Chapter 6: Havoc in Hell's Kitchen
—New York—
Matt, who was injured, entered the hotel room where Kilgrave was hiding at. It had been a few hours since his battle with the Defenders and he could hear the news being broadcasted throughout the building. He opened the door, using the key Kilgrave had given him, and started going through the first aid kit in the kitchen.
"You bloody outdid yourself, Murdock. Good job." Kilgrave said, eating some cereal. "Look at the news."
"I could hear it from outside. Looks like I'll be on the news for a few days." Matt smiled. "Any plans we'll be doing? I'm ready."
"I like your confidence, Murdock. We'll go to the police station and get rid of some files that could lead them to finding out that I'm alive. No need for violence." Kilgrave smirked and turned back to the room, "In two hours, Matthew."
"I'll just be in the kitchen." Matt reminded.
—Police Station—
Luke and Jessica were sitting in Misty's office, waiting for her to get mad at them. Robbie was being treated to some medical care that he desperately needed. Misty walked in to the room frustrated and slammed newspaper on the table.
"Hell's Kitchen just turned their back on Daredevil. He is considered a criminal. Officer Mahoney is outside, looking to ask for questions." Misty sighed, "I want to know why Matt isn't Matt anymore."
"It's him. I'm telling you. It's Kilgrave who's manipulating him to turn himself into some kind of monster." Jessica said.
"She's right. I saw Kilgrave. He's with Matt. There's no lying here." Luke added.
"Well, here's some news that could brighten your day. Kilgrave is considered dead in our files." Misty said. She looked out the door and saw Mahoney waiting for the two of them. "You better talk to him so he knows what the hell is going on."
Luke nodded at Jessica and they both stood up, exiting Misty's office. Cops were passing by them with heavy documents in hand. The police station was always busy but not this busy.
"Officer Mahoney. Nice to meet you." Luke said, offering his hand to him.
"Luke Cage. Considered to be the Saviour of Harlem. Nice to meet you." Mahoney smiled and turned his way to Jessica, "Jessica Jones. Don't have anything to say about you."
"A P.I. We can roll with that, ok?" Jessica scoffed.
"Alright I need the details. Why did Murdock turn on us? Hell's Kitchen. This is his home." Mahoney whispered so no one knew Matt's name.
"Kilgrave. Remember the guy who mind-controlled you? He's back. And he used Matt because he is skilled." Jessica explained.
"Alright. Fair enough. But on our files, he isn't dead." Mahoney questioned.
"We don't know how he is alive but I've seen him walking, talking and breathing." Luke answered.
"Pictures, videos? Is there anything I can use to confirm his death?" Mahoney asked but both of them answered no, "Then I can't help you with that. I want to see him."
Before Jessica could speak, she got this feeling inside of her that something wasn't right. Suddenly Kilgrave and Matt walked into the room and she tried to hid herself.
"Point a gun at your face!" Kilgrave ordered, making everyone do as he said. "Much better."
Kilgrave started to smile as he walked further down the hall. Even Luke, who wasn't following his orders before, started following now. He was unprepared and so before he knew it, a gun was being pointed to his head. Misty was grabbing for the door but she fell for it too.
"Jessica. How lovely it is to see you." Kilgrave smiles and looked at Matt. "Delete it all."
"Why are you here? Why are you alive?" Jessica asked in fear.
"When you snapped my neck, my body was brought to the hospital. I was surely dead but I had a few things to say. And lucky enough for me, I got to say fix me. The doctor fixed me by transferring my brain to someone else and I got plastic surgery, for you to see my face." Kilgrave explained.
"I would prefer the other person's face than yours, asshole."
"Don't be so rude, Jessica. We could still be together." Kilgrave smirked, "Just believe me. Give me one more chance."
"Just give me one more chance to snap your neck then I'll believe you." Jessica answered.
"You seem a bit sarcastic today, don't you think?" Kilgrave asked, looking at Luke, "I remember you. The bulletproof man. The man who has the ability to resist fire. Luke Cage. Hero to Harlem. A gunshot won't kill you."
"From all the people in the world, why would you choose Matt Murdock?"
"I can relate to him. We both had rough childhoods. Don't you think? We are both treated as monsters so why not show ourselves as monsters?"
"He's not a monster."
"He is."
Jessica got close enough to grab Kilgrave by the neck. Everyone in the room gained consciousness but Matt was there in time to throw Jessica away.
"Stop!" Kilgrave shouted. Mahoney was already raising his gun to aim at Kilgrave before Matt stabbed him in the chest.
"Oh shit!" Jessica shouted, as Matt got rid of the knife from Mahoney's chest.
"Are you done, Murdock?" Kilgrave asked.
"I am." Matt looked at Jessica and Mahoney's body, "Let's go."
—4 hours later—
Jessica had handcuffs at the precinct. She just finished talking with the detectives and she was waiting for the decision. She can't believe that she couldn't snap his neck fast enough. Matt had to be the one to pull her down. Now Matt was going to be blamed for the death of officer Mahoney.
The door opened and she was expecting it to be a detective. It wasn't. It was a woman who was dressed in black and sat down on front of her.
"My name is Hope van Dyne and I work for the Avengers. Nice to see you, Jessica Jones." Hope said.
"Rand got captured didn't he?" Jessica asked and she nodded in approval. "What do you want from me?"
"I want information about what happened earlier? With officer Mahoney."
"Cameras? They can hear us. Any word I say is recorder."
"That's why you should probably start talking now." Hope pointed at the cameras being covered with ants.
"You won't believe me." Jessica said.
"Give it a try."
Jessica explained about the incident in the police station. With the entrance of Kilgrave up to the death of Mahoney. Hope listened attentively and she actually believed it.
"Thank you for your cooperation, Miss Jones. I think that will be all today. I hope on seeing you in the future." Hope smiled.
"Wait. What are you planning to do with Murdock?" Jessica asked.
"Bill Foster wanted me to try out Prison 42 after he joined the project a few weeks ago. There are already super-powered individuals residing there so it's best that he gets to join in on the action."
"No. You can't put him there. He's a hero, trust me. Hope, you may think it's his fault but it's Kilgrave. Give me time."
"Look. Tony Stark will kill me if I'm going to let this case go easy. If you don't catch Murdock in seven days or one more innocent people die, the Avengers will take this as their fight, ok?"
"Thank you, Hope."
Hope exited the room but Jessica got to see a glimpse of the person she was talking to outside.
"You've got to be kidding me." Hope said, as someone was handing her some Baskin Robbins ice cream.
"Matt. Damn it." Jessica muttered in frustration. She needed to find a way to turn Matt back into good in seven days. But first, she needed to find a way out of the cell, "If Rand was here."
