Chapter 13: Elemental Games

CADDIE's POV:

The memory of Martha was seared into my mind. Even if I had to do that trick a thousand more times, I knew the pain would never going away. No matter how vile or cruel a person had been during their lifetime, I  would never wish that kind of torture upon anyone. Not even the darkest souls who walked upon the earth were evil enough to face my wrath. For once in my life, I could actually see why people had called me a monster. And even though I became physically ill my only fear was, how will it be when I learn more about my powers? Will I reach a point like my aunt? A point when eventually it doesn't matter. A point when I look back on my lessons and realize what I did to Martha was only child's play.

My head was starting to pound as new fears arose. That was only my first lesson; the worst had definitely yet to come. Forcing a smile, I tried to carry on with my daily activities without raising any suspicions. I had faked a smile so many times before, so it that wasn't hard to do. I should be an actress, I thought dryly, my ability to pretend to be something I wasn't was astounding.

During breakfast I picked at my food; and tried to keep up with the conversations. It was hard to pay attention to Ryder's corny jokes when I kept seeing Martha's hollow eyes staring into my soul. Ryder and Mira had it so easy, all they had to do was punch a bag repeatedly and run for hours. The rest of us had to control emotions, minds, demonic powers and balance the universe. Just when I thought the universe couldn't be any meaner to me, Aleksander decided to kick me in the shin.

"Shit," I cursed giving him a dirty look.

My glare softened when I felt his concern for me. His face didn't give it away, since he was just as good as me at schooling his features. But after spending so much time with the heirs I had became more accustomed to their emotions. Don't ask me why though, I have no clue.

"What's wrong," he mouthed.

Mira looked over suspiciously, so I mocked him to mislead her. She glanced away and when he asked again I said nothing. There was no point in telling anyone, especially not the others. My powers were supposed to be a gift; I know many girls who would love to take my place. Aleksander wouldn't let it go, he continued to look over at me throughout the meal. I knew the second he got me alone he'd be bombarding me with questions. I pushed my fruit to the side, and joined in with the laughter on the other side of the table.

Alix's POV:

I watched Caddie with a curious eye. I knew exactly why she was pretending to be fine, but I was confused as to why she hadn't told anybody yet. She hadn't even told me, I only knew because of my gift. Normally I'm not so nosy. In fact I normally don't care, but I'm her protector and sooner or later I'll have to face the facts. The fact is that I do care. Little Caddie is shy, awkward and not always the smartest fish in the sea. However she intrigues me, and just like everyone else here I'm starting to realize she's capable of more than she looks like.

"Alix!" Someone yelled for my attention. I grimaced as I turned my attention to one of my brother's cronies.

"Are you going to the game tonight," the person asked. I vaguely remembered my brother rambling on about an elemental game tonight. It was like the witches version of football. Two out of the four elements would compete. Each team had to get their elemental token into the other end zone. An element token, is a large wooden disk with that elements symbol on it. Since it was called the 'elemental' games only students were powers specialized in the different elements could participate.

"Sure, I'll just have to ask Caddie." The girl's face fell once I said that. I thought  her name was Chelsea but I couldn't be positive. We had met the night of the Bon fire, but most of the night had turned into a hazy memory. I only remembered saving Caddie from the oaf. Even though I barely remembered the girl, she believed that we could enter a relationship in the future. And even though she was pretty, I couldn't put my job as Caddie's protector on hold. Lady Böse would kill me before I even entertained the thought.

"I'm sure Caddie would love to go," my brother said easing the tension. Not everyone loved the heirs. More than half of my brother's group thought the Council Heirs were a waste of money. If I hadn't gotten to know Caddie I probably would have despised her just like the others do.

Caddie made her way towards me and I couldn't help but smile. She had this cute little hop in her step, and a thoughtful look in her eye. I always wonder how she handled feeling everyone's emotions so well. I'm still expecting to comfort her during a meltdown. Reprimanding myself from thinking about Caddie's adorable ways I met her halfway.

"Ready to go to class?" I asked. Her face plainly stated that she wasn't but she nodded anyways.

Caddie's POV:

If they gave Oscars out regularly I'd be accepting one right now. After painfully surviving my classes I managed to make it to Heidi's office without hyperventilating. She was standing in the middle of the room, waiting for me.

"Are we going back to that room," I asked in a timid voice, my hands were shaking.

"No," she said, sympathy filled her eyes, "We're going to take a break today. I need to apologize for pushing you to far yesterday."

"Don't you think it's a day too late for that?" I asked my voice broke at the end. Her emotions were completely controlled. I couldn't pick out one specifically. So I had no idea if she was lying or not. Heidi needed and heir, I knew that, but did our relationship mean more to her than that?

"It might be. I can't apologize for having you do that because you need to learn those things, but I will apologize for the emotional trauma it caused you."

Her eyes pleaded with mine to understand. My defenses began to crumble. I had to imagine what life must be like for her, with no family and succumbed to darkness. I was the only person who could understand.

"It only gets harder doesn't it?" I asked averting my eyes. She sighed, "If it makes you feel any better, it's not going to get an easier for the other either."

That didn't help, our powers are on completely different fields. But if it stressful for them and they could carry out a normal day then I could too.

"Are you going to be ok?" Heidi asked placing a hand on my shoulder. I nodded, it was in the past it was time to become a shark and keep moving forward.

Heidi let me and Alix skip the rest of our classes. I slowly started to realize that over the past month Alix was getting special treatment. I didn't know how they knew me and Alix were so close, but that's the eerie thing about the council members. They know everything. As we walked around the school I noticed we weren't the only ones not in class.

"Is it normal for people to ditch classes at Nox Haven?" I asked. Except for math class I couldn't understand how anyone wouldn't find these classes interesting.

"No those students are getting ready for the Elemental Tournament," she told me with a smirk.

"Huh?" I asked, Alix had knowledge of everything could get slightly annoying.

"It's the Witches and Warlocks version of football," she explained, "Two teams compete. There are four teams, earth, wind, fire and water. Using their gifts they try to get their disk into the other end field."

"That sounds...dangerous," I concluded. Alix nodded eagerly, "Oh it is! It's one of the only things I'm fond about at this school."

"You know sometimes you scare me," I told her honestly. She gave me a secret smile and looped her arm through mine.

"That's why you love me."

Alix:

I slipped on the fire replica jersey painting flames on my face. As the day went on my excitement grew. I didn't realize how desperate I was for action. My old life was slipping through the cracks as I took on the role of Caddie's baby sitter. Her nice demeanor was infectious. I stepped out of the bathroom and froze.

"Caddie! You can't wear blue, that's the color of the water team. We're team fire," I complained. She gave me one of those 'are you serious looks.'

I threw one of my red shirts at her. "I'm not wearing this, my boobs will get frostbite!"

"It's September, not December. You're over reacting." She gave me a stubborn look so naturally I found a simple solution to the problem. After wrestling the blue sweatshirt off of her I managed to get her in the shirt.

"I feel naked," Caddie whined. I rolled my eyes, she was far from naked. At least everyone can clearly see she's a girl. We left the dorm and I managed to pull the hair tie out of her hair. She gasped and I ran.

"Alix!" She yelled. We followed the other students and advisors onto a trail that cut through the trees and lead to a field. Caddie stopped trying to grab the hair tie from me once she saw the massive stadium. Giant bleachers, flashy lights, and the playing platform, distracted Caddie. I could tell she was overwhelmed. We climbed the bleachers trying to get the best seats. Caddie could see every detail of the raised platform from our seats.

It was marked the same way a football field was but instead of grass the field was stainless steal. The players were already preparing for the game. They didn't need to stretch, instead they did magic exercises. Both the fire and water elementals were working on new techniques.

"Isn't it cool?" I asked Caddie who was still staring with an open mouth and starry eyes.

"Now I understand why you were so excited to come," she agreed. I smiled, the game hadn't even begun.

"Why don't we get some food before more students come," I told her and led her down the metal steps. My mouth began to water at the ambrosia of the food.

Caddie pulled on my arm stopping me in the middle of my rampage. She was looking over at a group of werewolves. One she focused on more than the others. She noticed her gaze and slipped her a secret smile. She looked away quickly.

"Is Cam in a gang?" She asked me once we began to walk towards the concession stand. I faintly remembered him from the bonfire.

I shook my head, "I don't advise getting involved with a werewolf. They have nasty tempers."

Caddie's face morphed into a tomato, "I'm not going to get involved with him. I just asked you a question."

"I'm just saying, you have horrible taste in men."

"I saw you ogling over Aleksander too, so don't try that." I waved my finger in her face, " I was attracted him, I never liked him. You can't blame me every girl with eyes would say that he's fine." I let out a low whistle and laughed as a few guys turner to check me out. Sleazeballs.

"Just be careful with a werewolf. They're the definition of bipolar."

"I room with you, I think I can handle it," she muttered. I stuck my tongue out at her and got my funnel cake.

The game had already started once we got back. An offensive fire player was burning his way through the field, the water players desperately tried to defend there end zone but in the the fire team had scored.

"Woohoo!!" I screamed in excitement, accidentally sending the food soaring. It landed on a burly looking guy. He turned around, visibly angry looking for the culprit. I turned away quickly twirling a piece of my hair. Oops. He grabbed a boy much smaller than him and began to bark at him. Oh how I love sporting events.

The werewolf plopped himself down beside Caddie. I couldn't stop myself from inspecting him. He might have been cute, if he didn't try to hide it so much. It dawned on me that Caddie might like him because he reminds her of herself.

Caddie:

I smiled when I saw Cam approach. "Look who's out of her tower," he said ruffling my blonde hair.

"Yeah," I said curtly trying to fix my hair, "give all the credit to my roommate Alix."

Cam quickly glanced at Alix. "You're Jaxon Slade's sister right," he said in a taut voice.

"Unfortunately," Alix said with affection. Despite the way she might talk about him, I knew that Alix loved her brother. Cam looked confused but didn't ask for more information.

"So I saw you with your gang earlier..." I started. Cam snorted and cut me off, "I'm not in a gang Caddie. That's my pack."

I gave him a doubtful look, "Every time you say pack I hear gang." He laughed again and relaxed into the seat beside me.

"So werewolves like the Elemental games?"

"Sure we like sports," he said that as if I was dumb to imply otherwise.

"What sports do you guys like to play. Chasing squirrels?" I asked jokingly. He gave me a sarcastic look, "Of course not that would be ridiculous. I'm more of a chipmunk kind of person."

Even Alix laughed at that. The game was violent, and would give me nightmares. But I knew that wouldn't be the subject that kept me up all night. I gave Cam once last glance before focusing my attention on the game.
