Utricularia Vulgaris
As the nurses wheeled Hugo into the emergency room, James watched from his car, punching the steering wheel in frustration. After the wild goose chase he was sent on trying to find a hospital that wasn't full with burn victims, James also had to deal with a disoriented man who refused to talk. James had been unable to pry any answers from him, no matter how loud he yelled or how much he threatened him. On top of that, Gotham was still in flames and there seemed to be no progress in stopping the fires.
"I need to regroup with the department," James told himself as sirens droned on endlessly around him. "Oh, Barbara. I hope you're safe wherever you are. I'm sorry."
As he drove frantically through the streets towards Wayne Tower, he had to suddenly slam on the brake. Lined up across the street with their guns drawn was the rest of the police force. But what they were pointing at, he couldn't tell.
Quickly getting out of the car, James ran towards the line of police in front of him.
"Hey! What-" James paused, seeing an overturned car to the side.
"James! Get away from there!" Detective Bullock gestured with a wave of his gun.
"What's going on?" James finally turned to where their guns were aimed, expecting to see the two women the GCPD had long been after. But what stood in front of him was nothing of that sort. There, without any shoes or a shirt, stood a lone man with piercing hazel eyes.
"Harvey... who is that?" James whispered, never taking his gaze off the man.
"I don't know..." No sooner had the words left his mouth, there was a flash of black and the man was gone. "Hey! Where did he go?!" Harvey glanced around along with the other officers.
As if to answer his question, a loud creaking sound echoed from above, drawing everyone's attention. James looked up just in time to see the large 'W' from the tower come crashing down onto several police cars, smashing them instantly. Guns started going off and people were screaming as something came rushing at the line from the ground. James barely had any time to process what was happening before his colleagues fell to the ground, bleeding profusely from their necks. Arms were ripped from their sockets and heads severed from the spine.
"Harvey!" James sprinted towards his friend, pushing past men and women wailing in agony as they clutched their bleeding wounds. Those who were fortunate enough to stay in one piece had already run off towards safety.
"J-James." Harvey reached out his arm before half of his head broke in two.
"Oh, God!" James gagged, feeling his legs buckle from under him. Thinking he must have been cut too, he let gravity do its work and pull him down. But before he could crumble to the pavement, a pair of arms grabbed him and held him up.
"Sarah?" James looked at her numbly. "Are you hurt?"
"No.. This isn't my blood." Sarah wiped her cheek. "We- We can't stay here. We'll be killed!"
"I can't leave my officers!" James tried to move out of her grasp. "That would be cowardice!"
"This- This thing can't even be hit with bullets! We have to leave!" She started tugging his sleeve. Too tired to resist, James allowed her to guide him towards the car. As she revved it to life, James continued watching the chaos just a few feet away. Whatever that man was, he seemed to be gone. All that remained were the mutilated bodies he had left in his wake.
As they drove off into the night, a high-pitched screech rang out above them. One so inhuman it chilled James to his very bones.
