Chapter Fifty: Blood Is The New Black

Ethan's Pov

It was hard for me to focus on school due to the fact that it's starting again and we're back to being tortured by a new A.

I can't believe that after everything we went through we're back to square one. Again.

We're never going to catch a break, are we?

Right now I was currently in English class, Ms. Montgomery's class, with my sister, Aria, Emily and Alyssa.

I can't tell you how excited I was that Alyssa nearly had the same schedule as me.

"The author goes to great lengths to establish Hedda Gabler as a strong, proud woman, someone who could never live with the threat of being blackmailed. But Hedda was pushed to take a desperate action. And while she may have seen it as brave, we see it as tragic" Ms. Montgomery explained.

Ms. Montgomery passed out the papers before walking back to her desk.

Alyssa glanced at me and flashed me a small smile, making me flash her one back.

"What might really be tragic is if some of you don't start taking some notes" Ms. Montgomery said, annoyed.

We all sighed before picking up our pens or pencils to start taking down some notes.

"Sorry. Senior year is not all about skipping classes and dancing for the security cameras at Walmart. That's what your weekends are for" Ms. Montgomery said.

I turned around when I saw Alyssa leaning over to my side, given that her seat was right next to mine.

"Is it weird that I actually do that on the weekends?" Alyssa asked.

"Really?" I asked, looking at her in amusement.

"Don't judge me, I love dancing and entertaining the workers with my amazing dance moves" Alyssa smiled, flipping her hair.

I let out a quiet snort at that and shook my head, giving her a gentle shove.

Alyssa glared at me and hit my arm, making me playfully glare at her before she went back to taking notes.

"You might also want to research some of his other plays and see how they were received at that time" Ms. Montgomery said.

As I was taking notes I heard a gasp from behind me and turned around to see Emily standing up in her seat, looking complete frightened.

"Emily, is everything alright?" Ms. Montgomery asked in concern.

Everyone else turned around to look at Emily, Spencer and Aria looked at her in worry just like I was.

"C-can I be excused?" Emily asked, stuttering nervously.

Ms. Montgomery opened her mouth to say something but Emily quickly ran out of the room.

The girls and I glanced at each other before standing up from our seats as we ran out of the room to catch up with her and find out what was wrong.

When we got outside we saw Emily running into the girls bathroom and we saw Hanna in the hallway, looking confused and worried.

"Wait, what's going on?" Hanna asked.

"We don't know, just come on" I said.

We all ran inside the girls bathroom just in time to see Emily washing her hands, still looking frightened.

"Em, what's the matter?" Aria asked in concern.

"Hey, talk to us, we're here for you" I softly said.

Emily sighed before reaching for something in her purse. She took something out before handing it to Aria.

Aria examined the thing that was in her hand, it looked like some sort of necklace, but what creeped me out was the fact that there were freaking teeth on the strings.

"What is that?" Hanna asked.

I took it from Aria and began examining it myself, trying to see if they were real or not.

"Are those teeth?" Aria asked in disgust.

"Ew" Hanna gagged, covering her mouth.

"Please just get rid of it" Emily begged.

Spencer walked over to me and tried examining them herself, trying to figure out if they were real or not.

"Are they Alison's?" Aria asked, worried.

"Oh my god, I can't breathe" Emily said, turning around to look at us.

"It wasn't enough to steal her bones, now we're gonna get pieces of her delivered to us?" Aria asked.

"Guys, relax, they're not human teeth" I reassured them.

"No, they're totally human" Hanna said.

"How do you know?" Spencer asked, confused.

"Because I worked at a dentist's office" Hanna defended.

"For two days, answering phones" Spencer said.

"Yeah, and there were teeth everywhere. Even the friggin' bathroom key was shaped like a cuspid" Hanna angrily said.

"Buttercup, may I remind you I had a summer internship at Harvard about medical stuff since I want to be a doctor. I learned enough from a few other interns to know what real teeth look like and what fake teeth look like" I explained.

All of a sudden we heard voices from outside the bathroom, causing all of us to panic.

We quickly ran into one of the stalls and closed the door, deciding to hide there, at least for now.

"Guys, real or not, this A is working overtime to frame us. First the call to Emily from Spencer's phone, then the cemetery photo, and now-" Aria started but Emily cut her off.

"It's all my fault" Emily sighed.

"Em, stop" Hanna sternly said.

"No. That whole night is like a black hole. I still can't figure out how I got to Ali's grave" Emily said.

"We need to give this to the police" Aria said, taking the necklace from my hands.

"We can't. We already lied to them about the lake house" Spencer said.

"Yeah. That was a huge mistake. We keep digging ourselves in deeper. Burning those photos was one thing, these are teeth. Ok. We should at least tell our parents" Aria said.

"Tell them what? We have no idea what this A knows. Are you ready to explain every lie we've ever told since Ali died?" Spencer asked.

"Guys, you don't have to protect me, ok. I can take the blame for all of this" Emily said.

"Emily, stop. You're not in this by yourself" I sternly said.

"But if you could remember something else from that black hole besides an old car, that'd be nice" Hanna suggested.

"Hanna" Aria and I deadpanned.

"What? I'm just saying, it'd be helpful" Hanna defended.

"Can we please just get rid of that?" Emily asked, looking at that necklace in fear.

"No, we can't toss this. This is evidence" Aria said.

"Look, I'll put it in my locker until we figure out what to do" Spencer said.

"What? So now your locker is safe from A?" Hanna sarcastically asked.

"Just give it to me. I'll put it in my purse" Hanna said.

She tried getting it from Aria but they both fought for it which led to the necklace dropping inside the toilet.

Great, that's just great.

"Hanna" Aria said, annoyed.

"Would you relax? I'll get it" I said.

I tried reaching for it but Aria held her hands out, stopping me.

"No, wait! You can't just dive in there. These things have sensors" Aria said.

"Excuse me?" I asked.

"You just have to be really careful" Aria said.

"Well, if you would like to" I suggested.

"No" Aria sighed.

I rolled my eyes before rolling my sleeve up as I slowly and carefully dived in for the necklace.

We all flinched and moved back a bit when the bell rang, as soon as that happened the freaking toilet flushed, thus getting rid of the necklace.

I groaned in annoyance and facepalmed.

Great, that's just freaking great.

At Lunch

"I can't believe that we lost it" Spencer said, referring to the necklace.

"It wasn't like we were gonna hand it over to the cops" I said.

"I wanted to. We could have found out who sent it to us. There were fingerprints on that necklace" Aria said.

"Yeah, mine" Emily deadpanned.

"Hanna, Ethan, you guys have to go back to Radley" Spencer said.

"What?" Hanna and I asked, shocked.

"You guys need to make Mona talk" Spencer said.

"Spencer's right. Mona has never been working alone, and she's probably still giving people orders. Find out who else has seen her" Aria said.

"Ok, you guys just ripped us a new one last week for visiting her. Now you want us to go back there with cupcakes?" I angrily and sarcastically asked.

Emily sighed before turning to Spencer.

"If we want answers maybe we should be focusing on Garrett" Emily said.

Spencer has been visiting Garrett in jail, wanting more answers and as far as we're concerned he's the only one that can give them to us.

"I will go back to Garrett, if you will work on Mona. Will you go today? After school?" Spencer asked, looking at both me and Hanna.

I sighed and shook my head, not saying anything.

Hanna scoffed and rolled her eyes before grabbing her things and getting up, walking away.

When she walked out Jenna walked in.

"Has anyone spoken to her since school started?" Emily asked in curiosity.

"No. I still think it's really shady that she didn't get back the first day of school" I said.

"It's no shadier than Lucas strolling around on Saturday at four in the morning" Aria said.

"Well, maybe that's their witching hour" Spencer said.

"So now we think they're definitely connected? Jenna and Lucas?" Emily asked.

"Em, you saw them talking to that black swan person at the masquerade party. Mona could have an entire outfield playing for her" Aria said.

We heard a thud and turned around to see Jenna standing near a table that was filled with a group of people.

She accidentally bumped into someone and spilled her drink on them.

"Is it just me, or is she blinder than she was last year?" Aria asked.

Yeah, Jenna has never bumped into anything when she was blind, she was actually doing really well despite it.

She's never had problems before. Something's definitely going on.

My eyes wandered around before I spotted Alyssa sitting at a table by herself, reading a book while eating some chips.

"Well, see you girls later, see you at home, Spence" I said.

I gathered my things before making my way towards Alyssa. I smiled and set my stuff down and sat down.

Alyssa looked up from her book and a smile appeared on her face when she saw me.

"Ethan, hey. I didn't think I'd see you again after you ran out of English class" Alyssa chuckled.

"Well, no need to worry, I'm here. What are you reading?" I asked.

"Oh, just some poetry, my mom always gives them to to me as birthday presents" Alyssa smiled.

"That's thoughtful. Are they good?" I asked.

"Really good. I have a few favorites but I honestly like all of them" Alyssa said.

"Well don't just sit there, show me some of them" I smiled.

Alyssa fondly rolled her eyes before scooting closer to me as she showed me a few pages of the book. She introduced me to a few that stood out to her the most and I have to admit that I found them really interesting.

I mean, poetry has never been my favorite but that doesn't mean I don't like it.

And everytime Alyssa would ramble about the poems, I found myself smiling softly at her, admiring everything she said. I honestly found her rambling really cute, if I do say so myself.

We were so caught up in talking about the poems that we didn't notice my sister and my two best friends smirking at us.

At Radley

It was already late at night and I actually ended up going back to Radley.

At least not alone because Hanna thought about it too and ended up going with me.

So right now we were both at Radley, we were currently in Mona's room talking to her, and of course she just sat on her bed and said nothing.

"So it turns out that Bridget Woo takes a spinning class with that frizzy-haired girl who dates the quarterback. You know, the one who transferred from Ohio" Hanna explained.

"Well, Noel Kahn thinks this dude is a genius because he can burp the star-spangled banner" I scoffed.

Silence. Absolute silence. Mona still didn't say anything.

We've been talking to her for who knows how long and we were getting annoyed. Me especially.

"Have you heard from Noel? Does he ever come visit you? Has anyone come to visit you besides us?" Hanna asked.

Mona, once again, said nothing and just stared at us in silence.

Hanna sighed, clearly annoyed and disappointed.

While I looked down at my lap, my fists clenched at my side while my teeth were gritted.

You know what, fuck this. I'm done with her bullshit.

I abruptly stood up, causing Hanna to look up at me in concern, but I ignored her and walked towards Mona, standing in front of her.

"You know what, Mona? If I told the police that you mowed me down with your car, you would not be here getting a slice of peach pie every day to wash down your meds. You'd be sharing a jail cell with someone calling you peach pie while you braid her back hair!" I angrily snapped at her.

"Bubs-" Hanna started, but I held my hand up, stopping her.

I snatched the visitor pass from my shirt and threw it in the trash. I began pacing back and forth in the room, tugging at my hair before spinning around to look at Mona.

"God, Mona, you owe me! Alright! You have made my life a nightmare! You owe me! And not just me, you owe my sister and my friends! You owe us everything after what you put us through!" I angrily yelled at her.

"Ethan, please calm down" Hanna said, standing up from her chair.

I ignored her, not wanting to listen to anything she has to say.

I had to get everything I was feeling off my chest. I just had to. I can't keep them in anymore.

"How could you do this to me? How could you hurt me like this after everything I've done for you in the past? I defended you against Alison and her bullying, I befriended you not because I felt bad, but because I liked you and wanted to get to know you better and discover who you really are because I knew that you were more than what Alison called you!" I yelled at her.

Tears streamed down my face as my eyes slowly turned red and my cheeks turned puffy.

"Everything I did was for you and you repay me by torturing me, my friends and my sister! You fucking ran me over with a car and nearly killed me! You put us through hell! You owe me, you fucking owe me!" I yelled.

I grabbed my chair and without thinking I threw it across the room.

Hanna screamed and covered her face as the chair broke and the pieces scattered around the room.

Mona didn't even flinch when that happened. Figures.

The door opened and Wren walked in, his eyes widening when he saw the broken chair.

"What's going on?" Wren asked.

I didn't say anything, I was too angry and upset to say anything.

Hanna was in shock and couldn't say anything either.

"This visit's over. Now" Wren sternly said, looking at both me and Hanna.

"Fine by me, I don't want to be anywhere near this bitch" I angrily spat.

I grabbed my bag from the bed and walked out, purposefully bumping into Wren's shoulder as I walked out of the room.

"Ethan!" Hanna yelled out to me, but I ignored her and kept walking.

Not once did I look back. Not once.

The Next Day

The next day at school the girls and I were walking in the hallway together.

Apparently Emily and Mr. Fitz, or Ezra, met up at the Brew to study since Emily had to take a makeup test and if she doesn't pass she'll have to repeat the grade.

"It was weird, but we got past it" Emily said.

"Wait, so you're calling him Ezra, or Mr. Fitz?" Hanna asked.

"Neither. It's a lot easier not to call him anything" Emily said.

"Oh. That's what your dad does, right, Aria?" I asked.

"Just about. This whole 'don't ask, don't tell' thing is not working" Aria said, annoyed.

"I did that with my mom forever. But she finally came around. By the time I brought Tamara over, they were bonding over arts and crafts" Emily smiled.

I smiled at her and patted her shoulder.

It's fair to say that Mrs. Fields has finally accepted Emily for who she is and whenever Emily takes an interest in any girl she's more than happy to welcome them.

"Yeah, I don't think my dad is gonna be scrapbookin' with Ezra anytime soon" Aria said.

We all chuckled at that and shook our heads as we made our way to her locker.

When she opened her locker we saw a white envelope hanging inside, causing all of us to furrow our eyebrows in confusion.

"What's that?" Hanna asked.

Aria grabbed the envelope and opened it. She took out an earring, a red earring, I didn't think it was too serious until I saw the look on Aria's face.

She looked nervous, really nervous, and more confused.

"Is that yours?" Spencer asked.

Aria didn't answer her and continued looking around, trying to find something or rather someone.

"What's going on? Whose is that?" I asked, worried.

Aria looked at us, gulping nervously, before sighing.

She explained to us that her and Alison went to her father's office to find something to see if he was still seeing Meredith. Aria found Meredith's earring in the couch, thus leading to her and Alison trashing her fathers entire office and made it seem like Meredith did it.

Damn, never knew Aria was capable of something like that.

But honestly if I were in her position I would've done the same thing.

"How come you never told us about that?" Emily asked.

"Why would I? I felt like complete crap by the time I got home, and I made Alison promise to never tell a soul" Aria said.

"So why is it in your locker? You've been hiding it this whole time?" Hanna asked.

"No. No. It's just that you guys. Don't you remember when Ali's mom called us before her funeral and she asked all of us if we each wanted to put something, a keepsake in her casket" Aria explained.

"And that's what you put in there?" I asked.

Aria sighed and nodded, causing all of us to look at each other.

"So real teeth or not, that was definitely stolen from Ali's grave" Spencer said.

Damn, we're in more trouble then we thought, especially if we put very important yet private things in Alison's casket.

Back At Home

Me and Spencer were in her room working on our homework.

While I was writing something I heard my phone ring. I picked it up and smiled when I saw that it was from Alyssa. Just before I could answer it I heard mom's voice.

"Ask whoever that is to call you back, please" Mom sternly said.

Spencer and I turned around to see mom standing by the door, and judging by the look on her face she didn't look happy at all.

"It's fine, I-I just won't answer it" I said.

I turned my phone off and set it down as me and Spencer both looked at mom.

"Everything ok?" Spencer asked.

"No. Clearly it's not if my daughter's making secret trips to the county jail and my son didn't think to tell me" Mom sternly said, walking more into the room.

Spencer's eyes widened as we both glanced at each other before looking back at mom.

"There's still a lot of things that I don't understand" Spencer said.

"Yeah, me too, like why would you have anything to do with a man who's accused of murdering two teenage girls?" Mom asked incredulously.

"Mom, Emily is really hurting, and I just wanted some answers. Did this happen to Maya because she knew too much?" Spencer asked.

"Did the D.A.'s office send you there to ask that question?" Mom asked.

When Spencer said nothing mom nodded her head.

"I didn't think so. I'm guessing it'll be answered at his trial" Mom said.

"Why are you talking to Spencer like she's a hostile witness? Maya was our friend, too" I said, clearly annoyed.

"This is a dangerous man, Ethan. He wouldn't be locked up if there weren't damaging evidence against him" Mom angrily said.

She closed her eyes and sighed before reopening them.

"Don't you ever go there again. Same goes for you, Ethan" Mom sternly said.

Fine by me, given that I don't want to be anywhere near Garrett.

Mom turned around to leave but Spencer spoke up, stopping her.

"So is rosewood safe now that one dangerous man is locked up? Because garret was already in jail when Ali's grave was dug up" Spencer asked.

"If you're implying that he's got helpful friends on the outside, that's even more of a reason not to see him. People might think that's you. Don't you ever go there again. Am I clear?" Mom asked.

Spencer said nothing but mom took her silence as a yes and left the room.

Well...damn, intense much.

The Next Day

I was with Alyssa and we were both walking around town together. School doesn't start until a few more minutes so we have time.

We made a small trip to the brew to get ourselves some coffee before walking around in town.

"I won't lie, the brew sells the best coffee" Alyssa smiled.

"Right" I nodded.

Alyssa smiled and giggled before taking a sip of her coffee.

"So, any reason why you didn't answer my call yesterday?" Alyssa asked.

My eyes widened in realization and nervousness and my cheeks turned red.

Shit, I forgot to call her back after mom left.

"Sorry, but my mom had to talk to me and my sister about something, and it was serious. So I couldn't talk to you" I said.

"I get that, but why didn't you at least call me back? Or text me?" Alyssa asked, raising an eyebrow at me.

I sighed and took a sip of my coffee, feeling like a real dick.

"I'm sorry, Alyssa. I want to say I forgot but if I'm being honest I was in a bad mood after my mom talked to me and my sister. I wasn't in the mood to talk to anyone" I said.

I was worried that she would get mad at me and walk away, clearly angry.

But much to my surprise and relief, she sent me a reassuring smile and patted my shoulder.

"Don't worry, Ethan. I don't feel like talking to anyone when I'm in a bad mood, so it's understandable. Thank you for being honest with me" Alyssa softly smiled.

I sighed in relief and sent her a thankful smile.

Thank god, I didn't want her to be angry at me. I'm happy she was understanding.

"You know, you're pretty understanding and don't get angry easily, especially when someone tells you the truth" I said.

"I'd rather have someone tell me the truth than be lied to. The truth can hurt at times but it's better than not being honest to someone. Besides, I can be patient at times" Alyssa shrugged.

I nodded at that, already seeing where she was coming from.

We both looked at each other, longer than intended to, as small smiles made their way onto our faces. A minute later we quickly cleared our throats and looked away from each other.

I swear I could feel my cheeks heat up and  I patted my cheeks so that the blush would go away.

Wait, hold up, why the hell am I blushing?

"So" Alyssa said, breaking the silence we were in.

"Yeah, uh, is there anything else you want to ask?" I asked.

"Maybe another time, we should probably get to school before we're late" Alyssa suggested.

"Good call. Come on" I nodded.

Alyssa smiled and began walking, I smiled and followed after her.

The Next Day

The girls and I were currently talking in the girls bathroom. I seriously will never get used to being here.

So many things happened. Apparently Emily remembered something else from that night. She remembered Jenna being in the car, Jenna was the one driving the car.

Hanna went to Radley yesterday, this time with Caleb, to get more answers from Mona.

I honestly don't think I can go back to Radley. I can't see Mona anymore. I just can't bare to look at her because all those bad memories will return.

"That's all she said? Isn't that enough?" Aria asked.

"No. That is not enough. You have to go back to Radley, Han. Alone" Spencer sternly said.

"It's not so easy. Caleb is all over me" Hanna said.

"I don't need to know that" Spencer said, throwing her hand in the air.

"Well, Caleb's not finding dug-up jewelry in his locker. Whose earring did Ali find in my dad's couch?" Aria asked.

"Ok, one question at a time" I said.

"Wait, you're not gonna ask your mom why she's suddenly defending Garrett? I mean, seriously, Spencer, Ethan, what is that?" Hanna asked.

"He probably told her it's time to lock Jenna up. She was driving that night, guys. I remembered. Clearly" Emily said.

"We believe you, ok. But honestly, I don't think that you remember anything clearly from that night. When we picked you up you kept calling me Arlene" Aria said.

"Yeah, and you kept calling me Evan" I said.

"Guys, she can see. She's probably on Mona's payroll" Emily said.

"Ok, Mona does not have any cash. They won't even let her have floss" Hanna said.

The bell then rang, causing all of us to sigh.

"Ok, let's just do this at lunch. I can't be late again" Spencer said.

I hid behind Hanna as we all began exiting the bathroom, only for Spencer to turn around and shove us back inside.

"Spence, what the hell?" I asked, confused.

"Jenna's coming in here. Where's the earring?" Spencer asked.

"What?" Aria asked, confused.

"Give me the earring. I have an idea" Spencer said.

Aria still looked at her confused before nodding her head as she searched through her purse.

"What are we doing? Do I get to slap her again?" Hanna asked.

"No" Spencer and I deadpanned at her.

Aria handed Spencer the earring and Spencer quickly walked over to the sink, placing it somewhere there.

"Ok, get in the stalls. Go! Go!" Spencer yelled.

We all ran and got into the stalls. Spencer and Hanna hid together while Emily, Aria and I hid together in another stall. We peeked through the crack of the stalls to see what Jenna would do. This would be what we needed to prove that she's not blind.

We saw Jenna walk into the bathroom and began filling her bottle with water. She finished and was about to leave, only to stop. Then much to our shock, Jenna grabbed the earring and pulled her sunglasses down to examine it.

She raised an eyebrow at it before setting it back where it was. She pulled her sunglasses back up before leaving the bathroom.

Holy shit, she can see, she can fucking see.

We all exited the stalls and it's fair to say that we were all shocked and angry.

"I knew it. That is it. I'm going for way more than a slap" Hanna said.

"Hanna, stop" Spencer said.

"Stop why?!" Hanna yelled in frustration.

"Don't look at me. I'm ready to hang a sign. Bitch can see" Aria said.

"Guys, she doesn't know that we know" Spencer said.

"Yeah she will in a minute" I said and Emily nodded.

"No. We don't let her know that we know. Not yet. We can use this. And we will" Spencer smirked.

This made us smirk and nod in realization.

We can use this to our advantage, and that's getting the answers that we need. And Jenna's gonna give them to us, one way or another.
