6 - A Magic Bracelet Falls On My Head
What was it like falling 38 stories? Well I can tell you one thing: it wasn't fun. I screamed right when we left the window, and didn't stop until I opened my eyes and my breathing returned to normal. I said nothing as Peter made his way towards the pier. It wasn't scary to me being up so high when I was in the "sun", but swinging through NYC? Not my favorite thing to do.
I was relieved when we finally landed a few blocks from the pier and he set me down. I let out a breath I didn't know I had been holding. I was shaking, my legs not wanting to support me.
"You ok?" Peter asked me.
"Ye-yeah, j-just never d-done that b-before." I stammered, taking in a big breath.
"I think ice cream will help-" he started, but I yelped.
"No! I mean, no." He looked at me like I just said I liked eating gum off the seats in the subway.
"I-I have..." Should I tell him about my ADHD and dyslexia? Would he tell the team? I trusted him, I finally decided.
"I have dyslexia-" I started.
"That's why you had trouble reading from Tony's hologram." He exclaimed.
"Ye-yeah," I stuttered, a little ashamed. "And I don't- can't have ice cream, because I also have ADHD - Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Ice cream will make me more hyper than I usually am." Peter just shrugged.
"Then I'll just have to get used to it." He said, taking off the "suit" he'd put on over his clothes. He then shoved it into an empty box in the alley.
"But please, don't tell the team." I told him, "I don't want them to see it as a disadvantage." Peter turned to look at me.
"I won't tell them, but just to put it out there, I don't think it's a disadvantage." I rolled my eyes.
"Try living with it," I smirked, skipping out onto the sidewalk.
"If you say so," He said, chasing after me.
A few minutes later we were walking on the dock with ice cream, despite my better wishes. Then I got an idea.
"You said we should get to know each other better, so lets each say three things about ourself." I proposed.
"Ok, I'll go first." Peter said. "I live, or lived in Queens. My best friend's name is Ned, and I go to Midtown High."
"Isn't that like a really fancy school for geniuses?" I asked.
"I guess, but it's just like any other high school. The drama, the bullies, and nerds." He said the word bullies like he was the one getting bullied.
"Ok." I said. "My turn." I thought for a moment. "I have no siblings, I like music, and..." I veered off. Something caught my eye in the water. A boy with black hair was walking out of it. "...and I know that guy." I said, running down to the beach. It was Percy. He was coming out of the surf, but obviously my ADHD brain didn't seem to wonder what he'd been doing in there.
"Percy!" I said happily. He smiled when he saw me.
"Hey Ashely, how's the tower so far?" I hesitated.
"Good. Well.. there was a monster attack like Chrion said there would be. A leathery old bad lady-"
"Oh gods... just like me..." Percy mumbled.
"What? What's just like you?" I asked him.
"The first monster that ever attacked me was a Fur- Kindley One. A big shriveled bat lady. She pretended to be my algebra teacher before she attacked me." I had no idea what he was talking about, so I changed the subject.
"How are you not wet?" I just noticed.
"Oh, my dad Poseidon. So I can stay dry if I want to. And I can breathe underwater."
"Wow, thats cool." I said. "Hey, why are you here?"
"Chiron told me to come check on you. You seem to be doing fine." He replied.
"Oh, well about that... When the bat thing attacked me, it dropped me out of the tower and I hit my head and passed out. But I recovered quickly!" I said, trying to make it sound like nothing bad had happened. Percy looked at me curiously, then shook his head and chuckled.
"You should see how quickly Will heals. One time he got stabbed with a-" He froze. I turned around to see what he was staring at, hoping it wasn't another monster. I almost dropped my ice cream when I looked. I'd completely forgotten about Peter.
"Y-y-you just came out of the water. Y-your completely d-dry- W-what?" Peter laughed nervously. He turned to me. "Who?" He asked me.
"You know him? Wait, he saw that?" Percy said to me. "He can see through the mist? I guess some people can, like my mom, but... oh gods." He rambled on like that for a few seconds, until I put my hands up.
"Hold it!" I said. They both looked at me. "Percy, Peter. Peter, Percy." I introduced them to each other, then I turned back to Peter.
"Can you keep a secret?" I asked him. He was staring at Percy in disbelief.
"Another?" He managed to say. I nodded.
"A big one," I gulped.
"Ashely, are you sure?" Percy asked behind me.
"Uh, I think. I mean, do you think it's a good idea?" I asked him.
"I guess. I mean I have this friend, Rachel. I told her about everything because she could see through the mist really well. And now she's the new oracle back at camp, So it worked out in the end... not that you should tell everyone who can see through the mist, and not that Peter's going to become the new new oracle... " He stammered. What was an oracle?
"Peter-" I started, but then there was a loud screech. The three of us turned to see not one, not two, but three shriveled bat ladies flying towards us. Percy cursed in ancient greek.
"I put you in danger, they hate me almost as much as they probably hate you. And I have a really strong scent." He said to me. Scent?
"Why? What did you do to them?" I asked instead.
"Blew up a bus-"
"Wait, weren't you that fugitive kid on the news a few years ago?" Percy sighed.
"First of all, none of that was my fault-"
He was interrupted by a loud cry from the lead bat lady. It was then that I realized I had nothing to defend myself with. Peter had his web shooting things, Percy had his pen, and again, I was defenceless.
"Look out!" Percy yelled. Too late. I would have been picked up again if he hadn't tackled me into the water. When we stood up, his sword was in his hands. I looked over at Peter. He had found a mask from a convention stand to put on. Not the best disguise, but it would work for now.
Suddenly something dropped from the sky and hit me in the head. It was a bracelet with a crossing bow and arrow. I looked confused until Percy said,
"It's a gift from your dad! Tap the charm or something!" He was currently battling one of the monsters, Peter doing the same next to my left.
The one that had Percy had saved me from was recovering behind me from crashing into the beach head first. I did as Percy said and tapped the bow and arrow symbol. Nothing. Then the bat lady behind me got up and attacked me again. In a panic, I double tapped the charm and suddenly I was holding a full length bow and a quiver appeared on my back. I didn't have time to marvel at how that had happened, because I was about to be torn apart. As fast as I could, I shot an arrow and the bat lady turned to dust. Then I turned to Percy, but he looked like he had it covered. He was blasting the monster with water, trying to push it under. Then I looked at Peter. He was desperately struggling.
The monster had pinned him down on the sand, and was trying to scratch his face off. I grabbed a rock from the beach and threw it at the monsters back. That got its attention. It lunged at me, and without thinking I rolled to the side. Now on one knee, I shot at the monster but it harmlessly deflected off its thick hide. Then something clicked into place from the last time I'd fought one of these in the tower.
"Peter!" I called over the chaos. "Get it to look up! I need to get underneath it!" He nodded and jumped up higher than I though possible. He shot a web at the monster's eyes and yanked up. Then he fell back down on his feet, while the monster looked up confused as to what just happened. I didn't hesitate, raising my bow, aiming, and firing. Then I was covered in yellow dust.
"Ew," I spit some out of my mouth.
"Awesome," Peter grinned. My eyes widened. Percy! I whipped my head around to find him dripping wet, monster dust stuck all over him.
"I thought you said you couldn't get wet!" I joked. He just rolled his eyes.
"Explanation?" Peter asked from behind me, suddenly looking a little less cheery.
"Right, uh... but first." I looked at Percy. "Why were there three? I thought there was only one?"
"The Furies, creatures of the underworld. And there's three of them-"
"Wait, the underworld? Like from greek mythology?" Peter asked. "Wait, the flying bat ladies that just attacked us are from a fictional place ... W-what?" He stammered again.
"So uh, yeah. I'm pretty sure that the greek gods are real." I told him."The stories and myths are true...?" I said to him.
"You don't sound so sure," He told me. "And you," He looked at Percy. "How did you do that with the water?"
"My dads Po-" He hesitated. "My dad's Poseidon. The God of the Sea. I'm a demigod, part mortal part god." Peter stared at him in disbelief. Percy just sighed and looked at me.
"Great, he doesn't believe us. Now what?" Percy asked.
"No, no. It's just..." Peter took a deep breath and closed his eyes. When he opened them again, his pupils looked a little brighter. "I believe you." He said.
"What?" I said confused. "Just like that?"
"Yeah what?" Percy said.
"I-" he started. "I have like a sixth sense. It tells me when I'm in danger, and, for example, when to trust someone."
"Thats sick man," Percy said. Peter blushed.
"I guess, but sometimes I wish I were normal. My hearing advanced, so loud things really hurt." He chuckled. "It's just a lot to take in."
"Tell me about it," I said as Percy took his pens cap out of his pocket. He touched it to his sword and suddenly it shrank back down into pen form. Then something occurred to me.
"Hey, how do I...?" I pointed at my bow and quiver on my back.
"Try thinking about them looking like the bracelet." Percy suggested. I did and suddenly there was a popping sound. I looked back at my wrist and the bracelet was back. Peter was staring.
"How did you..." He said. "But that was just...Ugg forget it." He finally said. Then I remembered something Tony had said. Don't leave the tower.
"What time is it?" I asked frantically. Peter pulled out his phone and Percy backed away from it slightly.
"It's 5:42. Oh right, diner." Peter mumbled the last bit to himself. Then he looked over at Percy.
"Are you ok?" He asked him. Percy's eyes were glued to the phone in his hands.
"Um, yeah." He gulped. "It's just that demigods and technology don't mix well. They tend to attract monsters." Chrion had said something like that, which is why Leo had made me my own phone.
"I should go." Percy said. "I don't wanna put you guys in more danger then you're already gonna get in."
"Bye," I waved as he sprinted back into the waves and disappeared. Then I looked at Peter.
"We should get back," I told him.
"Agreed." He said.
