Chapter 03

Fon wakes up the next morning sweating all over. It is a hot, sunny day, and another task is at hand. The candidates for the Great Search will be checked for their strongest affinity to magick and according to Rissa, the third task will utilize this knowledge.

Fon changes into her Academy robe and looks at the mirror. Her robe is disheveled. Her straight, cropped jet-black hair is sticking everywhere. Her light brown complexion looks paler than usual. Her black eyes had the look of boredom and worse, she feels sick and feverish.

Despite not feeling well, she still finds her way to the examination area. She enters the room and finds out that other apprentices and students are already waiting for the results of the candidates they are supporting. She makes her way towards the front and apprentices automatically create a path for her. Whenever she gazes at an apprentice, they cower and transfer their gaze somewhere else.

The other Great Search candidates are in front of a room, waiting for their turn. So, she sits beside Prim and closes her eyes. She plans to take a rest before her affinity will be checked.

"You are scaring the other apprentice as usual," Prim comments.

Fon smirks. "That is their problem, not mine. They cower at the strength of my aura."

"You should learn to keep it at a minimum," Prim suggests.

"This is the minimum I can manage.. comfortably. Lowering and hiding this will take effort. Let them be scared. I have no care," Fon responds and places her arms behind her head.

Prim leans closer to her and whispers, "When you are out of this Academy, it would be dangerous for you and the people around you. Philomena never taught you that?"

Fon studies Prim intently. She has actually the guts to say it to her face. Even more so, it annoys her when anyone criticizes Philomena. She knows about the danger it poses outside but she also knows that she is stronger than any dark witch alive. Philomena always scolded her about not properly hiding her magick but she never listened. It is a bother to continuously check for any aura seeping out of her body.

"Let them come and seek me. One less dark witch in this world then."

"Just as the rumors say, you really are confident in your magick. Philomena does not need to worry of any dark witches coming at you then," she comments.

Then Cesky is called inside the room. After a few minutes, she comes out, and the examiner lists her affinity.

Alexander takes the list and announces, "Cesky Trelewn has the strongest affinity to Enchantment."

Apprentices clap. Ayin is next. Fon notices Rissa in the sea of faces and catches her eyes following Ayin as he enters the room. Moments later Ayin's affinity is announced.

"Ayin Repulse's strongest affinity is on Restoration," booms Alexander.

Apprentices clap again.

"Strangely, he has such an affinity to Restoration," Prim comments again. Fon never imagined that Prim is as talkative as this. She always thought that Prim hated conversing.

"His only affinity to magick," Fon corrects as she watches Sven enter the examination room.

"You hate him, don't you? I heard about what you did on the previous test," Prim says but Fon never answered. "It's alright, I don't dislike you. Holding that scepter will also be as hard for me. I might say you relieved me of unnecessary pain just to gauge my innate magick. Besides, we all know who would win that part," Prim explains.

Fon shifts her attention to Prim. Prim should be annoyed because she is the reason why Prim's ranking is at the bottom when the Search is just starting.

"If I might ask, why did you join the Search?" she asks and waits for an answer, to sate her growing curiosity.

Prim never gives her one. So she continues, "You already have the power and money that a Great Witch position can offer. Also, the Jaxon clan is famous enough for you to ask for more."

"Sven Kleinfeld has the strongest affinity to Sealing Circle," Alexander announces.

A sealing circle is the ability to write symbols to seal or unseal an object. An old art passed down by only the ancient powerful clans. It is the specialty of Kleinfeld's clan. And it only proves that the little girl has something more than Flight. She really thought that Sven's strongest affinity would be Flight since she's only behind Ayin for mere minutes despite her young age.

"Proving myself." Prim finally answers as she stands up and smiles at her.

Moments later Alexander announces that Prim's strongest affinity is on Transportation, the ability to transfer any object from one place to another. Fon follows Prim and enters the room.

Upon entering, the examiner gestures for her to stand inside a magick meter. It has an oval shape that resembles that of a tube. It is one meter in width and two meters in height. It has transparent glass and light can be seen flickering inside.

She enters the oval gauge and it scans her from head to toe. When she finishes, the examiner gives the list to her to be given to Alexander. She even notes the raising of the examiner's brow as he looks at her from head to toe again.

Ignoring the blatant curiosity, she goes outside and hands Alexander her results.

"Well, what to do with you? Your affinity to all the magicks is off the charts except Divinity and Energy Molding," Alexander passes the list to the other four judges.

The judges are giving her curious glances except for Philomena who already has an idea of how strong her magick is. They are discussing among themselves when Fon interrupts. "Might I give a suggestion?"

Jayden ushers her to go on.

"I can choose to use my weakest for the third task, that is, Divination but it would be too boring to use during tests, and besides I am not fond of it. So if you would all agree, allow me to use Energy Molding for the third task as my strongest affinity."

Just as the last word leaves her mouth, she notices how the judges all raise their eyebrows in sync. She smiles and catches Myrielle looking at her. She also catches sight of Finn Zachary in the corner having an excited look on his face.

Fon meant what she said. Divination, and predicting future occurrences, will require her to talk to the audience and it is totally out of the question. At least, Energy Molding, which is the ability to use an external resource as one's own magick, will be more exciting.

"Where did you find out that we will use this examination for the third task?" Alexander interjects.

"It already spreads around the Academy. Someone might be leaking the kind of tests for the Great Search on your side," she answers.

"Why don't we let her?" Myrielle suggests. "I think a little handicap like that would give a little more fun to the tasks."

"I never thought that you are one to look for fun in these kinds of events," Jayden comments.

"I am not usually, but don't you think it would be interesting? We already know the difference between her magick and the other candidates. Giving her a little handicap can also be part of the test for the other candidates," Myrielle answers.

"I agree to it," Philomena concurs, and the other judges agree with her. Jayden finally announces that she can use Energy Molding despite his disagreement.

"That's it for the examination. Now, let's head on to the Academy grounds for the second task," Alexander says.

When Fon climbs down the stage, Rissa is already waiting for her. She looks worried.

"What is it?" Fon asks.

"You are sick," Rissa states and places her hands on Fon's forehead.

"I am not," she denies and yet happy at the same time. Rissa never misses a thing if it's about her.

"Yes, you are."

"Even if I am, there is no need to worry. I can still win this test as easily as the first task," she confidently says and proceeds to the Academy grounds for the second task.
