Chapter 3

"The dark witch? I dont believe I know who that is, Sir." I stammered, snatching the amulet up and shoving it in my shorts pocket. He turned his back to me and rummaged through a box of books. He slammed a large, dusty book onto the counter and slid it toward me.

"This book has everything you need to know about her. You're welcome to take it with you. I would seriously get rid of that amulet though, Miss. It's the darkest possession one could own." He shuddered as he said it.

I tucked the book under my arm. He began sorting through a box of various artifacts letting me know he was done talking. I walked back to the car still in disbelief. I hadn't expected such a negative reaction about the necklace. It weighed heavy in my pocket now.

I climbed into my car and studied the worn book. The Dark Witch was scrawled across the cover. I began to read chapter after chapter, hungry for answers. He hadn't been exaggerating about it belonging to an evil being.

The dark witch had been the most evil supernatural to walk the earth. As I read about her evil doings I felt sick to my stomach. She had been a heartless woman.

She had started witch hunts herself. She'd turned in all the good witches in the land. She had used her beauty to charm men and kill them. Most witches used natural magic, harvesting their power from the earth and all of its elements.

The Dark witch had craved more. She sold her own soul to the devil in return for dark, unnatural power. She had tormented both humans and supernaturals.

I shut the book in shock. Although this was just a drop in the bucket of the answers I was searching for, it was a surprise. Could the dark witch be my mother? If so, why hadn't I showed signs of powers?

The book mentioned the supernatural town called Bennett had been the last place she was spotted before she disappeared. That was probably going to be my best bet on getting answers. I laid the book and amulet in the passengers seat.

Bennett was only three hours from here. I followed the GPS nervously. What if I didn't live through the cross over? I could just turn around and go back to the orphanage. I shook my head at that thought. I'd been waiting for this day my whole life. There was no turning back.

No one had ever crossed over into their territory and lived to tell the tale. I had no idea what I was getting myself into. Werewolves, witches, vampires, fairies, and zombies were barely taught to humans.

I could remember the watered down version in my history lessons. Basically, the supernaturals and humans had raged war with one another since the dawn of time. They had even almost made humans become extinct at one point.

Everyone finally made a treaty in the early 1800s, dividing the land from each country in half. It had always been rumored that they could come into human territory and feed on whom they pleased.

I hit my brakes when I saw the large no trespassing sign. It flashed with bright red caution lights so it couldn't be missed. The warning sign was eerie enough to make me change my mind. I noticed the amulet beside me beginning to illuminate a brighter blue.

It hadn't ever done that before. Being this close to the border must have caused it. I took it as a sign that I should continue what I started. I wasn't sure if they even used cars over there so I decided to ditch mine. At least if I didnt make it they would discover my car and figure out what happened to me.

I grabbed my two suitcases and the big book Edgar had given me. I glanced behind me one more time at the human world I'd always known. I hoped I could keep my promise to Lizze and come back. This was too important not to risk though.

If I was affiliated with the dark witch, it would be something I needed to know for sure. I took one last deep breath as I faced the warning sign once more. I gripped the amulet tightly and squeezed my eyes shut.

I slowly counted down from three in my head several times. Every time I made it to one my legs refused to move forward. The amulet began to burn in my hand like a hot coal fresh from a fireplace. Whatever was inside it seemed to be urging me forward.

Its what's inside that matters, I recalled the woman in my dream saying. I took one more deep breath. Three.....two.....one....I forced my legs to cooperate. I stepped on through the magical barrier before I could hesitate anymore.
