Chapter 14: Nuclear Ending
—12 hours later—
After a flight to Washington, Matt and Elektra started driving towards the White House. They received a message from Luke that they were on their way there using a helicopter. Kilgrave was definitely on his way as well.
"So, what happens when you capture Kilgrave?" Elektra asked as he drove from block to block.
"I hope I'm not wanted anymore. I may reside to a life as a vigilante since Matthew Murdock is now known as Daredevil." Matt sighed. "Take a right."
"I'm sure you can still work as a lawyer." Elektra smirked. "The guilty will probably shit their pants."
"Only if I wear the mask, Elektra. Only if I wear the mask."
"Daredevil doesn't define who Matthew Murdock is. Matthew Murdock defines who Daredevil is. It's your choice."
"My choice. My choice." Matt repeatedly muttered. "I'll keep that in mind."
"Yeah. Keep that in mind. By the way, he can control both of us." Elektra reminded. "He hasn't controlled me yet."
"I brought the helmet that makes me hear less but senses more. It's a prototype of Reed Richards." Matt explained. "Are you sure you don't want to call for more backup?"
"And risk the Avengers capturing us? Not a slight chance."
"Here we are." Matt placed the helmet on and exited the vehicle. He walked to the back of the car and opened the hood up. It revealed a lot of gadgets which was all labelled with prototype. Elektra looked at Matt awkwardly, "Mr. Richards is a smart guy."
"One question. Have you tried any one of these?" Elektra asked, picking up a metal ball.
"I was planning to." Matt smiled and started grabbing the things that looked important, "Hurry up. I can sense... he's in already. We have to move."
"Right behind you."
Matt ran as quickly as possible until he could reach the entrance of the White House. He could sense that Kilgrave was being welcomed by some of the guards inside. Two guards were already positioned outside the door so he came in aggressive. He threw one of he's batons at one of them and did a drop kick one of them through the window. The other guard slowly stood up and Matt knocked him down with his knuckles.
He opened his earphone when he walked in, "I'm in. How are you doing?"
"Glad that you remembered to put these on." Elektra chuckled, "I'm going through the kitchen. I'll meet you up at the stairs."
"Copy that." Matt said, knocking out three guards who were raising their pistols towards him.
He quietly walked in room for room because he could sense more gunpowder. His sense was correct when two guards came from the corner with AR's. When one of them turned to his corner, Matt threw the weapon aside and knocked the guard out. The other guard started opening fire at Matt, making him hide behind the wall. Once the guard needed to reload, Matt threw the other AR at him and pushed him through the wall.
"Mr. President!" Matt shouted, walking into the stairs. "Elektra, where are you?"
"I'm quite busy at the moment." Elektra said through the earphone. Matt heard continuous grunting and shouting on her end. "Lucky for me, I took the route with more guns."
"I'll start getting the president. I can smell Kilgrave trying to open the office." Matt started running to the Oval Office where the president was hiding. When he got to the second floor, he was greeted by four men with shoutguns. He turned his back on them and the bullets started ricocheting off his back, "God, I love Melvin."
After they ran out of bullets, Matt threw a circular ball in the middle of all of them and it flung them backwards. Matt got one of their shotguns to scare off the guards who were running at him with pistols. Two guards came up behind Matt.
"Put your hands down!" The guard ordered, "We were ordered by the president that we shoot all intruders. Your lucky that we-"
Matt threw a metal stick which extended into big piles of rope which covered the two guards to the ground. It made them unable to move.
"Reed, you are a genius man." Matt muttered to himself as he came up on a hallway, "Elektra, position?"
"I'm taking the behind route so far. I'll be meeting you right," Elektra stopped talking and the next corner Matt turned, she was standing right there, "here."
"Looks like someone planned something." Matt smiled. He checked the Oval Office but it was locked. He started silently picking the lock while Elektra watched.
"Are you sure you don't want to be back together?" Elektra asked.
"What do you mean? I don't understand what you're asking?"
"You know. Being together. Love. That's what you wanted right?"
"I would love to Elektra, but I have a girl of my own now. It's just too late."
"It's alright, Matthew. I understand."
Matt barged through the door and saw Kilgrave receiving the nuclear codes. Matt pulled the gun out of his pocket and pointed it at him.
"You might not want to move or say another word, Kilgrave. I strongly advised you." Matt said, aiming the gun at Kilgrave.
"You've got me again, Murdock. Brilliant, brilliant boy. I wish I still had you." Kilgrave said.
"Too bad you left me to die at Fisk's Tower. Looks like I have the upper hand in this situation." Matt smirked.
"Are you sure about that? I'm pretty sure your girlfriend has it." Kilgrave smiled. Matt turned around and to his surprise, Elektra was aiming a gun at him as well. "They can't all be good, am I right?"
"Elektra. You do know we are trying to prevent nuclear warfare, right?" Matt asked, slowly looking behind him.
"Like I said, Matthew, I understand now." Elektra shot Matt in the head and he fell down to the floor. A little bit of blood dripped out of his helmet as he landed. "He's all yours. I have no purpose here, now."
Elektra started to walk away but as soon as she exited, Danny unleashed the Iron Fist on her. She flung back into a wall and she went unconscious. Luke and Robbie entered the Oval Office where Kilgrave was looking at the nuclear codes. Suddenly a dozen of guards came out of a secret passage and started shooting at Luke and Robbie.
"I'll take the left." Luke said, pounding through the guards and blocking bullets. In the middle of the battle, he saw one of the guards escort Kilgrave out. "Danny! The bastard is escaping!"
"Not on my watch." Danny said, running towards the stairs. When he reached it, there were guards surrounding him. He knew there was only one exit, "Haven't tried it before."
Danny used the Iron Fist on the floor which broke the ceiling of the first floor. He fell through and found that he wasn't scratched. He ran outside and saw Kilgrave driving away in a black SUV. He saw a group of men entering another SUV so he used the Iron Fist on the car which sent the passengers flying through the other side. He got in and started driving.
Meanwhile, in the Oval Office, Robbie and Luke were beating down the guards until they broke their bones or they could barely breath. Matt woke up with the back of his head bleeding. The bullet didn't penetrate his helmet but it did crack it a little. He stood up and started to fight weakly.
"Hey! Murdock! Kilgrave is getting away and Danny is chasing him." Robbie shouted, "Take the car!"
Robbie threw the car keys at Matt who caught it with agility. He could sense that Kilgrave was far ahead of him so he jumped through the window. When he landed, he could feel pain in his left foot and left chest. He slowly walked up, and entered Robbie's car. The car opened and flames came out of it.
Danny and Kilgrave had a hot pursuit through the streets of Washington. They were both dodging cars from both lanes. It finally ended when Danny caught up and crashed the car through the gates of the Lincoln Memorial. Danny was badly hurt, getting his knee impaled on the railing of the gate. Kilgrave's impact was less dreadful, only flipping the car over and injuring his right arm. He crawled out of the car using the windshield and started limping his way to the Lincoln Memorial.
Matt came up from behind and parked the car behind the crash. Matt rushed towards Danny and peeked through the window.
"Danny, you ok?" Matt asked but all he could hear is Danny groaning, "Help! Can someone please help me!"
"Matt! Stop." Danny coughed, "I'll be fine. Go after Kilgrave."
"But your leg-"
"I don't care if I lose a leg, as long as the world isn't place under nuclear warfare, I'm fine. Just get Kilgrave."
Matt exhaled deeply and looked at Danny's eyes, "Fine! I'm doing it."
Matt ran to the Lincoln Memorial where people were running in fear when they saw Kilgrave's blood dripping everywhere. Even Matt was soaking in blood. His lip and right forehead were open to bruises. His entire body felt pain that not any normal human could take. He saw Kilgrave, sitting down, looking at the water.
"Kilgrave! You son of a bitch!" Matt moaned as he walked up the steps, "You are going to pay."
"Stop!" Kilgrave shouted at Matt. Matt slowly walked towards Kilgrave while he fought the urge to being controlled.
"Not today, you aren't. I'm going to get you and let you endure pain you've never felt before!"
"The only pain you haven't felt is love! When it backstabs you! The part where that particular person doesn't love you back!" Kilgrave coughed, "Jessica loved me, but it was my mistakes which broke our relationship. Now it will break yours too."
"She never loved you!"
"Really? I don't remember her saying I love you to you!"
"Because she keeps it deep down her!"
"Yeah? Then why is she going to hit you with a car?"
Suddenly a car turned up in Matt's senses and he dodged it. Jessica passed Matt by an inch and collided with Kilgrave. Kilgrave was impaled between a car and some metal. Matt ran towards Jessica who's car was on fire.
"How did you- how did you get here?" Matt asked.
"I took a flight to Washington not a few hours after yours." Jessica smiled.
"We need to get you out." Matt tried to remove Jessica's seatbelt but he couldn't. He noticed some blood coming out of Jessica's body but it was only a small amount. Suddenly fire ignited in the hood. "I need a knife."
Matt tried to find a gadget that had a knife but he couldn't find any. He still had a handgun in his belt but it would only help the flame. He started punching the seatbelt but it wasn't retracting.
"I can get you out, Jess. Don't worry." Matt grunted as tears came out of his eyes. "I'm not going to lose you."
"I love you." Jessica smiled, grabbing the metal ball in his belt and attaching it to his body. It flung Matt backwards just in time before the car exploded.
Matt looked at the car, flames coming out and it left him speechless. All he could do was blame himself for not being prepared for the situation. He started whimpering and kept denying that it was a good idea on her part. He should have been the one in the car.
Suddenly, a flying armour landed on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial. It stared at both crash sites and it all linked towards Matt.
"Matthew Murdock, you are under arrest for murder and treason." Stark said, "I'm sorry. But I have to do it."
"Do it." Matt muttered as he kneeled on front of Stark. He raised his hands on him, "Do what you must."
