Chapter Twelve

The blizzard was getting worse as I walked through the forest the best I could. I could recognize this general area from one of my visions. I continued walking when I felt a sharp pain in my side. I groaned and leaned on a nearby tree. I knew better than to move my cloak to look at it, it was too cold and I didn't want to expose my skin to the freezing temperature. I walked as fast as I could on my wobbly feet. I had to find him and I had to find him soon.

"Ryland." I yelled out but you could barely make it out over the howling wind and my chattering teeth.

I heard growling up ahead and sighed in frustration. I'm not in a good state to fight wolves. I gripped onto the closest tree and began to climb it. The bark against my frozen hands caused them to split open and bleed. I groaned in frustration but kept climbing knowing worse would happen if I stayed down there. I got to a fork in the tree and leaned against the trunk of the tree and took a deep breath. I heard the growling grow louder as the wolf was getting closer.

I slowly moved my eyes down to see a giant black wolf with an angry face walking by the tree sniffing the ground. Wait a minute.

"Ryland?" I breathed out. The wolf snapped its head up the tree and a look of relief washed over his face. He ran to the trunk and began clawing at it. I swung my legs over and gripped onto the trunk as I began to slowly climb down.

Ryland rubbed his head against my stomach as he directed with his head where he wanted to go. I followed next to him towards a cave. Once we sat down I looked around the cave to get a better idea of our surroundings. The cold was really starting to settle in as I couldn't stop shaking. Ryland walked away from the cave entrance and laid down leaning against me. The heat radiating off of his body began to warm me up.

"Ryland?" I asked. He glanced up at me with his curious eyes.

"Can you shift back?" He just shook his head and growled.

I ran my fingers through his fur in an attempt to calm him down. He snuggled back into my side. I felt myself start to doze off when my hand started shaking.

"Oh come on." I groaned as I felt the visions infiltrate my mind. Rogues were sprinting in the snow growling and nipping at each other as they ran. Some of them viciously snapping their jaws while drool seeped out of the sides of their mouths. Standing behind them all with a wicked smile was Cade. We locked eyes before my eyes snapped open. I saw a concerned Ryland staring into my eyes.

I leaned up and ran my fingers through my hair.

"We have to leave. They are catching up to us." I slowly stood up and began walking towards the entrance to the cave.

"Ryland, we have to go. Come on." He just whined and then starting growling.

"We don't have time for this." I walked out of the cave and began looking around trying to decided which way we should go. It was impossible to figure out which direction was which since the snow was still rapidly falling. All of a sudden I felt a strong force crash into my side. I winced in pain as I felt myself hit a tree. I wheezed when I landed in the freezing snow.

"Your not where I left you." I looked up to see his disgusting face smiling at me. I stood up slowly and got in a defensive position. He charged at me but I quickly dodged his attack, grabbing onto his wrist and twisting his wrist in the process. He groaned in pain before landing a kick to my abdomen.

I was about to hit him again when I was shoved far into the snow. I screamed before the snow was thrown over the gap I fell in. I could still breathe but I didn't know what to do. I couldn't get the snow off. I began breathing really heavily. Tight spaces were not my thing. I frantically scratched at the snow and tried to kick my legs but the snow wasn't powdery so it was hard to manipulate.

"Ryland!" I screamed. I didn't have much time left before I either run out of air or freeze to death.

I couldn't hear anything. This couldn't be the end. I kept kicking with my feet but it was proving to be a waste of my energy as nothing was changing. How deep in the snow was I?

Whatever pushed me down here wasn't by a person it was by magic.

I closed my eyes and tried to get my breathing under control. If I keep hyperventilating I'm going to run out of air fast. Suddenly I heard scratching coming from above me. Finally there was a gap in the snow and I could see Mom staring down at me.

"Oh my god." Shrieked mom. She raised her hands and I felt my body being lifted out. I was shaking uncontrollably from the cold.

"Mom?" I mumbled.

She wrapped her arms around me and I felt as though my body was being defrosted.

She let go of me and placed her hands on my shoulders checking me for any injuries.

"How did you find me?" I asked her still in shock as to how she showed up in the middle of a forest in the middle of literal no where.

"Portals have been opening up everywhere. Your Dad was examining it and I had, had enough with waiting. So I walked through it." She spoke like it was the most normal thing in the world.

"Portals?" I asked confused.

"Yes, portals. I'm not sure what they are from, but I have a few guesses." She said the last part quietly but I still picked up on it.

"Have you seen Ryland?" I asked her worried about him.

"No, the portal opened right over this area and I heard noises coming from down there." She spoked looking around at our surroundings.

"We have to find him, they did something to him and he isn't shifting back to his human form." I said walking in the direction of where the cave was.

"I can see if I can reverse anything they did, I can't promise I will be able to though." She frowned.

"There were a lot of wolves here. There was something else too, but I don't know what happened." I said to her as we hurried towards the cave.

"Ryland!" I called as we got closer to the cave.

I heard growls coming from a distance.

"Octavia go in the cave, he's in there, I'll deal with our visitors." I nodded knowing she is more than capable of defending herself.

I hurried inside and saw Ryland laying on the ground his tongue stuck out of the side of his mouth as he laid limp on the ground.

"Ryland!" I screamed as I ran towards him. I lowered my ear to his chest to listen for a heartbeat, but I couldn't hear one.

I kneeled next to him and began chest compressions.

"Ryland, please." I yelled as tears began leaving my eyes.

Nothing was happening. I suddenly felt a searing pain in my chest as any life he had left faded away. No. He can't be dead. I held on to his shoulders and my head fell on his chest in defeat. Tears were uncontrollably running down my cheeks. Everything In that moment seemed to change. As if time itself paused the fight my mom was dominating outside. My ears felt as if I were underwater. I couldn't hear anything but my vision was seeing red. I stood up and walked outside, away from his body and when my mom saw me she stopped what she was doing and stared in shock but I didn't care. I felt as though I was living inside of my head and not actually in control of anything. Everything was moving with a mind of its own.

I watched as all the snow around me turned black, all the wolves that were growling were now on the ground writhing in pain, as the snow around them darkened. As if a snake was slithering towards them pulling them under into an infinite amount of pain. I watched as dark purple and black portals opened all around the forest. Lightning emanating from all of them and zapping the ground. I watched as wolves from all different packs charged out of them and towards the wolves writhing in pain on the ground. Their limbs were being torn to pieces and their fur was being shredded.

"Octavia, control." I heard my mom speak loudly behind me.

I turned my head slightly and looked at her starting at the scene in front of us in shock.

I felt a vicious smile take over my face before turning back to the scene in front of me watching the chaos unfold. I left the wolves to tear all the rogues apart as I re-entered the cave. Ryland's body laying in the same spot I left him.

I placed my hands on his side, and felt time warp before a portal began opening around me.

"Octavia! No!" I heard my mom scream. But it was too late. Everything around me began morphing into something unfamiliar. Before pitch black hit my eyes.
