Chapter 11
Liam.
Charlotte drummed her fingers against her temples. It was lightly raining outside. She watched the beads of water slip down the glass in a rhythmic manner. The handsome head of security for DIA was still stuck in her head, but she wasn't sure why. It was beyond a physical attraction. Her soul felt restless.
"Charlotte?"
She glanced up. It was Josh.
"Are you ok?" He asked, worry knitted in his voice.
"Yeah. Yeah I'm good. How are you?"
He frowned and sat across from her. He seemed a bit on edge.
"You're still being followed. Are you being careful?"
"I know. I'm sure every podcaster or reporter looking for answers at the airport is. Or was." She chuckled. "I'm being careful, nothing has happened to me."
His eyes met hers and she felt a warmth in her chest. Just like at the hotel, the night someone had come into her room.
"What are you saying Josh?" She whispered.
He blinked and shook his head. The warmth left.
"Nothing serious. I've just seen the people at the airport do this before, to others, like you said. You're here alone and I don't want anything to happen to you."
He stood up and rubbed the back of his neck. Charlotte could sense he wanted to say much more but held back. She wasn't scared though, oddly enough. She felt invigorated.
"Thank you for caring. I really appreciate it."
He smiled. "What can I get you for breakfast? Same coffee?"
"Yes please, plain black. And surprise me. I trust you."
He smiled again and left her to ponder everything. Charlotte wondered if she was losing her mind slightly. Josh was so nice, right from the first moment she met him. Was he a part of the airport New World Order?
He might be the one following me. He was at the hotel the other night when the fire broke out.
But the feeling she got whenever she was near him conflicted with that. Not wanting to ruminate anymore on this, she brought her thoughts back to Liam. It made zero sense that he would have come down to carry boxes out for Zach. He was the head of security. Getting lower-level guards to help was more logical. No, she thought he was really there to assess her. And boy did he. She squirmed in her seat, remembering how her body had responded to his direct look. The air was magnetic between the two and it was unlike anything she had ever experienced before.
What is it with this airport?
That was the focus of her mind. It was undoubtedly holding secrets. She needed to get ahold of an employee badge so she could go back underground, but that was going to be hard to do. Every single employee she had seen so far had theirs around their necks, on a lanyard. Not exactly easy to steal. She decided to visit the airport again tomorrow, under the guise of photo taking for the online portion of her podcast. Zach wouldn't question that.
"Here you go. . I wasn't sure if you liked tomatoes, but we have a special British breakfast this week."
Josh placed a plate in front of her. It had baked beans, two eggs sunny side up, toast, tomato slices and mushrooms plus two small black medallions.
"What are.."
"Black pudding. Basically, it's blood sausages. They are good though, I promise!"
She arched an eyebrow and grinned. England was one place she'd never been to in all her travels researching for films. Thought she'd always wanted to go. Josh walked back to the kitchen to grab other plates for patrons in the cafe. As he brought a heavy tray out, his sleeve hitched up over his flexing bicep. Charlotte took a bite of egg and watched him. A tiny tattoo was visible, one she had seen before. The blue multipoint star.
Nearly choking on the egg, she took a drink of the water glass on the table in front of her. Josh was part of it. How could he not be? His sleeve slid back down as he lowered the tray. This was disheartening to Charlotte. She really did like Josh. He finished dolling out the food and gave the tray to another barista.
"Can I give you another tip?"
He slid into a chair in front of her, his voice low. Charlotte figured she might as well hear anything he had to say. Clues were clues.
"Sure."
"Besides the buses, there are invisible runways."
"What? Did you say invis. ."
"Invisible runways." He softly said, tapping his hand on the table before standing up. "You'll want to look into those too, trust me."
"Is that real?"
She could barely believe what he was implying.
"Yes. Just be careful who you talk to. Ok?"
Nodding, he left her once again to keep to his cafe duties. Though by this point, she doubted he held the profession of barista. He had to be much more. She finished picking through her breakfast but didn't feel particularly hungry anymore. Instead, she wanted to return to her hotel room and begin researching. Her mind was bursting with thoughts and directions to take.
Once done, she quickly paid her bill but didn't see Josh to say goodbye. He always seemed to disappear at exactly this time in her cafe dining experience.
He can't be part of them. . can he?
Wanting for nothing more than the two handsome men thrust into her reality to be good, she decided to concentrate her focus for the rest of the day on digging up everything she could relating to the buses and runways. Zach's blueprint gift was spread on the desk in her room, next to the very different aerial shots. The official first podcast episode was going live tonight. She had to get everything together.
Bump.
A grumpy looking woman ran her shoulder smack dab into Charlottes chest. She'd just entered the hotel lobby and the woman came out of nowhere.
"You should be careful. ." The woman said.
Charlotte felt a chill run down her spine and turned to say something to her but when she did, the woman was gone. She looked around but only saw a few families with small kids and one lone worker behind the reception area. Today is odd she thought. Finding out that Josh had a tattoo that matched the one she saw underground on the first tour of the airport was mind altering.
She got into the elevator and closed her eyes, as she leaned against the wall. The vibrations jogged her memory. Some people believed in Egypt that the blue star was a symbol from ancient civilizations, namely Mesopotamia. Could there be an illuminati connection? It seemed to be that way, but she would need to write everything down. Opening her eyes at the same time the doors did, she resolved to make a call that she never thought she'd have to make. To Marcus.
Safely in her room, she sat on the bed and dialed. Her emotions were all over the place. She hoped his new wife wouldn't mind her calling.
"Charlotte? Are you ok?"
He answered, this was good.
"Hey, yes. I'm good. Do you remember the man we talked to in Egypt that told us about the blue multi-pointed stars we found in Cairo?"
"Jesus, I'm glad you're ok. I saw your name on the screen and about had a fucking heart attack!"
A brief silence settled over the line. Charlotte hadn't expected him to react so emotionally. It gave her a reminder of what once was, when they had been together.
"I didn't mean to scare you. I just couldn't remember what the name of the man was, and I need to try and get in contact with him."
"Charlotte, what's going on there? Are you in any trouble? Why the blue star, I thought you were researching what is underneath the Denver Airport?"
"I am. I am, I just need to figure some things out. There is more going on here than you can imagine."
"His name was Hussain Hamarti. I remember because of the double 'h's'. But Charlotte, how are you going to find him? Are you leaving Denver?"
She paused for a moment to try to collect her thoughts. How much of this she wanted to share was still up in the air. The last thing she needed was to have him get entangled, or worse, come out here. Since they broke up, she found staying away from him in physical proximity to the be the best thing.
"I will just use contacts via Skype, I can't fly there, no. Honestly I am trying to connect a symbol I saw while on an underground tour. I know I've seen it before, when we were in Egypt. There is some group at work here Marcus. It's big and I am going to find out what."
Crap. Now he is going to worry. Or try and get involved.
"Do you really think there is something under the airport?"
"Yes. I just need to find out who is behind it."
What he said next shocked her. She had expected a different reaction.
"Well, be careful. If it's the illuminate, you know you're being followed."
"I am. No need to worry. Thanks for the name."
She almost hung up but was stopped by his voice.
"Charlotte, I listened to your first episode. It was good."
