Chapter 3 - I Meet A Guy Names Peter

As soon as I stepped out of the van, Argus drove off, leaving me with two choices: run away screaming or go inside. Not wanting to leave, I entered Stark Tower, I was left speechless. Just the main lobby was huge. There were four main desks - two on one side of the room and two on the other. To my left was a seating area, and when I turned there was one on my right as well. Two elevators were in the middle, a staircase in between them. Though who would want to walk up all those flights of stairs, I had no idea. Everything was grey and blue - the colors of Stark Industries.

"Crazy isn't it?" I turned to see a boy about my age standing next to me gawking at the huge interior.

"Yeah..." I mumbled speechless. He must have just come in.

"I'm here for the hero project." He said.

"Oh, me too." I said.

"I'm Peter by the way-"

Suddenly there was a loud bang and someone fell down the stairs. It was Tony Stark, half dressed in his Iron Man armor. None of the people behind the desks did anything; it just must happen often. I turned to look at Peter who was currently stuck in a trance; staring at Tony Stark with a joyous look in his eyes. But I rushed forward to help him up, grabbing his arm as I did so. He winced and a cold shiver went through me. I had just grabbed a huge cut on his arm that he'd gotten by falling.

"Sorry..." I said, but he was looking at me weirdly, like I just started glowing and flying around. Which I hadn't by the way. I helped him up and removed my hand, gasping as my eyes got wide. The cut was gone, faded to a small scar. Had I done that?

Just then Peter decided to come out of his trance and walk over.

"Are you okay?" He asked Tony with genuine concern.

"Yeah, I'm alright kid." He said. He looked at the two of us then realization dawned on his face.

"Are you two here for my Young Heroes Initiative Project?" He asked.

"Yes," we said at the same time. He reached out his hand to me.

"Tony Stark." He said as we shook.

"I know. I'm Ashley Walker." I said. He reached for Peter's hand.

"I-I'm Peter Parker." He stammered.

"Nice to meet you kid," He turned away to pick up his armor and return it to its rightful place among his body. Peter sighed either with relief, or because he had forgotten to breath.

"Come on, follow me." Tony Stark said when he was done. We all got in one of the elevators and went up to the 42 floor. When the doors dinged, I was left speechless once again.

The room was huge first of all. Big floor to ceiling windows lined most of it. A living room was in the center, and a kitchen looking thing behind that.

"Whoa..." I said.

"I know right?" Tony said. "J.A.R.V.I.S, tell the team to come up and meet our new trainees." Jarvis? Who was Jarvis?

"Yes sir," Said a voice. "They're coming up now."

"Who's Jarvis?" I asked.

"J.A.R.V.I.S stands for Just A Rather Very Intelligent System, and he's my AI unit for the Tower. You can ask him anything. Just don't compare him to Siri, he really hates that."

"Umm... ok." I responde. You don't have that conversation every day.

DING! I turned around as the elevator doors opened and out came the Avengers - Captain America, Black Widow, Hawkey, Thor, and Bucky Barnes. They were all dressed in their gear, and when they saw us I think that they thought we were an enemy. Me and Peter both backed up as they came towards us.

"Hey!" I protested. "Were not the bad guys! We're here for the hero project thingy!" Peter nodded quickly and they backed up.

"Tony?" Hawkeye asked him.

"There here for the project. I just brought them up from the lobby." Tony Stark said. Hawkeye still looked confused.

"Then why are you in your armor?" Bucky Barns asked.

"Oh um, I was testing something. It failed." Tony said casually.

"Oh," They all backed down. "Only two?" Black Widow asked suddenly.

"Like there be more." Hawkeye said. I pretended not to hear that.

"This is Ashely and Peter," Tony said. He turned to face us. "This is everybody.

"But aren't there more of you?" Peter asked.

"Oh, um... Wanda, Bruce, and Sam are on a mission from S.H.I.E.L.D." He left it at that and took us to the elevator.

"J.A.R.V.I.S., take them to floor 38." Then the doors closed and we were going down.

"That wasn't the introduction I thought we'd get." Peter said.

"Tell me about it," I said. "So, why are you here?" I asked him.

"Spider bite," he said like that was all I needed to hear. "You?"

"Oh, um..." What was I going to say? Chiron hadn't told me what I was going to say. Thankfully the elevator doors opened, stopping me from further embarrassment.

We stepped out and were now in a long corridor filled with doors; they were all numbered. Each one was probably someone's room, though I had a good feeling most of them were empty.

"Now what?" I said to no one.

"You have room 12 Ms. Walker. Mr. Parker has room 11." The voice of J.A.R.V.I.S. said somewhere.

"Oh, uh cool." Peter said. We walked down the hallway and stopped at our doors. They were across from each other. Peter walked in with no hesitation, but I waited.

Once I went in, there was no going back. Hand on the handle, I pushed it open and sighed with relief. It wasn't a big room, nor was it that fancy. Just a bed in one coroner, and dresser and desk opposite from it. There was a door to what must have been a bathroom and another to a closet. Dark blue curtains partially covered yet another floor to ceiling window, and a stone fountain bubbling water was far off in the corner of the room. It was near no windows, but light somehow reached it and was creating a rainbow in the mist, like I'd seen in my dream with Percy...

I went over to the bed and checked an alarm clock on a nightstand. 10:08am. It was still morning? I slung my backpack off my back and opened it up. I pulled out the "Food of the Gods" as Chrion had called it and tucked it under my bed. I doubted anyone would see it there. I was about to empty the rest of my bag onto the bed, when suddenly the stone fountain in the corner shimmered and said,

"Please deposit one drachma." I had no idea what a drachma was, but as I walked over to the fountain I saw a bunch of gold coins sitting in the water. The kinds I'd seen Percy use. Was I supposed to do what he did? I reached in, pulled out a coin, and threw it into the rainbow. Suddenly a misty image of Chiron appeared.

"I see you have made it." He said. "Were there any casualties?" I was shocked for a minute or two, but then I responded.

"I- Yeah, um. What's my "power"? For when they ask. What would I say then? Cause I think I can heal people but-"

"Heal people? Hmm. Say you know you have something, but you don't know exactly what." I nodded.

"Also, why is there a fountain in here? Is there one in every room?" I asked.

"I filled out your application, sending this here as something for your room. It's how we communicate. Though you will need a drachma to use it."

"Ok, but how did you fill out my application if you didn't even know me till yesterday?"

"We've been keeping an eye on you." I didn't know how I felt about that.

"How long is this going to-" I started to say, but then the image disappeared and the voice from before said,

"Please deposit one drachma for another five minuets." I was about to when I remembered that if I ran out of coins I wouldn't be able to contact them anymore.

I left the fountain and went back over to my bed to finish unpacking my backpack.

I was just putting my sleeping bag in the closet when there was a knock at the door.

I opened it to find Black Widow, out of her gear and in plain clothes, waiting for me it looked like.

"Hi, we're all meeting upstairs to go over some things." She said in a way that meant I was involved in their conversation.

"Oh, yeah." I said, stepping out of my room and closing the door behind me.

"This place is huge," I said as we were making our way to the elevator.

"I know right? When I first got here I got turned around so many times." Black Widow said.

"Yeah, I bet." I said as she pushed the button for the 42 floor. We stepped out into the living room where everyone else was waiting, including Peter. He waved when he saw me and I joined him on the couch. No one was in their armor anymore, just plain clothes.

"Ok, so proper introductions," Tony rubbed his hands together. "Well I'm Tony Stark obviously,"

"Steve Rogers," said Captain America.

"I'm Clint Barton," Hawkeye said.

"Natasha Romanoff," Black Widow told us. "But you can call me Nat."

"Oh, and I'm Thor." Thor said, staring at something out the window. I turned to look and my heart leaped into my throat. A huge leathery bat looking thing was flying towards the building, a whip in its hands. It wasn't far off, but it would be here soon. I didn't know if the others could see it, but Thor and Peter noticed. Leaping to his feet, Peter crossed his wrists in an X. I heard a beeping sound, and he made two rock and roll signs with his hands. I didn't know what he was going to do when it got here, but Thor had a better chance as he hefted his hammer. Me? I had nothing... No wait. Hold that thought. Hawkeye's bow was laying on a coffee table near me. I had a feeling I could use it if I could get to it...

CRASH! The bat thing flew in a dove straight for me. Up close I realized it had the face of a shriveled old woman with big fangs. It's whip I realized, was actually its tail, and it looked fiery and like would hurt badly if you got hit with it.

"Huge bat!" Tony called, pulling the strings on his hoodie. A second later he was in full armor. I was amazed at how quick and flawless that had been, but while I was distracted, the creature chose to lunge at me. I would have been crushed by its grip if Clint hadn't grabbed his bow and fired an arrow. It bounced harmlessly off its thick hide, but it was enough to get its attention. The monster turned and charged, knocking him off his feet. His bow clattered out of his hands and I grabbed for it. Big mistake. I managed to get it in my grasp as the monster got me in its grasp. I was carried out of the broken window and was relieved to find another arrow locked in place on the bow.

Just then Iron Man flew out the window and blasted the monster with some kind of sonic blasters, which very inconveniently made it drop me. Though I was prepared. I fired my arrow at its bellie mid fall, and it stuck there. The monster screeched so loud I thought I'd broken my hearing. I heard Tony Stark yell my name as it flew off. Then I bonked my head on a ledge on the building. I was fairly aware of Peter flying down towards me and grabbing my waist. Then everything went dark.
