Chapter 7
Bree's POV
It was the strangest thing I had ever seen my entire life. The inside of a human house. It was insane. There were a bunch of things called couches, tables, carpet, doors, stairs. It blew my mind when they took me into these rooms they had. Mabel raced up the stairs and to her clothes holder, or closet. She pulled out a bunch of sweaters and skirts and tried to see which ones could be able to fit me. Since I was taller then her she had to find some longer or stretchy clothes.
Mabel finally found a long bright pink sweater and gave me black shorts. I put them on and they fit, kind of, but it was good enough for me. The sweater was very soft and the sleeves were longer than my arms, hiding my hands. The shorts almost reached just below my knees. She smiled approvingly and nodded.
"Thank God I still had the winter sweater..." She whispered. "Ok, so what do we do with your eyes?" She asked.
I looked away ashamed. Why did I have to be so different from humans. They were amazing!
Dipper spoke up from his bed. "Contacts."
Mabel shook her head. "We don't have contacts...glasses!" Mabel rummaged through her dresser drawer and pulled out, I guess the glasses. She told me how to put the glasses on and I put them on. It was strange to have two lenses when I only needed one. I had to take off the eye patch, revealing my blind eye. When I put the glasses on, the world went a shade darker.
"Whoa!" I exclaimed. "How did you do that?!"
Mabel laughed. "The glasses have stuff called tint that make it less bright out." She explained. Mabel went behind me and tied my messy hair up in a pony tail. "There, you are complete."
I rubbed my tongue over my teeth. "But...wont humans notice my teeth?" I asked.
"First of all, we are people. Don't call us humans. Everybody, everyone, them, they, you, us, we. Don't call us humans. It sounds like your from another planet. "
I nodded.
"And second, they probably wont. It's only...slightly pointed." She said slowly. "Well, you are finished. You look human!"
I gasped happily. "Really?! I look human?!"
Mabel nodded and I looked toward Dipper for approval. He looked me over and nodded. "I guess." Was all he said.
Mabel shook her head. "Ignore him, getting make-overs is not a guy thing."
I didn't really understand what she said so I just nodded.
"You ready to go explore the world as a human?" She asked.
I jumped up and down happily. "Of course!"
Fear flashed on Mabel's face and she grabbed my arm for some reason and yanked me down. "No! No flying! No floating! Seriously...they'll send the government to examine you and- just don't."
I looked at her wildly, but nodded in agreement.
"Oh wait, one more thing." Mabel plucked my hat off and sat it next to my old clothes and put a beanie on me. "There you go. Perfect!"
I smiled. "Let's go!"
Mabel touched my shoulder quickly. "Gruncle Stan, um, our Great Uncle, is taking us out to eat and you can come. Just, try to blend in."
I exhaled. "Ok."
Dipper got up and we ran down stairs. In the living room, that what Mabel said it was called, and there was an old man lounging in the chair. I jumped in fear as he turned to us.
"Who's that?" Asked the old man, his voice gravely.
"This is Bree, she's my friend. And Bree, this is our Great Uncle Stan." I wanted to give a big smile, but I was afraid he'd see my teeth so I gave a small smile and said "Hi."
Gruncle Stan got up and he put money in his pocket. "Well we're going to Greasy's Diner-"
"She's coming with." Dipper said suddenly, surprising me.
Gruncle Stan raised an eyebrow. "Ok." He brushed his arms. "Let's go." He lead us off to this thing Mabel said was called a car. We got in the back of the car and I couldn't help, but marvel over it. I kept pressing the a button that made the thing called a window slide up and down up and down up and down. Dipper grabbed my hand and shook his head. He ended up having to buckle me up quickly.
Gruncle Stan drove us down to the Greasy's Diner place and we got out and I whispered to Mabel. "That car is amazing!"
She giggled and made a quiet sign with her hands. We walked in and sat down at a booth. The waitress handed us menus and I stared at it in horror. I couldn't read human words that well, only some. I whispered to Mabel that I couldn't read it and she said quietly the choices of food I could have. I ended up just ordering mashed potatoes, though I probably wouldn't eat them, cause I never ate.
We sat down and talked, but I was mostly silent. Thinking. This is human life. It's so weird. All of these weird contraptions that they have... I looked out the window and could see Stan's car from here. Another car pulled up to it. This was so weird and I couldn't look at Stan. I asked where the bathroom was and Mabel pointed to the corner and I got up quickly and went it. I found a mirror and looked at myself. The mirror image of myself was almost transparent since Dream Demon's didn't have souls we couldn't-
Wait. No. That's impossible. I could see myself in the mirror. I was transparent, but not enough to be invisible. I stumbled back against the smooth tile wall. "No way..." I whispered. I looked over myself in the mirror. I looked so normal, so human. I smiled. I looked so human.
The door to the bathroom suddenly swung open and a boy stepped in. I screamed and fell back and he jumped when he saw me. He had short blonde hair and almost golden eyes. He was wearing an everyday gray T-shirt and jeans. He stared at me before he spoke. "Um...I think you're in the wrong bathroom"
I blinked. "W-what?" I said. I almost cringed at hearing my own strange unhuman voice.
He looked around awkwardly. "This is the boy's bathroom."
I got another rare case of embarrassment and flushed. "O-oh...I'm sorry, I-" I decided to tell a half-lie. "I'm blind in one eye and I didn't notice-"
He took my hand and helped me up. "It's ok." He said. "Um, I'm Jace." (for any of you Shadow Hunter lovers out there: AAAAAAAAHHHHHHHH JACE! HE IN MEH BOOK! <3).
I looked down at his hand and shook it like Mabel had shown me. "I'm Bree." I said.
"That's a nice name. " He said.
I smiled, forgetting about my teeth. "Thanks." I said.
"I can show you where the girl's bathroom is." He said.
"Um, sure, thanks." He opened the door and walked me to the girl's bathroom. I smiled and waved back at him and he disappeared behind the door. I closed the bathroom door and exhaled. That boy way nice, really nice. I didn't know humans could be that kind to other humans. When Dipper and Mabel first saw me they freaked out. Well, I was a Dream Demon, but still, I didn't know this guy. I smiled and walked out, back to Mabel and Dipper and Stan. My mashed potatoes were sitting and waiting for me.
I ate in silence, thinking about Jace, impatiently waiting to tell Mabel and Dipper about the incident with the mirror. Jace came out of the bathroom and he smiled at me. I smiled back, brightly. I suddenly felt Mabel staring at me so I looked down and ate my mashed potatoes.
When we finished eating we drove home and quickly ran up to the attic. Mabel closed the door behind her. "Who was that?" she asked.
"Um, this guy I bumped into while going to the bathroom-room." I said.
Mabel looked confused and there was another look on her face that I couldn't decipher. "How?"
"I apparently went to the wrong one and he told me which one was right." I said.
Mabel flushed. "Whoops. Forgot to tell you that part." She said. "What was his name?" She asked.
"Jace."
Mabel nodded and in her silence I decided to speak. "Guys, when I was in the bathroom and I looked into the mirror. But, I could see myself! That should be impossible! Dream Demon's don't have souls so they don't have a reflection, but I could see me a little bit. I quickly grabbed Mabel's mirror and showed them.
Mabel gasped. "Whoa."
Dipper sat up, suddenly interested now that it included an unnatural phenomenon. "You realize what this means...you're becoming human."
At first I felt fear then I smiled. "I'm becoming human! This is incredible!" I exclaimed.
Dipper shrugged. "I don't know if it's incredible." He said slowly.
"Well I think it is." I said angrily.
Dipper's eyes grew wide and I realized I was turning red so I cooled down. "Sorry." I said curtly. I took off my glasses and I wanted to slap Dipper when I saw him quickly look away. I sighed. "Look guys, stop flinching every single time I show resemblance to a Dream Demon." I said straight forward.
Dipper flushed guiltily. "I'm sorry. Just, every time I see something like him I just..." He trailed off.
"Him?" I looked down. "Oh. Bill."
Dipper nodded. "Sorry."
I shrugged, pretending to be fine. "Its ok..."
Mabel cut in. She knew how to cheer me up. "Um, hey, Bree I've decided that I guess I'll show you pain."
I shot up the roof in shock. Literally, I was floating in the air. "R-really?! Oh my gosh! Oh my gosh!" I twirled around.
Dipper looked at Mabel, his jaw dropped. "Mabel. No." He said.
"No...I am. It'll just be a little cut." Mabel dove and snatched Dipper's pocket knife. Dipper lunged for it, but Mabel was already sitting on her bed.
My eyes were wide and I floated down next to her. Dipper turned away and shook his head. My mouth hung open in awe. Mabel looked tense. Very tense. What was wrong? Mabel was holding the knife by the top of her arm. She was hesitating. Why? Finally, she drew the knife across her skin and it cut open. I heard Mabel gasp and she was clenching her teeth together so hard that I thought they'd shatter. She drew the knife back and blood dripped out.
At first I was smiling, then I saw the blood. Something shot through me. The strangest feeling I had ever felt. I gasped as energy blasted through me. I threw my back against the wall, staring at the blood. Mabel looked up at me confused. "What?"
My lip trembled. "I-I" My vision of sight narrowed. The blood. What was this?
I heard Mabel scream and then Dipper moving to her. Dipper was screaming at me, but I couldn't hear or see.
"BREE!" I could hear Dipper's muffled cried. "BREE NO!" He screeched.
"NO! BREE PLEASE!" It was Mabel. I couldn't see, it was like being blind. What was going on?
"LEAVE! NOW! LEAVE!" Dipper screamed at me.
Suddenly I could hear correctly and I could see now. Mabel was crying on the floor and Dipper was holding her, shielding Mabel. His face was red with anger.
"What? What' s happening? What happened?" I asked bewildered. I felt poking in my mouth. My teeth. They felt sharp on my lips.
Dipper screamed at me. "GET OUT OF HERE!"
"What did I do?!" I cried. I was so confused. Why were they doing that human crying thing. Why? I felt so worried.
"You're a monster! You tried to attack Mabel!" Dipper screamed.
"No I..." I didn't remember any of this, or see any of this.
Dipper's gaze was like fire.
"Why did I do that?" I whispered half to myself.
The anger from his gaze melted away only a fraction. "You-you didn't-"
"Why would you think I would do that on purpose?" I asked offended.
Dipper lowered his gaze. "Human blood...it must have some effect on Dream Demons."
Mabel closed her eyes and leaned into Dipper reassuringly.
Guilt tore through me. It was right what he said.
I was a monster.
