Wings
Blaze stared at me, as I was regretting my decision. I wondered how he would react to the sudden question. His voice broke the the silence.
"How?"
I looked up, surprised.
"What did you say?" I asked.
"How?" He said again."Did you guess?"
I hesitated. I didn't want him to get the wrong idea. I opened my mouth slightly, but no words came out. A few heartbeats passed. I opened my mouth again, a little wider.
"So... Either that you're secretly a girl or you aren't a person."
The lame answer lingered in the atmosphere. Blaze sighed. I waited to see what would happen next. He said, "I'm not a human, but I'm a guy." I shifted my eyes to the ground, to his face and to the ground again. I was an idiot. I just shrugged when he gave me a look that was seeking answers. "You know," I said, "I don't do well under pressure.". Silence was what I got in return. Nothing but the regular beeps of the heart beat rate machine made a sound. "It all started...". I didn't expect that answer from him. "From when I was very little.". Something in his voice alerted me. It was a tone I had heard before. It was someone's voice, saying their regrets, their mistakes, their losses. He gave a small sigh, then continued. "I was taken from my parents, to be something of show. I tried to escape, many times. But each and every time, I never succeeded. I was born a phoenix. I lived like a caged animal. It was when I was sold to a lottery business owner. All I could hear was the sounds of people talking. Suddenly, the fire proof cloth on my cage was lifted. I braced myself for what was coming next. Instead, when I looked up, the owner was nowhere to be seen. Just the face of a girl with red eyes and red hair. I wondered what she was doing here. She turned to the owner and said, "I'll take him here please.". Soon, I was taken out of the stuffy little tent I was put in. She carried me up to a big tree and took off the cover. She just smiled after that and released the lock on the cage. Before I could react, I was pushed out. I...I was free, for the first time in my life, I was free. I could almost not believe it. I gave out a loud song of joy and spread my wings. As I tried to fly, I realised that I had no idea how. I clumsily crashed into the tree leaves, which, in turn, started to catch fire from my wings. I plummeted towards the ground. The girl acted quickly and caught me in her jacket. Immediately, the jacket began to smoulder. As bits of the burning wood from the tree started raining down, the danger in it was clear. If a large branch hit me or the girl, we would both be hurt, maybe knocked out. Ignoring the burns, the girl scooped me up in her arms and ran out. But as we headed towards a clear bit, a firey branch bigger than a car came rushing down above us. Quickly, the girl flung me towards the outside area. As the tree fell, I looked back, astonished by the decision that she had made. There was a flash of wings. Feathers were everywhere. The girl was alright. And on her back were a pair of wings." I looked at him. Blaze looked back. "She was my salvation. From there, I finally lived.". I closed my eyes. I then opened them again. "What's the reason for telling me this?" I asked. Blaze tilted his head. "To make you understand."
