08: This is Halloween
A month had passed and Juliana found that trying to track Vicki really didn't work. Juliana couldn't focus on finding Vicki, who is rumored to be on a bender. Sheila said that the tracking won't work is with a spell or if the person is dead.
She had volleyball practice, schoolwork, homework, and magic lessons with Sheila and Bonnie (who accepted the fact that she was a witch), to deal with.
She woke up to hearing someone rummaging through her desk drawers. She got out of bed to see a dark-haired girl holding Adrienne's grimoire.
"What are you doing?" Juliana asked harshly.
The girl stood up and looked at Juliana.
Juliana was looking at...herself.
The girl was wearing a rather nice looking white frilly dress with floral patterns on it. It was probably from the 1800s or maybe 1900s. Her hair was curly and she wore white arm warmers.
"Who are you?" Juliana asked. She had the feeling she knew.
"I'm Adrienne. Isn't that obvious?" Adrienne asked. She looked at the grimoire. "It's nice that they kept it good condition."
"They?" asked Juliana.
"Damon and Stefan," said Adrienne, speaking their names rather spitefully. She set aside the grimoire and picked up a framed picture of Juliana and Jeremy, before he was in that depression. She gave a cruel smile, "How cruel Fate can be. They take away my brother and Fate decides to place him here, back in the same town that took him away. Twins too, I presume?"
"Y-yes," Juliana stuttered. Why was Adrienne here? What did she want? How did she get in?
"Another cruel way Fate can be," Adrienne said.
"Are we related in some way?" Juliana asked.
"No," said Adrienne. "They wiped my family tree off the face of the earth."
"How about doppelgӓngers?" Juliana asked.
"Not even close," Adrienne said. "You and your brother are reincarnates. It's when Fate realizes how cruel of an end that someone had and decided to give them a second chance to relive their life."
"How did your brother...die?" Juliana asked.
"Alistair covered for me. The townspeople found out I was a witch and he said that he was one to protect me. They tore him to shreds. I doomed myself trying to find a way to bring him back to life. I trusted Katherine to help me, but she'd rather lay with Damon and Stefan than help me bring my brother back," Adrienne explained bitterly.
"I'm sorry about that happened to you," Juliana said. "Why are you here?"
"I'm here to tell you to not trust Damon Salvatore," Adrienne said firmly.
"Why shouldn't I?" asked Juliana.
"Oh, you know, because he turned Vicki Donovan into a vampire and let her loose. She's still out there. He also wanted you to track me down so he can kill me," Adrienne said, "But I'm already dead, so he's to late on that."
"You're dead?" asked Juliana.
"Don't act so surprised. You know that I'm dead. I hung myself over at what is horribly named the Witch Burial Ground," Adrienne explained. "He wants to bring Katherine back, so he's after the Bennet talisman." She picked up another picture and looked at it. "She looks like Katherine. She must be a doppelgӓnger."
"You mean my sister?" Juliana asked.
"I'm sorry," said Adrienne.
"Why? Elena is very nice," Juliana defended.
Adrienne looked at the closed bedroom door, and then got in Juliana's face to order, "Wake up!"
Juliana woke up, confused and disorientated. Elena barged in, "Oh, good, you're up. God, why is it cold in here?" She looked at the open window and went to close it, but Juliana was sure that it had been closed when she went to sleep.
She got out of bed and went to the bathroom, but Jeremy was up brushing his teeth. She grimaced, "Oh, sorry."
"Oh, no, it's cool, Lia. I'm done," said Jeremy.
"What are you doing up so early?" Juliana asked.
"I'm going to the police station. They're organizing the search party for Vicki, so..." Jeremy explained.
"But she's a vampire. She wants to drink people's blood," Juliana said.
"I know, but I think I might be able to find her and bring her back," Jeremy said. "She might not want to drink my blood."
Juliana guessed that made sense. "Hey, if people found out that I was a witch, would you lie to cover for me, to make sure that I don't get killed?"
"No, you annoy me," Jeremy replied.
"All right," Juliana replied, a little taken aback by that. She went into the bathroom.
"I would," Jeremy said, before Juliana could close the door. "Lie to protect you, if it came to that." Juliana smiled, and before she fully closed the door, Jeremy said, "Hey, do you have the pocket watch? I can't find it."
Juliana frowned, "No. I don't have it."
Jeremy seemed to frown and Juliana closed the bathroom door.
Juliana noticed that Sydney was wearing a voodoo doll costume, with black and red knee socks and black high-tops. There was even a voodoo doll on a chain attached to her wrist. "My English teacher said that there's extra-credit if we dress up for Halloween."
Juliana nodded, "Cool."
Sydney asked, "Where's your brother?"
"He's out looking for Vicki," Juliana responded.
Sydney rolled her eyes. "What exactly are they to each other?"
"They used to have sex," Juliana replied.
"Oh," Sydney said, looking at her shoes. Abigail rolled her eyes and adjusted one of her shoes that had charms on it. Corey chuckled.
It was official...Sydney had a crush on Jeremy.
At least Sydney was around Jeremy's age and not a drug addict, or a vampire.
"Hey, are you going to the Halloween dance?" Corey asked Juliana.
"Nah, dances aren't my thing, sorry," Juliana replied.
Corey actually looked a little dejected.
"Well, we're going if you happen to change your mind," Abigail said.
The bell rang and they walked away. Juliana turned and watched as Abigail put her arm around Corey's shoulders, and for a moment, Juliana wondered if Corey wanted her to go with him.
Juliana went home. Jeremy was still out looking for Vicki, so Juliana warmed up a can of chicken noodle soup, got some chocolate chip cookies, and put the movie Trick r' Treat on to watch.
At some point during the movie, she ended up falling asleep.
She woke up to see that Adrienne was sitting on the couch. She was still wearing that dress.
"I don't understand a single thing that man is singing," Adrienne said.
This was probably what having an identical twin sister was like.
"What are you doing here?" Juliana asked.
"I think I'm supposed to help you," Adrienne said. "I need to find peace and I think helping you will help me find it, as atonement."
"Atonement?" asked Juliana.
"I was a terrible person before I died. The Bright World wouldn't let me enter, so I'm stuck on the Other Side, and then I saw you. I think helping you will help me get there and to Cyril."
"Who's Cyril?" asked Juliana.
"You ask a lot of questions," Adrienne said. "You need to go to the Halloween dance."
"Why?" asked Juliana.
"The vampire is going to be there," said Adrienne. "Tell Bonnie to never give Damon her talisman when you see her. Wake up!"
Juliana woke up on the couch and Elena walked in. "You left the front door open again."
"I thought I had closed it," Juliana said, rubbing her eyes. She followed Elena into the kitchen, where Jeremy was getting some cookies.
"Hey," greeted Elena. "So, um, do you two want to hang out tonight? We could go to the, uh, Halloween thing as school. Could be fun!"
Juliana nodded, "Yeah. I guess."
"Cool, sure, sounds uh...sounds fun. Can't wait," replied Jeremy. He didn't even sound that enthused by it.
"I know you're upset about Vicki, especially with her being a vampire," said Elena. "I heard she called Matt. She wants to see you, but you can't be with her. She needs to get better. It's for the best."
"I know that," Jeremy said, sounding angry. "Look, for months after Mom and Dad died, I felt like crap, like 'nothing really even mattered' crap. I stood on that edge, staring down at the car, knowing that they were in there, dead, and I couldn't even do anything to save them. I get these moments and things started to feel just a little bit better, and Vicki was in every single of 'em. Then I started to get actual help, and things aren't looking to bad. So quit trying to condescend at me about what is and isn't best for me."
They finally arrived at the carnival. Juliana wore a, what the label had called Dark Day Dreamer Alice in Wonderland costume, which consisted of striped leggings and black combat boots. The dress was dark blue with a card suit patterns on it.
Jeremy wore a regular jacket with the hood pulled up and he scared some kids, causing them to scream.
Elena smacked a laughing Jeremy.
Matt came up, wearing a doctor's costume, and asked, "You went with last year's costume too, huh?"
Elena said, "Yeah. I didn't know that I was coming 'til an hour ago," said Elena.
"Me neither," Matt looked at Juliana and Jeremy, "Alice in Wonderland and you're going as...you?"
"He's going as a serial killer," Juliana said quickly. "They look like regular people."
"Yeah, okay," said Matt.
Juliana and Jeremy walked off. Jeremy seemed bored.
"Hey, what do you think about getting a dog?" Juliana asked Jeremy.
"Depends on the dog, I guess," Jeremy replied.
"How about a pug? I want to name it Benji," Juliana said.
"Benji?" asked Jeremy.
"Yeah, you know...Good Charlotte?" replied Juliana.
Jeremy obviously blanked on the name, "I can't remember."
Juliana stayed silent, "Well, I still want to get a pug and name it Benji."
"Ask Jenna," Jeremy said.
Juliana nodded, "Right."
Jeremy wandered off, so Juliana was left to her own devices. She managed to spot Bonnie, who was wearing a witch's costume and went to her.
"Bonnie!" Juliana said.
Bonnie looked startled, "Lia, hey."
"Don't let Damon take that necklace," Juliana said.
"What? Why?" asked Bonnie.
"I...just know that he wants to take it from you," responded Juliana.
"Okay," replied Bonnie.
"I'm glad that you came," Abigail greeted happily. She was wearing a zombie school girl costume. "The others are over there." She took Juliana's arm and led her over to Corey, who was leaning against the wall. He was wearing some ghost costume.
"So, what made you go with the ghost costume?" Juliana asked, curious.
"I had leukemia and I thought it would be funny to be a ghost," Corey said.
"How did your dad take it?" Juliana asked.
"He laughed about it," Corey replied with a shrug.
Juliana looked around and spotted Adrienne making her way through the crowd. "I'll be right back."
She followed after Adrienne, who seemed to be leading her somewhere. She left the school and followed Adrienne to the buses.
"Adrienne?" Juliana whispered, feeling foolish, doing so. She wasn't asleep. At least, she was sure she wasn't asleep.
Adrienne turned and handed her a locket that had blue flowers on it. There was even writing on it that said: Forget Me Not. It didn't even have a chain to it.
"Here, take this," Adrienne said. "It used to be mine."
"Thanks?" Juliana replied confused.
"Lia?" called Corey.
Juliana turned to look at him, "Yeah?"
"I thought I heard you talking to a woman," Corey said.
So, he heard Adrienne too.
"Nah, I was just talking to myself," Juliana replied.
"What do you have there?" asked Corey.
Juliana held up the locket, "I found this."
"Strange," Corey said. "I thought I heard a woman tell you to take it because it used to be hers."
"Oh," said Juliana.
"Is everything okay?" asked Corey. "I don't think talking to yourself is a good sign."
"I need expert advice," Juliana joked.
Corey laughed, but he got serious. "Is everything okay? You were acting weird all day."
"Do you believe in ghosts?" Juliana asked.
Corey looked at his costume, "Well, I am dressed as one. Why?"
Juliana turned and looked at Vicki. "Vicki?"
The vampire was standing there, just like Adrienne said that Vicki would.
Corey seemed confused. "Where have you been?"
Vicki ignored him, and lunged at Juliana, shoving Corey to the side, and taking the younger girl by the throat and slamming her in the bus. It was rather weird, considering that Juliana was at least two inches taller than Vicki. However, Vicki had vampire strength on her side.
"Didn't your parents tell you to never meddle in someone else's love-life?" snarled Vicki.
Vicki got hit over the head with a board and Elena was standing there.
"Run you two!" Elena ordered.
Vicki turned, grabbed Elena and tossed her into a pile of garbage. She focused on Corey, and seemed ready to grab him.
Corey backed up and Juliana used telekinesis to send Vicki falling backwards into a bus.
Stefan appeared and grabbed Vicki. Juliana released Vicki from the telekinetic hold she had on Vicki.
"Go! Get inside!" ordered Stefan.
Vicki threw Stefan off of her and disappeared under a bus.
Elena grabbed Juliana's arm and dragged her towards the entrance of the school.
Corey followed after and then he got tossed aside, along with Juliana. Vicki grabbed Elena and bit into her shoulder, causing Elena to scream. Then Vicki released Elena's shoulder as a stake protruded from her chest.
Vicki seemed to be in shock, even after Stefan removed the stake.
Something seemed really sad about the situation.
Vicki didn't ask to be a vampire; she was innocent in this situation, driven by her own hatred over Juliana and Elena meddling in Jeremy's love-life, even though it was mostly Jeremy's own doing.
Vicki dropped to the ground, dead.
"You both should get inside," Elena said, softly. She looked at Corey, "And you need to—"
"Not tell anyone that your boyfriend staked a vampire," Corey finished. "Yeah, I got it."
Elena looked surprised and looked at Juliana, who was shaking from adrenaline. "Go, on inside. You need to tell Jeremy what happened."
They went inside and Corey looked at Juliana. "Did you really telekinetically push Vicki into a bus?"
"No," replied Juliana. Corey gave her a blank look. "Yes, I'm a witch. Don't tell anyone."
"All right," Corey replied. "That's cool, I guess."
After taking a shower, Juliana found Jeremy in his room. He was staring at the wall. He seemed to still be reeling from the fact that Vicki had died, after attacking Juliana and Corey.
"What's wrong?" Juliana asked.
"She's dead," Jeremy said. "Vicki's dead."
"I'm sorry," Juliana told him. "But she attacked me and Elena..."
"Not that," replied Jeremy. "I get why Stefan staked her, but why does everybody have to die on me?"
Juliana went to take Jeremy in her arms. "I don't know but I know that Fate is a bitch. One day—"
"Don't tell me that things will get better," Jeremy said.
"I was actually going to say, 'one day, we're going to die and our lives sucking won't even matter in the end,'" Juliana told him.
"Can you promise me one thing?" Jeremy asked.
"Yes, anything," Juliana responded.
"Promise me that you won't die," Jeremy replied.
Juliana nodded, "I promise I won't die, Jer."
