13- A Day With Piper

Livy
There was a flurry of activity around camp the next morning. Something big seemed to be about to happen, which everyone knew about but me.

"What's going on?" I grabbed S.T's arm as she sprinted past me holding a large amount of dirty washing.

"It's the 30th," S.T replied, "Aunt Ri is visiting."

"Wait- hold up, Aunt Ri? As in the crazy goddess who wants to kill me?"

"Oh, Styx I forgot about that!" S.T cursed, she dropped her washing on the floor and grabbed my arm. She ran all the way to the big house with me in tow, "Dad!" she yelled when we approached the group of adults gathered outside the big house, "Livy!"

Percy's mouth fell open, and he looked accusingly at all of the other adults, "right who was supposed to remind me about that?"

No one replied until Annabeth punched the beautiful woman(whose name I had learned was Piper)'s arm.

"Ow Annabeth that hurt!" Piper complained.

"It was supposed to hurt dummy," Annabeth rolled her eyes, "you had one job!"

"Oh," Piper rubbed the back of her neck, "I-uh- I forgot."

"Well, guess who's on Livy duty then," said the small man (whose name was Leo).

"Fine," Piper said, she turned to me, "come on let's go Camp Jupiter."

"I'll see you later," S.T assured me, patting my back. I followed Piper, still unsure of what exactly was going on.

"What is happening?" I demanded of Piper as I hurried after her, it seemed she was quite a fast walker.

"Ri is visiting, and me being me, I totally forgot that my only job was to make sure that you were safe whilst she was here," said Piper, "I've had a lot on my mind recently and I totally forgot, I'm sorry."

"No, it's fine," I assured her, "it's not like Ariadne would be able to tell that I'm an Apollo camper anyway," I said bitterly.

We passed through the portal, which stopped Piper responding to my statement. When we emerged in Camp Jupiter and set out walking towards New Rome it took Piper a few moments to realise what I said.

"What do you mean, of course, you're an Apollo camper," Piper frowned.

"It doesn't matter," I shook my head. It had been getting me down a bit over the past weeks that I hadn't seemed to be able to pick up any of the talents that were prone to Apollo campers. I couldn't do archery, I was useless in the infirmary and I couldn't hold a tune to save my life.

"If you said it then it matters."

"I can't do any of the things that Apollo campers are supposed to be able to do," I said, I hardly knew Piper, but she seemed like the kind of person who warranted truth-telling, "Bianca keeps telling me that Apollo is the god of plenty of things, but I've tried everything, I can't sing, I can't do archery, I'm no use at medicine-"

"I can tell you one thing that Apollo is the god of which you're good at," Piper mused.

"What's that?"

"Truth-telling."

"No way, I'm not good at that," I protested.

"I think you are, so go on, tell me some truths about Olivia Spencer," Piper said.

"There's not much to tell," I shrugged, "I'm just plain old me."

We were nearing New Rome, which was beautiful. I hadn't been to New Rome yet, and it was a lot to take in.

"Everyone has their own story, tell me yours."

"Well, I've almost been expelled from my school more times than I can count," I said, "based on the fact that I've been skipping school for almost a month, I guess I have been kicked out now."

"I never got along with school either," Piper assured me, "some Demigods do, but most are more likely to blow up the school that get an A in class. That just shows that you fit in here with all of us."

"Yeah, I fit in the place that has to hide me so their relative doesn't kill me."

"The gods always want to kill someone, they get over it pretty quickly," Piper's eyes rested on a small cafe, "fancy hot chocolate?"

"I love hot chocolate."

We took seats at the small cafe, and Piper quickly ordered two hot chocolates with cream, marshmallows, chocolate flakes and everything else that you could possibly have on a hot chocolate. They were beautiful, I had never had a hot chocolate like it.

"This is beautiful," I sighed, taking my first sip.

Piper gave her hot chocolate a sad look, which confused me as I didn't know how anyone could be sad when confronted with such a beautiful hot chocolate.

"Are you okay?" I asked.

"Yes, sorry I just got lost in my thoughts."

"I told my truth, so you have to tell yours, why does hot chocolate make you sad?"

"It's not hot chocolate, it's who hot chocolate reminds me of," sighed Piper.

"You lost someone?"

"Yes, I lost my best friend," Piper said sadly.

"You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to-"

"I'm sure that S.T has told you all about the Giant War?" she asked.

I frowned, "Yes, the prophecy of seven and all that."

"Well, then I'm sure that you know I was one of the Seven demigods who went on the quest, Percy and Annabeth were there of course, and Leo. I don't think you've met Frank and Hazel, they spend most of their time in the Roman camp. Anyway, the seventh was Jason Grace."

It dawned on me then that the name of Piper's son was Jason, and although I knew it wasn't my business I wanted to know more.

"Jason was killed when we were helping Apollo on a quest," said Piper, "I couldn't do anything."

I stared at her with my lips parted.

"There's no use pretending that demigod life is anything other than what it is," Piper said, "you lose people, people die. Everyone else might sugarcoat it, but I'm going to tell you it exactly as it is."

That was when I realised what I had in common with Apollo. People told me their truths, they always had told me their truths and they always will.
