Chapter 5: When at a highschool party
After school, I chatted with Faith and she invited me over to her party on Friday. To be very honest, I hadn't had the best experience with alcohol. I was a lightweight, and usually turned super emotional when inebriated. Two very embarrassing qualities.
But then she told me Dami would be there as well as Isaac. And somehow the thought made me say yes. I didn't understand my reaction, considering the fact that my presence wouldn't exactly overshadow Dami's, she would most likely outshine me. And I had no idea what drama she would cause if she saw me talking to Isaac.
Still, I decided to go. And when Friday rolled around, I actually felt a bit of anticipation in view of the night's events.
I got dressed in a pair of sweatpants, a sleeveless tank top and a hoodie, and for footwear, black vans.
I did my hair up in a simple ponytail and laid my edges.
Going downstairs from my room, I stooped short at the sigh of my father downstairs.
"Oh, dad, hey." I greeted nervously. In spite of the fact that my parents weren't together, my dad had inherited some certain traits from my Mexican mother.
"Mavis, honey. How are you?" He asked.
"I'm good, dad." I responded, chuckling nervously.
"Where are you going all dressed up." He asked, narrowing his eyes suspiciously.
"Oh, I didn't know you were coming home tonight. So I accepted Faith's invitation to sleepover at her house." I replied.
"Just both of you?" He asked, still suspicious.
"A few other girls from school will be there." I answered vaguely.
He nodded thoughtfully and then gave me the pass to go.
Score! I thought excitedly. He would never have let me two steps out of the door if he knew what my true intentions were.
I felt the familiar sting in my guy that said, bad, Mavis! For lying to my dad. But I really wanted to go to that party, so it was justified in my teen universe.
On getting to Faith's house, I was dismayed to find out that I was underdressed. Most of my classmates took the opportunity to show off their impressive closets at Faith's party, and it seemed I was the only one in casual clothes, not to talk of sweats.
I spotted a lot of my classmates in shiny dresses loosening up to the music. They were impressive dancers, unsurprisingly, considering everyone in the school was perfect.
Except me, that is.
Well then.
I spotted the host leaning against a wall and chatting with a handsome guy. Then again everyone in this country was so damn attractive, of course he would be handsome.
"Hey!" I greeted cheerfully, then cursed myself at the overly cheerful tone of my voice.
"Hey, Mavis. What's up girl?" Faith replied, hugging me. I savoured the feeling for a few moments before breaking away.
She was dressed in a grey, condom gown that went down to her thighs, and her shoes matched mine.
"I'm alright, have you seen Isaac?" I asked, predictably.
"Yeah he's over there," she explained, pointing at the kitchen.
"Okay, sis. Thanks." I replied, not wanting to intrude on her time with the faceless dude any longer.
I maneuvered between Samuel and some random girl getting handsy, more than a few inebriated teenagers whom I'd never seen in my life, and headed towards the direction Faith pointed me in.
True to her word, Isaac was seated on a large couch, with Caleb, two other guys I didn't know, Dami on his left, and some girls I had probably seen around school.
I felt awkward intruding because they were obviously conversing, but it was already too late to turn back because they had spotted me.
"Mavis! Come join us!" Caleb called loudly over the music, while Isaac extended his hand towards me. Dami glared at me, as expected, and the others just watched me curiously.
"Hey, how are you?" Isaac whispered into my ear, after not-so-subtly nudging Dami to make space for me beside him.
She wasn't very happy about that, I'll leave it at that.
Soon enough, we were joined by Eric, Tolu and Mimi, and I felt a bit more comfortable around familiar faces.
"Now that the runaway musketeers are back from their threesome, can we continue our game?" One of the unfamiliar guys asked, earning a kick from Mimi and slaps on the head from the other guys.
"What game?" I asked stupidly.
"We were just playing truth or dare." Isaac answered, I spotted Dami roll her eyes in the corner and bit down my annoyance. She really was starting to get on my nerves.
As the music blared on and different kids danced around in Faith's large house, I and the others arranged ourselves into a comfy circle in our own little corner.
I sat between Isaac and Caleb, with Dami on Isaac's other side, the unfamiliar guy who broke the silence sat beside her, and the other one who quietly watched everything with humor sat beside Caleb, the other girls alternated themselves between Tolu and Eric, and Mimi decided to position herself between Caleb and the other guy, such that the sexes were alternating till it got back to Isaac.
Emptying his bottle, Caleb placed it down in the middle of the group and spun.
It landed with the head facing Dami and the bottom facing Tolu.
Obviously, from what I'd read in teen fiction novels and my little experience at my old school, the person who was faced with the head would be asked by the person who was faced with the bottom.
"Truth or Dare, Dami?" Tolu asked, smiling.
"Dare."
"I dare you to twerk on the kitchen counter." He said with a half smile.
Now Faith's house was constructed in such a way that the living room and the kitchen had no barrier wall, so it was basically an open space, with the kitchen counter indicating where the kitchen started. Obviously everyone would see her twerk if she did it. A petty part of me hoped she couldn't.
As luck would have it, booty language came on the speakers, and she walked over to the counter, climbing it easily.
I groaned inwardly, why did she have to be so perfect at everything?
She twerked for half the song, earning shouts and cheers from our classmates and the science boys, before coming down with grace.
I noticed Isaac didn't turn once, and I wondered why that made me smile.
She came back to the group and sat down in her position, spinning the bottle.
The bottom landed on me and the top at the unfamiliar guy who sat beside Mimi.
Feeling awkward, I asked, "Truth or Dare?"
"Truth." He answered with a smirk.
I frowned slightly, I couldn't ask him any personal questions because I had absolutely no idea who he was.
"What's your name?" I asked instead, feeling my neck heat up at how embarrassing I sounded.
I heard Dami snort and mention something along the lines of lame, but I ignored her totally.
Everyone chuckled at the confused look on the guy's face, it was obvious he wasn't used to people having no idea who he was.
"My name is Luke." He said. I nodded, and then said the most awkward thing to ever grace the planet.
"Cool beans."
Can I for once, just not embarrass myself totally in civilised company?
Apparently the group appreciated my awkward vocabulary and they once again chuckled at my expense.
The game got more steamy as Mimi kissed one of the unknown girls, also known as Stacey. And Eric performed a strip tease.
Yum.
The bottle only fell on me occasionally as I was forced to reveal embarrassing qualities about myself that I had desperately wanted to keep hidden.
They were soon forgotten, though, when everyone was slightly buzzed, and the game shifted into Never Have I ever.
"Never have I ever... Smoked weed." Dami said, shrugging.
I, along with Tolu, Mimi and Luke took a drink out of our newly acquired disposable cups of beer.
Isaac quirked an amused brow at me, and whispered, "This I've got to see."
"Never have I ever... Serenaded someone." The other unfamiliar guy, whose name was Yusuf, said.
Again, Luke and Mimi drank, I frowned in confusion, and Caleb drank too, causing me to roll my eyes.
"Never have I ever... Kissed someone of the same sex." Tolu said, considering unfamiliar female no 2, also known as Tamara, was passed out, drunk as hell.
Basically all the other girls in the group drank, except me. Caleb drank too, causing many eyebrows to go up.
"I was drunk and confused, okay?" He explained, looking flustered.
"It's okay, C. We aren't judging." Isaac replied with a smile that made my heart flip.
It went on and on till it got to my turn. I could tell they wouldn't fathom what I was about to say.
Really, when looked at objectively, it seemed kind of stupid.
I'd been to parties, kinda, hung around the opposite sex, sort of, done weed, gotten drunk, and basically done every teenage thing to do.
Except been in a real relationship.
And I'd never been kissed.
Unless you counted Johnny Dane's sloppy lips in third grade during seven minutes in heaven.
I actually don't know what propelled me to admit such an embarrassing fact about myself amidst teenagers I barely knew, save for a familiar few.
Perhaps it was the alcohol, or we were all in the mood to spill some secrets. I wasn't quite sure.
But the words left my mouth way before I could stop them.
"Never have I ever... Had a real kiss."

A/N
It's 1:20am and I really should be asleep or studying for my exam on Monday. But the inspiration came and I just knew I had to finish this chapter. I'm sorry it actually took this long😫
->booty language is a song by a Nigerian artist whose name I can't quite remember now because I'm exhausted with a capital E.
There are a lot of errors, no doubt. I'm half asleep right now. Still.
Tell me what you think.
