got up from my bed and made her way towards the door when Aria spoke up.

"A sent my dad a letter, trying to get him to catch me and Ezra, and now my mom's on the hunt to find out who A is" Aria quickly said.

Silence.

Absolute silence.

Me and the girls didn't know what to say. We just stared at her with wide eyes in shock.

"Wait, whoa, wait. Back up. Why would A send your dad a letter like that if you weren't still seeing Ezra?" Spencer asked, confused.

"Because I am still seeing him" Aria said.

My eyes widened even more and my jaw hit the ground, again.

Are you telling me that Aria is still seeing Ezra when she knows the risks?

I call complete and utter bullshit.

"Guys, I-I'm sorry, ok. I really wanted to tell you. I just, I thought it'd be dangerous" Aria sighed.

Emily sighed and sent her a small smile and reached out to grab her hand.

"We understand" Emily softly said.

"No, speak for yourself" me and Spencer angrily said.

Emily gave us 'really' looks while Aria looked at us nervously.

"Didn't we have, like, multiple conversations where we talked about how heartbroken we were over losing Toby and Ezra?" Spencer angrily asked.

"I didn't-" Aria started but Spencer cut her off.

"God, you deserve an Oscar for that performance" Spencer scoffed.

"Look, I'm sorry, okay, but if it's any consolation, my dad is doing everything he can to make sure Ezra's out of my life and Rosewood for good" Aria said.

"Good, that's what should've been done from the beginning" I sternly said.

Aria looked at me with wide eyes in shock as I crossed my arms.

"Aria, I'm sorry, I know how much you really love him but you have to understand that your dad is doing the right thing. For god sakes, Ezra was your teacher and although he might not be teaching at our school anymore he's still an adult and you're a minor. As much as I want you to be happy, I think it should be with someone else rather than him" I sternly explained.

Aria stared at me in complete shock, lost at words.

I understand that she loves him but she deserves better, she deserves to be in a relationship with someone that she can show off to the world rather than hide your relationship in fear.

I understand where Mr. Montgomery is coming from and I just want Aria to understand too.

"You guys! Come down here!" Hanna yelled from downstairs.

We all looked at each other before leaving my room as we walked downstairs.

We walked towards Hanna as she was sitting on the kitchen stool, looking at Spencer's laptop.

"Caleb sent me an e-mail. He told me to open the attachment immediately. Can I do it on your laptop?" Hanna asked.

"Yeah" Spencer nodded.

"What is this about? Did he crack more of A's phone?" Emily asked.

We looked at Spencer's laptop to see a video coming on, the camera was being moved around so it was hard to tell what we were looking at.

"If he did, I want the rest of the money back" Spencer angrily said.

I nodded while the girls sighed and shook their heads at us.

"What are we supposed to be looking for?" I asked, confused.

The camera moved around and from what I could tell it had fallen to the ground just based on how it was positioned.

"She's coming upstairs" I heard Jenna say.

"Are we about to see Alison get killed?" Hanna asked in fear.

The camera remained where it was but footsteps could be heard from outside the room.

The door then opened, revealing none other than Melissa Hastings.

The girls all let out collective gasps while I dropped the water bottle I was holding.

"Where is she?" Melissa asked, basically demanded.

"Oh my god!" I gasped.

"It's Melissa" Spencer gasped.

The girls looked at the both of us while Spencer and I glanced at each other.

Why the hell was Melissa in Alison's bedroom the night she disappeared?

Oh dear lords, please don't tell me our sister had something to do with Alison's death.

"Guys, we need to give this to the cops like, right now" Aria said.

"I agree" Emily nodded.

"Yeah, me too" Hanna nodded.

"No" me and Spencer quickly said.

The girls all looked at us, clearly shocked by what we said.

"Why?" Aria asked.

"W-we need to talk to Melissa first. We need to find out what she was doing in Alison's room" Spencer said and I nodded.

"Isn't it obvious? She was a part of that night. T-they were all after Alison" Emily said.

"You don't know that. She...she just...she could have just been looking for Ian" I nervously stuttered.

Spencer gulped and nodded as we both walked further into the living room.

We looked at the girls and saw that they were all giving us deadpan looks, clearly not buying what we were saying.

"Look, ok, I know that Melissa had her issues with Alison, but we're not about to turn in our pregnant sister" I sternly said.

"I will. Watch me" Hanna challenged.

"Hanna! You just asked us not to be so quick to judge your own mother, and now you're ready to throw our sister behind bars!" Spencer angrily yelled.

"Spencer! Ethan! Melissa has lied to you both so many times. Why do you think she's gonna tell the truth now? Huh?" Aria angrily asked.

"Because I haven't always been so honest with her either. But maybe if I come clean and I tell her what we saw-" Spencer started but Emily cut her off.

"She'll come up with a bigger lie!" Emily yelled.

"Not if she knows what's at stake!" I yelled back.

The girls all gave us disbelieving looks and shook their heads, clearly not believing that we were defending Melissa after what we just saw.

I don't care what they think or what we saw, I just know that Melissa would never kill anyone, let alone Alison. No matter how badly she hated her she would never hurt her let alone kill her and bury her.

"Please, ok, just give us this one night to talk to her" Spencer begged.

Aria sighed before turning around to look at Emily and Hanna.

They both sighed before reluctantly nodding their heads.

"Fine. Fine, go to Melissa, ok, and we'll try to figure out where A was sending those texts from" Aria said.

"I'll go with you guys. Spence, talk to Melissa and tell me what she says" I said.

Spencer sighed and nodded her head.

I kissed her forehead before grabbing my jacket as I walked towards the girls.

"Spence, talk to her. Now" Hanna sternly said.

She grabbed her things before leaving, me following behind her and the others.

At Froelich William's & Lang Law Office

The girls and I went to the location that was on the paper Jonah gave me when Spencer and I went to give him the money.

We made it to the location and walked towards a fence and saw a house.

"This is it" I said.

"There's no way we're gonna get in here" Emily said, gesturing to the lock on the door.

Aria tried getting the lock off the door, but no luck.

But then I saw something on the door and when I got a closer look I groaned in annoyance and rolled my eyes.

I pushed the door open, causing Aria to stop as her and the girls looked at me in shock.

It was already open, so not much there.

We all walked inside as we walked up the stairs. Aria walked towards the doorknob and tried opening the door, but nothing.

"Now what?" Aria asked in annoyance.

"Let's just look around" I shrugged.

We all nodded as we began looking around the house, trying to see if we could find anything useful.

I was about to use my flashlight to peek through the windows when I heard Aria let out a loud scream.

I turned around just in time to see Aria trip over something and fall to the ground as an alarm went off.

"Aria!" I yelled.

The girls and I ran towards her. Me and Emily crouched down next to her and gently grabbed her arms, helping her up.

We made sure to support her the entire time before we ran back towards the door and got out of there.

We turned around only to see an old man coming out of the house as he looked around.

"That's definitely not A" Emily said.

"Oh really? What gave it away? The fact that we were lured to an old ass place or the fact that it's an old man and not someone younger?" I sarcastically asked.

Emily glared at me and rolled her eyes as the four of us ran off.

The Next Day

It was the next day and we were at school, trying to get our minds off everything that happened yesterday.

I'm not sure what happened to Spencer yesterday since she didn't show up for her first few classes, so unlike her.

I was with Hanna and we were walking towards Aria and Emily to sit with them for lunch when we saw Mona sitting by herself at a table.

She was staring at her apple, fear in her eyes.

I furrowed my eyebrows in confusion as we both walked towards her.

"Hey, Mona, everything ok?" I softly asked.

Mona just looked up at me before sighing as she handed me the paper that was taped to her apple.

I looked at it and my eyes widened when I saw that it was a message from A.

You didn't bite the first time but you will

- A

Hanna and I glanced at each other before looking around the room.

We turned our attention back on Mona when we saw her beginning to gather her things.

"Mona, where are you going?" Hanna asked.

"I'll take the rest of the day off. I'm not gonna be a sitting target" Mona said.

"Mona, don't, look just come eat with us" I said.

Mona frowned up at me and looked at Hanna, only to see her nodding her head in agreement.

She glanced at Aria and Emily before looking at us.

"I'm not sure your friends-" Mona started but Hanna cut her off.

"Trust me. They're cool" Hanna softly smiled.

"Come on, they won't bite and if they did I'll scold them" I reassured her.

Mona giggled at that before sighing and nodding her head.

"Ok" Mona said, getting up.

I grabbed her lunch tray as we walked towards the other table.

I smiled at Emily and Aria as they smiled at all of us, including Mona.

I set Mona's tray down before sitting down. Mona sat down next to me while Hanna sat down next to Emily.

"Hey, Mona. How's it going?" Emily kindly asked.

Maybe, just maybe, the girls will see how great of a person Mona really is and they'll slowly warm up to her.

Late At Night

Spencer and I were both in the kitchen, going over the video we saw last night.

Spencer told me that she tried meeting up with Melissa but apparently she cancelled.

But that was a lie because Spencer saw her get into Garrett's car, making her and me more suspicious than ever.

We've been trying to call and text her but so far nothing. It was basically a waiting game at this point.

While we were watching the video we heard noises, causing us to look at each other before I stopped the video.

"Mom? Is that you?" I asked.

"Dad?" Spencer asked.

We looked at each other as I scooted closer to my sister, wanting to make sure she was near me at all times.

We continued looking around when all of a sudden we saw Melissa walking in.

Spencer quickly shut her laptop before Melissa could see the video.

"It's just me" Melissa reassured us.

"Where have you been? We've been trying to call you for the past 12 hours" I asked.

"It's a long story" Melissa said as she walked towards us.

"I know that you lied to me. I saw you get into the car with Garrett" Spencer said.

"I'll explain everything, but just not here" Melissa said.

"Why not?" I asked, confused.

"Because Mom and Dad will be home any minute, and I can't say what I need to say in front of them" Melissa said.

"Well, what do you need to say that you can't say in front of Mom and Dad?" Spencer asked, confused.

"Do you remember the night of Ian's funeral, when I tried to tell you something? Well, I need to talk to you and Ethan about it now" Melissa said.

She turned around and began walking away, only to stop and look back at us with raised eyebrows.

"Are you both coming or not?" Melissa asked.

"Yeah, ok" I nodded.

We got up as Spencer grabbed her purse before we grabbed our jackets and left with Melissa.

I'm not sure what the hell it is that she needs to talk to us about, but all I can hope is that it has nothing to do about Alison's death.

Because the last thing I want is for my sister, my pregnant sister, to go to jail.
