Chapter 30: The Bitter Escape
Alix's POV:
"Stop screaming! There is no one in this tunnel that will help us."
After a few more agonizing moments, the others stopped pleading for help. My wrists were sore from the tight cuffs that kept me secure to the wall. The foul smell of rotting corpses and blood permitted the air. I knew that if we couldn't escape soon we would be joining the skeletons on the floor.
"What are we going to do," Wolf boy asked, his voice was rough from yelling.
"How the hell am I supposed to know!" I snapped.
This wasn't exactly how I expected my Friday night to go. Earlier today, Chelsea, a friend of my brother, asked me out on a date. She had a pretty smile and a likable personality- at the time I couldn't think of a reason to say no. As the seconds ticked by I imagined what I would tell her if I ever saw her again. Sorry that I couldn't make it to our date, my best friend/ charge/ crush decided to go save her potential soulmate and her crazy aunt forced me to tag along. For some reason I didn't believe that would go over well.
"Listen Alix, we're all stressed out but you're the only one who can really know if we make it out or not," Dmitri said.
I didn't know if I liked him better or worse when he was pretending to be his brother. Back then, I could hate him because he was a jerk who hurt Caddie. Now, I didn't know who he was. I peered into the future, all I saw was darkness. Looking around the dark confinements of the cell, I realized that this was going to be my fate.
"I don't see anything," I told them in a weak voice.
"What do you mean? You have to have seen something!" Cam barked.
I wish I would have. I had never seen complete darkness before, even this room had some light from the torches hanging on the walls. Darkness could only mean death. We were all going to die.
"No dog, I didn't! We have no future!" I exploded.
I could see his golden eyes narrow in anger, the veins in his muscles showed as he flexed. A high pitched noise came from the metal chains that tried to restrain him. Cracks formed in the bricks.
"Cam, you need to calm down," Dmitri told him in a soothing voice.
"No," my tone was thoughtful,"I think we can use King Kong's anger to our advantage."
Dmitri's eyes widened once he saw the cracks forming on the wall. I smiled maliciously at the werewolf, I knew exactly how to anger him.
"You came here to protect Caddie, and yet you're locked up in a cell. She could be dead, or worse."
The truth of my words sliced through him. I didn't have to be Caddie to feel his pain; it hurt me to acknowledge the truth. I was supposed to be protecting her as well, but in this cell I was helpless. He started to morph, he began to shake uncontrollably as the cracks enlarged.
"Maybe you don't want to find her," I continued, "maybe you realized that she was meant for Aleksander so you don't care about her."
I bit my lip to hide the pain. Dmitri glanced at me from the corner of his eye, he didn't want me to push the dog to far. I couldn't stop though, a darker demon inside of me needed to say these things.
"Maybe you want her to be dead. Then, you wouldn't have to suffer every day knowing that you care about her but she'll never return those feelings."
A roar shook the room as Cameron transformed into a wolf. I should have been afraid of him but instead my attention was centered on the gaping hole in the wall.
"You did it!" Dmitri exclaimed.
The wolf turned his attention from me and saw the giant hole. He took a few steps toward it and froze. There was something on the other side. Suddenly a small girl with golden hair and bright blue eyes appeared and threw her arms around his giant head.
"Caddie!" Dmitri and I yelled together.
She released the wolf and ran over to us. Relief washed over me when I saw that she was unharmed. I had been so worried that one of the dark one's would have tortured her. I was starting to realize that Caddie wasn't as innocent as she once was, but that didn't stop me from worrying. Her eyes narrowed when she saw that we were still cuffed to the wall.
"I have to get you guys out," she whispered to herself.
"I'd love for that to happen, but for some reason our magic isn't working here," I informed her.
My brows furrowed as I saw a confident grin sprout on her face. What was going on in her pretty little head? I felt almost uncomfortable as she continued to stare at my metal cuffs
"Maybe your magic doesn't work down here, but mine does," her blue eyes brightened with hope.
"You can get us out?" Dmitri asked in disbelief.
Caddie bobbed her blonde head in agreement. She seemed positive that she could help us but there was something else behind her innocent looking eyes.
"But..." She started.
"But what?" I hissed, my anger began to rise.
A threatening growl erupted from the wolf. I could tell he wasn't pleased with my tone, but Caddie didn't care. She was too busy deciding something in her head. She refocused her attention to my shackles, the determined glint in her eyes told me that she had made her decision.
"I can help you guys out of the shackles, but it might hurt." She winced internally, thinking about harming us.
I was touched by how thoughtful she was, but I prided myself in being a free spirit. Being chained and imprisoned was not sitting well with me. In fact I was close to breaking free just like the dog did.
"I don't care what you have to do, you could burn my flesh off if you have to," I said impatiently.
When she continued to stall, my stomach dropped. That was exactly what she had to do, I realized. As a witch being burnt was an instinctual fear. Normally, I wasn't easily scared, but fire had always disturbed a deeper part of me. I didn't understand how fire elementals could live with theirselves. Even Caddie had no problem setting things on fire; I reluctantly remembered the time she melted a dark one's face off.
"Do it," I muttered weakly.
She nodded quickly and knelt by my side, her hands cuffed my shackles. I sucked in a deep breath and waited for the pain to come. Gradually, the heat increased and I felt the metal begin to melt into my skin. I bit my lip and held back a scream as the the white hot metal seared my flesh. Eventually I couldn't hold it back, a blood curdling scream tore free from my lips.
"I'm done," she finally said, after what seemed like hours of agony.
I opened my eyes and swallowed the burning vomit that worked its way up my throat. I was drenched in my own sweat and blood, if I had looked down I would have seen a ghastly and possibly lethal gashes around my wrists. I turned my head to look Dmitri but he wasn't there. He was standing next to the wolf, his chains had been severed from the wolf's canines.
"Dammit why didn't anyone tell me that, that was an option!" I yelled, my anger began to boil under my skin.
"I didn't consider it," Caddie said guiltily.
"Whatever," I grumbled and stood up.
It was impossible to ignore the agonizing pain that I was enduring but I knew we didn't have time for a temper tantrum. Caddie gave me one last weary look before she stood up and bounced over to the wolf's side. He purred with contentment as she buried her fingers into his dark brown fur. I held back an eye roll, we were still trapped but the dog couldn't see passed the fact that Caddie was alive.
"Okay I'm sorry to interrupt the happy reunion but how the hell are we going to get out of here?" I snapped impatiently.
Caddie jumped out of her haze, a determined expression crossed her face. Then her eyes widened and excitement overcame her features. She quickly turned to Dmitri and said something that shocked us all.
"I found Aleksander, he's in the next room. But I don't know how long he has left," Her excitement dwindled, and she ran back into the other room.
Dmitri, the dog and I ran behind her. A conflicted look danced upon Dmitri's face as he timidly bent towards his twin brother. I had to admit the resemblance was sort of freaky, if it wasn't for the blood caked on Aleksander's face and intense attraction I suddenly felt, I would have sworn he was Dmitri.
Caddie's eyes darted between the two brothers, a look of suspicion came across her face. Dmitri noticed her reaction to his hesitation so he swiftly grabbed Aleksander's arm and picked him up.
"Okay I don't want to be the Debby downer but... How do we get out?" I repeated my previous question.
Caddie rubbed the back of her neck uncomfortably.
"I don't know," she said in a weak voice, "I didn't even know how to get to you guys."
"There has to be a transportation spell," Dmitri mumbled.
I held back an eye roll, it wasn't that simple. Our magic still didn't work. The cells must have been cursed so know witch or warlock could escape. I refrained from telling Dmitri that, that was a stupid a idea. He shook his head and muttered something about, "this is impossible."
"Maybe I can get us out," Caddie said slowly. I could practically see the cogs turning in her head.
The corners of lips turned upwards into a cocky smirk. She raised her left hand and waved, my eyes didn't miss the sparks that flew from her fingertips.
"No offense Caddie but you're sort of new to this whole magic thing, do you even know a spell to get us out?" Dmitri asked.
"No," she allowed, "but dark magic doesn't work like that. It isn't centered around spells, but on your energy."
"Maybe if I focus my energy on getting us out, it'll actually work."
It sounded like a ludicrous idea. I sighed, maybe living here for the rest of my life won't be so bad.
We huddled together, each of us made sure we were touching Caddie in some way. She closed her eyes, and we did the same. Not because we had to focus but because we didn't want to watch her fail.
"Oh my god!" Caddie gasped as the cell room started to fade away.
We all opened our eyes and stared in shock as we stood in the middle of a tunnel. Oh. My. God. We're free!
"I'm going to be sick," Dmitri whined, as he struggled to support his unconscious brother's weight.
The dog yelped in joy, and rubbed his head against Caddie hand affectionately. I was about to cheer with them until I heard a hissing noise in the shadows. I glanced out of the corner of my eye and saw dozens was deranged eyes in the dark.
"Uh guys..." I started. I didn't need to finish because one of the dark ones launched themselves at Caddie. I quickly reached out and knocked them to the ground before Caddie could react.
"Run!" I shouted, no one hesitated to follow my order.
We sprinted through the tunnels, praying to see the exit hole. Unfortunately, we weren't that lucky. Every turn we made we seemed to lead us to more dark ones. They followed us in a pack, occasionally lunging at us from time to time. Was I never going to see the light again? I wondered until the hole came into view. We sprinted towards it but the dark ones began to advance on us.
"How the hell are we supposed to get out of here if they're right behind us!" Dmitri wheezed, lugging his brother behind him.
"Someone needs to stay back," Caddie mumbled, there was a dark and sad look on her face.
I could see that she was about to turn around and stop but Cam was already sprinting towards the dark ones. All the blood drained from my face as I watched his retreating figure. Caddie's eyes were glued to him, as he ripped a warlock to shreds. He continued to rip them apart, but more kept coming.
"Caddie we need to leave!" I yelled and pulled her away.
Her eyes never looked away as I continued to pull her along. Why was she doing this? My heart shattered as a agonized whimper escaped from Cameron and a shriek of pure horror escaped from Caddie. I looked back and saw the dead wolf lying on the ground in a pool of blood. Tears welled in my eyes as I l forced Caddie to leave.
"No! No! No no no please!" She cried out hysterically. She gripped her chest tightly as if her heart was literally breaking. Tears poured down her porcelain cheeks as she screamed his name in pain. I hauled her over my shoulder and pushed her out of the tunnel before I escaped as well. I noticed a few sadistic grins from the dark ones before I turned and sped away. My heart bled for the boy that lied dead in that tunnel, and for the girl who would never be the same.
