Chapter 8

Hazel's POV

Only 33 girls have been chosen. That means 2 are left and they are most likely Sixes.

The announcer smiles a fake smile.

"We have two luck ladies left who are both Sixes. The first one is Bianca di Angelo from Likely."

A girl with olive skin and dark hair is on the screen. Older than I am and really pretty.

"Hazel Levesque from Ottaro."

My mom snorts from the other room. (A/N and not drugs. That would be bad. And Marie Levesque didn't do drugs. At least, I don't think so. She probably did. Okay, back to the story...)

"Good luck with that. A Six in the Selection. You'll be gone before the first week."

I try to separate my mom's negativity away from the rest of my thoughts. But part of it stays with me.

But I'm really going into the Selection. And even if I only stay there for a week, at least I would have had a taste of what the good life feels like. And a week without my mother.

Time Lapse to the next day

I wake up and birds are literally chirping. Today the person from the palace is coming for me to sign a contract or something.

I get dressed into a random T-shirt. We don't have enough money for me to be picky.

The door bell rings. I rush downstairs to answer it, but my mom gets there before me.

"Yes? What do you want?"

"M'am, we have been informed that a lucky lady here was entered into the Selection and was picked? Hazel Levesque, I believe is her name."

I wedge my way through and smile at the man.

"Yes, I'm Hazel. That's my mom. You can come in."

"Thank you."

He awkwardly stands in our dining room, the room the door opens up to.

"How...quaint," he says with disgust in his voice. "Now, I need you to fill out this paperwork, Mrs. Levesque. And Hazel, come this way."

He directs me over to the kitchen table and produces a pen.

"Now, full name?"

"Hazel (idk middle name) Levesque."

He asks a few more questions before he stands up.

"I must be off. I have plenty of other lucky ladies to see today. Good day, Mrs. Levesque."

He walks out abruptly and I don't blame him. I would too.
