Chapter 26
Josh stared as he opened the coffee shop door. Charlotte's shoulder gleamed in the sun. She wore a tank top that flowed in the breeze over the top of her jeans. It was distracting. Righting his shirt, he followed her inside. A table that was perfect and in the back of the room called out to him.
"Let's go back there," he motioned to Charlotte.
She nodded and walked casually to the tucked away spot. No one would listen in over here, which Josh knew was important for some reason. He could sense her tension. Even through her friendly demeanor.
"Thank you for meeting me. I feel bad texting you last minute."
"No worries at all, I was out on a walk anyways. What's on your mind?"
Charlotte glanced around the coffee shop before deciding that they were safe to talk.
"You told me about the buses that morning we first met. I don't know how you knew but you did. And I can't say how I know but....I know what is hiding under the airport."
Josh could feel her heart rate speeding up and taste the fear running through her veins. He gently reached forward and placed his hand over top of hers. With concentrated effort, he began to calm her down.
"Yes, I remember. What happened when you saw it?"
Her eyes met his and softened. He could tell he had effectively brought her to a calmer state. Slowly removing his hand, he relaxed in his chair.
"I found out about the runways. And I need to know more."
Goosebumps formed on the back of Josh's neck at the mention of the runways.
How did she find out about those? Already?
Not wanting to alarm her and have to calm her again, Josh kept his face neutral. He needed to pick his words carefully.
"I know about the runways, remember when I told you about them? I saw you looking at a map?"
Charlotte's face registered what he was saying.
"Do you know what lands there? What things we can't see?"
Josh studied her eyes and read into her mind, before he dared speak. This was serious, and she could be in danger if she spoke about it, that much he knew.
"I do. But we can't talk about it Char.."
Nodding, she reached out for his hand. With tenderness, he grasped her fingers and gave her a soft squeeze.
"What organization do you belong to?" she quietly asked.
"I can't tell you that. But we are trying to help you."
"You genuinely cannot hint? Even a little?"
Josh stared into her blue eyes, getting lost in the depths. He couldn't tell her. It wasn't the time.
"No, I can't. But we are here to help you Charlotte, that you have to believe. To keep you safe."
Charlotte sighed, moving her hands into her lap.
"To help me, keep me safe. I am being told the same thing by everyone it seems. Safe from what though?"
Josh lowered his voice as the waitress came towards them.
"From the organization you are looking for. They are real. Trust me."
"What can I get you both?" the waitress asked, pulling out a pad of paper.
"Two coffees to go. And a muffin, strawberry," Josh said.
As the waitress left, Charlotte grinned.
"I love strawberry muffins."
"I know."
A comfortable silence settled between the two. Charlotte wanted to say more, but she didn't. Josh obviously knew more about her than she had realized. Her mind raced with thoughts of what group he might belong to. She ticked off each name.
The illuminati. The Rosicrucian's. The Freemasons. The New World Order.
None seemed to fit him though, no matter how hard she tried.
"Here you are."
The waitress returned quickly with to-go coffee cups and a paper bag containing Charlotte's muffin. Josh handed over a twenty dollar bill and stood, motioning for Charlotte to do so also.
Standing, she pushed in her chair, "I think I am going to do my podcast in a new location later on."
They began to walk out and as they did, Josh put his hand on the small of Charlotte's back. Partly to reassure her and partly to give her more energy. Once they left the coffee shop, Charlotte felt much lighter, and happier even.
"Do you know Chessman Park?" she asked Josh.
The sun hit her hair as they began to walk on the sidewalk, captivating Josh.
"The park?" she asked again, turning to look at him.
"Chessman Park, yes. Its big. A few blocks over. What about it?"
"I think I want to do my podcast there."
Coming up to Charlotte's hotel, both slowed the pace.
"What time are thinking of doing it today?"
"In about an hour actually. I don't want to be there at night."
"I think it's a good idea. But you shouldn't go alone, what if I provide security for you of sorts? I wouldn't bother you.."
"I like that idea," she interrupted.
Josh smiled at Charlotte and they both walked inside her hotel.
"I'll wait down here for you. Take your time."
Nodding, she turned to the elevators, her thoughts fully concentrated on the task at hand. She wanted to bring her microphone setup and the laptop of course, but also the map of the runways again. An idea popped up and it began to take on a life of it's own.
"That's it!" she exclaimed, stepping in and pushing the floor button.
As it rose upwards, her mind swirled. Hope had taken root and erased all the anxiety. Now she had formulated a different plan, one that she hoped would get more information. Charlotte knew that she couldn't openly talk about what she had seen with Liam under the airport, but she could let others do it.
The elevator doors opened, and Charlotte ran right into the same tall man she had run into before, down in the lobby. Instead of feeling scared or worried though, she smiled.
"I'm sorry," the man said, touching her shoulders briefly with his hands.
"Didn't see you there," Charlotte replied, looking the man in the eyes.
More warmth radiated from her chest as she grinned.
"Have a good rest of your day," he softly said, stepping aside so Charlotte could leave the confines of the elevator.
With the push of a button, the doors shut. She was once again alone. Walking to her room door, she fobbed her way in and got to quick work gathering up her goods for the podcast. Packing it all into her messenger bag, she took a quick glance around the room. Satisfied that everything was where it should be, she left and made her way down to Josh. He was still waiting in the lobby as he said he would be.
"Ready?" he asked.
"Yep!"
A glow emanated from her face and entire being. Josh swallowed and checked his cell phone. It was all going as planned. And Charlotte was at full capacity for their inflow of well-being.
"I am so excited for the episode tonight...my listeners are going to play a huge role; I just know it."
Her excitement palpable, she reached over and took Josh's fingers into her own as they walked away from the hotel and towards the parks direction. At the unexpected contact, he groaned, lacing his fingers with hers.
"Got everything you need?"
"Oh yes, I do. Just need to get there and link in."
"I'm glad you are excited. I have to admit, I am too. I have never watched someone doing a podcast. And it's going live right?"
Charlotte giggled and squeezed his hand.
"Yep. 100% live."
They crossed a large road then paralleled another on the sidewalk as the park came into view. Knowing instinctively where the best spot was, Charlotte led them to a large tree with plenty of shade. No one else was around, oddly.
"Here. This is the spot."
Josh let her hand go so he could help with setting things up.
"It's where I would have chosen too."
As she took out the laptop and portable speaker and lighting, the warmth from inside the hotel that took residence in her chest began to fade. In it's place, a sense of calm remained. It was nice, and she didn't want the feeling to ever end.
"I think I've got what I need.."
Stepping back, she surveyed the backdrop that would be seen in the video feed. It was different form the hotel room but had a lot of appeal. This way, people would know she was in Denver. Somehow, that was important to this podcast episode.
"I'll be over there, so I don't bother you," Josh said, indicating towards a bench nearby.
Charlotte nodded and sat down, pulling up the appropriate screens and readying herself to go live on camera. Breathing in then out, she hit the buttons.
"Welcome back to The Denver Chronicles podcast. I have been busy at work, chasing leads left and right. Some, if not most, I can't talk about on the air. Not yet. But I do have a personal request for all of you."
Holding up the map that Liam had given her, she looked into the camera.
"Can you send me any information you might know of the invisible runways at DIA? I am in urgent need of anything that is real. Pictures of it or of the unmarked buses and especially any convoys that anyone might have seen or spotted within twenty miles outside of the base. Email them to me as soon as possible, if you can."
Josh watched the animation that radiated off of his charge. She was very into her job, that much was apparent. And he marveled at how easy it had been to light the spark this afternoon. Especially given the amount of stress she was under. As Charlotte wrapped up the very quick episode, he noticed a man approaching from the left out of the corner of his eye.
Turning, he locked eyes with him.
An Egyptian.
