Chapter 31
"Good morning Charlotte!"
Zach stood with his arms folded, a leg kicked back against the parking garage wall. He was dressed nicely in a fitted button up with the sleeves slightly rolled as well as flattering khaki pants, over the top of leather loafers. Charlotte didn't expect to see him yet, she figured he would be down in his office, waiting.
"Morning," she replied, her eyes shining in the sun that filtered through the garage.
Zach was a good looking man, though older and a lot less fit than Liam. She loved his demeanor for one thing, compared to the latter. He was nice and never tried to get on her nerves.
"You ok? You look a bit worried, perhaps?"
Pushing the elevator button, he beckoned for her to walk inside in front of him. Once the doors closed, Charlotte finally spoke.
"Have you ever seen secret invisible craft that use the hidden runway?"
Zach coughed, swallowing. Fear flowed through his veins. This was not the place to talk about this topic. They were listening.
"Let's talk in my office. Better yet, we can take a walk."
Looking at his face, Charlotte realized Zach was scared. His bosses must not want this topic to be brought up. And more so, his reaction signaled to her that he was privy to it.
"Have a good drive in? Not too much traffic?" he asked, deflecting.
Noticing his eyes shift to the corner of the elevator then dart back to her face, she knew that he was telling her silently that they were indeed being watched. Which didn't surprise her. She knew that was going on everywhere she went. But the level of actual danger was unknown.
"Not too much, no. Denver isn't anything like L.A. is."
He chuckled as they exited on the ground floor, "I would think not."
Charlotte followed as Zach led her towards the set of administration offices. But instead of stopping, they kept walking, out of the long hallway into the main airport terminal. The noise and smells hit her senses all at once as they joined in the crowded space. Zach reached back briefly and touched her fingertips lightly with his. A jolt of electricity shot through her arm at the contact. She focused on the fear instead of the touch so as to 'turn off' any attraction feelings she might be sending out.
He is merely making sure I am behind him, following.
Winding through the lines of weary and impatient families, they finally made it to the junction of security and the terminals. Zach led her past the checkpoint with a flick of his badge. They came up to the familiar creepy painting that he had originally shown her on the first visit to DIA. Only this time, he walked to the roped off area and pushed into a hidden door in the wall. Once inside a secret hallway beyond, he exhaled, then locked the door behind them.
"Where are we?" Charlotte asked softly.
"A hidden staff area, as you saw. It 's not a working area, dead space really. But there are a few vacant offices in here. We can talk in one."
Leading them to a door, Zach opened it and turned on the light, bathing the small room in a florescent glow. Shutting and locking this door as well, they surveyed the room. There was a desk and a few chairs so they each sat in one, facing each other.
"I don't want you to worry Charlotte. I really don't."
She sighed, "I keep hearing that from everyone. Josh, Liam.."
"I know. But we mean it. And I especially do," he said, his eyes soft with concern. "I am dedicated to watching you. To being your protector. From my own organization if it comes to it. Fuck it. You should know that."
"From your own organization? They want to harm me?"
Zach knew he was about to tread into dangerous territory, one that he couldn't exactly come back from. But he had to tell her. Enough was enough.
"I am still an officer in the Air Force. Active Duty."
Charlottes eyes widened.
"You are active duty? But why do they have you working as a glorified HR person in the airport?"
"The Air Force lent me to the organization I work for. They don't know everything though. Only part of the truth."
Carefully, Charlotte broached the biggest question.
"What is the end state of who you work for?"
"To get humans out into space."
Hairs pricked on the back of Charlotte's neck at the words Zach spoke. It didn't feel like attempts to colonize Mars. Rather, something else.
"What do you mean by get out into space?"
Zach looked directly at Charlotte with a steely gaze.
"I mean, we take people against their will, abduct if you want to use alien lingo, and then bring them to space."
Chills hit her arms as she took the scenario in. They were abducting people. How could Zach work for such an entity?
"Why?!"
"I can't tell you anything further about it. I don't want you to get deeper in the hole Charlotte. I really don't. In fact, I want to get you out of Denver, and find you a nice regular job to do. Ditch the podcast thing and don't look back. I want to help..."
"Woah, you want me to quit my podcast? Leave Denver? How much danger am I actually in?"
"Your life is at risk. I thought you understood that. You are digging around in things you had nothing to do with. And now we know that you are part of the stones, that they are a part of you. It's about to boil down to one thing."
"What is that?"
Zach stood and walked closer to Charlotte, his hands casually in his pockets, portraying a handsome businessman to a 't'.
"If you can learn to suppress your powers, and fast."
Silence settled between the pair as they each contemplated what the next step was. Afraid for the others safety.
"I can try. If that is what will keep you safe Zach," Charlotte finally whispered.
Reaching out for her hand, he intertwined his fingers in hers, pulling her up so she was a mere inch away from his body. Looking up into his eyes, Charlotte kept ahold of the fear and suppressed any other thoughts, so as to not attract him. But it was in vain, for Zach was already in love. He had been since he first laid eyes on the redhead before him.
"Char.."
Bending his head down as Liam had, his lips captured hers. She let him kiss her, aware that this was a very bad complication, and one she had not intended to have while here conducting research. She liked Zach and knew he liked her too, but this was again, unexpected. Running a hand softly into her hair, he pulled her taught to him as he explored her mouth. She groaned a little as his kissing skills surprised.
But something was off in the air and they both sensed it. Pulling back just as suddenly as he started, Zach put a finger up to his lips. A sound could be heard in the hallway. Moving to the door, Zach softly listened then slowly unlocked it.
"Done talking yet?" a familiar voice called out.
Charlottes pulse raced; it was Liam.
Zach opened the door and let his co worker in. Liam's hazel eyes took in Charlottes wide blue ones. He had no idea what they were talking about as this room was soundproof, but he knew Zach was up to no good. He let his hand brush against Charlotte's as he moved past. Her skin prickled at the touch, longing for more suddenly.
"Why come in here Zach?" Liam asked amusingly, with a hint of edge to his tone.
"We had to talk, and I've told her a few things.."
Choosing to interrupt what felt like an impending fight, Charlotte spoke, "Actually, I got some evidence last night in emails from listeners. They sent me pictures of a huge aircraft that was translucent. Near DIA. Near the borders of the airport and a few miles out as well. There are dozens of them."
"And..?" Liam asked her quietly.
"Zach shared that your organization is taking people, taking them to space. That's all he said."
Liam's head whipped to Zach only to be met by a mirrored expression.
"She had to know Liam. If I didn't tell her she would keep digging. And you know what they could lead to."
Charlotte knew the unspoken words. They implied that she could get offed or killed.
"I understand what is going to happen now. I know I am being run out of Denver."
"Run out? Who told you that?" Liam asked angrily.
Her eyes softened and Charlotte concentrated on Liam's lips. And how soft they felt when he had kissed her. How much she wanted him to do it.
"Stop making me feel desire Char," he whispered.
"I can't have you two ripping each other apart," she whispered back.
Refocusing her attention back to the fact that people were being kidnapped, Charlotte looked at Zach. His expression was one of sorrow, and pain. She knew that he suspected Liam and her had something on the side, and his suspicions were just proven correct.
"You don't need to leave Denver. Our organization is tasked to keep you safe.."
'For now Liam. For now. She should go." Zach stated.
"I don't want to go though. I didn't get the chance to say that to you Zach. I understand you are concerned for my safety but there has to be another way."
"There is another way. We help you close out your podcast. In a manner that makes sense to the public, the people listening to your podcast. Then you can go," Liam said.
"The Rosicrucian's will take her then," Zach argued.
"They won't."
Before any more arguing could take place, Charlotte's cell rang. She took it out of her purse and glanced at the name on the screen.
Marcus.
