Ch. 7 Little Women
Elaine finished her meal and tea. She turns her gaze to Sebastian and smiles at him. " Thank you for the tea! It was sweet and yummy! I love it!" She stands up, causing the Butler to stare at her.
" I am going to the kitchen to tell Baldy that the food was yummy! I will see you later!" Elaine waves goodbye. She turns around and begins to run toward the kitchen.
Sebastian amusingly chuckled. He grabbed the tray and placed it on the cart. He walked out of the gazebo, following Elaine to the kitchen since he had to get Ciel's tray.
Elaine entered the kitchen and smiled when she saw Baldroy mopping the floor. " Baldy! Baldy! Baldy!" She called out, causing the Cook to look at her.
" Hey, Young Lady Phantomhive. What did you think of the meatloaf and mashed potatoes with gravy?" Baldroy asked, looking curious.
" I love it! Very yummy!" Elaine responded.
Baldroy's gaze softened. " I'm glad you enjoy my cooking." He rubbed his nose, getting bashful.
Elaine spotted dirty dishes in the sink. " Do you need help?" She asked while looking at Baldroy with doe-like sapphire blue eyes.
Baldroy turns his gaze to the dirty dishes in the sink. He looked back at Elaine and was about to say something, but he stopped when he saw Sebastian give him a look.
" Ah! No need! I can do these all by myself. Thank you, though." Baldroy awkwardly smiled while scratching his cheek with his finger.
" Okay!" Elaine nodded. " Do you know where Big Sis is at?" She asked, wanting to play with Mey-Rin.
Baldroy glanced at Sebastian.
" Mey-Rin should be at the Library," Sebastian spoke, causing Elaine to turn and smile at him.
Elaine beamed, looking excited to see the renovated Library. " Okay! I am going to the Library to play with Big Sis if Ciel needs me!" She turns and runs out of the kitchen.
Sebastian nodded, watching Elaine leave. He looked away and turned his gaze to Baldroy. " Make sure the dishes get clean." He spoke while placing Elaine's tray in the sink.
" Yes, Sir!" Baldroy saluted.
Sebastian grabbed Ciel's tray and walked out of the kitchen. He entered the living room and stopped when he saw Elaine look at the Phantomhive portrait with a sad gaze.
" Papa. Mummy." Elaine whispered, but Sebastian heard her. " Why did you have to go?" She asked with a frown. " It has been two years since you left me behind." She looked at Vincent and Rachel.
" I thought Ciel and Edie also left me. But, only one return." Elaine murmured while looking at Ciel and Edie.
" But! But! I will try my best to continue being happy. Auntie Angela always tells me that Papa and Mummy love it when I am happy. So, I will continue to look at the whole world with sunshine and rainbow!" Elaine closed her sapphire-blue eyes and smiled at the Phantomhive portrait.
' My Little Lady. You keep surprising me. You do not have to be happy all the time, and yet here you are trying to be happy for the sake of your loved ones.' Sebastian internally speaks, watching Elaine run up the stairs and disappear to the East Wing.
Sebastian walked up the stairs and walked in the opposite direction to Ciel's bedroom. He reached the room and knocked on the door, hearing his Young Master telling him to get inside.
Sebastian opened the door and stepped inside. He looked forward and saw Ciel sitting on his desk, looking through various paperwork.
" My Lord," Sebastian calls out, putting the tray on top of the paperwork, causing Ciel to look at the Butler with an annoyed gaze.
" You need to eat. It is good for your health." Sebastian merely speaks.
Ciel sighed. " Thank you for bringing my food to me." He grabbed the fork and began to eat his meal.
" We need to have a firm conversation." Sebastian saw Ciel raise an eyebrow. " It's regarding Young Lady Phantomhive." He grabbed the Young Master's attention.
" Is Elaine okay?" Ciel asked, looking concerned.
" Young Lady Phantomhive is okay. But, earlier, she had a traumatic moment in her bedroom." Sebastian remembered Elaine looking pale and her sparkly sapphire blue eyes dim and teary-eyed.
Ciel frowned, feeling horrible. " Aunt Angela told me what Elaine went through." He whispered, but Sebastian heard him. " She must have remembered what happened to Mum." He murmured.
" Ugh!" Ciel groaned. " I am such a horrible big brother! I thought she would have forgotten about that horrible day since she was only eight." He put his fork down and rubbed his face with his gloved hand in annoyance.
" You are not a horrible big brother," Sebastian reassured. " You wanted to preserve her childhood. But I suggest we hire an interior designer and renovate her bedroom so Young Lady Phantomhive would not have another attack. In the meantime, she can sleep with Me-." He saw Ciel glare at him darkly.
"-With Mey-Rin." Sebastian finished.
Ciel hummed, looking thoughtful. " As long as Mey-Rin does not mind." He nodded.
" I shall inform her." Sebastian bowed his head. " Have a lovely meal, My Lord. And I mean it when I said you need to eat." He turns around and walks out of Ciel's bedroom.
Ciel annoyingly rolled his ocean-blue eye. He grabs his fork and resumes eating his meal. His gaze saddened, feeling bummed that he caused Elaine to have a PTSD moment in her bedroom.
In the Library, Elaine was sitting on Mey-Rin's lap, reading a children's book called Little Women by Louisa May Alcott that came out twenty years ago in 1868.
So far, Elaine has enjoyed getting to know the main characters, the March Sisters. She noticed that each sister was different and unique.
Elaine admired that the story's protagonist, Jo March, was vocal about thinking for herself, took pride in shunning female manners and fashion, and was unlikely to succumb to society's pressures on women in her time. She noticed that one of Jo's notable traits was her determination. When Jo set her mind on something, it was tough to dissuade her from doing it.
Elaine felt sorrowful when the March sisters lost their beloved sister, Elizabeth March, since it made her think of her parents and Edie. Elizabeth suffered so much when she got sick from the Scarlet Fever. However, the young woman continued to be kind and sweet to those around her. She was also the glue that brought her whole family together.
Elaine didn't like Amy March that much. Amy gave Elaine a spoiled brat attitude throughout the story despite being an intelligent young lady. However, through many obstacles, Amy matured and found true love in someone she least expected.
And a character that grew on Elaine was Meg March. Despite wanting to be beautiful and wealthy, Meg became mature and understood that true worth did not lie in money. The eldest March sister learned to tolerate being poor and wholeheartedly appreciate the blessings she had in life and the genuinely admirable qualities of individuals.
A knock on the door grabbed Elaine and Mey-Rin's attention. They lifted their head and saw Sebastian entering the Library.
" Hello, Ladies. I do hope I did not interrupt your reading session." Sebastian speaks.
" It's okay! Mey-Rin taught me how to speed read through a book!" Elaine brightly smiled, looking at Sebastian in excitement.
Mey-Rin blushes, getting flustered when Sebastian smiles at her.
" I have marvelous news." Sebastian looks at Elaine. " My Lord does not mind Young Lady Phantomhive being in Mey-Rin's room for the night." He softly smiled.
Elaine and Mey-Rin looked at each other and smiled. " Yay! We get to party all night!" They cheered.
Sebastian amusingly chuckled at the two females' excitement.
" My Lord will also hire an interior designer to redecorate your bedroom. I do not know how long it will take. So, Young Lady Phantomhive. You are either welcome to stay in Mey-Rin's room or mine." Sebastian reassured.
" Okay!" Elaine nodded, excited to spend the night with Mey-Rin and get to know her big sister.
