Chapter 33

It seemed to happen in slow motion but yet it happened so fast. He went limp in my arms. I lowered him to the ground gently. All I could hear was my own heartbeat in my ears.

"Dad, please no!" I screamed soaking his lifeless body with my tears. I could see my everyone running toward us. They seemed to be screaming but I couldn't hear them.

I glared at my mother. This was the woman I had wasted my life daydreamingabout. I had clung to her stupid amulet in hopes of finding her. Now I wished I had never found her. She was still holding my fathers heart in her hands like a trophy.

The ground began to shake underneath me. My power was now uncontrollable, fueled by my rage.

I raised my hands and let the power flow from the ground and through me. She dropped his heart preparing to defend herself. Her eyes widened in surprise as she realized she couldnt move.

The power nature was channeling through me was turning her to stone. I watched in wonder as her feet turned grey then it spread. She now stood before me as nothing but a stone statue.

I turned back to my father's lifeless body. Dimitri, Ian, and Amelia were sobbing over him. Amelia stood and walked up to what was left of my mother.

"She is gone but nature used this to trap the darkness inside." She murmured through her tears.

All I felt after that was numb. My mother had killed my father then I killed her. Talk about a screwed up family.

Everyone walked back to the school in silence. Dimitri carried my father with care. Apparently one good thing had happened since the school stood in one piece. Evelyn must had found a way to reverse the spell.

"What do you want to do with him?" Amelia asked me quietly.

I gazed out at the lake with a bittersweet smile. The lake was Ian's sanctuary and the place where my dad had escorted me to the witch ceremony.

"Will you bury him by the lake?" I asked reaching up to clutch my initial necklace. I'd never expected my dad/daughter day to end in his death.

Merrick, Olivia, and Evelyn looked horrified when they saw their headmasters body. Dimitri carried him toward the lake in silence. Ian wrapped me in his arms and we cried together.

"I don't think this is what winning feels like," Evelyn cried aloud as she wept. Dead students lay all over the campus. There wasn't but a handful of survivors. Thankfully Chloe had left before this happened.

"No one won today...we just survived." I agreed.

Once Dimitri had buried my father, I sat down beside his grave. I didn't want to leave him like this. I cried until I had no more tears left.

When I finally walked back to the school, all the bodies were gone. Ian, Merrick, and Dimitri had burned them all.

"There are only eight students who survived. Four fairies, three werewolves, and one witch." Amelia sobbed.

"I guess all those parents were right to pull their kids from school the first time," Evelyn sighed.

I didn't feel like talking to anyone as I I made my way to my dorm. It felt like a knife stabbing me in the gut as I passed my father's office. I flung myself onto my bed and buried myself in the covers.

That night I was still in the same position when I heard a knock on my door. I couldn't even bring myself to answer. Dimitri appeared in front of me.

"I cleaned out your father's things in the office and I found this." He held out an envelope with my name on it.

"Just lay it on the nightstand." I whispered.

"I'm really sorry, Josie. I'd rather it had been me." He admitted before leaving the room. I forced myself to go back to sleep. It was the only way to escape the pain.

The next morning I awoke to the sunlight pouring through the windows. I grabbed the envelope Dimitri had left and the amulet from my nightstand. I wanted to go be with my dad.

Someone had made a pretty cross and marked his grave with it. The sun fluttered off the lake. It was a beautiful day.

"I miss you already, dad" I sobbed as I sat Indian style beside his grave. I slowly tore open the envelope. Inside was a letter.

Josie,
If you're reading this then I was right about who Anna would choose to kill. She was angrier with me than she was anyone. She never forgave me for taking you away when you was born. There is one thing I want you to know... you walking into my office that day was the best thing that has ever happened to me.

You are everything I could have ever hoped you would be. No matter how this happened I want you to know it's not your fault. I can just see you now sitting by my grave wishing you had stayed in the human world in hopes of saving me. Even if that would have saved my life it wouldn't be worth it.

Meeting you is what makes it all worth it, Josie. I love you more than I have ever loved anyone. I'm so proud to be your dad. If this is indeed my farewell letter then I have a few requests, sweetheart.

#1 Keep Ian in line. He needs someone riding his back to keep him going in the direction he should.

#2 Appoint Dimitri as headmaster. I trust him more than anyone. He's committed to protecting this school at all costs.

#3 Tell Evelyn it is nothing personal once she gets angry about Dimitri being chosen instead of her.

#4 Tell Merrick to propose to Olivia already. Its been long overdue.

#5 Tell Amelia I always loved her. I was too much of a coward to tell her that.

#6 This is the most important one.. always remember who you are. You're not the Dark Witch's daughter..you're the daughter of Silus Salvatore, former headmaster of Bennett.
I love you.

The letter was drenched with my tears by the time I finished reading. I looked down at the amulet in my other hand. I slung it into the lake as hard as I could and watched it sink.

"I'm not the Dark Witch's daughter. I am the daughter of Silus Salvatore." I laughed and sobbed.
