Chapter 8: When auditioning for a highschool musical

Wednesday rolled around too quick for comfort, and since it was a half day, the bell rang quickly enough signifying that we should hurry to our various clubs.

So there I was, sneaking adoring gazes at Isaac while avoiding Dami's murderous glare, wondering exactly what I had gotten myself into.

"So for the lead acting roles, we've got Mimi playing Cara, and Jesam playing Daniel. Tolu will be Hugh, Sam will be the talking lampstand..." Luke continued, calling out from a list of names.

Soon enough, it was time for the rehearsal for the duet. I looked at my music sheet, smiling at the songs.

It just had to be Rewrite the stars. To be quite honest I loved that song. And I was stoked to sing it.

The boys were called on one by one, and I was pleasantly surprised at their nice baritone voices, even Isaac.

None of them quite suited the song, though.

When I walked up to the stage I felt very nervous because a lot of juniors and seniors were watching me, the weird, clumsy Mexican. Dami was sneering at me and it only intensified my nervousness. Yet, I tried.

What if we rewrite the stars?

Say you were made to be mine?

Nothing could keep us apart.

You'd be the one I was meant to find.

It's up to you,

And it's up to me,

No one can say what we get to be,

So why don't we rewrite the stars,

Say that the world can be ours,

Tonight.

I finished shakily, wiping my sweaty palms on my skirt and walking off.

I received a customary round of applause before Dami walked in front of the class with her usual grace and poise.

Shouts and yells of approval rang out, and I sunk into my chair. Of course they would like her, she was the queen of the school.

Who did I possibly think I was, that I would have gotten a part in the duet?

I sort of had this weird hope that Isaac and I would have sung it together, and then maybe after the song he'd kiss me. What a joke.

After Dami sang, there was a thunderous applause, and I joined in, forcing a smile on my face.

Her voice was way more suitable for the song, even I could admit it. I caught her vindictive smirk as she walked back to her seat, and I gave her a thumbs up, which threw her off balance.

Stacey then informed everyone that those who got the solo and duet would be announced the next week, and that everyone who signed up for the dance would participate in it, but those who couldn't keep up during rehearsals would be eliminated.

With a bummed look, I left as soon as the meeting was called off. I felt someone bump into me from behind, causing me to lose balance and trip. Thankfully a nice student helped me up.

When Dami passed, I rolled my eyes. "Try to be a little less predictable next time, okay?"

"What?" She asked, turning around.

I ignored her and kept on walking. She wasn't done with me, though. She grabbed me and shoved me into a wall. "What did you say?"

Students had gathered.

"Omo see fight o. Wey your phone?" I heard someone say.

"Dami leave me alone." I said.

"Oh you can't mouth off now, huh?" She asked, rolling her eyes while still holding my shirt aggressively.

I saw a button pop and fall to the ground. Well damn.

"I seriously don't want to get into this with you right now." I said, feeling strangely exposed.

"You-" she didn't get to finish her sentence as she was ripped off me in the next second.

"What is wrong with you?" Isaac asker harshly, eyeing Dami with venom.

In a second, Caleb also was at my side. "Mavis are you okay?" He asked in concern.

"Isaac I no know which kind winch she give you make you chop, commot for road, I no get your strength." Dami said angrily, trying to push past him.

"If you touch her, ehn, if you touch her, be sure that you won't be coming back to this school tomorrow." Isaac threatened, causing a frown to appear on my face.

What did he mean?

Dami, on the other hand, got the message clearly, because her eyes widened, and she took a step back.

"God I fucking hate you." Dami spat at me, before turning and leaving.

Isaac ignored her and looked around at the crowed of students, sensing my discomfort at being the centre of attention.

"Don't you all have better things to do? Get back to your clubs now!" He said with authority, and the students scampered off in seconds.

He held my hand, though his eyes were set on Caleb's hand on my shoulder. "That includes you."

"I have to make sure she's okay." Caleb argued.

"She'll be fine. Get back to your club." He said.

I noticed a muscle ticking in his jaw, yet he nodded and walked off.

"What was that all about?" I asked Isaac, extremely confused.

"What was what about?" He said, playing dumb.

"You know what I'm talking about." I answered.

"I'm the Senior prefect. Everyone has to do what I say. Next to the principal I'm the most powerful person in school." He explained.

My eyebrows went up. "Is that like, a thing?"

His lips turned up in amusement. "Yes, it's a thing."

"What happens if they don't do what you say?" I asked.

"They will." He answered, jaw set. I knew not to push it further.

"So where to from here? It seems all the other clubs are still holding their meetings.

"There's only ten minutes till school closes. Do you want to go up to the library?" He asked.

I brightened up at the sound of books. "Of course."

He walked behind me as we ascended the stairs to the last floor. The school was a gigantic four storey building, structured in a circle. The nursery was on the ground floor, the primary school classes occupied the first floor, the junior secondary school classes occupied the second, while the seniors occupied the third. The music lab was also on the third floor next to the SS1 social science class. The fourth floor housed the large library, chemistry, physics, biology and geography laboratories.

At the entrance of the school, right after the gate, there was a large event hall for school functions. It was quite ostentatious, it even had a chandelier.

The school had a huge football field behind it. There was a separate building for those who lived in the school, they were called boarders.

The boarders had a basketball and volleyball field for their personal entertainment, but they usually allowed day students to play there once in a while.

The library was empty when we got there, save for the sleeping librarian.

I sat at a relatively secluded place and picked a book out from the stack above.

To kill a mockingbird.

"So, have you read it before?" Isaac asked.

"No, funny enough. Have you?"

"I have. It-"

"Please don't spoil it for me!" I interrupted hastily, causing him to chuckle.

"I wasn't going to."

"Good." I said, smiling. I flipped through the pages mindlessly for a few moments before looking up, wanting to ask if it would be possible for me to borrow the book.

The words, however, shrivelled up in my mouth the moment I met his gaze.

I'd never seen such intensity on a guy's face before.

Much less have that intensity directed at me.

"Why are you looking at me like that?" I asked nervously, feeling my heartbeat pick up. I found extremely strange how I could feel so nervous around Isaac, and yet, his presence felt more like home.

He didn't respond for a few moments, then he snapped out of the daze. "What?"

"I asked why you were looking at me like that." I said, furrowing my brows.

"Oh, I just think you're very beautiful." He replied.

Heat rushed to my cheeks at his words, causing me to blush and look away, trying to steady my heartbeat which was freaking out completely due to his words.

It wasn't so much what he said as his he said it. He said it like he believed it, like I was truly beautiful. Like he willed me to believe it too.

And somehow, that made all the difference.

The bell rung, again, breaking the spell. Curse that bell. And Isaac suggested we go downstairs considering our drivers were most likely already waiting for us.

I followed suit, still smiling. Although, a niggling feeling in my gut told me, there was more to his look than he was willing to tell me.
