Chapter 9; The Daughter's nightmares
*Author's note*
The narnia lullaby is the song Pitch is playing to give Jackie her nightmares so listen to that once he picks up the flute so you can feel the fear she's going through
___________
The daughters continued to live their lives normally trying to give the Seasons the best beauty and fun they could in their parents' stand while they were away at war. Emma made the Spring as beautiful and full of life as she rode upon Mirana just as her mother did. Carolynn made the Summer's hot and wild, controlling the waves of the ocean and currents of the rivers as she rode upon Draco using his flames to make the heat turn up.
Ember cooled the Summer's heat with an Autumn's breeze alongside Jackie and made the leaves turn into the true Autumn color to bring the Spirit of Autumn to everyone. Making the air smell of sweet honey suckles and pine. And when Winter came, Jackie made almost everyday a snow day as she brought a beautiful white landscape to every corner of the land.
The daughters still kept up with their studies within their kingdoms and were once in awhile checked up on by either Mother Earth or Father Time. But as the days soon turned into weeks and weeks into months, they still could not help but think and worry for their parents who had not returned from war. It was now about eight months since the parents had left without any word on what has happened in the battle field and the daughter's continuously started to worry and fear that their parents were either dead or taken prisoner.
That was when the nightmares started.
It first started with Emma the young and innocent of all the Seasonal spirits. One Autumn night, she was resting from a day of studying and preparing for the upcoming Spring, thinking of new ways to bring Spring beauty, when she started tossing and turning in her sleep. Black sand started swarming around her and gently caressing her head. Emma could swear she could hear Ravenna's voice taunting her and whispering her fears in her ear almost as if she was there.
In her dream, she could see a battle going on then she saw her mother fighting against Pitch. Blood was seeping down from her forehead, her armor was rendered and beaten down. Emma then saw Ravenna appear behind her mother with a black dagger and plunge it into her mother's back. Emma watched helplessly as she saw her mother gape and fall to the ground. Emma cried out for her mother then she jolted up from her bed screaming.
Sweat was coming down from her forehead as she was frantically looking around her room hyperventilating. Mirana's voice cried out her name and footsteps could frantically be heard coming towards her room. Mirana burst through the door and sat down in front of Emma and stroked her hair hushing her gently telling her words of comfort.
"I-I just...I just had the worst nightmare!!"
"It's okay Emma, its over now" Mirana gently soothed her as she stroked her hair gently. She then went into the drawer and said as she took out a box of matches "here, this'll help" she took out a match and swiped it across the box and then gently lit the candle. Emma looked at it in confusion and said.
"A candle?"
"Yeah, its an old trick Sandy taught us, it helps keep the nightmares away," Mirana said as she blew out the match and set the box of matches down. She turned back to Emma and continued "now talk to me, what did you see in your dream?" Emma then began to explain to her steed about her nightmare while trying to stay calm.
When she was finished, before she could start breaking down crying, Mirana gently hugged her and gently stroked down her hair and rubbed her back as she rocked her back and forth.
"Listen to me Emma, okay. Don't worry about it anymore tonight alright, it was all just a bad dream, Pitch is only messing with your head trying to make you give up on your mother. I promise you your mother is safe and fine, she's well protected and I know that she'll be home soon, just give it more time and don't give up". Emma looked up at her white horse and said.
"Can you promise me that she will come back and that she is safe?" Mirana couldn't bare to tell Emma the real truth but she didn't want to worry her anymore, she was already scared enough from the nightmare Pitch had given her.
"I can tell you this, your mother is in the best care and she is strong. You never did get to see but she has grown into quite a warrior thanks to some help from Legolas and Aubrey, she as well as the other parents will be fine, soon this war will end and your mother will soon return. Just keep the promise you made to her about keeping the Light of Hope in your heart".
Emma nodded then she rested her head back down onto her horse's chest. Mirana stroked her hair and kissed her head gingerly. She gently tucked Emma back in and kissed her forehead and wished her goodnight then she left her room. As Mirana shut the door, she leaned up against it sadly and looked up with tears in her eyes.
"Oh Manny for what I have told her, please I beg of you, please let Mary still be alive". A single tear fell down her face then she quickly walked off to rest herself and send word to the Sandman to bring Emma good dreams to erase her memories of the bad ones she had just been given.
The next one to easily fall into the submission of nightmares was Ember Pines.
Ember was lying in her bed thinking about her mother and wondering if she was alright and safe out in the battlefield. After about a few minutes she shut her eyes and gently fell asleep. The candle beside her flickered as the wind howled against it until finally blowing it out and leaving her room completely dark. Ember suddenly felt uneasy in her sleep as she heard dark tongue muttering and felt something touch her cheek faintly but deadly.
Her breathing began to sharpen and her chest rose and fell quicker than usual. Standing beside her was Ravenna who was using her magic to give Ember nightmares as she was chanting a spell Pitch taught her to give her the nightmares.
In Ember's dream, she could hear only torturous screaming as she saw her mother in a torture chamber. Her hands bounded up in chains hung outward and her legs binded so she couldn't fight back. Pitch and Ravenna stood in front of her mother, both of them smiling wickedly and darkly that it sent shivers down Ember's spine.
Her mother looked bruised, tortured and beaten, Ravenna held out her wicked talon-clawed rings to her mother's neck while Pitch just tauntingly caressed her mother's cheek with evil pity in his eyes. Autumn was frightened beyond belief as she whimpered and begged them to stop and just end her suffering. But Pitch and Ravenna just continued their seductive torture.
Slowly and painfully Ember watched as her mother was tortured to death until.....
She jolted up screaming before she saw Pitch bite into her mother like a vampire. Ember had tears running down her face and felt herself trembling with fear. Aubrey's voice cried out loudly and soon she came in and was in front of Ember giving her words of comfort and ease.
When Ember finally snapped out of her frightened daze, she embraced Aubrey with all her might crying her eyes out in fear. Aubrey was shocked at the sudden embrace and need for comfort but she wrapped her arms around her sister and whispered softly in her ear words of comfort. She rocked the sobbing spirit in her arms gently rubbing her back in soothing circles until Ember calmed down.
"What happened Ember? Please tell me, what has made you so frightened?" Ember sniffled and she said weakly and hoarsely from her sobbing.
"I-I heard her voice..... She..... she was singing to me...then he and.....my mother-she was being tortured and they....." Ember's words may not have gone together because of her nightmare, but Aubrey understood well enough to know that Ravenna had given her sister a nightmare about her and Pitch torturing her mother.
Aubrey held Ember close to her and said to her.
"Ember, your mother is stronger than that to be so easily broken, I wont allow her to be tortured nor will I allow anymore nightmares plaque your dreams anymore, come with me". She took Ember's hand and took her to the small living room.
There was a small wooden table, a roaring fire place, and a small couch built for about three people. Aubrey set Ember down and went to the kitchen and made Ember a small glass of warm chocolate milk with marshmallows. Aubrey went back to Ember and handed her the cup and Ember laid against her fox's chest. Aubrey then took a blanket and wrapped it around both her and Ember and wrapped her arms around her little sister softly humming a lullaby.
Slowly as she felt safe in her fox's embrace, hearing Aubrey's voice humming and the hot chocolate milk she slowly went back into sleep. Aubrey took the cup away and set it down on the small stood next to the couch and continued to sing to her sister. When Ember finally fell back asleep, the fireplace flickered with images of what was happening in the war then Pitch's laugh was heard from the fireplace as it suddenly blew out leaving the living room dark. Aubrey became defensive and held Ember close as her eyes phased into her fox eyes.
"I swear to you both, you so much as even give her another nightmare before I get to the battlefield, I'll kill you and rip your hearts out after I plunge my daggers into them. If you harm any of the daughters, the same fate will come to you both. As long as I'm here for Ember, you both won't ever touch her" Ember snarled.
"Good luck, fox-nymph" she heard Ravenna whisper deeply into her ear. Aubrey snarled and her fangs came out as she held out the dagger she kept close onto her shin and held it out only to see nothing there.
Just blackness.
Aubrey's senses were going nuts and she felt skittish and paranoid. She felt like they were still near and watching them. Aubrey then looked down at Ember with worried and sad eyes and held onto her tightly and whispered to her.
"I'll never let them touch you again my sister" she then revealed her nine tails and they wrapped around the both of them like a shield and soon she too fell asleep.
But the nightmares didn't end there, now it was Pitch's turn to see how he could affect the two daughters of the most powerful and dangerous seasons.
So while his wife was left for Spring and Autumn, he could get Summer and Winter, and the first one he went to was Carolynn.
Carolynn was sitting in her room sitting on the floor with her knees close to her chest and one arm wrapped around her legs while the other one was softly swaying and moving around. Her fingers softly bending and moving almost as if she were controlling something. She was making the flames from her fireplace create images and pictures of her past and of her father and Draco.
"Carolynn, I hope I'm not interrupting but its time for bed" she heard Draco tell her. Carolynn didn't move from her position but just continued to stare soullessly into the fire. She heard her door creak as it opened and when Draco saw Carolynn by the fireplace he softly sighed knowing she had been sitting there all day.
He walked up towards her and sat down beside her.
"It's been eight months Draco, and he still hasn't come home yet. He was never gone this long before". Carolynn said soullessly then she continued as she turned and faced her dragon "why hasn't he come home yet Draco? What if he's....."
"I can understand your worry for your father, but you must still hold on to the fate that he is still there fighting for you. For all of us" Draco said as he gently took her into his arms and gently rocked her back and forth gently.
Carolynn being stubborn as her father tried to hold back her sobs and her tears but slowly tears began to fall out of her face and choked sobs bursted from her mouth. Draco hugged her tighter in his strong arms gently whispering words of comfort then he thought now would be good a time as any to give her the amulet.
"Carolynn, I have something I want you to have". Carolynn looks up and separates from her dragon and watches as he unhooks a chain and in his hand dangling infront of her was the golden Sun amulet.
"What is that?"
"It's a Summer amulet, it was given to me by your father. He told me to give it to you when the time was right, it conceals your true power as well as his. Keep it close to you and it wont fail you". Even though Draco had to lie about the amulet being given by her father, he knew she needed something that she believed that was from him to let her keep the fate that he would return soon.
Draco placed it around Carolynn's neck and Carolynn gently touched the amulet and felt what she believed to be her father's fire power within it as well as her own. She turned to her dragon and hugged him again and sighed softly and said.
"I miss him Draco, I miss him so much".
"So do I Carolynn, so do I" Draco said softly as he stroked down her hair.
Draco then picked Carolynn up bridal style and carried her to her bed and tucked her in. Carolynn sighed sadly and buried her face into her pillow turning her back towards her dragon. Draco looked down at her with sympathy and stroked her cheek and kissed her temple.
"Try and get some sleep Carolynn, we start a new training session in the morning and you'll need your strength" Draco then stood up and lowered the flames brightness but still kept the fire roaring gently then he said softly as he opened the door "I love you Carolynn, sweet dreams" he then exit her room and shut the door quietly. Carolynn sighed and soon cried herself to sleep.
Later in the night, a strong wind howl opened up her windows, blowing her fiery curtains like flames in the night. The fireplace quickly blew out as something evil was within the fires turning them black then suddenly disappearing leaving only two golden eyes glowing like cat eyes in the night. An evil smirk came on his face as a dark chuckle echoed through the room.
Pitch walked out from the fireplace and walked towards Carolynn and looked down at her and mocked.
"Poor sweet Carolynn, always trying to put on a brave face, but I can easily sense your fear. You can't hide that from me that's for sure". He gently touched Carolynn's hair and brushed it out of her face and allowed black sand to come out of him and enter inside her head. He watched with great pride as he watched Carolynn's face go from a peaceful slumber to panic and fear as her nightmare began to play in her head.
Carolynn's nightmare went like this.
She was first back home in her Viking village but it was completely destroyed and in ruins like she had remembered how it was before she died on her birthday. Carolynn cried out for her father, Draco, anyone who would come to her when she heard a voice calling out to her. She ran towards the voice running faster and faster as fast as her legs could carry her. She soon came across a bloody battlefield, corpses lying everywhere, blood tainting the soil like a stain on clothes, and the horrid smell of corpses filled her senses making her want to just puke at the sight.
She then saw the horrifying picture of her father lying among the pile of corpses. She ran up towards him as fast as she could until she was down on her knees crawling up to him. Her father was covered in blood with a black dagger and three poisoned tipped black arrows embedded into his chest and side. Carolynn wept softly and cried out.
"No daddy, no-no-no-no you...you cant be-"
"I'm afraid so little flame" a taunting voice said to her. Carolynn held her father's corpse close to her to defend him when out of the darkness, Pitch came walking up to them.
Carolynn's heart stopped and her skin ran cold like Jackie's.
"What do you want?" She snarled at the Boogeyman.
"I've just came to see what I have created for you, I never would've thought that the daughter of the Summer flame's would easily succumb to sadness like this. And if this is how you react to seeing it in a dream, I wonder what would happen if I made it into a reality?" Pitch taunted her with a dark smirk. Carolynn snarled then roared out as she shot out a fireball at Pitch but he disappeared into the shadows and soon Carolynn was in nothing but darkness.
Carolynn stood up and turned around rapidly to try and see where Pitch had gone off to but he was nowhere to be found. All she could hear was his chuckle coming in and out of the darkness. She clenched up her fists tightly ready to attack him when she suddenly felt a presence behind her but before she could even turn around, Pitch had grabbed her by the throat and lifted her up.
Carolynn was squirming and desperately trying to escape his grasp but Pitch's hold was just too strong.
"You always try and put on such a brave face,"
Carolynn choked out trying desperately to get away from him as he continued "but I still know your fears my dear Summer's flame". Pitch's eyes glowed brightly as Carolynn only looked at him with fear in her eyes then before anything could happen, she shot up gasping for air.
Sweat and tears came running down her face from her nightmare and she could still feel his hand gripping tightly onto her throat. She got out of her bed and peeked outside her room to see if there were any dragons walking or guarding the hallways. When she saw there was no one there, she quickly but stealthy went to the training area to let out her anger and fear out by punching something.
Once she reached the training area, she went up to a punching bag and began to punch and kick it. All she kept thinking was about Pitch and her father being killed like that. What if he was dead right now? What if he wouldn't come back? No she couldn't believe it to be true. It was just a dream, just a dream.... JUST A DREAM!!
Her punches became so hard and so fierce that, it snapped and broke in two as it hit the wall and flames began to spark from it. Carolynn panted heavily and calmed herself down before moving onto another one and began throwing kicks at it.
"Trouble sleeping?" A deep voice said to her. She stopped kicking the bag and just simply stated.
"I'm the daughter of the Summer's flame Draco, whenever the flames get too hot its hard to put them out".
"You coming out to cool yourself at 3 in the morning isn't the truth, is it? Something's happened, what is it?" Carolynn stopped and leaned up against the bag.
She sighed softly and turned to Draco and said fearfully.
"I had a nightmare, and he actually came to me". Draco's eyes widened in fear. He walked up towards her and embraced her into a bear hug as she softly whimpered and slowly broke down crying into his chest. Draco picked Carolynn up in his arms and took her outside to the small garden where her and her dad said goodbye before he went off to war.
Draco set himself down on the hammock holding Carolynn close to him stroking down her long blonde hair then he told her.
"What he did tell you?"
Carolynn sniffled softly then began to explain to Draco what happened from hearing the voice calling out to her, to seeing her father's dead corpse and finally Pitch showing her-her fears through his eyes while choking her almost to death. Draco held Carolynn closer and rubbed her back softly and told her.
"Carolynn, listen to me, it was nothing but a bad dream, your father wouldn't give up that easily, especially if it was for your safety; think about all the other times he's left to fight off invaders of your land, did he always find away to get back to you?" Carolynn nodded softly then Draco continued "then trust me when I tell you that your father is still alive and well, you will see him again; this I promise". Carolynn looked up at Draco and hugged him and softly sobbed into his neck. Draco continued to give his little Dragoness comfort at the same time feeling that someone was watching them, his eyes phased into dragon eyes as he looked around each corner of darkness to make sure no one was still around and if it were Pitch or any sign of nightmares, he would guard Carolynn with his life and ignite the entire room with his fire.
This he swore to his Master and his friend.
In the Winter palace, Jackie was sitting in her room on her bed looking down at a picture frame that rested in her hands. It was a picture of her and her father together taken by Father Time when they were human. He told her that he taken it during the last time they had gone to their favorite lake, and since he knew of their close bond, he thought Jackie would need it while her father was away at war.
"Jackie" a voice said to her. Jackie sighed softly and laid down on her bed and turned away from the voice. She felt the bed softly lower further at her side then she felt a hand stroke her back gingerly. "Jackie, I know you miss him, but would he enjoy seeing you like this?" She turned to face Legolas and just looked up at him with sad, deepened eyes. She slowly sat up then hugged her brother and softly sobbed.
"It's been eight months Legolas, he's never been away this long before, in fact the only time he's ever left was to tend to the sheep and that was only from sunrise to sunset. What if he never comes back?"
"Jacklyn Elizabeth Frost, what kind of talk is that? Have you really lost faith in your father? Or faith in my teachings to him?" Legolas snapped gently as he pulled her away from him. Jackie shrugged and sniffled softly. Legolas understood her pain but, he wanted her to understand that Jack's mischief and tricks can help him during the war, he's cunning and if he can outsmart the dumbest troll or swift nightmare, she wouldn't have to worry so much.
"Jackie, I can tell you this, your father is one of the most cunning and mischievous spirits I know, not even the brightest fox or nymph can compete to him." Jackie softly smiled and giggled. Legolas felt better knowing he had just made his sister smile. "I can promise you this, your father won't give up until he sees you with him watching as Pitch is sealed away and Ravenna stripped of her powers. He won't give up on you, so don't you give up on him by thinking the worst, because that's what's making them stronger" he continued.
Jackie sniffled and wiped away her tears and nodded and said.
"Okay, I'll try. Hannon le Legolas". Legolas gently smiled and embraced Jackie comfortingly as he gently rocked her. He then tucked her in and kissed her forehead softly and bid her goodnight then he left the room leaving her alone while Jackie softly yawned and soon fell into a deep sleep, unaware of a shadow now loaming over her.
Pitch walked up to the Snow queen asleep on her bed, his eyes grazing down at her peaceful face and at the picture by her bedside smirking maliciously.
"Your bond is the strongest I've seen out of a Father and his daughter, to even see him hurt or afraid makes you feel the samething, Man in the moon was right to keep you together. But I'm afraid to say that won't last too long my dear Jackie". He then pulled out a dark flute from his cloak and admired the detail in the snake-like flute. Pitch then began to play a haunting but beautiful tune from it, creating black sand to come out of it and gently glide towards her.
As the black sand slowly entered into Jackie's mind, her face twitched and shrunk in fear. With her emotions controlling her powers, her room suddenly became deathly cold and ice formed among the walls. Jackie tossed and turned in her sleep as she kept hearing this music ringing in her ears on repeat never ending and never stopping.
Her nightmares soon began to form.
She was running around in complete darkness hearing the flute playing the song hauntingly. She tried to escape the darkness and find a place to hide but there was nothing but darkness. She began to hyperventilate and slowly her mind began to hear voices in her head and she shrunk down into a ball begging for the voices and the flute to stop ringing around her. But no matter what happened, it kept continuing on and on.
Pitch watched in amazement at how the flute was actually doing its job. This special flute that Pitch was playing was a new test he wanted to try out, when played; the person being affected by it will lose their minds to insanity. Hearing the voices of their fears, regrets, past events, anything that had a major impact on them or anything they fear will continue to ring in their heads until they suffer true insanity and are driven mad with fear.
And Pitch was enjoying that the most dangerous of the daughters was almost about to crack.
Back in Jackie's mind, she kept begging for the voices to stop when Pitch suddenly appeared in front of her. She gasped in fear and backed away looking up at him with pure horror and fear. Pitch only smirked and chuckled darkly at her and said.
"Oh Jackie darling, I cant tell you how happy it makes me to see you like this, I must say you are quite the ice to break, but if studied carefully, you can always find its weak point". Jackie continued to back away from Pitch when he suddenly disappeared from in front of her.
Jackie looked around like a scared little mouse when she suddenly felt a presence behind her and suddenly she was gripped by her arms and held up against a chest and she could hear Pitch's voice whisper in her ear.
"Just like your father".
Jackie's eyes widened in fear.
"What did you do to him?!" She snarled trying to get out of his grip but his hold on her tightened making her wince in pain. Pitch's dark chuckle taunted her then he said.
"Why nothing, at least not yet. You see you and your father are special to me, and I intend on not killing him but having him come with me. Using his power for a greater purpose than what the Man in the Moon wants him to do, you both control the most dangerous and uncontrollable element even more powerful than fire itself. And I intend on letting your father see that".
Jackie's eyes widened in fear at the sight of her own father using his power to destroy the world instead of giving fun and joy to the children. She couldn't see her father like that, she wouldn't allow it.
"No" she whispered fearfully.
"I won't give him much of a choice, because I plan on turning you first before him. You are going to destroy the world Jackie Frost, its been written for you through your powers".
Jackie was suddenly rendered immobile and brought to her knees as black cuffs held her down. She saw Pitch was gone and all that was left was a swarm of black sand. Jackie breathed heavily but the more she struggled, the tighter the bonds were, until the sand shot right at her.
Jackie shot herself up and saw that she was alone in her room, ice shards sticking out from the ceiling like a forest of thorns, and the room was deathly cold that even she was starting to shiver. She panted heavily and looked to the photo of her and her father. She quickly grabbed it and took off running outside.
Jackie raced out towards the small garden within the palace that was like a small sanctuary for Legolas to keep in touch with his Elvish nature, Jackie raced inside and sat down on one of the stone chairs and looked down at the picture panting heavily. She stroked her father's picture and held it close to her chest softly crying.
"Jackie?" She looked up and saw Legolas standing there. She looked down sadly and said.
"Legolas, I'm not in the mood for talking" Legolas only walked up to her and sat down beside her. He wrapped his arms around her and pressed her close to him and said.
"You know I can tell whenever you're lying, plus I could see a powerful snowstorm outside the mountain, please Jackie talk to me. I want to help you". Jackie sighed deeply and buried her face into Legolas' chest and held onto him tightly and began to cry. Legolas gladly embraced her tighter and rubbed her back gingerly. Jackie whimpered and sobbed heavier as her shoulders began to shake heavily and rapidly.
"Do you want to tell me what happened?"
Jackie sniffled softly and lifted herself off of Legolas but still clung onto him like a frightened child. Jackie then began to tell Legolas about her nightmares and Pitch telling him what he had planned for both her and her father about using their powers to destroy the Earth first starting off with her.
Legolas was horrified on the inside about what Pitch wanted to do to his sister and friend but he did his best to keep a calm demeanor about it. Legolas stroked Jackie's cheek and he swore to her,
"Jackie, I swear to you that I won't allow him to hurt you. Nor will I allow him to get your father. I took an oath to protect you both with my life, and when an Elf makes a promise, he never breaks it. I promise I'll protect you both, if Pitch or Ravenna want you, they'll have to kill me first". Jackie looked at her brother with fear but love and hugged him and sighed softly and whispered,
"How did we ever ask for such a devoted Elvish snow leopard like you?" Legolas gently smiled with a bit of a mischievous gleam in his eyes and his smile. Jackie smiled softly and leaned into Legolas and breathed in his earthy scent and was lulled back into a comforting sleep.
Legolas stroked down her hair but his eyes were locked angrily all over the garden. His protective side sharpening his senses to see if he could see any sign of black sand or the man responsible for making his sister be afraid.
'As protective as you are, I'll make sure you fail Legolas, son of Thranduil' he heard his voice taunt. It took all of his strength to not bring out his bow and arrow or phase into his snow leopard form and attack every dark corner till he brought out his corpse and showed it to his sister telling her there was nothing to fear anymore.
As all the Guardians tucked their girls in, they knew right away it wasn't safe to be in their homes nor the Tree of Life, it was time for them to take action and prepare a council for the fate of the daughters to get them somewhere safe and then they will go out to war and finally put an end to both Pitch and Ravenna's madness, for now they have crossed the line by messing with the daughter's heads into believing their parents will never return. And they swore to Manny that they would make those beings of darkness pay.
And dearly too.
