Chapter Eighty: The Guilty Girl's Handbook

Ethan's Pov

Well, I think it's fair to say that things have gotten worse.

Why do I say this?

Because last night a car ran into Emily's house, right in her living room, and because of that Emily and her mother had to move into a motel.

They're fine, physically at least.

But mentally, I doubt that.

Hanna was on her phone after Emily texted her to tell her how her and her mom are.

"How are they?" Aria asked.

Hanna sighed as she set her phone down, "she said they're fine".

"A really likes throwing cars at people" Spencer sighed.

"Don't I know it" I muttered bitterly.

"Is there any chance this really was an accident?" Aria weakly asked.

This made Spencer and I shot her deadpan looks causing her to sigh as she took a sip of her coffee.

"Yeah, that's what I thought" Aria muttered.

"No, ok, A did this but why?" Hanna asked in confusion.

"To keep us off balance, keep us from finding red coat, or Cece Drake, or whoever we're dealing with" Spencer explained.

"Well, I think it really was Cece, and I hope that Toby and Caleb find her" Aria huffed.

I hope so too.

"God, Spence, Ethan, what is taking your mom so long?" Hanna asked, clearly impatient.

"Courts run on judge time, not lawyer time" Spencer told her to which I nodded.

"Well, it's an arraignment. All they have to do is set bail and she can go" Hanna said in frustration.

I sighed before placing my hand on her shoulder and began rubbing it reassuringly, trying to calm her down.

"Buttercup, she said that she would call you the minute that your mom was released. Alright" I softly said.

"Yeah, just take a breath" Aria softly said.

Hanna sighed before nodding her head as she breathed in and out a few times.

All of a sudden we heard footsteps causing all of us to perk up and turn around.

Mom walked into the kitchen and smiled at us.

And we would've smiled back at her if Ms. Marin had came in with her, but she didn't. Mom was alone.

Why was she alone? Where's Ms. Marin?

"Mom?" Spencer and I asked in unison.

"Hi. Have you kids had breakfast?" Mom asked.

We looked at her in confusion, especially when it's clear she's trying not to talk about what happened in court, and Hanna spoke up.

"Mrs. Hastings, where's my mom?" Hanna asked.

Mom looked at her before turning to Spencer and I.

"Spencer, Ethan, why don't you take Aria upstairs for a minute?" Mom suggested.

I opened my mouth to say something when Hanna stepped in, holding her arms out.

"No. No, I want them here" Hanna sternly said.

Mom, realizing that Hanna wouldn't let us leave or let this topic go, sighed and nodded her head.

"Hanna, we entered a plea of not guilty, but the judge refused to grant bail" Mom told her.

Hanna's eyes widened at that along with ours.

"No" Hanna gasped.

"Why?" I asked, confused.

"First degree murder of a police officer, a district attorney who doesn't want to make anymore mistakes" Mom explained.

She then looked at Hanna and let out a sigh.

"But we're definitely going to appeal" she told her.

"Ok, and how long is that going to take?" Hanna asked.

"The papers will be on the judge's desk this afternoon. But some things have been put in motion" Mom explained.

"What sort of things?" Aria asked, confused.

Mom glanced between us before her eyes settled on Hanna, sadness washing through her eyes.

"Hanna, your mother's going to be transferred to another location" Mom revealed to her.

My eyes widened at that and I looked at Hanna and saw her frozen in her seat, her eyes filled with nothing but shock and sadness.

"What location?" Spencer asked.

"She's going to be remanded to the state prison in Muncy until the trial. They'll move her tomorrow" Mom explained.

My heart stopped at that, I couldn't believe my ears.

I turned to Hanna and saw tears sliding down her cheeks causing me to frown.

Aria noticed and gently placed her hand on her shoulder and rubbed it to calm her down. I did the same with her other shoulder.

"God, you promised" Hanna told my mom, nothing but anger in her tone.

"Honey, I'm sorry" Mom softly told her, clearly guilty.

Hanna shook her head and stood up and ran upstairs.

"Buttercup!" I yelled.

I got up from my seat and ran after her with Spencer and Aria following behind me.

Not only was the bail denied for Ms. Marin but now she has to be transferred to another location far away from Rosewood.

In Spencer's Room

We were currently in Spencer's room. Aria, Spencer and I were sitting on her red couch while Hanna sat on her chair.

Hanna was clearly still upset from everything she just learned and that's understandable.

"I should be the one in jail, not my mom" Hanna sighed.

"Hanna, you didn't do anything wrong" Aria softly said.

"Yeah, somebody killed Wilden and A is taking advantage of that. It's not your fault" I softly told her.

"My mom went out there to protect me, how is this not my fault?" Hanna angrily asked.

Her phone rang and she sighed in annoyance before picking it up to check who was calling her.

She sighed and shook her head before tossing her phone back onto the table.

"It's Caleb, I can't talk to him right now" Hanna said.

Understandable.

"Buttercup, our mom is a really great lawyer" I told her and Spencer nodded.

"Well, then why isn't my mom out, bubs?" Hanna angrily asked.

"Because it's one hearing. She'll win the case. She always does" Spencer told her.

"Always?" Hanna sarcastically asked.

"Yes. Always" I sternly said.

I know that mom isn't going to give up and she sure as hell isn't going down without a fight.

Aria sighed before asking, "ok, so do you wanna go to school? Or not go?".

"No, you guys go. I'll be ok" Hanna told us.

"Are you sure?" I softly asked.

"I'm gonna have to see my dad. If my mom doesn't come back, then I have to move in with him and the gruesome twosome" Hanna scoffed.

Honestly, I'd run away before having to move in with him and his new family.

That piece of shit left his first family for his second family and focuses more on them than Ms. Marin and Hanna.

I'd rather die than have to live with him, his mistress and his evil stepdaughter.

She sighed before looking at us with a faint smile.

"You guys go. I'll be fine" Hanna told us.

"Ok" Aria nodded.

Spencer and I nodded and the three of us got up and gathered our things.

Just before we could leave Hanna stopped us, her eyes meeting mine and Spencer's.

"Spence, Ethan, tell your mom I'm sorry if I yelled at her" Hanna softly said.

"She's an attorney, ok? She's used to it" Spencer lightly chuckled.

"A really good one" Hanna softly smiled.

I nodded before making my way over to her and wrapping an arm around her shoulder.

"Call us if you need anything, alright?" I softly smiled at her.

"Yeah" Hanna nodded.

I leaned down and kissed her head before leaving the room with Aria and Spencer following behind me.

At School

When I got to school I met up with Alyssa and we were in the courtyard sitting on one of the tables.

I told Alyssa everything mom told us and Hanna and to say she was shocked was an understatement.

"I can't believe that not only was she not granted bail but she's getting transferred. How is that fair?" Alyssa angrily asked.

"It's like my mom said the judge refused to grant bail because a district attorney doesn't want to make anymore mistakes. I don't know why they have to transfer her, that sucks" I shook my head.

Alyssa shook her head at that, clearly appalled by what she just learned.

We all were.

"How is Hanna?" Alyssa softly asked.

"She's heartbroken, obviously. She's not going to be coming to school for a while and I don't blame her" I sighed.

"Me neither" Alyssa nodded.

I opened my mouth to say something but someone beat me to it.

Someone that I really, and I mean really, didn't want to be near me let alone my girlfriend.

"Hey, Ethan".

I gritted my teeth in annoyance and closed my eyes, taking a few deep breaths in order to calm myself down.

When I reopened them I slowly turned my head around and saw Seth standing near the table with a few books in his arms.

"Good to see you. I thought you wouldn't be here today" Seth said.

"And why did you think that?" I asked, raising an eyebrow at him.

"I tried looking for you earlier but I didn't see you. I thought you'd skip or something" Seth shrugged.

I internally rolled my eyes at that.

I glanced at Alyssa and saw her looking at the two of us in confusion, wondering how we knew each other.

Because as far as anyone knows Seth is still new to this school no matter if he had been here in the past.

"What do you want, Seth?" I asked, turning back to him.

"I just wanted to say hi and see how you were doing. Is that a crime?" Seth asked.

"No, but you should already know by now that I don't want to see you" I reminded him.

I swear to god telling him to leave me alone is like telling A to stop harassing us.

Which is impossible.

Why the hell can't he take the hint and leave me the hell alone?

Seth opened his mouth to say something when Alyssa decided to cut in.

"Hi. I don't think we've properly met. I'm Alyssa Taylor" Alyssa greeted herself.

Seth looked at her and I can see the visible hatred and distaste in his eyes.

Alyssa noticed, considering the prick didn't try to hide it, and shifted slightly in her seat but didn't really say anything.

"I know who you are. I'm Seth James, the new kid" Seth told her.

"Oh, you know who I am?" Alyssa asked in curiosity.

"Unfortunately" Seth told her, a slight scowl on his face.

Alyssa, sensing that he clearly wasn't happy to see her or be near her, chuckled awkwardly and looked down at her hands.

Seth opened his mouth to say something but I quickly stepped in.

"You can go now, Seth" I told him.

The last thing I want is for him to be here any longer than he has to.

The last thing I want is for him to open his mouth and, no doubt, badmouth my girlfriend because of his bitterness.

Seth looked at me and, after giving Alyssa a quick glance, nodded.

With that he turned around and walked away.

When he was gone I breathed out a sigh of relief, happy that he was no longer anywhere near me or Alyssa.

Speaking of my girl...

After Seth left she looked at me with furrowed eyebrows.

"Mind explaining to me how you know him? And why did he look at me like I was the enemy?" Alyssa asked.

I bit my lip at that and had an inner debate in my head.

I wanted to tell her about Seth, I wanted to tell her everything since I knew she deserves to know considering she is my girlfriend and I don't want to keep any secrets from her.

But...

"Not right now. When I'm ready, I'll tell you" I told her with a small smile.

Alyssa looked confused, and a little annoyed, at that but didn't push it any further and just nodded her head.

She went back to writing in her notebook while I sat there fiddling with my fingers.

Telling her everything about Seth isn't going to be today.

That's a story for another day.

Late At Night

I didn't go home after school. Instead, I went to the library so I can work on some homework.

Once I was done with that I met up with my sister and we went home together since it was getting late and dinner would be ready soon.

As we got home we opened the door and walked inside.

When we made our way into the kitchen we saw mom and her intern, Beckett, sitting on the kitchen stools.

Apparently, Spencer had come home earlier than I did for something and she met Beckett.

I asked her how he was like and all she said was that he was alright.

Well, it's better than him being a douche so I'll take it.

"Hey" Mom greeted us with a smile on her face.

"Hi" Spencer greeted her back.

"Hey, mom" I smiled.

"Kiddos, your dad wants you guys to meet him at the club for dinner. We're gonna be working here for awhile" Mom told us.

"Ok" Spencer nodded.

"We'll just put our stuff away and head over to the club" I nodded.

Mom nodded back at us before going back to what she was doing.

However, just as we were walking towards the stairs Beckett stopped us.

"I didn't hear you leave" Beckett said, his eyes trained on my sister.

Spencer chuckled and shrugged her shoulders, "you were busy".

Which is true since interns have tons of work and are always busy so it's kind of obvious he would be paying attention to those things.

Beckett chuckled before putting his hand on my sisters shoulder, causing her to stop walking and turn around.

I stopped walking myself and turned around, wondering what he wanted.

"By the way..." Beckett trailed off.

He glanced at mom before looking back at Spencer.

He then leaned forward in order to whisper so that mom wouldn't hear.

"Do you want me to slip that file back in the box before your mother notices?" Beckett asked.

I raised an eyebrow at that and looked at my sister in confusion.

Spencer looked at Beckett in slight shock and gave me a glance before looking back at him.

"What file?" Spencer asked, confused.

Beckett chuckled and shook his head at her and flashed her a knowing look as well as a knowing smile.

Spencer sighed before chuckling herself while shaking her head.

"I'll take care of it" Spencer reassured him.

Beckett chuckled before nodding, "suit yourself".

He turned around and walked back over to the counter to head back to work.

I turned to my sister and raised an eyebrow at her causing her to turn to me and let out a sigh.

"I'll explain later. Lets just put our things away and head to the club" Spencer told me.

I sighed but nodded and made my way upstairs with Spencer following behind me.

Back At Home

After getting back from the club Spencer and I had just gone up to our rooms to do whatever.

I finished a homework assignment and was now heading downstairs to get myself a snack.

However, when I made it downstairs I saw Spencer was already there.

And mom was too.

Mom was still working on a few things in the living room but it looks like it wasn't going to take her that long, since her intern wasn't here.

Mom sensed us in the living room with her and she smiled at us.

"Oh, hi. What did you kiddos think of Beckett?" Mom asked.

"I don't know, I barely know the guy" I shrugged.

"I don't think anything yet" Spencer said.

"You'll both like him. He's smart" Mom smiled.

Well, he's not a bad person that's for sure

"Did either of you talk to Hanna?" Mom asked.

"Yeah, she's with her dad" Spencer said.

"What's gonna happen to her mom?" I asked, crossing my arms over my chest.

"They'll move her to the state facility tomorrow, which is excessive and interferes with my ability to mount a defense, and I'll keep after judge Reilly until she agrees to bail" Mom explained.

I sighed and shook my head, feeling incredibly bad for Hanna and Ms. Marin.

Ms. Marin didn't kill Wilden, no matter how much of an asshole he was, and she doesn't deserve to be in jail let alone be transferred.

And Hanna doesn't deserve to lose her mother this way.

"Meanwhile, she stays in a cell?" Spencer asked.

"Yeah" Mom nodded.

"This sucks" I muttered, sitting down on the couch from across mom.

Mom nodded as she looked back at her work while Spencer remained standing and silent.

Only a few seconds passed before Spencer took something out and dropped it onto the table.

I looked at my twin with a raised eyebrow while mom looked at the thing Spencer dropped and cursed under her breath.

"Oh, I should have warned Beckett about you" Mom sighed.

"Do you know what's in there?" Spencer asked.

"They're trying to choke us with Wilden material. Most of it's useless" Mom told her.

"That is not useless. That is about Wilden and Radley and Toby's mom" Spencer told her.

"Wait what?" I asked, sitting up straight.

What does Wilden have to do with Radley let alone Toby's mom?

Spencer nodded and we both looked at mom and saw her eyes widen in shock at what Spencer just said.

Mom quickly grabbed the file and opened it so she could carefully read what was inside.

"Wilden was at Radley the night that Toby's mom died, and what he wrote in his notes doesn't match the official report. Somebody paid him off to lie about the facts" Spencer explained.

I was taken aback by all of that.

I know that Wilden was a pig and did tons of dirty work but did he really cover up the death of Toby's mother?

Did someone really pay him off to lie about what happened to Toby's mom?

Mom sighed and shook her head as she set the paper down.

"It's not relevant" Mom told her.

"Not relevant?!" Spencer and I yelled in unison.

"Wilden was crooked, he was always crooked" Spencer told her.

"That piece of shit was a pig, he always has been" I added.

"Ethan, language. And Spencer, you're done with Radley. Be grateful for that" Mom said.

Spencer shook her head as she slowly sat down next to me.

"Mom, Toby thinks his mother killed herself. And this links what happened out there with Wilden" Spencer told her.

"Honey, nothing we do or say is gonna bring back Toby's mother" Mom reminded her.

Spencer said nothing at that, her lips just formed into a frown.

While I remained silent and fiddled with my fingers, not wanting to admit that mom was right about that.

No matter what we say, no matter what we do, none of it is going to bring back Toby's mother.

"If you and your brother want to help Toby, help him move on" Mom softly said.

But that was something I did, or at least tried, when him and I were still friends.

That was something I have been doing because I know how much Toby loved his mother and I know how much her death affected him.

All of a sudden we hear a phone ring and we turn to see it was mom's.

Mom sighed and grabbed her phone and accepted the call.

"Yes?" Mom asked, putting her phone to her ear.

Spencer sighed and shook her head while I sighed and ran a hand through my hair.

"No I haven't. What do you mean?" Mom asked, furrowing her eyebrows together.

Spencer and I remained silent as mom continued talking to whoever was on the phone.

"When did this happen?" Mom asked, shock lacing her tone.

This made my sister and I look at her in confusion and she looked at us.

"Alright, I'll come right down there" Mom nodded.

She hung up the phone and stared at her phone for a few seconds before looking at Spencer and I.

"Mona Vanderwaal is at the police station" Mom told us.

Spencer looked at her in confusion and I did too.

What the hell is Mona doing at the police station? Did she do something or did something happen?

"She just walked in and confessed to killing Wilden" Mom revealed.

This made mine and Spencer's eyes widen in shock and I could feel my jaw dropping all the way to the ground.

What the hell is she talking about?

What does she mean Mona just confessed to killing Wilden?!

At The Police Station

After mom dropped that huge bomb on us she told us she was heading to the police station and if we wanted to go with her we had to get ready soon.

Spencer and I didn't waste a second in getting ourselves ready as well as messaging the girls about what happened.

Mom, Spencer and I got in the car and drove off.

It didn't take us that long to arrive at the police station.

And when we got there we met up with Emily and together the four of us entered the station.

Hanna and Aria arrived just after we did and they weren't alone, Caleb and Jake were with them too.

We all stopped at the front desk with mom talking to the police officer standing behind the desk to ask about any new information.

While she was doing that the girls and I stood together and looked into the glass window of a nearby interrogation room.

The room that Mona was currently in with two other detectives.

One of the detectives closed the door while another began to close the blinds.

Just before the blinds could be fully closed Mona stared straight at the girls and I.

A smirk appeared on her face before the blinds were fully closed.
