Chapter 5: The Devil Returns
—New York—
Sitting in the hotel room was Kilgrave. The man got a few stitches sewed by Matt because he had more experience with him. The short battle between him and the Defenders caused some news on the television. Some people believed that Daredevil has turned evil, but the Defenders were trying their best to convince the media that it was someone else. Nonetheless, the more attraction they get, the more the Avengers will be interested in the case.
Frustrated, Kilgrave stood up and ordered Matt to watch the door for any unwanted people. He walked inside the bathroom and held the sink tightly in anger. He splashed water to cool himself down and to try and think of his next move.
"Matthew!" Kilgrave shouted, which startled Matt for a moment but walked to him, "The Defenders. They're trying to figure out if I'm alive. I need you to draw some attention, alright?"
"Yes, sir. What do you want me to do?" Matt asked.
"Do something that the Defenders will be troubled about. Rob a bank. Set a place on fire. Do whatever you need to do."
"Will do." Matt nodded, making his way out of the apartment room.
"The Defenders." Kilgrave muttered, and tried to plan something, "The police station."

While they were waiting for Jessica to arrive, Colleen poured some green tea into Luke's and Danny's cups. They needed to tell something important to her. With how texting works now, the Avengers could be reading it. For the mean time, Luke discussed with Danny on how Pop's barbershop was doing and how they could start a business together called Heroes for Hire.
They finally stopped talking when Jessica walked through the doors and greeted the two of them.
"You guys looked like you were about to kiss." Jessica joked, giving Luke a hug.
"Seems like you didn't sleep last night." Luke noticed the fatigue in Jessica's face.
"And the other night." Jessica faintly smiled and sat down on the chair, "You could have texted me instead."
"The Avengers are connected into every cellular phone in the world. If they see something wrong, they'll act on it." Danny explained.
"Well won't we have some fun." Jessica scoffed and rubbed her face roughly, "Why did you call me."
"We need to talk about Matt. He's been... weird."
"Why? What's been happening?" Jessica asked with concern. "I tried to find Kilgrave yesterday so I didn't focus on him."
"Good news is Matt is still alive. Bad news is that I think Matt and Kilgrave are working together." Luke muttered but Jessica still went angry.
"Working? Together? You've got to be fucking kidding me." Jessica said in frustration, "Do you even have evidence?"
"We found Kilgrave yesterday and Matt was stopping us from getting him. Matt's gone. He's working for him now."
"Then we need to let the press know. We need to let everyone know that he is dangerous!"
"We let the world know, we let the Avengers know!" Luke argued, "Imagine Hulk or Thor, rampaging through our cities. He wants you, Jessica."
"And how do you know that, Cage? You don't know me enough."
"But I do know you enough." Luke said as he looked at Danny.
"I'm sorry... you kind of lost me there with the I do know you." Danny chuckled, sipping on his green tea, "What?"
"Are you really drinking tea at this time, Iron Clad?" Jessica annoyingly asked.
"Iron Clads." Danny corrected her. He stood up and walked towards them, "If we get Kilgrave, we get Matt Murdock."
"I know Matt. He's relentless when he's off the hook. He's going to kill someone. We need to find Kilgrave now."
"And how do you plan on doing that? Anyone in the city could be under his spell for all we know." Luke said.
"Danny. You're friends with the king of Wakanda, right?" Jessica asked Danny while smiling.
"Yeah. Why? Are you going to make him join us or what? What are we going for here?"
"Since you said that the Avengers have the access to all of the cellular phones in the world, I need you to use it and find any credit cards that have the name Kevin Thompson. You've seen his face. You know how he looks like."
Danny nodded and immediately exited the room. He went for his car that was parked outside and drove directly to Avengers Tower. Luke and Jessica were left in the Dojo to think about what to do next.
"While Danny finds Kilgrave, let's find Matt." Jessica suggested.
"Now you see, that's where our little problem starts." Luke faintly said.
"What problem?" Jessica could tell the worry in his face, "Don't tell me that Reyes went for Matt?"
"Guys." Colleen called as she leaned into the room, "We kind of have a Murdock situation over here."
"I think that's our cue." Luke said.
Out in the streets of downtown, however, was a fight between Ghost and Devil. Matt and Robbie had been fighting for the past fifteen minutes. Robbie finally saw Matt when he was planning to rob a bank. Now the scene was broken cars and exploded fire tanks.
"Matt! I know you're in there." Robbie said but with his Ghost Rider voice, "I can get you out!"
"I've seen it, Reyes! The light that hinders us all. We must see it." Matt smiled, blood dripping off his mouth, "You must see it."
"Over my dead body." Robbie said, slamming his chain on the road.
Matt dodged his attack and threw a baton that tangled Robbie's hands. This stopped Robbie from using the chain and Matt took advantage. He threw a piece of concrete on him first and did a side kick to Robbie's skull. Some parts of Matt's leg started to be on fire, which didn't worry him to much since it had fire protection.
"Are you really a defender? I wonder why you were picked by them?" Matt asked while chuckling at Robbie. He stared into his eyes which didn't faze him. He delivered a punch to his skull which hurt for him, "You are weak. I will always better than you, Reyes."
"What does that have to do with me being the Ghost Rider?" Robbie smiled and broke out of the ropes that were restricting him.
Robbie struck Matt with his elbow which sent him flying. Matt hit a wall which made him fall to the ground in pain. Robbie raised a metal pole, which got on fire once he touched, and tried to strike Matt with it. Jessica stopped Robbie from striking him.
"Not the plan, Robbie." Jessica stated, removing him from her grasp. "We need him alive so we could know where Kilgrave is."
"Good idea. But we need to get that thing out of his brain."
Matt swiped Robbie's feet which made him fall. The chain also wrapped around Jessica's foot by accident. Luke came running at Matt, but missed his punch by a few centimetres. Luckily, there was a bridge near them that was on top of a highway. Matt carried Jessica in his arms and threw her off the roof. Luke chose to save Jessica, jumping off the bridge and grabbing Jessica mid-air. To make it easier, Robbie let go of the chain and let it be dragged by Jessica's foot. While all of this was going on, Matt walked away without being noticed.
