Chapter 2- Serena

A soft beeping sound from my watch startled me. I picked it up and stared at the time. 11: 30 pm. I let out a sigh, then slid off my couch and turned off the T.V. Is it completely impossible for the Company to let me sleep?

Walking out of my new house, I jumped into my blue Lotus car, sat down in the soft black leather seats, and drove downtown. I set my watch down, and followed the 3D grid map, which glowed green, invisible to ordinary eyes, of course. A beeping noise alerted me of a nearby demon.

"Watch, identify the demon." I demanded, driving through the downtown area, lights streaking by.

"It is a Forensiaco, or Water Demon." The watch said in a male computerized voice.

"Where is it, and what is it doing?" I asked with a yawn.

"It is at a water treatment plant, and it is taking the water and contaminating it."

"Wonderful, we got ourselves a troublemaker, which means we can take it out."

"Woohoo!!!!" I yelled out the window, flooring the gas pedal, and speeding towards the destination. "There is no demon species by the name of 'WOOHOO'."

I sighed, "I know, its an expression, you would not understand."

"I completely understand what a expression is, it is a-"

"I know!"

I screeched to a stop in front of the water treatment plant, which had a huge metal door, that had been torn open, jagged metal jutted up around the door, and part of the wall had been smashed, great, another mess for me to clean up.

A yellow sign pasted to the side of the door with a male model smiling and making a 'thumbs up' gesture read, 'RICK'S WATER CLEANING PLANT-YOU USE IT WE CLEAN IT!' What kind if catchphrase is that?!

Strapping my watch to my wrist, I jumped out of the car, locked it, and walked cautiously into the building. I slipped through a foggy array of maze-like hallways, using the watch for light and a map, until I reached the main chamber.

A giant creature stood there with light blue skin that was somewhat see-through, and when I looked through it, my vision blurred. It had no wings, for I knew that it did not need them. It could turn into a liquid substance and melt into the earth, thankfully we were standing on a metal floor.

A long, slender tail slowly moved from side to side like a cat as it stalked its prey, its water-like skin rippled as it moved. I stood square and boldly said, "I represent the Company, and you're under arrest for contaminating, or attempting to contaminate water used by other living creatures." The demon turned and said in a somewhat unclear voice, as if he was talking through water.

"Who will stop me, you."

"Unless you surrender, I will use deadly force."

"The great Lacylok will never surrender, especially to the likes of a puny. Human. Weakling." Then he turned, placed a blue hand into the water, and began to soak it up, growing larger.

I need to get him away from the water. "Guess you're just too scared!" I yelled trying to get his attention. "Wow, Lacylok I knew you were stupid, and non-superior, but I never would have guessed you to be a coward."

He turned toward me and said, "You're wasting my time, besides I will never surrender."

"Well, then I will give you three chances to surrender, but after that I have full authority to end your life." He let out a deep laugh that sounded like the ocean's ruffest waves. Then, snorting, he took a step forward with a lash of his tail.

"One." I warned. He took another step, his long blue claws scraping the iron floor. "Two." His long lizard-like tail swept across the floor, and he crouched, his eyes empty white pits. "Three." I said, "you're out."

Comonak Amonak I thought. Suddenly there was a flash of light, and a silver double-bladed sword with bright, glowing blue lines searing through it, appeared in my hands. I grabbed the smooth handle, with demon eyes and curved horns, separating Zenalac into Zen and Alac.

I stood in front of the giant demon, swords in both hands, readying myself. Roaring, the demon leaped at me, I easily sidestepped, slashing out my left hand in a clean fluid motion, scratching the side of the demons left leg. Water began to seep out of a deep slash.

Screeching the demon reeled around, snatching for me. His clawed hands only managed to grab air, as I quickly slid across the iron floor, but I had forgotten about his tail. Oops.

His tail caught me right as I stood, and wrapped around my leg. He lifted me upside-down and moved me in front of his face. I held tight to my swords, even as he shook me fiercely. I twisted Zen around and smashed the end of it onto Lacylok's face.

With a howl of pain he tossed me aside, and I twisted in the air, landing sliding back in a crouch. Slow breaths, slow your mind and focus. Steven's voice rang in my ears, just like my mentor always told me. Time passed in slow motion as I slipped into what was called Slow Time, a zen-like moment that Demon Hunters can go into during a fight. I used the momentum of landing to run forward, grabbing Zen and Alac, I connected the blades, and leaped up pushing hard against the iron floor.

I landed on the Water Demon's back, grabbed one of his horns with my free arm, I kicked off of his slow moving arm as he reached for me, and exiting Slow Time I put my face in front of his and smirked, saying, "Who's the weakling now?", and forced Zenalac through his chest. He let out a roar of pain and staggered backwards.

Comonak Amonak I thought, and the double bladed sword disappeared into thin air. Lacylok's body dissolved, and Mist drifted up from the ground. Uh-oh. I thought, remembering that I was on top of Lacylok when he dissolved, then I gracefully fell and landed on my back instead of my feet. I grunted and stood, brushing off my damp clothes.

I captured the Mist as it rolled around the room, then used my watch to clean the water, replace it into the water plant, and wipe the security cameras. Glancing at the time I realized that it was only one in the morning, so, as I walked back toward the car I decided to visit another demon, before going to the Company.

"Hmm, I am in a poltergeist type of mood" I murmured opening the entrance door and walked toward my car. "Watch, track down a nearby poltergeist."

"Yes ma'am, but don't you think that you should stop talking to yourself?"

"Aww shut up, just find a poltergeist thats causing trouble."

"There is a poltergeist on 204 Rose Drive that is messing with household objects."

"Are any people there?"

"Yes, one person, ma'am."

"Then lets go find us a poltergeist."

I jumped back to the lotus, slipped into the seat, ignited the engine, opened the blackened bulletproof windows, and blasted pop music into the night air.

Another sports car, a Ferrari that was red with white stripes, pulled up next to me, and opened their window. Rap music blasted from within the car. The guy driving had pale skin, and was wearing huge dark sunglasses. He obnoxiously revved his engine, ready for a race.

"You want to race?" I yelled, putting on my own dark sunglasses, "Lets race."I said, revving the engine of my lotus. "Go!" I yelled, not pressing the gas. The other driver sped ahead, and I laughed to myself, "I'll give him a head start."

"Ma'am, you're talking to yourself again."

"Shut up."

Then I pressed down the gas, and sped foreword. Of all things the guy in the other sportscar was expecting, he was not ready to see the high-tech speed of my vehicle, which was made to outrun most demons.

The other driver's face lit up with confusion as I passed him, his face a complete mask of surprise and his sunglasses fell off, revealing green eyes that were opened wide.

His jaw hung open as I thrust my head up and said, "Sup", Then I floored it and shot away from him at 310 miles per hour, laughing into the night.

When I reached the wooden-and-glass house with the poltergeist, I summoned Zen and Alac. I cautiously approached the orange door, and flinched as I heard a girl scream.

Adrenaline flowed through my blood. "Hello?" I called. No answer. "I am not a burglar, I'm here to help with your ghost problem." I knocked on the door. Again, no answer.

I turned the knob and to my surprise it opened. The house was a mess, furniture lay upside down, glass was broken, and a girl was laying on the ground.

Gripping Zen and Alac tighter, I took a step forward. I touched the girl's face and realized that she was not hurt, just out cold.

"Watch, how did she pass out?"

"She has no bruises, cuts, or injuries of any kind, I estimate that she saw the poltergeist, screamed, and passed out." It said after scanning her. "I should also alert you that I am almost out of power."

"Noted." I acknowledged, moving the girl out of harms way.

"Poltergeist, I know you're here, show yourself!" For a few heartbeats nothing happened.

"Show yourself!" I demanded. This time a large figure rose from the floor, with hollow blue eyes and a misty form. The poltergeist laughed and said in a hollow, metallic voice, "Human, I will give you one chance to run, if you don't I will kill you."

That made me laugh. "If you have not noticed my scent, I'm a Hunter, and it is probably unwise to speak to a girl carrying swords like that. I work for the Company, either you surrender, and go to jail, or I'll kick your face so hard you'll explode." I pointed Zen and Alac forward to prove my point.

"Never!" Screamed the demon. The ghost-like figure leaped forward, and disappeared into the floor in front of me. Hah, typical. Cautiously I crept forward. My senses flared a warning as a piece of furniture flew right at me, slamming into my stomach, and landing on top of me.

"Ouch, I think you broke my rib." I snarled. Anger began to swell up inside me, followed by annoyance. I flung the furniture off my body, ignoring the pain in my side, and leaped at the surprised ghost. "I've had enough of this, and now to top it off you've made me mad!" I yelled, furious.

As I flew toward the ghost, I quickly dashed to the side of it, slashed its figure with Zen, and smashed the end of Alac on top of its head. The ghost flung me back, and I flew toward the wall, spinning I pushed off the wooden wall with my feet, running toward the ghost.

I dodged a flying sofa and slid under a airborne marble table, then I jumped up, flipping over a chair, and slammed a foot into the poltergeist's face. The ghost screamed so loud that I covered my ears, and the windows shattered into billions of tiny pieces, then the noise died away and the poltergeist exploded like a popped balloon, "Told you." I said with shrug, then I captured the swirling mist in my watch.

Still ignoring my own pain, I crouched beside the woman on the floor. She looked like she was in her early twenties, and I could see her chest rising and falling at a safe pace. I picked her up, lay her in bed, and used my watch to rearrange the furniture. Then I checked for security cameras, finding none I walked toward the door.

As I left, I closed the door, and locked it, erasing any evidence of the demon. To the company. I thought, then I jumped into my car and drove to one of the Company's secret entrance.

At the entrance of the Company there was a small scanner, where I scanned my watch. The brick wall of the building opened to reveal a lit metal staircase.

As soon as I passed into the building, the wall sealed up again with a thump. At the bottom of the stairs a guy with black hair and tan skin named, Chris Blackmen waited there, Chris is sort of my agent, he takes care of getting me jobs, and helps set me up with cool gadgets, but he never leaves the Company building.

"Hello, Serena, how much Mist do you have?" Chris cooed.

"I have two, one Poltergeist, and one Water Demon."

"Wonderfull." He replied. I winced as the pain in my ribs intensified, and Chris glanced at me. "Lets take you to the medical wing, before we sell the Mist." I did not argue, nobody argues with the Company.

A pretty girl with brown hair, and grey eyes said, "Hello, my name is Kate, and I will be your nurse today, follow me to your examination machine." I walked behind her, with Chris at my side, passing machines and agents.

Finally we stopped in front of a white flat table, and Kate motioned for me to lay down. I lay on the table, and waited as the top of the machine closed around me, I breathed the oxygen, as a green scanner wiped across my body.

I heard Kate's voice say, "You have two broken ribs, prepare for healing procedure." I relaxed my body and closed my eyes as the machine mended my broken bones with a red scanner. I forced myself not to tense up when the searing pain arrived. If I tense up, it will hurt more. I told myself, then the scanner turned green, and with click the machine opened.

I sat up, and turned on the table, knowing what was next. "Ok, I need you to inhale, exhale, then move your upper body, to make sure everything is working functionally." Kate said. I took in a deep breath, and let it slowly out with no pain, then I moved from side to side, and again there was no pain.

"All better." Said Kate, with a cartoonish smile.

"Alright Serena lets go to the buyers section and see if we can fetch a high price." Chris said as we walked into the buyers section to sell the Mist I had collected.

A girl with blonde hair, blue eyes, and pale skin named Laura Trist was sitting in the office at a polished wooden desk, covered in papers and pens. She looked up from her paper, and set down her pen, smiling, "Hello Serena, what do you have for us today?"

"Hello ma'am, I have Water Demon, and Poltergeist Mist."

"Perfect, I will give you $300 for the Water Demon, and $263 for the Poltergeist." She said.

"Hmm, how about $400 for the Water Demon, plus the time and power I wasted cleaning and replacing the intoxicated water, and $350 for the Poltergeist, for protecting the woman, and repairing the house. After all that, I'm going to have to charge my watch for hours." I bargained.

"I will give you $350 for the Water Demon, and $300 for the Poltergeist." Laura said.

"Well, you see..." I began, beginning to think of how I could get a better deal with a bargain.

As I slid into my car, congratulating the fact that I had been able to bargain $500 for the Water Demon and $420 for the Poltergeist, I began to yawn as I drove quickly back to the neighborhood. Then I pulled into my driveway, locked my blue Lotus, closed the garage and walked into my stone house. Looking out the window I saw the boy Bailey had been talking about, John.

His eyes were sunken and dull as he walked into his house holding white bags from the grocery store, who shops at two in the morning? Walking into the kitchen I plugged my watch into its cord to charge it, deciding I would look into this 'John' character later. I threw on my PJ's and jumped into my white king sized bed, buried myself in covers, and fell asleep.
