Chapter 3: Heavy Work
—Harlem—
Hidden in the shadows were Luke Cage and Robbie Reyes. The deal was going to be done during the dark, and if Robbie was right, Shades was going to be there.
After a while, two white vans were parked right outside the park. Shades and some of his personal bodyguards exited their vehicles while Luke was watching them through binoculars.
"Is it Shades?" Robbie asked, looking around to make sure nobody was watching them.
"Yeah. Being out of prison must feel good. But I didn't hear from Misty that he got out." Luke said in curiosity, "How long has it been since you've seen Misty?"
"Three days ago. I delivered some crime evidence from the place in Danny's Tower. Why?"
"He must have escaped from Seagate." Luke bit his tongue, "Let's Get him before the bastards arrive."
Quickly getting out of the bushes, the two men started rushing towards Shades and his men. Robbie turned into the Ghost Rider when they were close to them. Shades's men started firing at Luke but the bullets were nothing to them. Robbie took most of the men down by using his chain and turning them into ashes. Luke grabbed Shades by the neck and pushed him towards a tree.
"Why are you here, Shades? Shouldn't you be in Seagate?" Luke asked, tightening his grip on Shades.
"Seems like you developed some new relationships, Carl." Shades said with a painful smile.
"Answer me or I'll break your back into four separate pieces." Luke insisted.
"I made deals, Lucas. Deals that would get me out of prison. After Mariah went insane like Stokes, I knew I needed to change partnerships."
"And who is this new partner you are talking about?" Luke asked. He noticed Shades wasn't answering so he lessened the grip. "Answer me!"
"He's still alive. Just give him time to breath." Robbie said, back to his human form.
"Do you have water by any chance?"
"I have fire. Will that do to make him wake up?" Robbie sarcastically asked.
Luke dropped Shades on the ground and waited for him to wake up. While waiting, Luke and Robbie were sitting on a bench. They decided to ask Shades who was their new partner before calling Misty. They continued to chat until he woke up.
—Matt's Apartment—
Matt woke up on the couch, sensing that someone was making coffee. After blinking a couple more times, he saw Jessica making two cups of coffee for the both of them. Matt did some stretching before standing up and walking towards the kitchen.
"You've been sleeping well the last few days, Jess." Matt smiled when he entered the kitchen.
"Less cases makes me sleep better." Jessica answered.
"Why are we awake at night?" Matt asked, looking out the window.
"Because we slept late, remember?" Jessica reminded, but Matt couldn't answer, "You and I are so tired that we basically slept for almost twenty hours."
"Well I haven't slept for twenty or so hours prior to that so I had my rest."
"Do you have anything to do for tonight? Cases? Dinner? What?"
"I'm going to go visit Danny to help him get a case done. It won't be that long."
"And you better keep your phone on or I'll go to you and personally knock you out, asshole." Jessica chuckled.
"I will. The Immortal Iron Fist can probably handle himself but sometimes he needs the Daredevil."
"Jesus. Do you use that as a slogan now?"
"Language!"
"You're not going to have coffee?!" Jessica shouted as Matt left the apartment. She didn't get an answer, "Busy."
—Police Station—
Matt pretended to be blind, as always, when he walked inside the police station. He greeted and was greeted by police officers as he walked down the hallways. Danny and Misty must be there after Danny sent him a message.
The first place that Matt went to was the evidence room. As expected, Misty was standing still and pretending she was in the crime scene. After some hard-thinking, Matt interrupted her.
"Um... Misty?" Matt asked in a low voice. Misty slightly jumped but turned around to him, "Hard time?"
"Do you know Murdock? This may be one of the hardest cases that I have handled in my entire career." Misty sighed as she grabbed her cup of coffee, "Especially when you said that the person who was convicted of the crime, was innocent."
"Misty, I have senses. I can tell it from his heartbeat. He wasn't lying."
"Maybe this is one of those times where your Daredevil sense doesn't work."
"That arm is working though." Matt pointed at the bionic arm of Misty.
"Stark and Danny made it for me. Feels like a blast to use this kind of thing." Misty smiled, "So, how's Luke?"
"I actually haven't seen him in a long time. It's just that we don't have our schedules lined up. He is the protector of Harlem and I'm the protector of Hell's Kitchen."
"But I'm the protector of K'un L'un and I still have time to protect New York City." Danny happily said as he walked in the room, "What's good, Matt?"
He and Matt hugged for a second and looked at each other. It's been roughly three days since they met and Danny already looks good.
"I'm doing fine. How about you. You look like your having some fun."
"Of course I am. I know, the death of a worker is not something to be happy about but I think I have a lead on someone who did it." Danny muttered so Misty couldn't hear them. "I may get the exact location if you tell me what happened a few nights ago."
"What few nights ago? I don't remember what happened?"
"Remember when I told you to go after the Irish man? What information did you get from him?"
"I didn't. He shot himself before he could spill anything."
"Misty!" Danny shouted and she looked at him.
"I'm right here. You don't need to shout." Misty scoffed and looked back at the pictures.
"Do you have any pictures of someone shooting themselves?"
"In fact..." Misty started going through her files in a envelope, "I do. Why do you need it?"
Misty handed the pictures which Danny started to look at.
"This crime is related to the one you are looking at now. The Irish man killed the worker but knocked out the man who was convicted of the crime."
"Wait. The real question is why did the Irish man do it." Misty asked.
"Danny?"
"Yeah?"
"What information did you get about the location?"
"The boss works at Hell's Kitchen. Why?"
"I have to do some work. Danny, you stay with Misty and figure that out." Matt fixed his collar and excused himself out of the room.
—Harlem—
"And that is why I will never meet that kid again." Luke ended his story. "But I think I'll be forced to work with him."
"The kid is too young. What is he like, 16?" Robbie asked but heard a groan come out from Shades.
Luke stood up and grabbed Shades by the neck once again, only this time he lessened the grip. Robbie stood behind Luke in his Ghost Rider form to scare Shades a little.
"Back to the question. Who is your worker?"
"He's..." Shades thought for a moment, "British guy. An asshole and always gives commands."
"He sounds... familiar. Give me names damn it or I'll break your skull open."
"Kevin." Shades muttered.
—Warehouse—
Matt, in his Daredevil suit, entered a warehouse which was newly built but no one working in it. In the entrance he took down two guards who were illegally protecting something from the inside.
Sensing the danger around him, Matt opened the lights of the warehouse. It revealed at least five men sitting on a table playing poker. Four of them protecting one who was wearing a suit.
"Get him." The man with a British accent ordered.
The men rushed towards Matt but clearly he was more dominant. He was soaring through the air, using his batons and quick feet to take the bodyguards with ease. After several broken backs and cracked jaws, Matt leaped for the last guy who was standing. He took a breath for a moment, looking at the aftermath of his very easy battle. He then turned around to face the British man in a suit.
"You ordered the death of Danny Rand's worker. I'm sorry but you are under arrest, sir."
"Stop right there." He said.
Suddenly Matt stopped, actually following the man's orders. Matt stood still doing nothing while he was inspecting his suit. He removed Matt's mask to see what he looked like.
"Name?"
"Matthew Murdock." Matt said.
"Well, my name is Kevin Thompson but I go by the name Kilgrave. I know. Kilgrave is a scary name but it isn't. It's just for show." He chuckled and looked at Matt, "Strong man. Took down those useless bastards. Are you blind?"
"I am."
"Aren't you a special one." Kilgrave laughed and looked at the four men, "Call the cops and you'll help me in everything I do."
"Yes sir."
"Good." Kilgrave smiled.
